Well once again I find myself in the minority on my feelings for this book...I found this to be one of the most frustrating and unrealistic books I've read in a long time. I haven't watched a soap opera in a long time, but at times I felt I was reading one of their scripts instead of a 'darkly gripping page-turner thriller’.

The Silent Twin is book 3 in the police procedural series featuring Dectective Jennifer Knight. What sets this series apart from other procedural series is that there is an added element of the supernatural weaved into the story. This really worked for me in book 2, but I found it to be more of a distraction this time around.

Here's what I did like:
- The diary chapters that slowly revealed the horrible childhood that shaped who the antagonist became as an adult.

Here's what had me frustrated:

Time to shake this one off and move on. Not sure why I couldn't connect with this one, but plenty of others have, so by all means don't use my review as your guideline. Give it a read. If you agree with me on any of this, I'd sure like to know I'm not alone though!

I could say "this author gets better and better with each book she writes"
I could say "I look forward to each book she writes and wait in anticipation"
I could say " this is one of her best yet"

What I DO say is, YES. Yes to all three statements and more.
I enjoyed her other books and will always remember them, one is not better than the next because each are different.

Who would have known I would read something with paranormal tendencies in it, wow.

All three statements I made at the beginning of this review are true and more.
Because this is an author, not a writer, an author who can draw out a story that takes you right in between the pages, clasps you and never lets you go until you are left gasping at the very end.

I thought I knew what was what.....
I really did.
But then suddenly it change to a different direction that I never even thought about.

These twins, one of them going missing and all that it entails was just fascinating how the reading material just kept on giving and giving, it took me in directions that I was unequal to forecast at all.

Based around a family home that was being built up and renovated.

A hunt for the missing twin.
The paranormal elements.

I was enthralled throughout.

This is one of my authors that I await each book.
I am slow getting to the table with this one simply because of the heavy load of books I read, but it was well worth the wait.

Leave the best to last....right?

OMG what a fantastic edge of the seat, spine chilling story. Author Caroline Mitchell has blown me away.
This thriller was gripping, I just couldn't put it down and it kept me hooked and guessing until the last chapter. I love the way she adds an extra dimension to the story taking it away from the normal.
Joanna was so complex and compelling, I wanted to know more.
DC Jennifer Knight, a police officer that has an special ability to see and hear so much more.
This author's writing is up there with the best crime writers out there.
Can't wait to see what she has next in store for us.

This is the 3rd book in the DC Jennifer Knight series
Don't Turn Around
Time to Die
The Silent Twin

If you love a thriller but maybe looking to read something with an extra twist then I can recommend this author.

Half a pound of tupenny rice,
Half a pound of treacle.
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop! goes the weasel.

Caroline Mitchell is one hell of an author! With every book in this fantastic series her writing just goes from strength to strength and it's very obvious that Caroline is a true talented wordsmith.

This is the third exciting instalment featuring the gritty, intriguing and gifted DC Jennifer Knight, this time stepping into a slightly different role within the police force by being assigned as a Family Liaison Officer living slap bang in the middle of the grieving, angry and messed up family at Blackwater Farm.

DC Jennifer Knight is like a dog with a bone when she is on a case and this book was no exception. Every rock and stone is turned over and every person analysed, watched and assessed from all angles. Of course the advantage that she has over others in the force is her "gifting", her ability to hear, see and sense things from the "other side". I have mentioned before that I have read books where this combination of police work and psychic abilities has just failed miserably, like oil and water but not here. In my eyes Caroline Mitchell has got the blend of this just right.

Nine-year-old twins Abigail and Olivia vow never to be parted. But when Abigail goes missing from Blackwater Farm, DC Jennifer Knight must find her before it’s too late.

Twin sister Olivia has been mute since Abigail’s disappearance. But when she whispers in Jennifer’s ear, Jennifer realises it is Abigail’s voice pleading to be found.

The characters really pop in this book and I loved the fact that I felt I got to know each one, that I could enter their world. Even better, each one has elusive elements and things do not quite add up so the whole time I was second-guessing and being a bookish detective alongside Jennifer trying to find out who took Abigail and why. This is the core of the plot, with Abigail's voice touching Jennifer's heart and mind the hunt for a missing child is on. It's never boring.

Blackwater Farm is an atmospheric, dark and chilling place. There is no light in this place on many levels. Caroline's descriptions of the old farm and house creates a constant undercurrent of tension and I could feel the darkness closing in on me. There are a lot of voices wanting to be heard.

It's a race against the clock to find Abigail. Is she even still alive? Nobody knows. Her twin sister Olivia is suffering from selective mutism since Abigail vanished and will not talk to anyone. Caroline has done a splendid job with Olivia, a character I will not forget in a very long time. A child I wanted to both hug and cuddle and be afraid of at the same time. See? Edge of your seat stuff this! Ever vigilant looking out the window and beyond for her twin sister...

Throw in some great detective work, a dollop of great twists and turns, plenty of chilling moments and unusual happenings and you have a recipe for a novel that you will not be wiling to put down until you get to the very end and finally KNOW the truth. It may not be what you are expecting.

A five star read, I totally loved it as I do all the books from Caroline Mitchell. One small whinge however, DC Jennifer Knight wears her high heels a LOT in the book, now I know she liked the power feeling and height but on a muddy farm surrounded by fields and tracks I wanted to plonk her down on a hay bale and swap those silly heels for pair of funky wellies instead.

Thank you so much to Caroline and Bookouture, who happen to be my favourite Publishers for my copy of The Silent Twin to read and review.

Abigail is blond, she's beautiful, she's almost 10 years old ... and she's missing. Her twin sister, Olivia, hasn't spoken a word since she disappeared. Her mother, Joanna, is in denial .. serving coffee and cookies to all the police .. and she's wearing a smile. Nick, her father, is also a sergeant in law enforcement and he seems absolutely distraught. Fiona, the housekeeper, is the only one seemingly holding them all together.

DC Jennifer Wright is temporarily serving as a Family Liaison Officer. Her boss seems to think that Jennifer's 'gift' will be helpful to finding the missing girl.

The mother is just acting strange ... why doesn't she seem upset at her daughter's disappearance? The father is acting guilty ..of something... but he's not talking either, except to yell at the police for not finding his daughter. Is that real ..or an act?

Olivia is seems will talk to Jennifer .... Olivia and Abigail, being identical twins, also share a gift of their own and through Olivia, Jennifer can talk to Abigail. Seems like Abigail doesn't know where she is and shuts down every time Jennifer asks her who took her. Olivia is overhead telling her father ... it's okay, I won't tell.

This is the third and final of this particular series ... and easily the best of the three. Extremely well-written, the suspense is palpable, and the last 20 pages or so are breath-taking. As the present is continuing, the reader is privy to a diary of someone who knows much more than what they're telling.

The characters are well-drawn. In previous books, I had a slight problem with Jennifer's obsession with cleaning. That little problem seems to have been solved. Will, her partner, plays a very minor part this time around. The family is all creepy ... as they are supposed to be. There are also a couple of secondary characters just to keep things interesting. A really good who-dun-it with several suspects to keep the reader guessing.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / NetGalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Much to my delight I seem to be coming across a few crime/suspense reads of late with a paranormal twist ie; psychic cops and investigators etc.
Although when I first started reading this one I began to get the feeling that the paranormal bent might be a little bit too incredible for the story as outlined and I had some early reservations.
As I settled into the story though it started to feel ok and got progressively better.

This story has more than a couple of good twists to it and I spent a good deal of time trying unsuccessfully to figure out who the perpetrator was.
It wasn't until near the end that things started to fit together to complete the picture.

Olivia and Abigail are identical nine year old twins living on a large farm property in a very large old creaky house which their parents have recently purchased with the intention of renovating it.
They are outside playing hide and seek when Abigail can't be found anywhere.
In her search to find her sister, Olivia goes into the barn where her father is working and witnesses something that shocks her to the core.
She rushes from the barn in distress...

When a distressed Olivia eventually hurries inside to report her sister missing, she cannot speak and can only communicate her distress through nodding or shaking her head at her mother's questions.

So many secrets and so many implications makes this a very compelling read.

This is a very well crafted story that will keep the reader guessing till the end.
It is the third book in this Detective Jennifer Knight series but can easily be read alone.

I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this book to read before publication. I have read the previous two DC Jennifer Knight books and devoured them but for me this one was the best yet. From the very first chapter I was drawn into the eerie, atmospheric theme of the book and felt that I was actually out there looking for Abigail myself. The author creates a tense, emotional environment that will have you changing your mind almost by the minute as to who is involved in the disappearance of this little girl. I found myself totally enthralled by the family and their secrets and felt I actually knew these people. I remain convinced that they are out there somewhere right now. The writing is skilled and delivers action and emotion in perfect measure and effortlessly guides you through the story. I pretty much read this in one sitting as once I started I could not put it down. Congratulations Caroline Mitchell on writing a book that made me hold my breath throughout.

This is the third book in the Detective Jennifer Knight series by Caroline Mitchell. The previous two books in this series were of a high standard but this one in my opinion was even better.
DC Jennifer Knight is investigating a case of a missing twin who disappears leaving her sister Abigail behind. Abigail refuses to speak to anyone so Jennifer is brought in as family liaison officer as there have been unexplained things occurring within the house. Detective Jennifer Knight has had paranormal experiences previously so feels that she is better equipped than others to uncover the truth.
This fast paced novel is full of twists and turns and a large slice of suspense that will keep you wanting more and more. Another excellent novel from Caroline Mitchell who is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture for giving me a copy of the latest Caroline Mitchell book in exchange for a honest review.

Olivia & Abigail are playing hide & seek in Blackwater farm when all of a sudden Abigail disappears, her glasses are found near Blackwater farm but Abigail is nowhere to be found. DC Jennifer knight is brought in to find her but Her Mother Joanna & father Detective Nick Duncan don't make it easy for her.

While Nick is absolutely devastated Joanna doesn't show any emotion she just carries on with her day, Jennifer looks into the disappearance of Abigail & the further she digs she finds strange goings on at Blackwater farm which is quite disturbing fear grips her immediately.

The Duncan's don't have the perfect marriage it very fractured both seem to be living different lives, what we find out about Joanna is that she is hiding a secret about her childhood its written down in a diary & Nick has a secret of his own both characters are dealing with their own demons, Nick has some sort of hold on Joanna BUT WHAT IS IT?

What happens from here on in is a race to find Abigail or will Jennifer be too late.

MY THOUGHTS
This was book 3 in Detective Jennifer Knight series its very dark & creepy the characters are well written but flawed this was a crime/ paranormal thriller that had a bit of a lull in the middle then picked up the pacing was at times slow for me but still it didn't lose me.
All in all a fabulous read.
There are a lot of twists & turns in this one that threw me for 6 especially the one at the end that I didn't see coming at all my heart was pounding & I was thinking to myself it can't be, but it was it was one of those OMG moments.

TRIGGER WARNING
There is references to self harm this is not for the faint of heart so if you don't have a strong stomach don't read.
4.5 stars.

I loved The Silent Twin and I was hooked immediately. It kept me reading late into the night, and as usual, had me jumping out of my skin every time I heard a noise in our house. I’m certain Caroline’s books are the only ones I’ve read that make me feel infinitely creeped out for the duration of reading!!! This feeling increases with each book, as the DC Jennifer Knight series is going from strength to strength.
The tension in the book is palpable right from the outset all the way as it races to a gut clenching finale. I read The Silent Twin in a handful of sittings, so much happens quickly and I just couldn’t stop once I picked it up!!!
The Silent Twin is a book about a missing child, Abigail, who disappeared wile playing hide and seek with her sister on the family farm. The subsequent investigation races at breakneck speed to try and find Abigail. However, as with most families, secrets and lies threaten to derail the investigation at every opportunity.
I think Caroline Mitchell has done a superb job with this book. The characters are excellent, Joanna in particular was so well written, the plot flows brilliantly and the emotions The Silent Twin evoke are second to none. I love DC Knight as a character too, she’s a strong, intelligent woman who isn’t afraid to explore her vulnerability, especially in relation to her abilities as regards the paranormal.
The location in The Silent Twin was a superb addition to the narrative too. It provided an excellently chilling backdrop to a very tense story. It felt like the landscape was cold and unyielding, almost like the characters at times. It was perfect.

There are just too many holes in this story, so many that I wanted to discard this book around the 40% mark. The only thing that kept me going was that I had a theory, and I wanted to know if I was right or not. I was.

Other than the frustrating procedural errors/lapses,

The author seems obsessed with Detective Jennifer Knight's footwear - her 5" heels to be precise. Which she wears everywhere including the farmyard. And on the one occasion when she does have to wear Wellingtons, we hear about it! Jennifer believes, for some reason, (and I quote directly from the book, 'heels make her feel professional. They bolster her confidence, strengthening the professional image she strived hard to maintain as a woman in the police force. Without them she was the same as everyone else, fallible, emotional, and susceptible to mistakes." What are they? Magic shoes? If so, I could do with a pair. By the way fyi, Zoe, her co-worker, wears kitten heels.

This should have been a great read, and parts of it show the author has talent. However she let too many things get in the way of a great story in the writing of The Silent Twin. There are too many loose ends (Matt and Nick?), the supernatural element which largely didn't seem to ring true in this particular plot, and the Joanna/Fiona debacle. I could understand Joanna not recognising her sister if she had undergone major plastic surgery...but in these circumstances - I think not.

I could go on, but I won't. Not a book I will be recommending.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing a digital copy of The Silent Twin by Caroline Mitchell in exchange for an honest and unbiased review

Caroline Mitchell is an author I really want to like, but she hasn’t yet found her métier. With Don’t Turn Around, I was sure she was on the right route in combining knowledgeable police procedure with believable paranormal elements. But with Witness she gave us a very unpleasant naturalistic story of domestic abuse, albeit with a nice twist, that I was unable to enjoy. And I fear I found her new detective Ruby Preston, who is sort of like Jennifer Knight without her paranormal abilities, very routine, like Clark Kent when he’s not Superman. A brand spanking new paperback of no. 2 in the Jennifer Knight series, A Time to Die, has been sitting on my desk awaiting my getting round to it, but then I saw The Silent Twin as an el cheapo Kindle/Audible (I adore these because you can read them in bed & listen in the car) & snapped it up. But I was disappointed altho’ I continue to love the idea of a police officer who is a sensitive & the police Moonlight squad that specialises in paranormal crimes.

There are three principal flaws in The Silent Twin:

Anybody who knows how mystery stories are put together expects two red herrings & third time’s the charm, or rather the villain, so you can discard early suspects, especially if they come in the middle of the book. Unlike real police officers, readers always know where they are in the investigation by how many pages are left; if a villain’s nailed @ 80%, wait for an extra hidden villain. Of course, any character who seems to be hanging about in the story without enough to do is a likely real villain – this one was easy to spot.

Though there was paranormal activity in this story, it was quite unnecessary to the plot. We have a medium, a séance (with one attendee whom only Jennifer can see, guess why?), telepathy between twins (not sure whether that counts as normal or paranormal; I’d say pretty routine), but the actual crime and motives for the crime were so naturalistic that the president of your local “rationalist” association would endorse them. Ruby Preston could handle this one.

Most important tho’ is that the backstory, when we finally learn it, is both very disturbing (child pornography & sexual abuse) & involves relationships on the level of high tragedy, but the villain, the villain’s motives, & the crime never rise above the level of the squalidly iky. As the crime features a missing child, there is much pathos & that gives the story the drive it needs to get us to the finish, but just barely.

So I hope: (1) HPB will give me enough for my almost pristine copy of Time to Die to purchase a breakfast roll, (2) I stick to my resolution not to finish anything not likely to get four stars, even if there’s a little lost child, & (3) Caroline Mitchell finds a worthwhile case for the exercise of Jennifer Knight’s abilities, because I really still like both.

THE SILENT TWIN by author Caroline Mitchell is book 3 in the police procedural series featuring Detective Jennifer Knight. I have read the first two books in the series; Don’t Turn Around and Time To Die, and didn’t know how she could top these two books…but she has. This book is another winner and my favourite so far! The plot was brilliant and I didn’t want it to end. This is a well written detective story with elements of the supernatural. Normally I am not drawn to this combination, but in this case it worked well.

A simple game of Hide and Seek had devastating consequences!

Nine-year-old twins Abigail and Olivia were always together. But when Abigail goes missing from Blackwater Farm, during a game of Hide and Seek, DC Jennifer Knight is brought in as Family Liaison Officer, because of her psychic abilities, to deal with the family, and find the little girl before it’s too late.

Jennifer soon realizes she is dealing with a strange family. The mother, Joanna, an entrepreneur/home-maker, shows no sign of grief, with a smile on her face as she serves coffee and cookies to the police officers, while her husband, Nick, a police officer, is visibly shaken up. The twin, Olivia has not spoken since her sister disappeared. Fiona, the housekeeper, is the glue holding everything together.

There had been no witnesses to the disappearance. But where could Abigail be? Was she snatched for ransom? Was she still alive? But more important WHO and WHY would do such a thing?

The story is told from multiple POV’s, from Nick, Joanna, Jennifer and the captor. Early on we catch a glimpse of the captor through the chapters titled “Diary Entry”. Slowly, the author reveals more about this character, on a need-to-know-basis. I kept trying to figure out who this person was!

Jennifer believed that Abigail’s twin, Olivia, may be the key to the investigation. She was the last person to see Abigail alive. Jennifer only hopes that Olivia opens up to her.

But can Jennifer break through Olivia’s silence, in time to save her sister’s life?

I was totally gripped by this dark crime thriller, imperfect characters and a plot with constant twists and turns, which totally peaks at the end!

Many thanks to the author, Bookouture , and NetGalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Wow! Caroline Mitchell just gets better with each book. Loved this FAB story that grabs you from the first chapter and does not let go even after the last page. Once I started this, I was hooked - Caroline weaves a mesmerizing spell on the reader, so we are completely involved in the characters' lives. I was appalled at Joanna's reaction to her daughter's disappearance, and suspicious of Nick. The strength of Caroline's writing is her fast paced storytelling, and the way nothing is ever as it seems. The setting is spooky, tension and danger wafting off each page so your heartbeat is escalating as you read. Each character is hiding something, and the author deftly takes us along a rollercoaster ride where every person has an ulterior motive and peril lurks everywhere. Loved, loved, loved. I am SO looking forward to her next book.

A real page turner that makes the hair on your arms stand up. This book deals with a parents worst nightmare.

Abigail has disappeared and her twin sister as well as her parents are scared and don't know what has happened to her. The story deals with the fear of losing a child and betrayal of the worst kind

I was impressed with this third book as it deals with a lot of very spooky scenarios that is part of the farm the family bought, the author has a great ability with writing the paranormal where you can believe that almost anything is possible.

An amazing book and another top rated book by Caroline Mitchell. I received this book through netgalley for an honest review. Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this wonderful book from this series as well as the author for writing such an amazing book full of wonder and the mystical

Hauntingly beautiful...

Caroline Mitchell, author of the fantastic DC Jennifer Knight series, has once again penned a riveting, atmospheric page-turner. 'The Silent Twin' does not only 'possess' an attractive cover on the outside... what's inside is as bewitching! Though it is the third in the series, this book can be read as a standalone.

The disappearance of a child... every parent's worst nightmare.

This is the terrible reality facing Nick and Joanna. Abigail, one of their nine-year-old twin daughters vanishes into thin air while playing with her sister Olivia in a field near their farm. Olivia, has been spooked by something and hasn't uttered a word since her sister's disappearance. I don't even want to imagine myself in such a horrible situation.

"...gloom descended as she walked towards the old grey farmhouse."

DC Jennifer Knight is sent to their residence, Blackwater farm, to act as Family Liaison Officer and to investigate this disappearance. The dilapidated house is set in a remote area and a strong negative energy can be felt within its walls.

As hours turn into days, Jennifer's and the family's frustration intensifies. You can actually feel the sense of urgency and desperation consuming Jennifer and the other characters in finding Abigail before it's too late. I was so drawn in the story that I felt very anxious for news about Abigail as much as her family did. I wanted to help find this girl too, but the author held fast to the truth and left me clueless till the end. Where is Abigail? What happened to her?

"Why haven't you found me?"

In her psyche, Jennifer could pick up Abigail's desperate pleas. These gave me goosebumps and I could feel the hairs at the back of my neck stand on end.

This book is full of suspense and intrigue. All characters hide terrible secrets and act suspiciously: Radcliffe, Nick, Joanna, and even Olivia didn't convince me with her muted silence. I found myself biting my nails as page after page lies and secrets are revealed. And the past comes back with full force to haunt the family.

"It's like the house is alive..."

This book is also very atmospheric. You can almost feel the oppressive dark force that's lurking inside the house and as the wind howled outside Blackwater farm I could vividly imagine the bleak atmosphere in the surrounding fields.

Is the girl alive somewhere or has she passed on to the other side? Has someone or something hurt her or was she the victim of some terrible accident in the dangerous, wild surroundings? And what did Olivia see? Will Jennifer be able to solve this mystery by the end? And who's writing the diary?

This book kept me engrossed from the first to the last page and I couldn't read it fast enough. I really enjoyed it and I highly recommend it to all those loving a tense and compelling mystery with an unearthly twist.

With thanks to Bookouture for approving my request to read this book through NetGalley.

A special thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Caroline Mitchell delivers a chilling and gripping psychological thriller of dark secrets: THE SILENT TWIN (Detective Jennifer Knight #3)— a fast-paced emotional tale full of twists and turns, which will keep you on the edge- of- your-seat.

Set in Blackwater Farm, DC (a haunted house), we meet Abigail and Olivia- nine-year-old twins. Abigail goes missing. Joanna and Nick, parents. She was out there somewhere, lost and scared in the wilderness. If she was still alive. At just nine years old, she was blinded by bad vision, and no witnesses to her disappearance.

Missing children were not an uncommon occurrence in the UK. Over 140,000 children go missing each year.

DC Jennifer Knight made a silent promise. She is tenacious. She knows this situation does not add up. One way or another, she would bring Abigail home. Assigned as a Family Liaison Officer, she finds herself immersed in the middle of a dysfunctional family full of dark secrets at Blackwater Farm.

One weird crazy family. Joanna the mother is acting like the perfect wife. Nick, a Police Sergeant, seems genuinely concerned. Fiona, the housekeeper seems to be holding the family together.

A crumbling house creepy with darkness and spirits. An unraveling. A monster. Strangeness. Secrets. Creepy. Lies. Diary entries. Olivia is suffering from selective mutism since Abigail vanished. A race against time to find Abagail and to solve the mystery—and the dark family secrets. Fans of Mark Edwards will enjoy.

Complex. Sad. Atmospheric, gritty, and dark—an edgy gripping crime psychological thriller, cop procedural, with a supernatural twist. Looking forward to reading the previous books in the series--my first book by the author. One scary read! Would not recommend reading late at night—guaranteed no sleep. Will remind you of the movie, The Conjuring.

This is the 3rd DC Knight novel and although I enjoyed the first two, this is my favourite. I thought I had guessed the 'who' quite early on, and became more convinced I was right the more I read. Then came the twist that was brilliant. The moment when everything else that had been read before made more sense.

This is an excellently written novel. I really enjoyed the examination of the family dynamic and how their personalities struggled to cope with the situation they were dealing with. Another stand out feature of the book is the engrossing 'why' and 'where' aspects of the investigation.

I highly recommend this book and it's one of my favourite books of the year.

140.000 children go missing each year, and now Abigail will be one of them.

Abigail and Olivia are playing hide and seek, when suddenly Abigail disappears. DC Jennifer Knight is the Family Liaison Officer assigned to the case and when Abigail’s glasses are found broken and dirty everyone assumes the worse.

Joanna and Nick, the girls parents have their own anxieties, other than the possible abduction of their child and their inner turmoil is fraught with heartbreak and dark secrets. Joanna is the master of public presentation and her demeanor sometimes makes the reader wonder what kind of mother is she.

With a written diary entry enclosed, this gives insight to the perpetrator, who we find is the victim of bullying and then, tragically, abuse.

Blackwater Farm is a hive of history, it is sad, gloomy and fascinating and as with all Mitchell’s novels has a paranormal thread.

I love the paranormal aspect of this novel, and Caroline Mitchell’s expertise and experience of this topic shines through her writing. She has set the bar of this genre and stands next to no-one.

Everyone of her novels is my favourite, until I read the next one. She is one of those authors that just gets better with each publication. I actually read this in a morning and was completely glued. She has developed a style that just immerses the reader, totally absorbing and completely engaging.

Oh my god - what a rollercoaster of a ride that was! My heart is racing as I have literally just finished reading this book! Caroline Mitchell has not failed to disappoint in her 3rd in the Jennifer Knight series, a dark tale of a missing 9 year old twin, her sister left behind, a mother who is an enigma to all involved and a father with a secret.. all living in a farm with walls that hold the secrets and spirits of so much misery! I love how Jennifer's character is developing as the series continues, her relationship with Will and her position in the force - all combine to give her a real depth of character. Thank you so much to Netgalley and Bookature for the ARC in return for an honest review - hold on to your seats readers you are in for an unbelievable ride!

This is the third book in the Detective Jennifer Knight series and I must say I approached this book with caution! Why? I hear you shouting The first two books in the series Don’t Turn Around and Time To Die, I gave them a resounding 5 stars, so I was concerned that Caroline wouldn’t be able to maintain this caliber of writing (sorry Caroline for having my doubts, I promise never to doubt you again!). I’m glad to say any concerns I had were dispelled when I read the prologue, and I’m ecstatic, Caroline Mitchell has done it again and wrote another riveting book.

The Lost Twin tells the story of nine-year-old twins Abigail and Olivia who have vowed never to be parted. But when Abigail goes missing from Blackwater Farm, DC Jennifer Knight is firmly planted in the investigation as a family liaison officer, considered to be ‘psychic’, she deals with supernatural occurrences, and it soon becomes clear that there are plenty of unexplained ‘going on’s” at Blackwater Farm. There is a supernatural element to The Silent Twin, but Caroline writes with such conviction, that it makes the plot very plausible and damn right scary (at one point I had goose pimples on my goose pimples, it was that convincing!)

Jennifer’s character continues to evolve in The Silent Twin giving her real depth, I also liked the way her relationship with her work colleague Will has progressed in The Lost Twin. As the investigation intensifies to find missing Abigail, the urgency Jennifer experiences is tangible. As Jennifer experience’s “psychic” moments throughout the investigation, the darkness surrounding her is palatable, and makes for a very creepy read. The Silent Twins presents the reader with a well defined plot, and multiple threads as Jennifer tries to unravel a family’s secrets to get to the truth.

Caroline has managed to capture both the atmosphere and the setting with her descriptive writing, you can almost feel the darkness pulling you in as the plot picks up momentum. Yet again Caroline has weaved her magic spell and created another fantastic read, and dare I say it? I think it’s her best book yet. It’s dark it’s creepy and compelling, and as it reached its dramatic, jaw dropping conclusion my heart was racing (a cliché I know, but in this case true!). I just hope this isn’t the last we see of Jennifer now Caroline is going on to write a new series, if that’s the case I may have to start bombarding Caroline on Twitter with a #bringbackjennifer campaign. If you haven’t read a book by Caroline Mitchell you don’t know what you are missing, if you love a good crime thriller with plenty of suspense you may want to pop over to Amazon and buy them NOW!

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and Caroline Mitchell for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Although the third in the series of Caroline Mitchell's DC Jennifer Knight novels, this was my first venture into the series. I'll make it clear straight away that I loved this book. Perhaps my favourite read so far this year.

The story is centred around the Duncan family, husband and wife Nick and Joanna, and their twin girls Abigail and Olivia.
Recently moved to their new home, an old house and farm in need of renovation, Blackwater Farm, Abigail goes missing after an innocent game of hide and seek with her sister in one of the outhouses. Olivia returns to the house upset and not speaking a word.
DC Jennifer Knight is assigned to the case as a family liaison officer, partly due to her psychic abilities.
What follows is a fantastically told story, a story that is a race against time to find Abigail, a whodunnit story, a supernatural story and a story of deception, of mental illness, of secrets and lies. A beautifully told story, like peeling the layers of an onion, it reveals more and more about the main protagonists as you turn the pages and move from one chapter to the next.
It's a police procedural with the added sprinkling of the supernatural thrown in. It may sound an odd combination but it's a beautiful marriage in this novel, with the supernatural elements only rearing their heads occasionally but add so much to the story.

I'm not sure if it is Caroline Mitchell's writing style or the story, or a combination of both but I really loved this book from very early on into reading it. The writing style I found very comfortable and consistent throughout. Every time I picked it up for a read I was immediately back into the story and familiar with the characters. No need for a reread of the last page or two. No checking back on characters, no matter how minor they were, to remind myself who they were. It was also perfectly vivid and immediate every day I read the book.

I really did love everything about this book, as mentioned at the start probably my favourite read so far this year. I will certainly be checking out the authors other two novels in this series and look forward to what she will produce on the future.

A whole hearted recommendation from me.

I want to thank NetGalley for the chance to read this in exchange for an honest review. So if I am going to be honest, hence the honest part, I will say I struggled with rating this and was stuck between four and five stars. I actually struggled with the beginning of this book a little bit and had trouble getting into it. Why do you ask I had trouble in the beginning? This is my first Caroline Mitchell book, therefore also my first book with Jennifer Knight. I had read the synopsis and was instantly intrigued but if you walk into these novels not knowing Jennifer's background you are a little bit lost on what is going on. I eventually figured out that Jennifer and part of her team are basically detective who are also in tune with the paranormal side. This reminded me a lot of the movie The Conjuring.

So as I said, I was really intrigued with the synopsis of this book and had to get the chance to read it. For some reason books and movies involving twins such as The Shining orThe Ice Twins are creepy! Olivia and Abigail are nine-year-old twins who are thicker than thieves and two peas in a pod and all those other cliché things about twins. One day Abigail goes missing and Olivia has become mute since witnessing what happened.

After I figured out what was going on and what the background was of the main characters, I was quickly pulled into this book and reading it into the wee hours of the night. My night became even longer then because I could not sleep because this book was so creepy!

The author manages to really high in the paranormal side plus a good detective mystery. Throughout the entire book I was suspecting every single person under the sun as someone who took Abigail. You can tell a book is good when you don't suspect who it is, and this author seriously had me guessing until the last minute. Really awesome book that I recommend to anyone!

Thank you to Netgalley and the author Caroline Mitchell for this digital copy in exchange for a balanced and honest review.
Abigail is nearly 10 years old and a twin to Olivia. During a simple game of hide and seek around their home the dark and creepy Blackwater Farm Abigail vanishes leaving Olivia alone. Seemingly traumatised Olivia becomes mute and unable to communicate anything all about the disappearance.
A police search then begins to try and find Abigail and everyone is under suspicion as we meet a range of characters who could all be hiding something.
We have neighbours, a home help and the girls parents Joanna and Nick.
Joanna who is career and media obsessed and keeping up a brave face maybe too well and Nick the Father who also works for the police but has secrets of his own he wishes to remain just that through the investigation. DC Jennifer Knight is then thrown in as a liaison officer to try and use her paranormal powers due to unexplained happenings within the house.
This book pulled me in from the first page and had me gripped all the way through with diary extracts and tales of bullying abuse. The tension doesn't mount it actually soars as we follow the investigation to see if Abigail is eventually found and if so who is responsible for taking her?.
I really enjoyed this book and all the twists and turns, it's compulsive reading and I'm looking forward to reading more by this clever author.

I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Bookouture!
I was patiently waiting for DC Jennifer Knight's next adventure and, once I got my paws on the third volume, I couldn't stop reading. The parts that I loved from previous novels are there: Jennifer is still strong and very smart, her obsession with order and tragic back-story are now familiar, so you can really focus on her work. But The Silent Twin is different in that Jennifer is acting as a FLO (that's Family Liaison Officer to Yanks) in a haunted house. What could be better than DC Knight using her psychic powers in a spooky haunted house? I missed Will and her rapport with her colleagues at work, but the isolation from her team gives an extra layer of anguish. There are ghosts, a séance and a bad spirit. There are creepy twin girls and an even creepier Jack-in-the-box that will fuel my nightmares. There are tons of secrets. I figured out one of the twists, but the final resolution completely blindsided me. I can't wait for book 4 and I highly recommend this to anyone who can read.

*the silent twin* is the 3rd book of the DC Jennifer knight series. I loved the first 2 so was excited to be accepted a free copy of this book via netgally, so thank you to publisher for that!

Twin girls playing a game of hide and seek. Olivia coming running in the house, won't say a word but Nick and Joanna know Abigail is missing. The hunt for the little girl, no clues, no trace, nothing.

Black water farm is known for having a present of evils. Can walls talk? DC knight tries to interact with Olivia to talk to Abigail to try find where she is. Secrets unturned!

This book is amazing. I love the series and grown to love Jennifer knight. Love crime books but this has that little twist. Just when you think it's this person you get punched in the face! Top book and hope there is another

This was my first book by this author and I throughly enjoyed it . It has a slight paranormal twist without taking it away from the mystery .
Abigail and Olivia are 9 yr old twins playing hide and seek in their creepy , rundown farmhouse when Abigail goes missing and Olivia has turned mute following this incident .In comes DC Jennifer Knight from Family Liaisons office to find Abigail. Meanwhile the mom Joanna is acting strange and dad Nick is showing some violent tendencies .They all have secrets to hide and Jennifer Knight tries to unravel all of them . But then Abigail starts communicating through Olivia urging DC Knight to find her in time.
The author's writing keeps you on the edge and she does a great job putting all the pieces together to make it a great suspenseful end .

This was the first book by Caroline Mitchell I've read, and it won't be the last. The Silent Twin is a gripping crime story laced with a touch of the supernatural, something I've not encountered before. Well worth a read.
