Moving into summer, Walters and Nez continue to educate young readers about what happens in the summertime--specifically the fun! Picnics and beach days are colorfully illustrated to express the joys of summer. It's sad that summer is ending right now, and students return to school in a few weeks where I live, but if you have the summer blues, just turn to this little book to give you a pick-me-up!

I added Sweet Summer to my favorites tab because I feel like it would be a great book to have in my classroom library. It is important for teachers to collect books that differentiate the various times/seasons of the year. The plot is all based on activities children and adults can do in the summer. The main characters in this story are a boy and his father and the fun illustrations show them doing lots of exciting summer activities like building sandcastles, eating popsicles, and enjoying the 4th of July.

Reading teachers could conduct a read aloud with this book in preparation for summer or when students get back from summer break. Teachers could use this book as a comprehension strategy through activating students' background knowledge about what they did last summer. The teacher could also ask students to write what they did over the summer after conducting read aloud. I would suggest this book for independent readers through the primary grades (specifically in early/late 1st grade or early 2nd grade).

It includes many beautiful illustrations. The book talks about the things that you can do in the summer. There are quite a few onomatopoeias and has an opportunity for children to make an inference.
