Reader beware: reading books by Julie Mulhern may cause swooning, obsessive reading, and addiction.
I'll be honest: I'm teetering on the edge of objectivity and just plain geeking out about how much I love and enjoy not only Clouds In My Coffee, but all of the books in the Country Club Murders series and, quite frankly, anything and everything that comes from Julie Mulhern. I just absolutely adore the setting, the characters (Anarchy!), the humor and wit infused in every story.
In Clouds In My Coffee, Ellison finds herself housing several family members who have popped into town. First it's her aunt and then it's her sister. (Soon enough it's a certain detective . . . but I'm getting ahead of myself.) Everyone's in town for a huge party being arranged by Ellison's mother - a true Queen Bee of KC. At a pre-event party, Ellison is nearly killed by a falling bust, pushed out of the way with only moments to spare by a fawning (and married) admirer of her (also married) sister. Had that been the only mishap, all might have been well. But that was followed by a fire bomb and gun shots and poison. Everyone is on high alert and Ellison can't imagine who would want to kill her - or why. But if not her, who is the killer after?
I was practically drooling with anticipation of reading Clouds In My Coffee, and found myself forcibly slowing down to savor and enjoy all of the rich details, rather than simply rushing through the find out what happens to whom and for-the-love-of-God-why-doesn't-every-scene-feature-Anarchy-Jones?! This is arguably my favorite cozy series currently on the market and I can't wait to see what happens next! (If I may make a suggestion? More Anarchy and less Hunter. K thx!)

The family drama is through the roof in this third installment to The Country Club Murders series. I could feel Ellison's frustration just oozing out of the pages. Her aunt is staying with her because she can't play nice with Ellison's mother. Sister Marjorie has left her husband in Ohio and is also in house while catting around with old flames. Then there are the murder attempts -- all with Ellison in close proximity. No wonder both Hunter and Anarchy are concerned and hovering. Such a delicious love triangle! And having beloved Kansas City landmarks like Loose Park feature prominently in the narrative is like the icing on the cake. Can't wait to read. Book #4!

The benefit that Ellison Russell’s mother has been working on for months is about to happen, and Ellison finds herself as a last-minute host for her aunt and sister, both of whom are in town to show their support. However, it is Ellison who might in danger when someone tries to drop a statue on her. Then they firebomb her house. Ellison doesn’t think anyone is after her, but can she figure out what is going on before she is killed?
It has been far too long since I read the first two books in the series, but that wasn’t an issue when I picked this book up. I was quickly back in Ellison’s world and enjoying every second of it. Between the conversations between the characters and a few incidents, I laughed quite a few times. The plot was a bit more focused on the family drama, which made the mystery weaker than I would normally like, but I was still hooked the entire time, so I didn’t really mind. The characters are strong, and I enjoyed reuniting with them and watching their relationships develop, although I did get annoyed with Ellison’s insistence that she didn’t need protection when she clearly did. The story wanders into some more mature topics – I’d rate this book as PG-13 as a result. The 70’s setting comes to life and adds to the fun. If you are looking for a pleasant trip back to the 70’s, this is the book and series for you.

This series just keeps getting better and better!
The Country Club Murders by author Julie Mulhern are a mystery filled trip back to the 70's. In the seventies I was ages 4 - 12. While my family never held a country club membership, we knew several people from that group. Mulhern has represented the people and era perfectly.
Ms. Mulhern is a superb author. Her writing style is crisp and clear, and will not only hold your attention, but will pull you into the story. With CLOUDS IN MY COFFEE, the story to me was even more intense than the first two books in the series. Edgier than the cozies I read and review 99.9% of the time, this book, indeed this series is still one most cozy mystery fans, as well as fans of many other genres, will surely to enjoy.

Ellison Russell — a widowed artist and a member of Kansas City’s WASP elite —returns in Julie Mulhern’s third novel in this cozy series, set in the fall of 1974. One near-miss might be an accident, but when a falling marble bust from overhead is swiftly followed by a firebombing and some bullets, it becomes painfully clear that someone is trying to kill Ellison — but why? Ellison hasn’t got the slightest idea about that.
What Ellison does know is that she can’t cope with her houseguests: her selfish, promiscuous sister Marjorie, who is separating from her husband; her free-spirited Aunt Sis, returned from Majorca; and the sexy police Detective Anarchy Jones, ensconced in her carriage house in order to protect her from further attempts. That’s not including debonair lawyer Hunter Tafft, Jones’ rival for Ellison’s affections, who is not sleeping under Ellison’s roof — but sure would like to. What’s a woman to do?
Both of the previous books in the series, The Deep End and Guaranteed to Bleed, were five-star fabulous, and Clouds in My Coffee measures up to that high standard. The novel exudes the same fun and perfect rendition of the 1970s as Mulhern’s first two books in the series. And, as one who lived it, I want to know just how the young Mulhern provides such spot-on 1970s details, right down to Bill Blass couture, so-called key parties, and harvest-gold everything.
Please forgive the cliché, but I couldn’t put Clouds in My Coffee down and stayed up way too late! I drank down every delicious drop as eagerly as a bleary-eye Ellison approaches her first precious cup from her beloved Mr. Coffee machine.

I love Ellison. She is a magnet for murder and crazy people, unfortunately for her.
Her family, minus daughter Grace, and her dad, Harrington (I will have to flip through the book and check on that, he isn’t often referred to by name, so it didn’t stick in my head. 12/5/25: my memory worked!! Just came across his name in the next book and I was correct. Yay me!!) are a bit too dramatic for my taste! Aunt Sis, her mother’s sister, and Marjorie, her own sister, are a bit of a handful. But her mother definitely wins top prize for family member I would least like to have!! She has her good points, like having everyone at the hospital fear her wrath so stuff gets done when her name is mentioned, but it’s like cracking a smile is against her personal beliefs in life.
Ellison is getting better about not letting her mom wear her down as much as she used to. But now she has her basically estranged aunt and her own sister who she is not what you would call close to, at her doorstep, both staying with her unexpectedly. Both with plenty of secrecy and drama packed in their suitcases. Yikes.
Hunter and Anarchy…things are heating up with both it seems. I know who I would ultimately choose (and because I read the blurb to a book further in the series, I know who she ends choosing 🤦🏼♀️🤪😂 but mums the word. Not going to spoil that for anyone else.
Do you ever get like a piece of dust or something that gets stuck in that exact spot that makes you sneeze a million times in a row? That is annoyingly happening to me and I must have sneezed out all of my thoughts because i can’t remember what else I was going to say. Plus I need to blow my nose now. Tmi🙄.

Wow. Each book in this series just gets better and better. Clouds in My Coffee was an outstanding book in an excellent series.
I love Ellison. She is absolutely hilarious! She has a spine, and isn’t afraid to tell people what she thinks. I also like Anarchy, though I wish we’d find out more about him. He’s still shrouded in mystery. The new characters introduced in this book; Aunt Sis and Marjorie are also wonderfully written. I hope we see more of them in the next book!
The mystery was excellent, but it takes a back seat to the characters and their problems, which is fine. Some authors try to do this and don’t pull it off. Ms. Mulhern tries it and wonderfully pulls it off!
Overall an absolutely wonderful book. I absolutely can not recommend this enough! I will read the next one!

Autumn in Kansas City, Missouri, is the time for auctions, galas, and get-togethers. Ellison Russell’s home is overflowing with house guests, from her Aunt Sis to her sister Marjorie.
Marjorie seems to have left her husband Greg, and in her attempt to feel better about the situation, is conducting herself in a very flirtatious manner, while showing a lot of cleavage.
Aunt Sis is hiding something, and hints of a big secret come out when Frances, mother to Marjorie and Ellison, makes some remarks.
The first of many attempts on the unknown target’s life begins at the auction when a bust falls over the rail and almost strikes Ellison. But nobody is sure she was the intended victim. However, when someone firebombs her house later, it is beginning to look like she is.
At the gala, place cards have been switched around for various reasons, so nobody is sure who was supposed to be sitting in the seat Ellison has taken…and even stranger is the fact that Hammie Walsh, who just happened to grab Ellison’s “water” glass, dies from some kind of poisoning.
Anarchy Jones is front and center in the investigation, and as more deadly episodes occur, the mystery ratchets up. Secrets are revealed, and strange alliances form. Clouds in My Coffee was an engaging book that drew me into the world of the 1970s and to the connections between the characters.
As always, I loved watching the attraction grow between Anarchy and Ellison. I also liked seeing the sisters argue and one-up each other. First, the older generation of sisters: Frances and Cecelia (Sis); and then Marjorie and Ellison.
I didn’t figure out who was the target and who the perpetrator until the end, so I was pleased with how the story unfolded. A definite 5 star read.

I think it would be very helpful to read this author's mysteries in order. There was too much I wanted to know about the main character's past that was hinted at but never revealed in this series' #3 mystery.

These humorous mysteries do a great job of capturing the mores of the 70s with interesting characters and devious plots. Ellison is torn between love for her family and the dysfunctional relationships that make that easy to forget.

Now and again, I try to read some of my older eBooks and today's one Clouds in my Coffee was an older cozy mystery read by Henery Press. Henery Press was one of my favorite publishing companies for Cozy mysteries as they are easy to read and keep readers entertained. Clouds in my Coffee can also be read as a stand-alone or part of the series. This book starts with introducing readers to Ellison who we learn is now a widower as her husband Henry was killed. Henry, we learned not only cheated on Ellison but also was a secret holder and used it as currency. In this book, someone is out to kill Ellison it seems as if everywhere she goes - danger strikes and someone ends up dead or close to dying. Who is out to kill Ellison and the biggest question is Why? This was such a fun read and I enjoyed the crazy dynamics of Ellison's family - in a way it reminded me of Stephanie Plum's family by Janet Evanovich. If you love cozy mysteries, then the Country Club Murders by Julie Mulhern is the read for you.

It's here! Clouds in My Coffee, the third book in The Country Club Murders series, is finally out and it's every bit as good as the first two. Set among St. Louis's country club set in the 1970s, my favorite characters have returned for another round of charity galas, dinners at the club, and, of course, a few gentle murders. We are introduced to Ellison's estranged sister, Marjorie, her eccentric Aunt Sis, and long-hidden family secrets are unearthed. Romantic tension between Ellison and her would-be suitors detective Anarchy Jones and thrice-divorced lawyer Hunter Tafft heats to a slow simmer.
As a relative newcomer to cozy mysteries, Mulhern's books have become my gold standard for the genre. They are perfect escapist reading - fun, breezy, and entertaining, yet never too silly or fluffy. And the characters grow more three-dimensional with each installment. I can't wait for Book 4!

Poor Ellison, I am sure she would love to just take some time off and relax. Alas, this isn’t the book to do it. Her mother is usual over bearing self, both her Aunt and her Sister are visiting, each with secrets and baggage of their own, and oh yeah, it would seem someone is trying to kill her.
Once again the author has written a brilliant world for the reader to escape into. The early seventies is a fantastic backdrop for Ellison’s story and her characters are expertly crafted. The compare and contrast between Mother and Aunt Sis with Ellison and Marjorie is a great touch.
As with the previous books Ellison’s sarcasm, lost on most of the more oblivious people in her life, drive the story with its humorous touch. There is plenty of suspense and the occasional red herring. This my favorite book of the series. As with all the books it read great as a stand alone, and even better a part of the wonderful series.

I simply love the Country Club Murder series. Since I live just across the state line, I can easily envision the local setting as it was in the 70's. In Clouds In My Coffee, Ellison seems to have drawn some unwanted attention from someone intent on harming her, much to the chagrin of her mother, a Country Club elitist who is more concerned with appearances than with her daughter's well-being. Circumstances have a quirky Aunt and an estranged sister residing temporarily with Ellison, and later a hunky detective who tries to keep her safe -and close, very close. The nearness of the detective definitely doesn't set well with Ellison's lawyer, who also has feelings for her. Daughter Grace is a typical teenager.
I love the characters in this series and their varied personalities. I especially like the family dynamics that are so true to form. The romantic element is evident, but subdued and well done. Can't wait to read the next book.

Ellison Russell is dismayed when she opens her door to find her sister there. She is expecting her Aunt as a guest and both are not really wanted at this time. Thus starts a new adventure for Ellison. She misses being hurt by a falling object, being shot at, fire bomb at her home. Her Dad insists that she has police protection and Anarchy moves into the garage apartment. Her Aunt had not been home for a number of years and she has a secret reason for returning. The themes are blended together for an enchanting and funny story. I recommend this series highly.

★★★★½ I must say, I didn't have great expectations when I started this book and therefore liking this book was an absolute surprise to me, I didn't think I would enjoy this book so much. The main character is just so lovable, the side characters entertaining and the setting interesting and different. I will definitely look out for this author in the future!

I love Ellison and her complicated family. So much family drama in this one. Whew! I don’t usually enjoy a series where a heroine is torn between two guys. Even when I do like them, I rarely struggle to choose a favorite. Yikes! I am really torn between Hunter and Anarchy. I’m devouring this series like a junkie. On to book 4!

Oh good god, this book was rip roaring hilarious! I was listening to the book in my car and I am sure that other drivers thought I was a crazy woman as I was laughing hysterically at points. One guy at a stoplight kept staring at me so I just waved and kept on giggling! This is the best book in the series yet! Someone is out to kill Ellison and she has absolutely no idea why. The twists and turns are as funny as they are serious. I have got to download the next book now!

There was a lot going on in this book. I had multiple theories. They did not pan out but the conclusion did track once we got there. My only complaint is that we tied up loose ends a bit quickly again. Though it was more satisfyingly done than the previous book. I still look forward to more of Ellison’s adventures.
I think part of why I like these books so much is they feel like an old school soap. A very lived in little town/social group with long histories and grudges. We’ve got affairs, secret babies, love triangles, generally messy families, snobbery/classism. And it all feels pretty believable.

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book!
Ellison Russell’s mother is planning a huge gala but when unexpected family, her daughter, Marjorie, and her sister, Sis, show up she is anything but pleased. She sends them to Ellison’s. They haven’t been home in years, why now? Nothing is going to ruin her event. What would people think?
At a pre-gala party Ellison is almost killed by a falling sculpture, then someone throws a Molotov cocktail at her house and bullets are flying. Then at the gala dinner she is almost poisoned. Why would someone want Ellison dead? Until the culprit is caught another guest moves in with Ellison, hunky detective Anarchy Jones. This leaves prospective husband, at least in her mother’s eyes, Hunter Tafft a little upset. Marjorie has Ellison simmering because she may be married but that doesn’t stop her from flirting with every man in sight and maybe a little more with one or two. Ellison hasn’t got time to be worrying about her sister’s antics. She has to catch a killer before he succeeds in killing her.
Julie Mulherm has written another outstanding story.
These characters are so much fun. Frances Russell, Ellison’s mom, is the epitome of the country club wife. She has her committees and does lunch and does everything the “right” way, her way. Her daughters seem to always be letting her down and even when there are far away from trouble, which I know, isn’t often, they still get the blame. Especially Ellison. Ellison has grown since the series started. She knows how to handle her mother, or get her father to handle her mother. Marjorie is at a crossroads, “things always looks greener” situation. Ellison tries her best to get her back on track. Aunt Sis, is a free spirit and a huge thorn in Frances’ side. She has a secret and that is why she has returned to Kansas City. Ellison just needs to run interference between all over them and hopes that before any permanent damage is done, they all go back where they came from.
There is non-stop action from the start to the finish. The killer seems to be pretty incompetent, so many tries to murder Ellison, and thankfully they haven’t succeeded. I really enjoyed that no one knew the motivation behind the attempts. Not even Detective Jones. It’s hard to catch a suspect when the victim really has no enemies or at least no one that would want her dead.
The story like the first two installments is set in the early 70’s. I love the references to the early television shows and police investigations without all the technology we have today.
I need to mention that along with all the drama there is a fair amount of humor. The way this family interacts both in stressful and not so stressful moments may have you giggling and even laughing out loud.
This story checks all my boxes for a perfect escape. Awesome plot, terrific characters and set in a wonderful time. This truly is one of my favorite series!

Clouds in my Coffee is the third Country Club Murders book by Julie Mulhern, and I believe it is the best one yet. Ellison Russell is a recently widowed mother, who found out her husband was not only cheating on her, but was rather kinky at that. She is a member of the County Club set and does not need to worry about money at all. She seems to stumble onto or run over dead bodies and has enough accidents that her mother is on speed dial at the hospital. This addition to the series does not so much have her stumbling onto dead bodies as it does having her avoid becoming a victim herself. After almost being killed several times (4 times in this book) and having a woman die at her table at her mother's gala, Ellison is put under police protection.
This book introduces another family member, Aunt Sis, and lets us get to know her sister Marjorie a lot better. As they both end up as houseguests at Ellison's place. Her aunt can be as haughty as her mother, but she is often described in the story as an aging hippie. She wears her hair in a greying ponytail and caftans are her formal wear. Marjorie is involved in a midlife crisis and there is another man involved in her life. Relationships get more complicated, family secrets come to light, and the mystery feels more dangerous because it hits very close to home. Of course we can not forget about the romance, or near romance in the story. Ellison is being pursued by two very eligible bachelors. Anarchy Jones the detective and Hunter Tafft the well connected lawyer. Her mother is pushing Hunter, as he is part of their social circle, but it seems Aunt Sis is rather fond of Anarchy. Unfortunately due to her trust issues with men, Ellison is not ready for a relationship with either man, but it does not stop her kisses and the tingling she gets from both of them. This is a fun part of the story that I look forward to in each book. It is a touch decision and each man offers different things to Ellison.
Ellison is a great character. She is tough, strong, independent, loyal, loving and supportive to her family and the kind of person I would love to have as a friend. I love the setting in the 70s. I lived it and this hits so true, it also adds a different touch to this cozy series. The stories are fun, the family is quirky, the Country Club set is snobby and I wish that I was there! A great series that I would recommend to cozy mystery readers as well as anyone who loved the the 70s. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

Ellison Russel's back, and inasmuch as she no longer wants to see dead bodies nearby, it seemed like Death continued to stalk her. After her sister and aunt's surprise visit in her home, she was almost killed in a benefactor's party, her house almost burned down, and someone shot at her with a gun. Oh and the next day, her seatmate at a gala party was poisoned from the glass of water that she herself was supposed to sip. Could it just be coincidence? Was she really the target? Or Is this an act of revenge?
Luckily, hottie Detective Anarchy Jones got her back again. But it seemed little sister Marjorie also got her eyes on him. And among other men. Aunt Sis, on the other hand, looked like she's got a hidden agenda for her visit. One death threat after another, Ellison's mother was annoyed by all this hullabaloo. She couldn't even take sympathy on her poor daughter's life and death situation. How cruel!
Clouds in My Coffee, like the first two books (A Deep End and Guaranteed To Bleed) managed to exercise my brain to come up with all the plausible solutions and possible suspects in a murder investigation. Set in the 1970s where rotary phones were the highlight of communication, this book gives me that funky cool vibes of dating and simple urban life, without the hassles and bustle of high-end technology.
The characters were fun to read, especially Ellison's and Anarchy Jones. You could feel their chemistry, the spark, the unmistakable attraction between these two, but no one acted on their feelings. And I quite like it, because it made their relationship more mysterious and baffling
The murder / death threats were equally mystifying. I had three suspects in my head, none of which were deemed correct in the end. I loved that the mystery was unpredictable and highly anticipated. Julie Mulhern did a great job keeping her readers engaged and engrossed. Clouds in my Coffee deserves my 4 coffee-cup rating!

Ever since first seeing the cover reveal for this book, I knew I needed to get it. I really like The Deep End, the first in the series. I had to get Guaranteed To Bleed, the second book in the series. Because I needed to read Clouds In My Coffee. My husband and I met in the '70's when You're So Vain by Carly Simon was constantly playing. I have had that song going through my head every time I see this cover.
Anyway, I loved this book also. Ellison is coping pretty well after the betrayal death of her cheating husband. Her mother wants her to date certain men, one of which is Hunter. He's a really nice guy and really cares for Ellison. And then there is Anarchy Jones. He also really cares for Ellison. Both men want to keep Ellison safe when it seems someone is trying to kill her.
It's another madcap story in the life of Ellison. I can't wait to see what comes up in the next book!
(I had to buy a bottle of Kinky Liqueur because of the story behind the character Kinky.)

"Clouds in My Coffee," what was I expecting? Murder...check. Mystery...check. Sarcastic banter...check. Sexual tension...check. Wait a minute. There must be a book four! Ellison's love interests...what happens? Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed every minute of the Country Club Murders. But, I was expecting some closure. Julie Mulhern has given life to Mr. Coffee and used more golf analogies than I thought possible, all while keeping me turning pages to find out " who done it." I hope there is another mystery or two in Ellison's future. (Oh, by the way, I would buy the paperbacks just for the cover art!!)

There were clouds in my coffee... clouds in my coffee. Careful Ellison! There might be more than cream and sugar in that cup.
Another good mystery from Julie Mulhern. This round we meet Ellison’s sister, who married into the rubber dynasty, and Aunt Sis. Family, family, and more family drama with, of course, a death and some interesting twists in Ellison’s love life. With Hunter Taft and Detective Anarchy Jones vying for Ellison’s attention, the atmosphere is bound to get a little heated. I highly recommend the audio version of this series as the narrator does good job relaying the story to the reader.

In this the third installment of the Country Club Mysteries we find Ellison and her friends and family embroiled in a few mysteries. The story held up well and there were great resolutions to all the side stories and the main mystery. Almost a perfect book. Great editing. Great character development good story. I can't wait for story 4.
