Top Shelf Murder Mystery—Riveting. Being a Murder-Mystery “JUNKIE” this book is definitely a keeper … can’t put it down … read it again type of book … and it is very precise to the lifestyles in Upper Michigan. Very well researched. I am a resident of this area. His attention to detail is great. I have to rate this book in the same class or better than authors Michael Connelly, James Patterson, and Steve Hamilton. — ShelldrakeshoresBeing a Michigan native, I was immediately drawn to this book. Michael Carrier is right in step with his contemporaries James Patterson and David Baldacci. I am anxious to read more of his work. I highly recommend this one! — J. HenningsenA fast and interesting read. Michael ends each chapter with a hook that makes you want to keep reading. The relationship between father and daughter is compelling. Good book for those who like a quick moving detective story where the characters often break the “rules” for the greater good! I’m looking forward to reading the author’s next book. — Flower LadyMove over, Patterson, I now have a new favorite author, Jack and his daughter make a great tag team, great intrigue, and diversions. I have a cabin on Sugar Island and enjoyed the references to the locations. I met the author at Joey’s (the real live Joey) coffee shop up on the hill, great writer, good stuff. I don’t usually finish a book in the course of a week, but read this one in two sittings so it definitely had my attention. I am looking forward to the next installment. Bravo. — Northland PressMy husband is not a reader—he probably hasn’t read a book since his last elementary school book report was due. But … he took my copy of Murder on Sugar Island to deer camp and read the whole thing in two days. After he recommended the book to me, I read it—being the book snob that I am, I thought I had the whole plot figured out within the first few pages, but a few chapters later, I was mystified once again. After that surprise ending, we ordered the other two Getting to Know Jack books. — Erin W.I enjoyed this book very much. It was very entertaining, and the story unfolded in a believable manner. Jack Handler is a likable character. But you would not like to be on his wrong side. Handler made that very clear in Jack and the New York Death Mask. This book (Murder on Sugar Island) was the first book in the Getting to Know Jack series that I read. After I read Death Mask, I discovered just how tough Jack Handler really was.I heard that Carrier is about to come out with another Jack Handler book—a sequel to Superior Peril. I will read it the day it becomes available. And I will undoubtedly finish it before I go to bed. If he could write them faster, I would be happy. — DebLeft on the edge of my seat after the last book, I could not wait for the next chapter to unfold and Michael Carrier did not disappoint! I truly feel I know his characters better with each novel and I especially like the can-do/will-do attitude of Jack. Keep up the fine work, Michael, and may your pen never run dry! — SW

Michael has at different times in his life driven truck throughout the US, hustled pool from Texas to Montana, traveled the country hitchhiking, spent five years in Greenwich Village's East Side, delivered diamonds in New York's diamond district (disguised as a down-and-outer), tended bar at a New York nightclub, climbed dozens of water towers throughout the US, panned gold, skydived, and worked for over two decades in private security.

One of Mike's favorite hobbies is creating intricate puzzles. Since 1992 he has assumed the persona of "Mountain Mike." As this character, he hides a treasure (which is a ten dollar bill) somewhere around Grand Rapids, Michigan. He then every week publishes puzzles which contain clues as to the location of the treasure.
When a lucky sleuth finds the treasure, Mountain Mike buys it from him for $1000. So far, since 1992, Mike has rewarded seven such treasure hunters.
Currently Michael lives with his wife in a house on Lake Superior. His mailing address is Paradise, MI.

This book was interesting. The style of writing was a mix between for kids and young adults there was a lot of good description and the plot itself was more directed at teens but the writing was like a little kid story it was honestly terrible.

Just ok. Took me forever to get into. None of the characters really jumped out at me and there's just random snippets of architecture history or water treatment "fun facts" thrown in there that fall short of ever really connecting to what's happening at their moment. I also didn't realize this was a series when I picked it up though so I might have missed something in the earlier accounts.

Also, and again random, but I'm so bothered as to the fact that the cover has ZERO correlation to the story whatsoever! Young boy dressed like he's from the 1920s walking down a railroad track carrying IT quality red balloons ... ??? Ok, rant over.

Excellent book. It had special meaning to me because my dad and his siblings were raised on Cherry Street.

KILLER THRILLER!
GHOST OF CHERRY STREET is the first book in Michael Carriers Jack’s Justice series and the third book I’ve enjoyed from this author. As the story begins, retired Chicago detective Jack Handler and family are getting ready to embark on spring vacation on the island with the boys and three friends. Before the fun begins, Jack assigns the kids a research project at the local library involving a case he’s following. By the time the kids discover too many facts for their own good, it’s way too late for fun. The Handler gang is off on a search for more than anyone bargains for when one of the kids is abducted. With Jack on the trail, there’s no telling what can happen. Will an inept officer of the law and a clever perp stand in Jack’s way? Carrier manages to keep the reader engaged from beginning to end in this fast-paced killer thriller. —Bette A. Stevens
