Ross Deere is a virile potent young man. Good by heart, sweet and did I say he is virile and did I say potent?
My god I was exhausted just by reading. But the fun is... It is not only hot as hell but also a very nice story. Sometimes funny but always positive and sweet. He is a Handy man
He gets his intro in gay sex with his first client. And that is the beginning of his Handy man/escort career.
Ross is what he is.....Handy and much more
He is very easy going, thoughtful, attentive, sweet and fast... building Ikea stuff in one day.
I laught so loud Ikea - Handyman uhuhh
He has always eyes for the well-being of his partners, no selfish attitude, professional.
He is one wonderful soul sweet very sweet but in the beginning stupid with his unprotected sex His encounters with clients were written in a very pleasant way, very entertaining.
Ross is so adorable you can only love him. I was so pleased with his HEA.
No angst, heavenly light and very steamy.
I was so exhausted after this read i smoked metaphorically two sigarettes and slept like a baby very very content.

Normally, when I am doing a review, I try to ignore what authors say about their work. I like to consider each book as an independent artifact and draw my own conclusions, without being unduly influenced by the authors’ own opinions. In the case of Hans M. Hirschi’s erotic gay novella Ross Deere – Handyman, I’m having some trouble with this policy, since this review is the direct consequence of a post on his blog.

The title of that post was “Sex sells writing, they say, but when is enough enough?”. In his essay, the author expressed some discomfort the amount of explicit sexual content he was encountering lately in fiction, and in the marketing of fiction. At the same time, he gave an almost embarrassed plug for his own new book, in which he’d ventured into erotica for the first time. “Sex, Sex and More Sex!”, exclaims his light-hearted trailer for Ross Deere – Handyman. When I expressed some curiosity, he generously sent me a copy.

I have to agree with Mr. Hirschi’s evaluation of the book. “Sex, Sex and More Sex” is a fine description. Ross, the title character, is an easy-going, attractive young man who more or less accidentally finds himself in the business of providing sexual services for pay, mostly to men. In addition to his carnal skills (which are considerable), Ross can also offer expertise in fixing broken faucets, assembling furniture, re-shingling roofs, and so on. Thus he’s “handy” both literally and figuratively.

The book is framed as a sort of confessional memoir, as Ross looks back at a decade working as a handyman/escort. He introduces the reader to his favorite clients, gradually sharing his history of erotic escapades. As the book proceeds, Ross reveals that he’s also involved in a serious relationship, that he thinks he’s falling in love, and that as a result he’s eager to get out of his current business, lucrative as it is.

Mr. Hirschi writes well. He captures Ross’s sexual adventures with skill and grace, successfully conveying the variations in personal dynamics and sexual preference that distinguish each of the clients Ross discusses. I found Ross charming and could well understand why he’s so popular. However, for the most part, I didn’t find any of the delightfully detailed sex scenes particularly erotic.

This is not due to my gender or sexual orientation. Like Ross, I consider myself a “try-sexual”. I often find gay erotica intensely arousing. The sex scenes in Ross Deere – Handyman, explicit as they are, did not succeed in getting my motor running (as they say), even though that was clearly the author’s intent.

I shouldn’t be analyzing, perhaps, but I believe that the key to this reaction lies in Mr. Hirschi’s own conflicted feelings about writing erotica. I get the sense that he believes sex and love are two quite different things, and that the former carries far less emotional weight than the latter. Indeed, this dichotomy is clear in Ross’s determination not to jump into bed with his lover John, though in other circumstances he’d be rimming a stranger within ten minutes of meeting him.

Ross Deere’s encounters with his clients feel shallow, all sensation and no feeling. I’ll admit that casual sex sometimes turns out that way, but not always. Even without love (or at least the sort of happily-ever-after, committed emotion that wears that name in popular fiction), sex can be a powerful, intense, moving experience. The recognition of this truth lies at the heart of the (admittedly fraught) distinction between erotica and porn.

I don’t mean to suggest I didn’t enjoy this book. I found it entertaining, and educational, too, in terms of giving me a more nuanced understanding of the nuts and bolts of gay sex. However, I wouldn’t label it as erotica. My definition of erotica is fiction that explores the experience of desire. Ross Deere – Handyman contains tons of sex, but very little desire.

Re-reading this review, I realize that it says as much about my own prejudices and predelictions as it does about the author’s. So be it. I guess there’s no such thing as an objective review.

If you want sex, sex and more sex, with an engaging, surprisingly realistic hero with whom anyone would fall in love, Ross Deere may be just right.

If you are looking for a steamy read with filled with sex conquests and spit lubed smut, this is your book. The book is written in first person in a diary “tell me a story” kind of way. Ross Deere is a handy man but he packs a tool kit with more than just a screwdriver, hammer and wrench. Ross tells about all the men he has serviced in the last 10 years in between his dates with John (not a client, his man of interest is actually named John). There is a lot of sex in a variety of positions. It’s not until the end of the book that we get to meet John and see how the rest of Ross’s life unfolds.

The only real complaint I have about the book is that Ross Deere is from North Dakota and moved to California, the author uses some terminology that is not commonly used in the United States (ie. dungarees instead of pants)

3.5 Heart Review by Kat

I have been waiting to try a Hans Hirschi book since I had an opportunity to met him at Rainbow Con this last summer. This was a fun little book. You can’t help but like Ross. He is this sweet, great looking guy who is kind to everyone and can find the positive to all situations and people he meets. My only problem with him is when he seems to lose good judgment over safe sex. Condoms, can I repeat, condoms are a given essential in the escort business! I cringed several times in a couple of situations where good judgment just fell by the wayside! Ross must have been watched over by a personal guardian angel because he was a very fortunate and lucky man in this business. This story takes place over a ten-year period, done in reminiscing style, as Ross has finally “met” someone, John, and is starting to date him. And John is a really good guy. Ross is finally at a place in his life where he is ready for the next step…a real relationship. The vignettes of the people who helped shape his life and their impact on him were funny and sweet. I enjoyed getting to see the kind side of Ross through these vignettes. He had a caring heart for the people he met and got to know.

Is this great literature, no, but it is a sweet and fun book. Did it bother me that there were several unsafe sex practices scenes, most definitely! I admit that I had to walk away from the book a couple of times because these really bothered and scared me. Unsafe sex is just not okay in my book. Taking unnecessary risks to your life is not cool! Did Ross deserve a HEA? Most deservedly so. He is kind, and sweet, and caring to all people and totally deserves someone that will be there for him! And I so love John! He is one of the “good guys”! A fun little book that I am glad I got a chance to read.

“Dustin was clearly a different guy after our time together. He was smiling and extroverted, and his body language was open and inviting. He laughed a lot, and his humor was quite infectious.”

4 handy stars!! Sexy and so much fun!

This book was so much fun. Ross is a collection of his memories when he was a male escort. He looks back at his time with so many fun and exciting me and each story is just as hot as the last one. I was sucked in and I couldn’t put this book down until the end!! So much fun!

This was a curious set of tales. Told from Ross’ perspective, the book contains a series of vignettes from the past ten years of his time as a handyman/escort. These stories are interwoven through his current dating scenario with a man he’s sincerely interested in pursuing a relationship with and from which he would like to obtain his happily ever after. Each vignette is a full tale from meeting through farewells (and some with whom he is currently maintaining a relationship.

I had a hard time getting invested in this set of stories. Perhaps it was because of the way each vignette was presented, but overall it simply wasn’t my cup of tea. I am therefore rating this at 3.5 stars.

The story is well-written, the plot is clear, and there is definite chemistry on the part of the main character for each of his clients. I did enjoy the unique outlook the author presented of his main character in that Ross genuinely appreciates each and every one of his clients, always looking for the positive in each situation in which he finds himself. If you’re looking for a tale of tales, this is your book.

Four stars!
This story was a bit different than most things I’ve read. Loved how Ross is telling the story. He narrates and you can hear his voice as you read. Plus the way he breaks the fourth wall and actually talks to the reader is just so fun. It was fascinating reading about the different people he met in his career as a handyman cum escort (see what I did there? LOL!). I was a little uncomfortable when Ross talked about painful penetration. Especially right towards the beginning. However it wasn’t overly described, plus it is a fact of life it hurts sometimes, so I was able to keep reading.
I loved how Ross enjoyed his job to the fullest but knew when to walk away. John was a sweetie and you could tell how deeply he felt for Ross even if we never get to see in his head. Some of the “clients” are guys I want to read more about. They are wonderfully well written for not being the focus of the story. Except for Ethan. He doesn’t deserve redemptions (and those that know me and my reading habits know this is HUGE for me to say!). I desperately want to read Jason’s story. I think of all the clients I want his story the most.
Seeing as this was my first book by Mr. Hirschi (I know! All of his fans just collectively gasped) I wasn’t sure what to expect going in. However I had high hopes considering how popular his books are. Definitely enjoyed it and will be reading more of his work in the future.

Hans did a brilliant job in writing this great story. He wrote it in 1st person as he tells the story, chapter by chapter, bringing in the next client, tying it into his current man he was dating and falling in love with. The story line follows well with the characters. The characters were believable and I loved the MC Ross Deere from the get go. He was charming, sexy as hell, HOT, and lived the past 10 years as a handyman/escort who had a big clientele. Word got around of who he was and his services were offered as a handyman for anything, then especially men turned into a Sexy encounter. Ross loved Sex and he had no problem giving himself and enjoying every minute. As the story continues as he updates his relationship with John and his world changes. He's fallen in love and he can't go back. This is a beautiful story of a man who had everything, sex, a job he loved, everything, but he didn't have love until John. If you love MM Sex, love, romance, you need to read this one. I loved it. Hans gave me this ARC to review in exchange for a honest review and I must give him 5 stars for such a wonderful story...Don't miss it..

His book was sweet dirty fun. Ross is a escort and likes his fun but when the one for him comes along he recognizes it for what it is and takes the leap. This was a fun quick read which I really enjoyed.
