Set in Sydney in the 1950s this short novella gives us a glimpse of love and romance in times gone past. Amanda is a 21 year old secretary from a good, honest working class background with a boyfriend she hopes to marry but she worries that she may not fit into his more upper class world. She also worries that he might be cheating on her and is beginning to wonder if she can trust him.

Margaret Sharp is very good at capturing the essence of this time period and the behaviour of her characters. She writes very cleanly and is good at capturing the emotions and conflicting feelings experienced by the women in her stories. A charming, sweet romance.

4.5s

Amanda was set to enjoy her weekend; Saturday was always a lovely day after her solid five days at the secretarial job she held at the lawyer’s office. Off to the beach first then a quick catch up with her best friend Sally before dinner with her boyfriend Kevin that evening. She was excited about seeing Kevin again – their relationship felt right to twenty one year old Amanda; she wondered if he was “the one”…

But an unexpected shock marred the day – and when Kevin suggested she meet his family for dinner the following Thursday evening, she felt unsure. She knew Kevin’s family were well to do – much higher in the food chain than she or her family were. What would happen when Amanda met Kevin’s mother? Her nerves were on high alert – was she courageous enough to follow her heart? And could she trust in the words of a stranger?

I thoroughly enjoyed Uncertain Love, the latest novella by Aussie author Margaret Lynette Sharp. It is a beautifully told sweet rendition of love in the 1950s and shows the sometimes deep uncertainty of following your heart. A quick and easy read which I highly recommend.

Uncertain Love is a novella by Australian author, Margaret Lynette Sharp. Amanda is looking forward to her Saturday: some time at the beach, a milkshake with her friend Sally, and a night out with her boyfriend, Kevin. So when she sees him on the promenade with a beautiful blonde, she is confused and hurt. Sally convinces Amanda to give him the benefit of the doubt, convinced that there will be a perfectly innocent explanation, but when they later meet, Kevin makes no mention of it.

Kevin invites her to meet his well-to-do parents, a fancy dinner at their luxurious home: could this mean he intends to pop the question? But, already feeling intimidated by Kevin’s mother, Amanda is dismayed to see the same blonde amongst the dinner guests. Just what is going on? Can she trust Kevin?

Sharp’s forte is sweet romance set in the 1950s, and she excels with this one. The plot may be fairly predictable, but it is well executed, and the last lines are bound to bring a smile to the reader’s lips. The feel of the 1950s is expertly rendered with details of leisure activities, social functions, food, music and fashion. A very enjoyable read.

Margaret Lynette SharpUncertain Love
A friend recommended this novella to me and I'm very glad I bought the eBook. It has often been said not to judge a book by its cover and I agree. However, "Uncertain Love" has the perfect cover to go with the story of a young 21-year old girl who is uncertain of her feelings for Kevin - someone she's known for a long time. His family is status conscious and wealthy. This fact in itself makes her feel unworthy of him - just being a legal secretary - because his family are architects and more.
At a turning-point in her life, she goes for a milkshake with her school friend, Sally and at Sam's Milk bar, she meets Todd. They hit it off and she finds it easy to talk to him. They have much in common - their love of music and singing - for example. Where will their friendship go? The plot weaves a masterful tale of uncertainty, highs and lows in Amanda's life and a nagging mother, which leads to a few life-changing decisions.
The author has a way with words, for example, "A tsunami of self-consciousness overwhelmed me ..." and her short descriptions of the beach, the calming effect of the sun, rustling wind in a woodland, help to set the scene for good, believable dialogue. I cannot tell you the end, but I thoroughly enjoyed this short novella and sighed with contentment when I finished reading it. If you're looking for a clean, romantic read and a respite in your busy schedule, this novella is for you!

This book introduces you to Amanda, in love with Kevin until her confidence shatters when seeing him with another girl.

With Uncertain Love, Margaret Lynette Sharp provides us with a romantic novella about a young woman and her insecurity. Once again, the readers find themselves in Australia of the 1950s, including the mindsets of that era. Romance is not my typical genre, therefore I really like that this novella is not a hard-core romance. The story 'has soul' and gives a good insight in Amanda's feelings. The story is touching, makes the readers remember their feelings they had at that age. I automatically tried to cheer Amanda on; she is a very likeable character. The characters are real enough to be family members, friends or acquaintances. I had a good time reading Uncertain Love.

1950, Sydney, Australia. Amanda Jones (21, legal secretary, Jamison, Marsden & Cope) lived with her Mum & Dad (building industry).
She & Kevin (Amanda’s BF) were seeing each other quite reguraly.
Amanda’s parents approved of him whole-heartedly.
Todd (car salesman, bandleader) & Amanda went out to discuss her relationship with Kevin.
Kevin invited Amanda over for dinner to meet his side of the family.

Those in attendance were: Clive (husband/ Kevin’s dad), Claudia (wife/ Kevin’s mom), James (Kevin’s brother, Lorraine’s husband), Lorraine (30+, James’ wife, Sydney University), William Hodge (Clive’s business partner) Elizabeth (William’s 2nd. wife, stepmother) & Melanie (20, William’s daughter).

Will Kevin & Amanda fall in love?
What about Todd Grant?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written down-under romance (novella) book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great down-under romance movie, better yet a mini TV series. To be continued? A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Very Short story

This was a nice little book that went quickly. A prequel to a pitty party. This book was very anti upper crust people. It really did nothing to explain cheating. This was a very choppy book, writing or editing?
