I liked the forensic handwriting aspect of this cozy. A bit too much about the love life of the protagonist but that seems to be the norm these days... I did manage to figure out who the culprit was about three-quarters of the way through but the true motive escaped me completely.

Poison Pen: A
Forensic Handwriting Mystery
By Sheila Lowe
Obsidian
300 Pages

Are you a "forensic" fan like I am? Well, then you definitely will enjoy the debut of Sheila Lowe's new forensic handwriting mystery series, starting with Poison Pen.

Through a bit of serendipity, I had the opportunity to read both Poison Pen and the follow-up book, Written in Blood this past weekend--what an enjoyable opportunity!

Claudia Rose, our forensic expert, was pulled into action when her former college friend was found dead in her hot tub, seemingly as a suicide. Only her alleged note,

IT WAS FUN WHILE IT LASTED

did not match the personality of Lindsey Alexander. Indeed, most people who knew her would not be surprised if she were murdered--their surprise was that she had supposedly committed suicide!

There was only one man who seemed to mourn Lindsey's death--Ivan, her business associate, friend and executor of her will. From the personal side, Ivan was sure that Lindsey had not committed suicide; from a business side, the insurance company refused to pay on a suicide. There was no choice; Ivan had to convince Claudia that she must help him prove whether the suicide note was authentic.

Claudia, as well Kelly, her best friend, had been "burned" once too often by Lindsey and couldn't even pretend to know why they had attended her funeral. But with Ivan's pleas, Claudia forced her memories back to college days when she and Lindsey were still friends and agreed. The one thing she required, however, was hard to find--she needed samples of Lindsey's handwriting in block printing, as the suicide note had been created.

Ivan pointed out that this was a very important reason to assume that the note had been faked--Lindsey always wrote in cursive; in fact, trying to find similar documents forced further and further involvement as Claudia worked with Ivan to find needed evidence. That is, until Ivan was murdered!

And when Kelly admitted that she was afraid she "might" have killed Lindsey, while she has also discovered that another good friend, Zeb, had written Lindsey a threatening letter, Claudia is pulled in well beyond her original task of authenticating writing. On the other hand, working with Detective Joel Jovanic and finding a mutual attraction developing between them, placed her in a difficult spot where loyalty to her two friends forced her to make difficult choices. Especially when Claudia finds she could very well be the next victim!

This is a whodunit that will wrap you tight--into trying to solve the mystery along with Claudia. Even though I was narrowing down my own suspects, I wasn't quite sure what had happened until the very end--after all, among many others, there was the senator who had been blackmailed by Lindsey, or her brother who had once been Lindsey's partner in her schemes!

Poison Pen is a page-turner that will keep you reading! Enjoy!

And, now...I'm on to reading Written in Blood!

Book 1, in the Forensic Handwriting Mystery

Mystery novels have always been at the heart of my reading and of course my preferred chose. It is very refreshing when one comes along with a new storyline and definitely having a forensic handwriting analyst teaming up with a detective should do the trick. What makes this novel interesting above all is that the author, an expert in the field has skillfully injected into her plot fascinating information about the intricacies of graphology.

This crisp and gritty novel is a well- written story populated with many intriguing and richly drawn characters. The protagonist, Claudia Rose is an intelligent, resourceful and above all independent person who often assists the police in analyzing and identifying the writer and his/ hers psychological state at the time of writing. The story is slow going at first but once it bursts into life and gets its going beat we are into a plot filled with action admirably paced. For excitement, a few twists throw curves to derail us, some include blackmail, violence and all that good stuff needed to make a mystery a very suspenseful one. This turn out to be quite a page-turner with some graphic scenes, it may be a little salty at time for some but if you are not into murder mystery this whodunit may not be for you.

I surely enjoyed following Claudia and trying to solve the mystery along with her.

3.5 stars, rounded up

I’m trying to squeeze another book or two out of my KU trial subscription before it ends this week, and this one was already on my to-read list, so it was a no-brainer.

In elementary school, handwriting was my nemesis – it was the only C on my report card, and it prevented me from getting a free meal at McDonald’s. I vowed it would never happen again and it didn’t :) Ever since, handwriting, and in particular handwriting analysis, has fascinated me, so I was very intrigued by the idea of using handwriting analysis to help solve crimes.

I like Claudia, the MC, and her friends, but I rolled my eyes at the insta-love between her and the detective on the case. Another irritation was the way he was so quick to involve her in the investigation, sharing details of the case that should have been withheld. The Hollywood setting was different from most cozy mysteries, but it was full of rich, famous and snobby characters, which made it hard to like many of them.

The murder victim was not very popular among her peers, and as the book progressed, it was easy to see why. There were plenty of suspects, all with essentially the same motive, but I moved one person to the top of my list relatively early in the book and was actually right for a change. The confrontation scene was predictable, but I like the way it was resolved.

I will probably read the next book before deciding whether to continue the series or drop it, but won’t be in any hurry to do so.

Review of eBook

Claudia Rose, Kelly Brennan, and Lindsey Alexander shared a sort of love/hate relationship, based primarily on Lindsey’s propensity for mean-spiritedness. But their iffy relationship doesn’t stop them from questioning why Lindsey would commit suicide.

Lindsey managed to set up and run, with her partner, Ivan Novak, a business representing an A-list clientele. Ivan, her friend, her business associate. The one who is certain that Lindsey did not kill herself.

Ivan convinces Claudia to look into the matter; leaving Claudia to gather samples of Lindsey’s handwriting to compare with the suicide note. Ivan had several reasons for believing the suicide note was not genuine; Claudia recognized several of his reasons as facts she knew about Lindsey as well.

But as Claudia tries to find answers . . . often clashing with Los Angeles Police Detective Joel Jovanic . . . she becomes the target of break-ins and attacks. And Ivan is murdered.

Was Lindsey a suicide or was her untimely death an accident? Why was Ivan murdered? Could Lindsey's death be murder as well?

Will Claudia find the answers or will she become the next victim?

=========

First in a new series, this compulsive tale of secrets, lies, and murder pulls the reader into the telling of the tale from the outset. With well-defined characters, a captivating plot, and the relentless pace of the investigation, the narrative keeps the suspense building and the tension high as the unfolding story takes some surprising twists and turns on its way to a satisfactory denouement.

Claudia’s work as a forensic handwriting examiner gives a unique aspect to the intense, gritty whodunit that draws readers in and keeps those pages turning.

Highly recommended.

I love crime thrillers, mysteries and forensics fiction as long as the main focus is on the story and doesn't get too bogged down in the minutiae of the forensics. Thankfully this book gets the balance dead right with a good helping of interesting details about the art of forensic handwriting analysis, good character presentation and development and a great plot.

The narration was excellent and made the audiobook a pleasure to listen to.

One error that really caught my ear though was at the funeral when Claudia was wondering where her friend Kelly was. "As if she had heard Claudia's mental summons Claudia appeared at her side..." when obviously it was Kelly who appeared. Apart from that little "ooops!" though it was all good.

I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to listening to the next in the series.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Sheila Lowe is a new author for me. She was kind enough to send me a free download of this book so I could have a chance to read her books. I enjoyed the book and the banter between Det. Joel Jovanitic and Claudia Rose. Although the story wasn't exactly what I was expecting it was a quick read and suspenseful at times. Sometimes I felt there was more emphasis on the relationship between the main characters rather than the murders under investigation. This is the 1st book in the Claudia Rose series and I highly suggest you read the book and make your own assumptions.

This was completely different to what I am used to in respect of the plot device - analysing hand writing (have no idea what they would think of my mess).

It was really interesting and as the story developed it became more and more intriguing and I needed to finish.

I did struggle a bit with the narration to start off with but it worked and all in all really enjoyed it.

I was given a free copy by the author but the review is entirely my own.

A little grittier than I normally read, but this was a fun change of pace. I've been meaning to read this series for a while, since handwriting analysis fascinates me, and I'm glad I finally got the chance. Nearly impossible to put down with so many twists and turns. Excited to read the next book in the series.

POISON PEN held a hypnotic grip on me from the very first page. The plotline showcases the cleverness and precision timing of Lowe's riveting storytelling. Pair that with her addictive and unforgettably vivid cast of characters, and you've got a five-star winner!

Poison Pen, by Sheila Lowe, is the first mystery in the Forensic Handwriting series with a gripping plot and intriguing characters. Lowe capitalizes on her expertise in handwriting analysis, by bringing readers a tenacious main character, Claudia Rose. After Claudia is hired to analyze a suicide note, she becomes embroiled in the investigation, withholding evidence and putting her life in danger. But who can blame her? One victim is part of her past; the other is a client. This novel radiates more heat than the California sun once bribery and celebrity scandals surface, and sparks fly between Claudia and the detective she deceives. Difficult to set aside, Lowe’s style is flavorful and builds intensity throughout the novel. The provocative subject matter kept me tuned in and guessing until the very end.

More like a 3.5 - Read for #Book1CoziesClub

Only a cozy in regards to the fact that we're dealing with an amateur sleuth. That being said, I did find this one interesting and will be continuing to the next installment. Check out my Series First Impressions video on this selection for more of my non-spoilery thoughts.

The apparent suicide of a friend draws Claudia Rose, a forensic handwriting expert, into a web of blackmail, lies and murder that almost kills her.

The plot was interesting and the characters engaging. Claudia is a realistic character displaying the doubts and fears any normal person would in the same circumstances. But despite these doubts and fears, Claudia perseveres; determined to uncover the truth behind her friend’s death.

Lowe did a good job of bringing the killer on-stage early in the book yet making it appear that any one of a dozen characters could have been the guilty party. Sadly, Lowe fell back on ‘the killer tells the main character all’ ploy to reveal the true guilty party.

This book had more typographic errors – including plenty of missed and wrong words – than any other book I’ve ever downloaded.

That gripe aside, I enjoyed this book and want to read more in the series.

Dear oh dear.........another free one that sounded good (as did another by her I downloaded) and marred by a lack of editing/proofreading. And to be honest, if she can't be bothered then neither can I.
I got to 17% with this little gem and packed it in-"Zebediahnodded."TheSommerfieldsemployedEarlasachauffeur." I mean, for real ? And NOBODY spotted this when editing ??
There seemed to an issue all the way through with spacing, or lack thereof-we had upwith and wellhave. Then one was used where on was meant, speechmarks got dropped and I 'd seen enough.
It was nice we had an older protagonist for a change and I really liked the idea behind this set of books but I just won't waste time trying to figure out what an author means and having to do so because it's published in the state it's in.

Frankly speaking , I Picked up this book with an impression, that there would be some learning along about handwriting analysis and enjoying a good mystery.

The Author did drop some of the features, but this book entirely does not categorises under "Handwriting Forensic"

Anyway, it was not entirely a waste of Time. Can be read once. You cannot expect a Master Story from this one.

There are five more in the series and I still do intend to pick the rest one by one as and when my mood permits.

You won't miss anything though , if you skip this one and you won't be entirely disappointed too if you read this one, without having pre-notion about the Subject that the book promises.

A cozy mystery after a long time. Thoroughly enjoyed this one, and lapped in the details about handwriting analysis. This one starts with the death of an influential Hollywood promotional lady who's found drowned in an inebriated state in her bath tub. initially deemed a suicide, other deaths follow and secrets of the rich and influential are exposed. The detecting team here is a handwriting expert, a former friend of the dead lady, and a charismatic police detective. The end was satisfactory.

This is the first in a series written by Sheila Lowe. I usually read strictly cozy mysteries which this is not. But it was so good, so page turningly good I couldn't put it down. I love the main character Claudia who is a hand writing analyzer expert. I found this concept so fascinating. Add in a murder, a list of whose who suspects and Jovanic the detective on the case and you are reading a thriller of a story.
I am definitely ready to dive into the next book in the series. Thanks Sheila for a most entertaining book.

I enjoyed this -- sympathetic and interesting characters; fast-paced plot that unrolls neatly, with surprises that keep coming; and I always enjoy books set in my part of L.A.

But I'm unlikely to pick up the next book in the series. Not unless it ends up being another free ebook. Too much depended on the hocus-pocus of handwriting analysis, which I found annoying.

This is the first book in the Forensic Handwriting Mystery series featuring Claudia Rose. Claudia is asked to look at a suicide note and determine if it was written by the deceased. While trying to do her job Claudia is attacked several times. She also learns the case involves power & sex which are prime motives for murder.

Ok story, not great book

So while the story was okay and a little formulaic, the number of typos was astounding. I lost count after finding over 6 in the first third of the book. I finished reading it just to see if the errors continued and they did. Since the book was free, I was glad I didn't pay for it. Won't likely read this author again.

Interesting book and I loved the premise, but I had a terrible time finishing this one. I'm going to give her next book a try because I liked the main characters but could build absolutely no empathy with the victim. Made it hard to care "who dunnit".

When you consider that this is Ms. Lowe's first foray into fiction, it really is amazing. I fell in love her protagonist right away and with the added interest of handwriting analysis, the series is one I'm looking forward to continuing.
