Now I see why the manga has so much soul and passion in it. That's because the mangaka used to be a baseball pitcher himself.

He must also be a real fun guy since the book is super hilarious when it's not on serious situations. I think I am being a nuisance disturbing my neighbours when I laughed so loud and hard everytime I watch the anime. The manga has similar effect but not as potent as the anime since action in motion with sound effect is still best when presented on screen rather than on paper.

*Combined review of volumes 1-3*

The first three volumes of Ace of the Diamond were just as good as the beginning episodes of the anime and brought back a lot of fond memories.

Eijun Sawarmura (mc) is a passionate boy who wears his heart on his sleeves. As loud as he is, Eijun’s high energy is infectious and draws others in. You can clearly see that in his interactions with his middle school friends. He’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer (and even less about baseball in general). But Eijun has raw potential and you immediately become invested in his desire to play baseball, his growth as an athlete, and his goal to become the ace of Seido High School’s varsity baseball team.

Baseball is one of my least favorite sports. I’d rather play it than watch it. However, Ace of the Diamond is an addicting series.

Seido’s baseball team has a lot of members – its freshmen count close to 100! The team is highly competitive and a prominent program. Their practices are grueling. To get one of the 20 sought after spots you have to work your ass off and then some every day.

All of the members are talented players who live and breathe baseball. Seido’s hard work brightly shows in the practices and games you get to see so far. Those illustrations were very cool, especially of the pitchers.

The passion and work ethic are admirable and you want Seido to succeed so badly and make it to Koshien Stadium where Nationals are held. It’s a lot of strong personalities working towards the same goal.

While there are a lot of serious moments throughout the story there are plenty of funny, light-hearted moments as you get to know the other main players/characters on the team. I enjoyed volumes 1-3 and can’t wait to continue this series.

I’m a sucker for the stakes established by a high school injury that threatens to permanently end a sports career. In this case, it’s Chris, who can’t play in his third and final year of high school because of the risk of permanent injury. This captures something essential about the feeling of high school — every moment feels larger than life. What becomes unimportant in the grand scheme of things feels like the most important thing in the world. Because of this, Chris chafes against his limitations and imagines playing, assuming the risk, and exchanging a lifetime of baseball for a moment of glory that will momentarily eclipse everything.

This was a lot of fun! I appreciate that this series is making the main character work - and not just training, but also studying other players. It's nice to see. Additionally, I love that it's focusing on the blood, sweat, and tears of the third year players, like Sawamura's roommate and Chris. It's interesting to see the contrast between the first years and the third years, as well as to see the effect it has on Sawamura. In general, this series has a good balance between seriousness and humor, as well as character growth and gameplay. 4.5 stars!

Getting mad at Eijun really made him change his tune. He's finally come to understand and absorb the things that he needs to work on. Now, all that's left is working on his communication with the catcher.

Connection Eijun and Chris--Senpai mentor (Catcher) for training the real baseball.

3.5 They are so amazed by a first year striking out six batters! I can't wait for them to bat Mihashi! ...in my dreams. :'( Oh, and Major got mentioned too! I love it when non-parody manga parody other manga and it's even more special in Daiya no A because they're both about baseball. =3=

Sawamura is a complete idiot that it makes this manga so much more fun to watch. Great individual characters, eventhough I find them too amazing to believe in their existence in reality.
