Summary (from Goodreads):

After a youthful infatuation went terribly wrong, Lady Samantha Lennox gave up all thought of suitors and happily-ever-after. But when she angers her strict and demanding father, the Earl of Stratford, he retaliates by arranging a marriage for her to a man she could never admire, much less love. What I Liked:

Note: I received this book for free from the author. I was not compensated for my review, nor did the source of the copy affect my opinion of this book at all.

Ah, this series is a favorite of mine. I adored the previous books and novella, and I just recently read and enjoyed the fourth full-length novel, Six Degrees of Scandal. Each pair's story is so unique and lovely, and I especially love just how connected and interwoven the plots of each book are, even though this series is a companion series. If you're a historical romance fan, I highly recommend this Scandalous series!

In this novella, we have Lady Samantha's story. Years ago, Samantha stole money from her father to help her neighbor and friend, Sebastian (read his story in It Takes a Scandal). Years later, Samantha confesses to her father so that Sebastian's name will be cleared. At first, her father does not seem angry (which is out of character); but then he decides that Samantha will marry a brute of a man, in a month's time. Samantha runs away, only to become lost and almost kidnapped in London. If not for a dashing artist painting nearby, Samantha might have disappeared forever. Lord George Churchill-Gray, son of the Duke of Rowland, is more concerned with his artwork than his title. When he saves Samantha from kidnappers, he offers her his place temporarily. But weeks pass and the pair can't deny their attraction. Will Samantha leave her life in Richmond behind?

This story was short, which is to be expected - it's a novella. I love how Linden is able to fit in a beautiful and very developed story in such a short space. We get all of the wonderful aspects of a historical romance novel,, but in a compact form. In this novella, time moves slowly at first. Only a few days pass between Samantha telling her father that she stole money from him years ago, and her fleeing to London when her father tells her about her new marriage. But when Gray saves her and takes her in, time starts to move faster. Weeks pass. So there is no case of an undeveloped relationship, though it might seem that way.

I can't remember how I felt about Samantha in previous books, but I think I liked her more than I did in previous books. In this novella, she is determined to take her fate into her own hands, even if she doesn't realize that is what she is doing. She accepts help from Gray, and while living in his apartment, she takes to helping the landlady and servant with small things. Samantha has a strength of character that we don't always see in historical romance novels.

Ahh, Gray. He has an artist's heart, and a noble one too. He generously offers his apartment to Samantha; he knows that she is more than she says she is, and he wants to help a lady in a bad situation. He's the son of the Duke of Rowland, but he does not flaunt his title and he isn't interested in multitudes of women. He and Samantha are such a perfect pair; quiet souls, appreciative of the arts, and rich in intelligence.

I remember seeing the pair in Six Degrees of Scandal and wondering, when did Samantha get married? Who is Gray? So while I wish I had held off a few days longer before reading Six Degrees of Scandal, I'm really glad I had the chance to read this novella, and Linden wrote it at all! Samantha probably wasn't one of my favorite characters earlier in the series (for good reason), but I really liked to experience a different side of her, in this novella.

Overall, an excellent addition to the series! I usually don't bother with novellas, but this one was definitely worth the time. If you enjoy Linden's books, or historical romance novels in general, I recommend this novella and series!

What I Did Not Like:

It's a novella but I can't help but want more!

Would I Recommend It:

If you've read any of Linden's books, I'd definitely recommend this one too. Like I said, I'm usually someone who doesn't bother with novellas, but I really, really enjoyed this one. It adds nicely to the series too, as Gray plays a pretty important role in Six Degrees of Scandal.

Rating:

4 stars. If you couldn't tell, I'm a huge fan of this series! I wonder if there will be more books (or novellas) to follow. I would love to read more!

A Study in Scandal is a sweet little novella that can be read any time after the second book in Caroline Linden's delightful Scandalous series. This story is about Samantha, key secondary character in Book 2 and younger sister of Benedict (the hero of Book 3). Up to this point, we have seen a sad, withdrawn Samantha who has been made into a quiet shell of herself due to the harsh emotional abuse of her father, the Earl of Stratford. In this novella, all of that finally changes.

In a fit of terror after Samantha's father threatens to betroth her to a man known throughout the ton for his temper and violence, she flees to London to find her brother and ask him for advice. Being a sheltered woman with no knowledge of the dangers of London, she quickly finds herself in trouble. George Churchill-Gray is the younger son of a duke, a very talented artist, and an all around lovely person. When he senses Samantha's predicament in London, he immediately goes to her rescue, even providing her with shelter at the flat he is currently renting from the voluble (and sometimes money-grabbing) landlady, Mrs. Willis. This sets up a sweet, romantic journey as Gray discovers his muse and Samantha learns to embrace the knowledge she has gathered about art and to enjoy life for the first time.

As always with Linden's stories, there are some twists and turns that propelled me through pages and had me sighing happily at the end. After two rather angsty tales in Book 2 and Book 3 of the series, this was a nice break and a welcome happy ending for a secondary character who has had a rough life up to this point.

For many, novellas are always a risk, but I can assure you that the story does not suffer due to fewer pages here. The characters are fleshed out nicely, the plot is tight, and the romance feels complete. I would highly recommend this little story for those who have been enjoying the Scandalous series (the 50 Ways to Sin pamphlet, of course, makes an appearance!). For those new to Linden, this could still be read as a stand alone, but I think you will enjoy it more if you have read the other books in this series--which you should do anyway because they are great.

This novella had a fairy tale like quality to it and after learning about the darkness in Samantha's life, it was the perfect happy ending for her. Linden just keeps getting better and better. I cannot recommend this Scandalous series enough. It has been wonderful! 5 stars.u

This novella falls between books two and three (It Takes a Scandal and Love in the Time of Scandal) in Caroline Linden’s Scandalous series, and tells the story of Lady Samantha Lennox, the sister of Benedict (hero of book three) and daughter of the cruel and dictatorial Earl of Stratford.

Ms Linden very quickly outlines Samantha’s backstory in the first chapter, but readers of the other books will know that when little more than a girl, she stole a large sum of money from her father in order to help a friend. Unfortunately, her plan backfired and Stratford accused Sebastian Vane of stealing it, and it’s only at the end of It Takes a Scandal that Samantha is eventually persuaded to put things right.

The earl is a harsh and unforgiving man, and intends to punish his daughter by marrying her to the depraved son of a marquess, a man many suspect to be mad. There is nothing her brother or mother can do to help her, and Samantha must resign herself to a life even more miserable to the one she has lived hitherto.

The author very quickly paints a picture of Samantha as a lonely and unhappy young woman, which is not surprising given that her father is unloving, dictatorial and downright nasty, and she has never been allowed to have any friends or, at the advanced (for the time) age of twenty three, any suitors.

When she next goes into Richmond to do some shopping, she impulsively boards the coach for London, intending to find her brother, Benedict, at his regiment’s quarters. When she arrives, she is almost immediately accosted by a couple of men who attempt to abduct her, but are thwarted by the intervention of a gentleman who saves her when she is pushed into the river. He takes her back to his lodgings and gives her into the care of his landlady, insisting on giving up his own rooms so that Samantha can stay the night.

The young man is George, Lord Churchill-Gray, the youngest son of the Duke of Rowland, known familiarly as Gray. He is a gifted artist, and hopes to soon have some of his paintings exhibited by the Royal Academy.

When she recovers from her ordeal, Samantha initially pretends not to know who she is or what she is doing in London, although Gray is sure she is pretending to amnesia simply because she doesn’t want to tell. After a couple of days, she is well enough to go home, and decides that is what she must do; she has no money and no friends to go to and thus no alternative but to return home.

But Gray sees how terrified she is, and eventually she tells him something of her story, although does not reveal her identity as a daughter of the Earl of Stratford, knowing that Gray’s father is one of the earl’s oldest enemies.

He arranges for her to remain at his lodgings and the time Samantha spends there is the happiest she’s ever known. Whether she’s helping with the housework or cataloguing Gray’s paintings, she has a degree of freedom and the friendship of a handsome young man – and even though she knows little of men, begins to wonder what it might be like to be kissed and held; and to dream of something more than friendship.

Samantha and Gray are attractive protagonists who are perfect for each other. There’s a lovely scene in Gray’s studio when he asks her to draw something (all well-bred young ladies learned to draw) and together they produce a cute little scene which tells Gray more than Samantha realises about her situation. He is a true gentleman, considerate, kind and honourable, who wants the best for Samantha and who is prepared to fight for her when the worst happens, and Stratford finds out where she is.

In spite of the relatively small page-count, the two protagonists are strongly characterised and undergo a good amount of character development. Samantha learns what it is to live rather than simply exist and gains the courage to stand up to her father; Gray is devoted to his art, but discovers that there are some things in life that are even more important. The romance is sweet and well-developed and I’d certainly recommend A Study in Scandal to fans of this series.

Lady Samantha Lennox confesses to her emotionally abusive father that seven years ago she stole some money from him; he reacts by arranging a marriage with a dude who sounds like a violent psychopath. She flees to London and nearly ends up as brothel fodder before Lord George Churchill-Gray rescues her. His art project turns into a boner project and they live happily ever after.

1. I'm waiting for All the Duke I Need to come in at the library so I checked out a Linden that sounded interesting and got this little ditty. True story: my library has it mis-labeled as a full entry in the Scandalous series, so I was rather shocked at how quickly things were moving between the hero / heroine, and then further shocked when I realized I was 60% of the way through it. OOPS.

2. I enjoyed the developing relationship between Samantha and Gray: it was quick but not marred by unnecessary secrets or drama. I can see the foundations of a more robust and long-term relationship. It was cute!

3. But the ending was a little...strange. I didn't realize how much it overlapped / intersected with some of Samantha's sibling's stories, so having all those disparate threads yanked together was really confusing and off-balancing. I'm not in any huge rush to read the rest of the Scandalous series—I mean, I likely will read them some day, but I'm picking and choosing a little erratically right now—so the spoiler dump isn't terrible, but it did feel out of place and awkward just because it rather breaks from the tone of the rest of it.

4. INSTALL A LOCK ON YOUR DANG DOOR, GRAY.

Loved it! I wanted to read Samantha's story so bad. Caroline Linden created another romantic, sweet and passionate story in a short novella that you can read in one day.
I am not usually fond of the novella but I loved this one, everything about this short story is perfect. Caroline had Gray and Samantha in Love in the Time of Scandal as secondary characters, I was so curious how they met and fell in love.
Samantha is a sweet and beautiful girl with a horrible father. She made a mistake few years ago and now she is being punished by her cruel father so how can she save herself from this dire situation……………
Gray is the son of the Duke and his passion is painting but when the fate brings Samantha in his life, he will do anything to save her.
This is an amazing novella with great plot.
Thank you Caroline Linden

Trying to right a wrong she made several years ago, Lady Samantha Lenox's confession to her strict father backfires when he sets out to punish her by arranging a marriage to a man Samantha cannot abide by. Desperation has her on the run to find her brother in London, but traveling alone puts her in more danger than she can possibly imagine when she is accosted and almost kidnapped by some shady characters on the streets.

When Lord George Churchill-Grey sees the young lady in trouble, the artist springs into action to save the young miss after she is pushed into the river. After fishing the young lady out of the water, he takes her to his lodgings to figure it all out. Samantha has never been in a situation like this, but being with the talented artist is a welcome sojourn to the upheaval her life has become. When she becomes a willing model for George, the contentment she feels and ease with which the two slip into a budding friendship sparks something that neither is willing to end.

A STUDY IN SCANDAL by Caroline Linden is a short but well written tale of two people who are destined to be together. I felt so much for both George's and Samantha's precarious circumstances and was drawn in immediately. This story is actually my first foray into Caroline Linden's books and I am eager to read more by this talented author.

Isn't this cover beautiful? Sometimes it's hard to give a novella 5 stars, but not this time. I loved Samantha and Gray's story which is part of Caroline Linden's wonderful Scandalous series. This book can be read as a stand alone book.

Samantha is Benedict Lennox's sister. If you've read Ben's story in "Love in the Time of Scandal" you will know how truly horrible their father was. This story takes place right before Ben's. Samantha escapes her father's plans for her by going to London, where she meets Gray. Gray is an artist, but also the son of a Duke. He gives her a safe place to stay and they fall in love. That's all I'm saying as you should read this story for the details and the HEA!

I received an ARC of this novella which comes out February 16th! You will also want to read the final book in this series, "Six Degrees of Scandal" (3/29/16), to find out who has been writing the pamphlet "50 Ways to Sin". I can't wait to see if my guess is correct!

This a great addition to the scandalous series. Samantha is a kind and independent and she makes such a good match with George. He is sweet to her and just wants to keep her safe. A great little adventure and a few moments that have you hoping that there will that happy ever after.

“Do you remember what I said earlier? About being a little bit in love with you?”
His eye opened, gleaming at her like a cat’s.
“I lied,” Samantha whispered, touching the corner of his mouth. “I’m more than a little bit in love with you.”
“Good,” he murmured back. “Because I’m utterly mad about you, my darling.”

I inhaled A Study in Scandal in a single sitting, punctuated only by copious amounts of swooning and grinning on my end. Samantha and Gray were absolutely charming and shared a sweet, breathless chemistry that made buying into their rather instantaneous romance quite easy to do. They fell in love through doodles of rabbits and skunks for crying out loud! Now if that’s not true love, then I don’t know what is.

Oh, and something else I really loved about this novella was that Gray was an artist and his descriptions of Samantha, expressed in such vivid detail and color, reflected that just beautifully.
“For a moment he admired the scene: the closely packed buildings cast into deep shadow, the bustling crowd flowing along the pavement like a human river, and then her, lovely and unhurried like a goddess stepped down to earth for the first time. It put him in mind of the work of Raphael or Titian, the way the light seemed to pick her out of the crowd and bathe her in a heavenly glow.”

MORE ARTIST HEROES, PLEASE.

Edit 3/19: As soon as Caroline Linden announced that Gray’s brother Rob would be the hero of her upcoming book When the Marquess Was Mine, I knew A Study in Scandal required a reread. And just like the first time around, it succeeded in hitting me with all the right feels while also surprising me with its hidden depth fueled by the beautiful connection forged by the two leads. In my humble opinion, Samantha and Gray’s romance remains one of the best Caroline has ever written.

Review originally published at Romancing Romances.

I received an eARC at no cost from the author, and I am leaving a voluntary and honest review. Thank you.

Although not a fan of novellas, it’s always a pleasure to read the one written by Caroline Linden.

The hero, Lord George, is an artist, and the way the author describes his works, and his portraits of Lady Samantha, is so good you can visualize them perfectly when reading.

I liked the chemistry and spark you could feel between the main characters. And how easy it was to hate/really dislike Samantha’s father, and therefore support Samantha and George in their love. A forced proximity kind of trope, I would say.

A short review for a delightful, yet short book.

My first Caroline Linden. It was an ok read. I didn't find it very memorable or special. But it was a smooth story.

I do find the style a bit too modern for my taste though. "50 ways to Sin"? Ring a bell for anyone? And calling your future father-in-law papa? I don't know. It doesn't seem appropriate for the period. Maybe I am too used to brooding heros who have difficult relationships with their fathers. George's father the Duke seems too much like a modern loving dad.

What a wonderful novella!
Samantha is the daughter of the Earl of Stratford, an art connoisseur and ultimate villain. When he finds out she stole some money from him eight years ago and gave it to one of his enemies, he decides to marry her to a knowingly violent man.
Desperate, Samantha runs away and ends up in London being chased by ruffians.
George is a younger son of a Duke and a very talented painter.
Their ways cross and it is so romantic and lovely!
Great novella!

The fmc's father is abusive and wants to marry her off to a terrible man, so she flees to London to find her brother. On her journey she is attacked and the mmc does what he can to help her.

For a novella, the romantic build up is done well. I like how accepting they are of each other, and how they incorporate their art into their relationship.

I also appreciate that the villains were so believable. They're manipulative and good at hiding their true natures.

After 7 years of keeping her secret, Lady Samantha Lennox is finally going to confess to her father that it was her and not Sebastian Vale that stole the money from him. The Earl of Stratford is a cold, ruthless man with an obsession for perfection, his family is terrified of him. But Samantha will not be the reason that Sebastian cannot marry the love of his life. Her father takes the news oddly well and does not rage or punish her, when a few days pass with no repercussions, she thinks that maybe she got lucky. But the morning of the third day she learns that that was wishful thinking, the earl says that he has decided that she should marry and has decided on Lord Phillip, the second son of the Marquess of Dorre - a cruel, debauched and brutal man. Even her mother is horrified and tries to intervene - a rarity - but her father has decided and expects Samantha to obey.

Samantha runs away to London, thinking her brother will help her - but when she arrives, she is almost kidnapped and then pushed into the river - if not for the quick actions of a stranger, she would have died.

Lord George Churchill-Gray, Gray to his friends is a younger son of the Duke of Rowlands and an up and coming artist. He is on his way to buy some pigments, when he sees Samantha - he is drawn to her, but keeps walking, when he turns for one last look, he realizes she is in distress and goes to help. When one of the men drags her away, he acts and gives chase - only to find her in the river. He saves her and she says she can't remember who she is. He takes her back to his rented rooms and hands her over the care of his landlady. He doesn't really believe she has amnesia, but still feels protective of her. When he offers help, she says she must go home. He takes her to the coaching inn the next day, but when she sees her father, she runs again. Gray again offers to help and she gives him the barest of details and only tells him her first name. He brings her back to the house and they settle into a routine and form a friendship.

Soon, Samantha wants more and thanks to the maid Jenny, she knows what she wants thanks to the 50 ways to sin pamphlets that Jenny has loaned her. When Gray's art is selected for the Royal Academy's exhibit and he takes her to a private viewing, they go to a pub afterwards to celebrate. She dances and drinks and then boldly tells Gray that she wants him. They make love and Gray forms a new plan - a plan to keep Samantha with him always. But when her father finally finds her, will he force her to marry Lord Phillip and ruin Gray or will true love win the day??

This was an absolutely delightful novella, well written and paced perfectly. I loved Samantha and Gray and believed they were in love. The secondary characters are wonderful, the love scenes warm, the interaction between Samantha and Gray is sweet and the ending is perfect. This is part of the Scandals Series, but it could be read as a stand alone title - although, fair warning once you read this, you are going to want to read the other books!!

As reviewed at Roses Are Blue: http://wp.me/p3QRh4-kL

Lady Samantha Lennox is carrying the guilt of an act of theft she committed years ago. While the theft wasn't for her own benefit, and was intended to right a wrong, the results had the opposite effect than she'd hoped. Unable to live with the lie any longer, Samantha decides to confess her actions to her cruel father, despite her mother and brother begging her not to. She hopes that her genuine remorse will soften her father's hard heart, but he retaliates by engaging her to a man who is as cruel and cold as he is.

On an impulse, Samantha boards a stagecoach to London, hoping to obtain her brother's help. No sooner does she arrive, but she's accosted by two lowlife criminals, intent on kidnapping her. A passing gentleman, George Churchill-Gray, realizes what's happening and comes to her rescue. His pursuit causes one of the oafs to push Samantha into the river, and as Gray is saving her, they escape.

Gray takes Samantha to his rooms, and allows her to stay there, with the landlady caring for her, while he goes up to his attic studio to stay. As well as being the son of a duke, Gray is an artist. Samantha doesn't want to disclose her identity until she decides what to do, and Gray, being a perfect gentleman, doesn't press her. She eventually comes to the conclusion that she has no choice but to go home and throw herself on her father's mercy, but she procrastinates, as she's grown very fond of her rescuer.

Gray is intelligent enough to realize that Samantha is carrying a heavy burden, and is living in dread, so he is in no hurry to have her leave. She begins to catalogue his paintings, and he asks her to pose for him. These two amiable and likeable people form a fast friendship while a simmering attraction starts to develop. Just as it appears that Gray may be the answer to Samantha’s prayers, happiness is snatched out of their grasp.

For those who have followed this series, Samantha is sister to Benedict, whose story is told in Love in the Time of Scandal. They have both suffered at the hands of their cruel father, who is truly an odious villain. Gray and Samantha are wonderful protagonists, deserving of their happy ever after. A Study in Scandal is a very well written and enjoyable read. I recommend reading the whole Scandalous series by Caroline Linden in order to fully appreciate all the nuances of this story, and of course, the references to the notorious pamphlet, 50 Ways to Sin. Reading this was pure delight!

Disappointing Finish

I really enjoyed Linden’s writing and the story of the charming son of a duke who became an artist was intriguing. When he saved Lady Samantha Lennox who is running away from her cruel father, I was eager to see how they would overcome the obstacles to their love. I was a bit surprised when she, a proper young lady, suggested they have sex. But what led me to give the story 3 stars was the ending, or lack of it. I guess this must be a novella and I didn’t realize it.

Suddenly her father, who had always been cruel and rigid, for no reason, agrees to let his daughter marry his enemy’s son. What? And all is instantly resolved. Truly disappointing. Then came several epilogues, the longest of which had no meaning for me as it referred to others in narrative fashion.

I might read a novel (full length) by this author but, next time, I’d want a full story.

TEN Stars🌟 for ROMANCE MAGIC💕!

What a wonderful and compelling book! Having read several thousand romances💕 in the past couple of years, this short book rates among the five best I have ever read!
There is just something about the entire book that struck me as sincere. It's a true 💘love story that will stand the test of time...

I was immediately drawn into the plight of Samantha💃💔, caged by society and her controlling, severe, and overbearing father, Earl of Stratford👹. Her father manipulates his entire family by being a terrifying tyrant, a little 👑King in his family, while playing the benevolent patron of the arts among his peers.

Samantha💃💔 fears her father's wrath so much she runs away to London to find her brother, but she is kidnapped by human traffickers within minutes of arriving!
One man, Lord George Gray🐺🍆⛲🎨, a Duke's second son and an immensely talented but struggling artist🎨, sees the crime and is able to rescue her.

Samantha💃💔 is afraid to tell Lord Gray🐺🍆⛲🎨 who she is, because his father is already her father's enemy. She fears her vindictive father will now destroy George🐺🍆⛲🎨 and his family......

I promise, you will absolutely fall in 💘love with this book! Recommend!

While Benedict and Penelope's story was disappointing, I enjoyed Samantha's. If you've read the series to this point, this is not a spoiler (but if you haven't this is). Samantha confesses her theft to her father (who is emotionally and verbally abusive to his children and spouse, and physically abusive to his son). As punishment, he arranged her betrothal to the 2nd son of one of the peerage who has a nasty, cruel reputation. On an impulse, Samantha takes runs away to London. Things happen, she meets Gray.
I really like Samantha and thought she found her voice. This also shows women's lack of rights and limitations. She was helped/saved because a man stepped up to help. Gray was an awesome hero. His family was supportive and I would have liked more page time with them. Brief mention of Clarey in this one (he was the villain in previous) with preview of what happens to him in the next book.

Caroline Linden is a fairly new author for me. Prior to the series, I had only read 4 other books by her. This is now my 10th book by her. I hadn't planned on reading more of her books because as someone that reads over 350 books a year, I found some of her books a bit too expensive. I had been searching around and her name popped up again so thought I would check her out. So glad I did. Book 1 in this series was so damn good and I couldn't put it down so now I must finish the whole series.

Super cute couple. I really enjoyed Samantha and George's story. It's interesting because Amazon has this series a bit out of order but it looks like Goodreads lists them correctly. If you want to read this series, I would go by the Goodreads order.

I was surprised how much was included in this novella. This was a good paced read with plenty of action. The two main characters, Samantha and Gray were very likeable. Samantha showed she had spirit by her actions, even though her father ruled his household very severely. Gray was all you would want in a hero, brave, kind hearted, talented and handsome. This was an entertaining read with two very different fathers and a passionate romance. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This one improved on a reread and was an enjoyable addition to the Scandalous series.
It gives more understanding to the lives of Benedict ( books 2 and 3) and his sisters- Elizabeth and Samantha's lives under a cruel and abusive father .
I would love at some time for Caroline Linden to write the scene between Gray's father the Duke of Rowland and Samantha's father the cruel Earl of Stratford over the wedding negotiations for Gray and Samantha. One can only hope the Duke had some thing delicious on Stratford.

Samantha and Gray find their Happy ever after and we get to meet them in books 3 and 4.

Finished this yesterday so I should probably write a review before I forget, but...this was fine? I'm not as thrilled by her novellas, the full-length novels are definitely better, but I did like this one better than the other novella in the series.
