I still remember reading my first novel by Kristen Heitzmann. It came about thanks to the INSPY Awards and the specific book was The Breath of Dawn. Needless to say and without getting into detail, I was wonderstruck by it. That was three years ago and since then, there has been nothing new from this talented author. Until now. Now, Kristen Heitzmann is revisiting the title of author in a big way: she has joined the ranks of Indie authors. Her first Indie book just released and is as delightful as one would expect.
The story chronicles best-selling author Grace Evangeline. Her path crosses with playwright Devin Bressard, a man who believes Grace’s novels are anything but worth their status. This immediately pits the pair as kind of enemies which is inconvenient since Grace and Devin must write a play together. As tensions mount between this unlikely pair, their passion leads to life-changing events. Whether they like it or not, their hearts may never be the same.
Told You So, by Kristen Heitzmann | Book Review
Told You So is certainly its own story however the one thing that did flitter across my mind while reading through its quick-witted barbs were reflections of Darcy and Elizabeth. The story is completely different, but the structure of the lead characters is very reminiscent of the fan favorite and iconic literary couple. Grace and Devin's bickering is beyond brilliant and composed. Words fail to describe my feelings of this. Kristen knows all of the right bits of dialogue to craft so that the entire novel really feels like one marathon string of witty dialogue montages and it really reads like that as well. This book was so impressive and entertaining, but there's also an elegant prose with an equally sophisticated plot that exceeds expectations of this novel.
The shift that happens at approximately the halfway point left me stunned. Not in a bad way, rather in an unexpected-plot-twist kind of way. Where the book leads is a bend that completely shifts the otherwise clever albeit humorous attitude the novel adopts. Not to be slighted, the characters are also more than just the exquisite wit. Kristen places a depth to these characters that too frequently is missing from the lines of romantic-comedy. Grace isn’t the average “pretty face” her made up persona would suggest and Devin, well, he’s not the man your first impression might draw of him.
If you liked Kristen’s prior novels, be sure you pick up a copy of Told You So. It’s a grown-up kind of romance and the author pushes limits further than she’d would in traditional publishing. The balance in the give-and-take and knowing where to pause is good as is the sense of complexity the book puts out. Much as I enjoyed reading my Kindle copy, this is one book I will be adding in paperback to my bookshelf because it effortlessly earned its place among my favorites.
This is one book I heartily anticipate re-reading because it’s one novel that – I believe, will only grow more and more engaging as I’ve a feeling I missed some of the cleverness. Simply put, with this sort of novel, a reread is bound to allow a reader to catch missing nuances.

Ms. Heitzmann's way of writing, oh my, the way she uses words is nothing short of stunning. Intelligent and funny are a wonderful combination, plus it's an art to create the whole story greatly through dialog. If I could write this review on the author's ability to write it would be five stars. But the content holds me back.
I seldom rant much anymore, but this one? No, I couldn't stop myself. I hid most of it for the sake of those who want to read it.

It was a pleasure to add my review to the masses. Told You SO was my first Kristen Heitzmann book and it was a fantastic introduction. And even though my stomach clenched for 3 hours from the tension (and still hasn't released), I would happily pick up another by this author. It's edgy, make NO mistake - but it deals with authentic questions, answers, and life. We all need a Rescuer...even when we're not looking for one :-) Thanks Kristen, for this story! (Did I say that the ROMANCE is SUPERB!!! Dark chocolate, people!)

Grace Evangeline, successful romance novelist, has decided the next goal of her career. She wants her newest novel produced for the stage, and she wants Devin Bressard, also a playwright, to be the producer. In fact, she won't consider anyone else. When he pans her work to her face, she douses his (face, not work) with her glass of sweet tea, but she doesn't give up. She's going to prove him wrong not only about her novels, but also about the nature of art itself. Drama in real life does happen, and dramatic art fortifies the soul to face its own trials, and Grace is going to prove this to Devin if she has to stalk him to do it. Fortunately for characters and reader alike, Grace is a naive and inept stalker, and Devin quickly finds her out. When they are compelled to work together on a new project, their polarized points of view result in a battle of wits and wills and ignite a passion between them they never expected or wanted, but that just might begin healing they both need.
I entered this book with excitement because I've been a fan of Heitzmann for almost ten years and have read most of her novels. But I also knew this is classed as a romcom, and I avoid comedies (and this author is the only exception I can think of to my avoidance of romances). I expected to enjoy it but hoped the humor would work for me. Well, by the end of the first chapter, I felt the magic. I was grinning as I flipped pages, often laughing out loud, devouring the brilliant banter between Grace and Devin. The book is probably 70% dialogue, but it never feels like "too much talking." These are voices you can hear in your head and characters you want to have coffee with (even Devin, even if he calls my writing less than art). I was settled into the comic groove of the book and perfectly happy with it despite my usual genre preferences. However, there were hints: all is not as light as it seems. Devin's cynicism and Grace's resolution against it are more than comic vehicles. Life has happened to these two people--life has hurt them, and they have each adopted a defense that suits them.
And yes. Around the halfway mark, the passion between them creates consequences neither of them are prepared for. They don't know what to do, and since they're broken people, they do the wrong things. They grab their shields and huddle behind them, stumble away from each other at least as messed up as they were when they met.
Here's the beautiful thing, though: the story's only half done. By the end, what began as a battle of wits and wills becomes ... well, it's a romance, so I'm sure you can guess. But while certain pieces of the story are dictated by the genre, the journey that brings us there is overall a fresh one. I could have done with fewer tied bows at the end, and at worst, one could accuse the book of a tonal shift at the halfway point that some readers might not be on board with. But if you go in looking for clues to the human undercurrents in the hilarity, you will find them, and you'll anticipate discovering the pasts that made Devin and Grace who they are. This book takes a look at defense mechanisms and how they affect our perception of the world around us--people, events, and yes, art. Devin and Grace's quarrels about art's purpose in life are some of the shiniest gems of the book.
The dialogue sparks and sparkles and delves deep. The characters make me worry and cheer. I'm looking forward to meeting Grace and Devin again in the sequel TOLD YOU TWICE, as well as getting inside the head of secondary character Bo Corrigan. TOLD YOU SO proves Kristen Heitzmann can write anything and do it right.

This novel is not emblematic of KH's typical narrative skill. I have greatly enjoyed her previous stories, but this one is filled with contrived, over-the-top plot twists and dull (forced) chemistry between characters. The meta-novel frame for this story works against the tale rather than with it. The characters are cardboard flat. However, it is a testament to the author's natural writing skill that I kept reading. Although the novel lacks depth, it is not boring--just annoying. If you want extremely light chick-lit., this is not a complete waste of $4.99. But it is clear why the price is that low.

I made the choice between four and five stars when I woke up this morning and Told You So was still on my mind.
Kristen Heitzmann's first independent release teems with the sparkling writing and plot twists her fans know to expect. And new readers, come prepared. This story, funny and dramatic and poignant as it is, comes with a dark edge or three.
In spite of larger-than-life characters and high-wire situations that most of us will never face, the depths this novel plumbs are very real. Just as heroine Grace Evangeline's sweet & sassy romances carry messages of hope that Devin Bressard's brooding plays never could, Told You So finds the jagged edge necessary to speak to a certain kind of brokenness. Going much deeper than a simple "opposites attract" love story, it invites consideration that true and resonate art may sometimes require more than a single approach, and that in the synergy of such art, and of love, God's handiwork is evident.
For the sake of conservative readers, it bears mentioning that this story reaches beyond certain norms of Christian fiction.
As for me, I loved it. Told You So got some good deep belly laughs out of me, squeezed a few tears, and never skimped on the heart-clenchy and/or -melty romantic moments. The characters and the big thoughts they embodied got to me in the best way, and the story held me fast with all its riveting twists.
Also, no spoilers, but... I have a theory about one of the secondary characters. I'll be looking forward to Told You Twice to find out if I'm right...

2021 reread update: the story is as brave and riveting as ever!
This book is like nothing I’ve ever come across. Granted, every story is unique in some way, even those taking cliche plots and tweaking them to suit…. but this is something else. Maybe it’s the premise, the characters, the dramatic and out-of-left-field plot twist, or just Kristen Heitzmann in every way. It’s the perfect combination of drama and humor, with vivid characters and a hint of suspense.
The witty and layered dialogue alone is worth note. While never mediocre, the conversations between characters can go from funny to personally revealing to reminiscent in a paragraph.
The story follows realistic characters and deals with raw — sometimes painful — honesty. It explores failings and mistakes with the beauty of forgiveness.
Both Grace and Devin escape into their own worlds of writing. When thrown together, their personalities and opposite approaches tear down emotional walls each has built. They are both reluctant to reveal hurts from the past because they are scared of vulnerability (and mistakenly rely on assumptions about each other). Grace and Devin really get under your skin and into your heart.
To comment any further on how the plot moves and delves into unexpected territory for all of the characters would spoil it further! I’m going to end simply by stating it explores the idea of sacrifice and the importance of mercy. It is a beautiful example of God’s plan and purpose prevailing even amidst chaos and imperfection.
**I do want to note the content of this novel is just outside of what you might expect in the CBA market. (Think maybe PG13). It does contain a few very mild slang terms, and some suggestive content is implied. It always remains classy! I say bravo to Kristen for choosing to release it independently, because this story carries a message that needs to be heard as-is.**

This is my fourth book by this author. The first two I really liked The third wasn't a great story but I noted the writing was terrific. This book I honestly cannot find anything good to say. I read all reviews and am surprised at the reviews people will write when they like an author. Something may be unacceptable in one book but fine in another. As Christians, where is our consistency. The first two thirds of the book was poorly wriiten. Short choppy sentences and very hard to follow. The last 20% of the book was much easier to follow and flowed well.
I get the whole part of forgiving people and giving up your son for unselfish reasons.
The swearing and sexual inuendos were unacceptable in Christian Fiction.
What really bothered me was Grace slept with a man outside of marriage. This can happen to anyone. She gives into temptation. She is sorry and wishes she hadn't done it. I get that. So when she is very pregnant what does she do next? She and her publishers are ready to bring out her next project. Oh no, her fans love her, she shows God's goodness and good moral values. They don't want to risk losing the money so they all decide to deceive her fans by disguising her. WRONG MOVE AGAIN. So, the man living with her can run all her errands. Yes, she has a man living with her. Not the father of her child but a friend that needs a place to stay. Since when is this ok in Christian Fiction. Never once do the two main characters repent or ask for God's forgiveness. I could have purchased this book off of any secular shelf in a bookstore.

Wow- this book was so unexpected for me! I was completely unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster this book took me on, yet I loved it all. The beginning left me a little confused and lost at first, but I quickly got involved in the story and stayed up ALL night reading, lol. The characters were developed slowly, piece by piece, and I felt like I truly got to know them the longer the story went on. There was one "fade-to-black" scene that I wasn't too fond of, but it wasn't descriptive or detailed, which is why I kept reading. Overall it was a good read, with a sweet romance at the end of a long and hard emotional journey.

Kristen Heitzmann excels at her craft, penning romances that outshine and stand apart. Her latest release, Told You So is no exception. She took me deeper than I could ever have imagined, cutting away layer after layer until the characters were laid bare, and me right along with them. The least enjoyable of Heitzmann for me. I like how she writes , maybe some would enjoy this one. But for me I hated it. The creative process the two went through just wasn't my thug, it didn't do it for me. I didn't find any romance in this to give me butterflies or any feeling. There was a bit of intrigue enough to finish the book. But without that I would've put it down. I do look forward to more books through because I usually love this author.

I seriously do not think I have the words to describe how much I loved this book! Kristen Heitzmann has long been a favorite author of mine, reading some of her books twice. When I saw this one was coming, I was very happy to be able to read a wonderful book by her. And I was not disappointed.
Told You So is set in New York City. Devin is a play producer and Grace is a novelist. She writes books, romance books where the woman waits for marriage. She pitches one of her books to Devin, hoping he'll produce it as a play. He shrugs it off, offending her, and she throws a glass of tea in his face. Not a great start, is it?
I won't include any spoilers here and ruin it for those who haven't read the book. But this book is pure gold. Seriously. The reader is drawn in immediately and can't bear to leave the book for long. Devin and Grace are thrown together once again for an unrelated project and must be civil to each other for the sake of another.
Kristen Heitzmann has the unique ability to craft characters that seem to take up residence in a reader's heart. These characters are real, not just a character on a page. We feel their pain, disappointment, joy and heartbreak.
This is not a fluffy Christian novel. It is at times gritty, painful and dangerous. But it's real. As God is real. Things don't always happen the way we want them to, But God is never far from us, even during the bad times. His grace and mercy and love never fail.
I highly recommend this novel. I am so glad Kristen wrote this. AND...there is another coming in the series.

Devin and Grace are thrown together once again for an unrelated project and must be civil to each other for the sake of another.
Kristen Heitzmann has the unique ability to craft characters that seem to take up residence in a reader's heart. These characters are real, not just a character on a page. We feel their pain, disappointment, joy and heartbreak.
This is not a fluffy Christian novel. It is at times gritty, painful and dangerous. But it's real. As God is real. Things don't always happen the way we want them to, But God is never far from us, even during the bad times. His grace and mercy and love never fail.
I highly recommend this novel. I am so glad Kristen wrote this. AND...there is another coming in the series.

I seriously do not think I have the words to describe how much I loved this book! Kristen Heitzmann has long been a favorite author of mine, reading some of her books twice. When I saw this one was coming, I was very happy to be able to read a wonderful book by her. And I was not disappointed.
Told You So is set in New York City. Devin is a play producer and Grace is a novelist. She writes books, romance books where the woman waits for marriage. She pitches one of her books to Devin, hoping he'll produce it as a play. He shrugs it off, offending her, and she throws a glass of tea in his face. Not a great start, is it?

One word: BANTER
Told You So is full of fabulous dialogue between the main characters – Grace and Devin. Every time they share a scene, their bickering steals the show. The back and forth is an expertly choreographed dance guaranteed to ramp up the romantic tension as well as keep a smile firmly on your face. You’ll definitely want to keep a fan handy too … and some facsimile of a fainting couch too.
That’s the thing about Told You So though – it’s incredibly sexy but the kisses aren’t even really descriptive. The passion sizzles as much in what isn’t said as it does in what is. Even the bordering-on-PG13 implications (necessary to the story) are written tastefully and redemptively but in such a way that the electricity between these two characters is tangible.
Which brings me to the characters themselves.
There is more to both of them than first meets the eye. To be honest, Grace kind of annoyed me at first. She’s cute, yes, and sweet. But she’s famous and she embraces the fame. And while she has a huge heart for other people, she also seemed a little stuck on the fame at times. Once I got to know her more, though, she grew on me. Her fantastic Southern sass, her genuine love for Jesus, her already-mentioned heart for others, and her authenticity when it mattered – these all won me over to Grace’s fan club. Now, Devin? He didn’t need to grow on me. He had me solidly in his corner from the beginning, thanks to his Darcy-ish tendencies. The more I learned about him, in layers, the more I loved him. I also knew that when he fell, he would fall hard. The delight came in watching Grace work her way into his heart and then watching her soften his soul.
And that is perhaps my favorite part of Told You So – the redemptive theme that takes your breath away. It’s written as tastefully and subtly as the intimacies in the book, not something that requires you to pause the story for a sermon. But even in its subtlety, it packs an emotional wallop that will refresh your own soul if you allow it to do so.
Kristen Heitzmann’s first book in the Told You series is fun and romantic and full of grace. Not just her sassy catastrophe-prone heroine with a heart of gold and a diehard fan base. But the kind of grace that washes over you when you least expect it and most need it. The kind of grace that amazes and humbles and redeems. On top of it all, you are treated to an absolutely swoonworthy story and two characters that have enough electricity between them to power New York for at least a few days. A cast of vivid supporting characters rounds out the mix, and while a couple of the subplots seemed unnecessary to me they did add dimension and drama to the story! If you enjoy Becky Wade, Pepper Basham, and/or Victoria Bylin, you should check out Told You So.

Grace Evangeline is a young, popular, romance author who dreams of seeing one of her novels adapted for Broadway. So she meets with Devin Bressard, a successful playwright who writes literary, pessimistic plays. When he insults her writing, she throws her sweet tea in his face and vows to make his life miserable.
But then they are commissioned to write a play together, and the sparks begin to fly as they trade insults and slash with their verbal swords. Neither of them can deny the growing attraction between them, but the two could not be more different. Grace is optimistic, dresses in bright colors, wears high heels and perfume, and has a kind word for everyone. She sees herself as a positive role model for girls who dream of a princess wedding and a ‘happily ever after’ with their Mr. Right. She always seems to attract trouble, from elevators failing to stalkers. Devin, on the other hand, lives a quiet life, visits his ailing father and observes the failings of humanity from his New York apartment window. Abandoned as a baby by his mother, he is bitter against all women and sneers at the idea of true love. But when the two start to collaborate, they are both forced to expand their views, and something amazing begins to happen.
This is an awesome book. The dialogue is so witty and the characters are so well drawn that I could see and hear them in my head. I laughed and cried with Grace and Devin, as they fought their attraction and struggled through all the challenges that came their way. The setting in New York is captured perfectly, with all the things that make New York so unique and unforgettable. The story explores the themes of growing, forgiving, and learning from your past. I loved the happy ending. I can see this book becoming a play or a movie. Kristen Heitzmann has done it again, with this completely new story, Told You So. It definitely earns five stars.

It takes a lot for me to hate a book. In fact, I don't even like saying the word hate. But this book......I hated. I will never understand how it got such a good review.
The first 1/3 of the book, the writing style was horrible. I had to put more thought and energy into understanding the writing than following the story line. Heitzmann jumped around so much and was never very descriptive. I felt like I was cracking a code trying to read the book. More than once, I had to go back and reread sections trying to understand what was going on. It never really helped, but I tried.
The second thing I disliked is that I felt like this book waffled through everything. Do Grace and Devin love each other? I don't know, they kiss, and then fight, and then love each other, then don't talk to each other for 10 months. When Heitzmann revealed Grace was pregnant, it was very subtle! And the wording was horrible that I convinced myself it meant she wasn't pregnant. Don't even get me started when Devin found out it was his baby. Talk about unrealistic. But then, Heitmann couldn't decide if the book should be a romance novel or a thriller. She trys to do both, but it just makes the book seem very disjoint.
Ugh, this is what I get for randomly picking a book off the shelf.

I've read some other stuff by Heitzmann over the years and this is by far my favorite. Warning: it gets a little more energetic than most of her books. This book reminded me of You've Got Mail in the way the characters banter. There is one swear word that the male lead uses a couple of times. I honestly had to stop and review whose book I was reading. But then I decided to continue. I'm glad I did.
The story was really well played out. It deals with so many moral issues in a way that you could actually be having the conversations and not be ashamed.
It seems to be the trend over the past few years for noteworthy Christian authors to branch out and try to reach readers who wouldn't normally pick up their books. I think that's a noble endeavor. I do however think it can be done without the language and without being explicit. Heitzmann didn't write anything explicit and the language didn't really bother me. It's really very PG. I could totally hand this to a friend and they'd be cool with it. It is not, however, something I'd recommend for teens as it gets a little edgy in places.

Before I start my review, I do want to put out a warning for those who hold certain convictions regarding what they read: there is some cussing in this novel (around five words total throughout the book), as well as some drinking. The cussing is by non-Christian characters, and the drinking is done by almost everyone.
My thoughts:
I have to admit that I was put off during the first half of the book by the pretentious feel and attitudes of the two main characters. They were both bordering on unlikable to me. HOWEVER, when their histories were starting to be revealed, they became more human, more understandable--if not likable--and by the end, the story of redemption was clear in this book.
This isn't Kristen Heitzmann's usual novel, nor the way she usually goes about her character's arcs (their internal journeys), but in the end, it was good. Perhaps not my favorite book by her, but that could be because it's such a departure, style-wise, from her previous books. But I do believe it's worth it in the end.

My thoughts are all over the place with this book, so please forgive this review haha. It's enjoyable and readable, and Grace/Devin had some cute moments, but there was a lot that bothered me. I could not get a grasp on Grace or her decisions, when she was supposed to be a strong faith-based character. Everyone makes mistakes, but there was a lot of inconsistency between what she did and what she said, so I had a hard time supporting her.
I think because this is labeled Christian fiction, I went in with higher expectations, or expected to at least be uplifted, but this was just...not. I appreciate the author trying to be relevant and bring in edgy, real-life situations in order to emphasize the humanness and flaws of the characters, but if you want me on board, you gotta give me motive and flesh out the characters better so I can empathize with them. This was just a little too casual for me.

This book starts out quirky and fun, with characters you can't help but love, then ends up going deeper than you'd ever expect. Grace Evangeline is a successful romance author who dreams of taking her latest novel to the stage and Devin Bessard is just the playwright/producer she's pegged for the job. The problem is, he disdains her work - it's not "serious" enough for his artistic and brooding temperament. Sparks fly from the very beginning as they end up working together on a different project.
Sometimes books that rely on this kind of conflict can grate, but this one never does. It's compelling. And as the book wades into deeper waters, you come to appreciate and actually relate to each character's struggle with their past, their choices and with God. I finished this book both satisfied and sad. Satisfied because it was everything I'd hoped for, but sad because I hated to see it end.
I'll be anxiously awaiting the next in the series!

Witty fun, and so much more!
I have to say this is a different style of writing from what Kristen Heitzmann normally writes. However, I really, really, really enjoyed it! It was humorous, witty, had some deeper truths and was overall just a really fun read! The characters get in your head, and the pages just fly!
This is a novel about imperfect people, hope, forgiveness and grace. Also, it's about the choices that we make in life and the reasons why we do what we do. When we mess up can we rest in His grace and forgive ourselves, moving forward into His will? Do we run to Him or do we run away?
I'm excited about this new series and I am look forward to Book 2!!!

Two days after finishing this, I am still unsure how to rate it. It was filled with a quirky cast of characters. I enjoyed the interactions between the characters most of the time, however while Grace & Devin were writing the play I had trouble following some of their conservations. I did not agree with Grace's choice not to tell Devin, this really bothered me. Story included laugh out loud moments and tense moments. I hate not finishing a book, so I kept going and was very glad that I did. I liked the ending and felt that the Grace and Devin had both grown.

A wonderful story of real life - real faith - real issues. Loved the characters and their struggles. Great humor, excitement and a love story that leaves you wanting more. Which is a good thing, as there will be more! Thanks to Kristen Heitzmann for being a trailblazer for those of us who write reality fiction.

Grace is a wildly successful romance novel writer who is an advocate for virtue and purity. Devin is a literary snob who has produced a top Broadway play. Grace wants him to produce one of her novels as a Broadway play, but he laughs at her. She pours tea all over him. AND she decides to follow him to prove to him how wrong he is by pointing out all the things he is missing.
Grace unwittingly involves Eileen O'Hare, an independent producer and former stage star, and before she knows it she and Devin are collaborating on a project at Eileen's insistence. Eileen insists that Grace can impassion his cynicism and he can temper her idealism, and the resulting product will be highly successful.
As they start working together, they discover that Eileen was, in fact, right. But one fateful night changes everything. "God knew the plans he had for her, and though there was kindness and mercy, there were also consequences. She hoped she could bear it when it all came crashing down."
My favorite part of this story was the message of mercy and grace (without being preachy at all). Grace is a paragon of virtue who discovers that she is not above temptation, but more importantly she discovers that even when she has fallen, she can still shed a little light for others, and that she can be redeemed.
I loved that this story kept going deeper and we start understanding their family backgrounds and the things they've gone through that make them who they are. I had other books lined up to read next, but I am instead going on to read Book 2 of this series.

Rarely a book comes along that you feel driven to read, that doesn't leave the forefront of you mind for very long. For me, Told You So by Kristen Heitzmann was that book.
I had heard about it through an online group, it had created a bit of controversy in the group and my curiosity got the best of me and I traveled over to Amazon to read the sample chapters. The chapters hooked me to the point I bought the Kindle version.
If you have read here any length of time, you know I typically do not purchase books. I review them, publishers, publicists and authors send me books in exchange for my review. I read them, write my honest review, and that is it. Normally, I don't purchase books, and I definitely don't pay full price for them. Until last night.
I've always been a fan of Kristen Heitzmann, her books are smart, they are well written, they have a bit of humor, a bit of suspense, and a bit of romance all wound up in a lot of real life. I have yet to pick one up that I could put down for any length of time before I turned the last page. Seriously, they are that good.
In Told You So, Grace just wants her book transformed into a play, and see's Devin as the way for that to happen. Devin thinks this romance writer has no chance in ever writing something that would wind up on the theater stage. After all, Grace writes happy ending stories where the characters have morals and don't make mistakes. How she writes those stories while living in NYC, Devin just doesn't get. He view's life through steel grey colored glasses as compared to Grace's rose colored ones.
Grace Evangeline is a breath of fresh air. She is a Unicorn in a pasture full of race horses. She is special. Everyone see's it, everyone wants a bit of it to rub off on them. Ms Heitzmann writes Grace with an intelligence that makes you feel smarter just for reading her story, with openness that makes you wish she was in fact real and so approachable. You want to sit with her, have coffee with her, talk with her, shop with her, and basically just spend every waking moment with her, and she is a character in a book!
Devin Brussard is everything Grace isn't. He doesn't believe in God, but believes in himself. He moves through his life, not making any deep connections, but surface ones. Surrounded by friends, none of which know the real Devin Brussard, which is only apparent to Grace.
Some who have reviewed this book, and stated it shouldn't be considered Christian Fiction. It deals with hard issues in a well developed, well thought out, extremely well written way. I disagree with the naysayers, I think that if anything Told You So is more of a Christian Fiction book because of its theme and story.
Told You So by Kristen Heitzmann shows you that we all have flaws. We all have our weaknesses, yet God's love never waivers, or fumbles. No matter what we do, who we are, God never leaves or forsakes us. It drives home the point that while we might make mistakes, God is always with us, guiding us, but it is ultimately up to us to make the right decisions, and that good things do in fact come from poor decisions, we just have to bide our time until God reveals it to us. I can't wait to read the future books in this series.

Devin Brussard is everything Grace isn't. He doesn't believe in God, but believes in himself. He moves through his life, not making any deep connections, but surface ones. Surrounded by friends, none of which know the real Devin Brussard, which is only apparent to Grace.
Some who have reviewed this book, and stated it shouldn't be considered Christian Fiction. It deals with hard issues in a well developed, well thought out, extremely well written way. I disagree with the naysayers, I think that if anything Told You So is more of a Christian Fiction book because of its theme and story.
Told You So by Kristen Heitzmann shows you that we all have flaws. We all have our weaknesses, yet God's love never waivers, or fumbles. No matter what we do, who we are, God never leaves or forsakes us. It drives home the point that while we might make mistakes, God is always with us, guiding us, but it is ultimately up to us to make the right decisions, and that good things do in fact come from poor decisions, we just have to bide our time until God reveals it to us. I can't wait to read the future books in this series.

I grew up in a Christian home, reading lots of Christian fiction. From the first time I read one of her books, Kristen Heitzmann was a favorite. I love that her characters have grit, spark, and spunk, that they feel real and not the perfect polished characters that are found in so much Christian fiction. Where other Christian fiction authors often write books that feel forced and boring (and/or unrealistic in a variety of ways, I’m looking at you Left Behind books), Heitzmann has always written books that draw me in and capture my imagination, and Fool Me Once is no exception.
I think one of my favorite things about Fool Me Once is that after the two main characters have sex, it isn’t all cleaned up and taken care of in a nice, neat, orderly fashion. Pregnancy happens, and life happens, and it’s messy, as life and emotions often are. Grace is left to wrestle not only with her decisions of how to handle the pregnancy, but how to cope with her guilt at letting go of her values and beliefs, how to cope with what feels to her and some of her fans like a betrayal and “Was she ever legit? She preached purity and it meant so much and now she hasn’t even lived up to her own standards that she’s convinced others to live up to.” She has to figure out how to handle the disappointment of those who see her as a role model. All while dealing with the publicity and security concerns.
Why is this my favorite part? Because I have been in a similar position. I know what it’s like to be faced with pregnancy outside of marriage after talking about how important it is to remain a virgin until your wedding night. I know what that guilt feels like, I know intimately the fear of how your loved ones will react and wondering how much judgment will be heaped on your head. I know what it’s like to have to wrestle with the decisions, worries, and shame in your own head, with trying to figure out how to forgive yourself, and with wondering “Have I just screwed up the rest of my life and my baby’s life?”. I know what it’s like to be emotionally exhausted trying to come to terms with all this even while dealing with the physical exhaustion of pregnancy.
I can’t even say how much I appreciated reading Told You So and seeing a Christian book address this situation with love, compassion, grace, kindness, and understanding, without shirking away from showing the emotions of all involved and impacted, from Grace and Devin to the people they know to public individuals, rather than just resolving it all quickly and easily… and without being preachy and stiff. Because the truth is, for a lot of us, this situation is anything but easy. Not only did Heitzmann do a great job telling the story and portraying her characters as human beings dealing with life, she did so with humor woven throughout. Grace Evangeline and Devin Bressard, as well as other characters in the book, are characters I can identify with and understand. I can see myself in them in a variety of ways, and I appreciate the talent it takes to make that happen, especially in the genre of Christian fiction.

So I've heard a lot about this book, some good and some bad. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I wanted to give it a try because I adore this cover. I've read Ms. Heitzmann in the past, but that was so long ago, that this felt like a reintroduction. And I was wowed by this book!
Ms. Heitzmann weaved grace into this book so well, it was obvious why the lead character's name is Grace Evangeline. Grace showed kindness and mercy to everyone and I do mean EVERYONE! She was an enigma to those who knew her because she was so determined to be gracious to those she met. Although she did not spout Scripture to her friends and acquaintances, her actions bespoke of who her Savior is.
This book is a great example of the judgement Christians often feel when they mess up (for whatever reason). I loved that Ms. Heitzmann addressed this issue. Y'all, I seriously can't say enough good things about this book. Suffice it to say, I'll be reading the other books in this series.
