Finding Evan

Rate this book
“She killed a part of me – the part which trusts when someone tells you they love you, and allows you to trust that person with your heart.”

Ness and Evan return to Leeds from Europe, and begin their new life together. But the past Evan has buried for years resurfaces and threatens their future.

After fifteen years, Evan doesn’t want any contact with the woman who abandoned him, but is unwillingly pulled into his mother’s life by Lucy.

Feeling pushed aside by Ness’s focus on her studies and new friends, Evan can’t confide in Ness about what’s happening. This return to his old behavior adds more distance to their relationship. When Ness’s new friend Ollie picks up the pieces because Evan is away, Evan’s insecurities threaten their relationship further.

Ness becomes aware of Evan’s situation, and she questions whether he will ever be able to break his ties to those dragging him down. If he can’t put himself first, and live the life he wants, she is unable to see how their relationship could work. In return, Evan struggles with Ness’s inability to get close to people, and her distance pushes him further away.

The decision about the future of the relationship is taken out of their hands - by something that could end things between Ness and Evan forever…

I had been waiting for this book release (very impatiently) since reading Because Of Lucy. I loved BOL and was hoping the intense storyline and huge amount of chemistry would continue into Finding Evan. I wasn't disappointed. The only disappointing factor was having to stop reading it to do other stuff.

It's always tricky reading a second book in any genre other than paranormal, for me. It's hard to know if the intensity and content is still going to be enough to fill another book with the same characters, or whether it's going to fizzle out and spoil the memory of the first book. This was not something I needed to worry about with Finding Evan.

The book leads straight off from the end of summer where Ness and Evan have been traveling around Europe together. Ness is now also enrolled at Uni to do medicine and straight away I can see where some problems may lie in wait for the two of them. It has quite a fast paced speed to it right from the start and I didn't find myself page skimming or getting distracted at all.

There is a couple of new characters introduced in this book which spices up the storyline and causes a few problems for Ness and Evan. One of the new characters (Ollie) is fantastic and I would of loved to know more of his story, lots of secrets and brooding sexiness. Unfortunately it wasn't his story so I'll have to just wonder about him wistfully.

Of course after reading Because Of Lucy, a key factor of the first book is Lucy herself and a big question is whether she will be another onslaught of problems in this book, answer to that question is yes, she returns with a fresh set of problems for poor Evan and Ness.

I constantly spent my time backing either Ness or Evan. One minute in his corner then swinging to hers. They both act ridiculously, then I feel sorry for them. It's like a soap opera. It's quite sad their story has come to an end, it would be interesting to see where they are in 10 years time.

Great twists and turns, and a huge shocker I didn't see coming and totally didn't start welling up at. Much. The emotion is definitely present throughout this book, I seem to find myself frustrated and sad at the slightest thing.

I still love how these books are based in England, it makes a refreshing break from all the stories I read in the gorgeous sunshine of America and English slang is always understood a lot better. :)
A fantastic read, I always feel satisfied to know I waited for a book and it lived up to my expectations.

Evan just can't catch a break!! In this book we see so much more of Evan & his daily struggle to cope with his sisters mental illness & trying to keep Ness happy at the same time, with very little thought for himself. Even though things appear to be going along ok for Ness & Evan you can see the toll life is taking on Evan. You can also see the struggle Ness has with trying to bite her tongue where Lucy is concerned because she can see the toll it is taking on Evan. Lucy just throws him curve ball after curve ball!
It takes Ness finally saying enough is enough & putting her foot down for Evan to see things need to change. Sadly Ness & Evan suffer their own life changing struggles and tragedies in this book.
Once again, Lisa has hit the nail on the head by showing how young people in this age group deal with life & the situations they often find themselves in. This was a very intense story, starting with Because of Lucy & finishing with Finding Evan, that will take you on a huge rollercoaster of emotions that will have you wanting to knock their heads together when you see them unintentionally hurting each other & wanting to go all momma bear on them & hug them when they get it right!
Again I took my time reading this one because I really didn't want to miss anything & how much more beautiful can you get than this:
'Your right, I don't want to get married. Not yet. But I do want to be your forever'..
That was just beautiful!!
Awesome job Lisa, I absolutely loved getting to know Evan & Ness & I will be keeping them on my kindle to re read whenever I need a pick me up xxxxx

Finding Evan is the sequel to Because of Lucy by the fabulous Lisa Swallow and it is recommended that you read the first book prior to this one in order to understand the backstory of the characters. Finding Evan picks up at the tail end of Evan and Ness's summer holiday together, before life gets hectic with Ness starting med school and Evan returning to his studies at Uni. Once they return from their trip, things get complicated with Ness making new (male) friends and Evan getting sucked back into family drama. Evan is extremely jealous of Ness's friendship with Ollie and it causes some rocky times for them. Add into the mix Evan's involvement once again with his sister, Lucy and the reemergence of parts of his past that he thought he left behind and you have a dynamic story.

Evan and Ness face some serious struggles and really need to fight for one another in this story. Their relationship is never simple and Swallow takes the reader on a journey that explores what happens when secrets are kept, communication is lacking and trust is questioned. Can love survive when one puts outside influences above one's own happiness? Will a life-changing event and tragedy open their eyes to what is most important in life and help them get past their relationship challenges? Swallow writes an emotionally beautiful story about first love and all of the bumps and bruises along the way to finding that desired happily ever after. This was a fabulous ending to a wonderful series!

This was a great follow up to Because of Lucy. The chemistry is still there between Evan and Ness, there are plenty of highs and lows, and the reader is absolutely along for the ride. Another great read from Lisa Swallow.

After reading the first book in this series in one day I thought for sure that I'd read this one really quickly as well but it was not the case. I found this one a bit harder to get into for some reason even though I did like it a lot. The first book was all about this newfound relationship complete with hot sex and that butterfly in the tummy feeling. This book went deeper into the relationship between them but also brought up real conflicts that kept them from really enjoying each other. This book had a lot of real life issues in that that Evan is forced to deal with and Vanessa has some herself that almost change the course of their relationship forever.

I gave the first book 5 stars because I liked the characters so much but in this book, I thought they both were idiots most of the time until the thing that reunites them. I guess that is normal when 20 year olds embark into a relationship with a lot of insecurities and doubts. Evan was really needy and insecure in this book but had he been honest about what was going on in his life, all of their fights could have been avoided. Also Vanessa gave him some crazy ultimatums and even when she learned what was going on in his life, did not handle it with the grace I thought she should if that makes sense. IF she really decided to go back into medicine Because of Lucy, to help people like her then I felt she should have been more understanding about the fact Evan always came when Lucy called. Yes, he might have been too involved but it made sense and it wasn't like he was cheating on her with some random person, he was helping out his family.

I will say this book had a bit of a plot twist in the middle regarding what almost tears them apart for good. I was not expecting it and it seemed kind of cliche that of course this would happen to them but then what happened next was a surprise. Even though it had the proper HEA ending, they still never really talked about what happened and how it will affect the future so I feel they still need to overcome their communication issues. I also doubt after all that Vanessa would have jumped back into life so fast but its a book and I am letting my own judgments not interfere with what is a solid, good read. And this book did have a lot of good sex scenes even if their relationship wasn't sunshine and rainbows all the time. :)

Letdown

Book 1 was good and I had hoped this one would be great by building on the development through book one but no. Instead, the author deliberately undid everything from book one so that she could basically take them through all the same lessons again. Several times the characters say that they have backtracked and are repeating the same mistakes so obviously the author recognized that she was just cycling through the "been there, done that" cycle. I wanted a new story, not the same one I just finished retold. Not only does it make me feel I wasted my time but it also completely destroys the ending. I don't trust the ending. They "learned from their mistakes" in book one only for life to prove to them that they had learned NOTHING after all then at the end of this book, for some reason we are supposed to believe that NOW they've learned. WHY!?!? They didn't learn crap! They didn't develop at all. If anything, they've only proven to me that They are both waaaaaay too unstable and immature to be in a relationship at all, much less with each other. There were also a lot of flaws with facts such as her being a med student her first year of college. You have to graduate pre-med before you can apply to med school, I don't care what your test scores are or who your father is. There were several other facts that were way off and did to poor research from the author. I never mind a few off the wall details but too many disrupts the believability. If I were reading a zombie book or sci fi, believability of the lack thereof would be fine, but when I'm just reading college romance, unless it just absolutely mind blowingly amazing, it's gotta believable. I wouldn't recommend this one unfortunately. Too many issues.

5 FINDING EVAN STARS (★★★★★)

*** Disclaimer: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. However, this doesn’t affect my opinion of this book and the words in this review. ***

His heart beats steadily against my cheek and I luxuriate in the fact I have a guy who loves me, tells me and shows me in a million ways.

I was already heartbroken the moment I found out there was going to be a sequel to Because of Lucy, because I loved Evan and Ness so much after reading that novel. I was so happy to see they got their happily ever after, after everything they endured. Now to see it all crumble again, broke my fragile little heart. Especially because I felt like Evan and Ness were close friends of mine, I wanted to protect them from any harm. So I was reluctant to start Finding Evan, but I’m really glad I still did.

The warmth of Ness and the softness of her skin soothes me. Our love grounds me in all that’s good in my life. Her. Us.

After a two-month-long European vacation, Evan and Ness return to the real world. They both start of with doubts and fears as to how their relationship will evolve in a new phase of both their lives. Such as, Ness starting a new study, where she will be making new friends. They’re also going to be surrounded by their old friends and probably a lot of Lucy-problems will come to play. Although it seemed like their communication system was a lot better than it was in Because of Lucy, soon the cracks are showing. The biggest difference from their time in Europe will be the distance between the two. After spending every day together that will take some adjusting to, as they live separately in Leeds. That just might be their downfall.

They slowly acclimate in Leeds, both having their first classes. Ness immediately makes friends with Jared and Ollie on the first day and Ollie seriously resembled Evan and that was a very bad thing for Evan and Ness’s relationship. Soon, the irritations and insecurities start at both sides. Evan becomes jealous of the time Ness spends at school, especially the time she spends with Ollie. But at the same time, Ness keeps Evan at arms length.

To make matters worse for Evan, Lucy intends to make his life even more terrible by locating and contacting their mother, who abandoned them years ago. Evan doesn’t know how to deal with the added problems and with the new distance between him and Ness, so he decides to keep it to himself, not knowing a way to tell her. I guess, old habits are hard to break. But with the secrets and distance, things just go from worse to worst.

“You and me are more than just you and me. We’re…we.”

I love the fact that Lisa’s books find place in England and are written in British English. I just like reading about words like ‘bloody’, such words make a lot of appearances. I also love the fact Finding Evan had short chapters, as it urges you to flip the pages even quicker. The writing from Finding Evan was similar to Because of Lucy, but it was actually even better. It was more engaging and I just thought it was beautifully written. You could almost call it prose. I wanted to highlight so much, because I loved all the passages and sentences. In Because of Lucy I already fell in love with Evan and Ness, but reading its sequel I fell in love with them even more. They surely hold a piece of my heart and I don’t mind at all. They can have it! Finding Evan also had a very satisfying end, but I also had the feeling there could be another book containing another part of Evan and Ness’s story. I had the feeling their story wasn’t really finished here.

“That’s because I’ve fallen in love with you over and over since we met, and there’s never been a single day when I haven’t thought about you. So when I look at you, I can’t hide. My heart won’t let me.”

Finding Evan is about old habits, trust and abandonment issues, and not knowing how to communicate. It’s about letting your insecurities go, not holding back and letting people in entirely. Finding Evan made me laugh, but also made me cry a couple of times. If you read Because of Lucy, you should really give its sequel a chance. Finding Evan is a beautifully written, emotional pageturner.

Finding Evan was a good read. It is the continuation of the story that started in Because of Lucy and is recommended to read that one first. Otherwise you won't have backstory on these character and it probably won't be as good of a read without that.

Finding Evan picks up after Ness and Evan return from their summer of traveling in Europe. I knew that there would be some difficulties there, some getting used to real life again, but I wasn't quite expecting everyone to revert to worse than Because of Lucy status. The first part of the story was a little frustrating. I loved the first book and was excited to read more of these characters, but they were both being really stupid at first. It was like even after spending all summer together neither of them could actually have a conversation with the other. I didn't understand and honestly wasn't sure this would be the book for me, but then once I really got into the story it changed. Ness and Evan were still a bit closed off from each other, but they felt more really and then it was great. Ness and Evan return to those characters I fell in love with in the first book.

Ness and Evan have a lot going on in this story. Things are not at all easy between them once they get back to school. Ness is very busy with her med school studies, making new friends with some of the other students, and not really having a lot of time for Evan. She still has her afraid to let people in so she keeps holding back thing which makes Evan's insecurities worse.

Evan has some family drama to deal with again, but he doesn't want to tell Ness about them. He still wants to keep those two worlds separate, but because he is not open about it with Ness it definitely causes some issues. Really both of them need to learn to be open and actually be able to talk to each other when this story starts. Evan holds back his family drama, and that coupled with Ness holding herself back from him make him very insecure. He takes that out in various ways, but man if they could just talk to each other things would be so much better. I understand as everything just comes together in a bit of a perfect storm and it just makes things difficult for these two.

This story had lots of twists and turns, things I wasn't expecting. Ness and Evan are just so great together that even when there are hard times, even when it might look like it is too difficult, even when Ness is being frustrating and wanting to make decisions for both of them, I still loved them and hoped they could figure everything out. They both have so much on their plate it makes it difficult, but they were still those wonderful people that I was rooting for whole heartedly. They are so good together and I really enjoyed reading a bit more of their story. I know they have a rough time, but such is life. It only makes you stronger and together they can make it through anything. Oh I really enjoyed Evan and Ness together. They are wonderful and really grew a lot in this story. They really started to come into their own and yeah it was a really good read. Slow start for me, but once I got into it I couldn't put it down. So if you have read book one and loved it you definitely will want to give this one a read.

What happens after happily ever after? When the reality sets in? When past comes rushing back?

Evan and Ness returns to Leeds from Europe to get on with their lives. Ness will go to med school and Evan would continue his studies. They thought they have it under control, until the reality came rushing towards them leaving them unprepared: the business and pressure of being a medical student and family drama coming from Evan’s side.

Secrets, doubts and jealousy plagued their relationship. Is their love strong enough to withstand this?

Communication, trust and honesty are vital in a relationship. Without the three of them, relationships would crumble and you are in for a really big heartbreak. Evan didn’t want to burden Ness, Ness only wanted to know what is going on with Evan. There were a whole lot of problems that they have, that most people who are in a relationship can truly relate. There was like a time when I was about to say: will this ever end? I was glad, I didn’t give up on the both of them.

I’d love to think Evan and Ness lived their HEA after I was done with the first book, reading this was a gamble for me. Nevertheless, the second book was more of reality: how can you possibly make your relationship work? Because relationship, in reality, will always be a work in progress.

Lucy is fading into the background. Mostly. I'm moving on; now I have Ness, the beautiful girl whose heart loved me at my worst, and whose arms held me at my weakest.

Finding Evan takes us further into the journey after the turbulence with Lucy settles a bit. Ness is settling in with school, making friends and studying. But Evan's deep-seated insecurities are surfacing and Ness is confused by his behavior. She suspects he is hiding secrets again but doesn't want to confront the issue because she is dealing with her own inner battles.

I want to tell her everything, but the old Evan - the one who can't talk about how he feels - has been resurrected by this bullsh*t.

She confides a lot in her friend and classmate Ollie, making the problems with Evan escalate further until things are so out of control, Ness doesn't think there is any way to save them.

Evan. Nobody knows the real Evan. I think the real Evan hasn't found himself yet. I hoped I was helping him, but he needs to help himself.

There are a lot of unexpected twists and turns that will tug at your heart-strings. All-in-all, I enjoyed both books.

The second book is somehow even better than the first, if you can imagine that.

Vanessa and Evan returned from Europe. They're blissfully happy and so in love. But the real world makes it harder. Vanessa is working on her medical degree and Evan is dealing with his sister even though he doesn't want to.

Then there's Ollie... He was the shadiest guy I ever come across in all of the books I've read. I couldn't get a grip on what he really wanted. Did he really want Vanessa or is he just playing with her head? Is he just a jealous control freak? Or really does he care about Vanessa and Evan's relationship? I'm totally lost with this guy. All through the book, I couldn't understand him until the last few chapters. It really made you think.

As for Vanessa and Evan, whew, the hurdles they have to go over to stay together. The hurdles being themselves ironically. What a book! I really enjoyed this because it seemed so unpredictable. It made me keep questioning what's going on lol. I was hoping for Vanessa and Evan to get it together... AGAIN. I can't wait for the next book which will be about Ollie. That boy is such a mystery. I would love to get to know him more.

Lisa Swallow has recently re-released this story. After re-reading it, I was still just as captivated by the characters. I was so emotionally connected and found myself being even more involved than the first time I read this!

This is the second book in the Butterfly series. Now that Evan and Ness are back from their European vacation, the reality of being back in school, dealing with Lucy and being in Med school all complicate their lives. On top of that, Evan's mother reappears in his life after abandoning him 15 years earlier, causing Evan to become distant and pushing Ness away yet again. Ness is questioning whether he will be able to break ties from his past so they can have a future together.

The characters in this book are well written and you feel the trials and tribulations they are going through. They are realistic and pull at your heart strings. This is a journey where each one must make changes for themselves before they can have the future they want. Definitely worth the read.

Do you ever want to force a couple to sit down and actually talk to each other instead of them just assuming all sorts of wild things in their own minds? It happened to me in this book...a couple who seem so perfect for each other, yet whose communication skills are woefully inadequate. It makes you wonder if they deserved all the bad luck thrown at them in this book...

Skilfully written, Ms Swallow's book takes you through the post-holiday relationship of Evan and Vanessa, now they're at university together, with new friends, family trouble and their painfully misguided attempts to protect one another by hiding things...until things inevitably blow up into even greater trouble than before.

No one said love was easy...but it sure as hell is worth it.

Oh Lordy, I was expecting a sweet follow-up to Because of Lucy...with a whole lot of Evan (one of my favourite book boyfriends) getting down and dirty ;-)

However, what Lisa Swallow has written is a heart-tuggingly honest portrayal of a relationship after the initial happy ever after ends. Arguments, jealousy and pettiness are all here, yet you will still be rooting for Ness and Evan to come out the other end together.

The British setting makes a refreshing change from many of the NA novels out there, as does the writer's refusal to conform to the standard narrative. Well done Lisa - I hope there will be more in the Butterfly Days series.

Honestly, I want more. A LOT more, but that's just because I'm not yet ready to let Evan and Ness go. I seriously loved everything about these characters from the moment I met them in Because of Lucy. My love for them continued to grow in Finding Evan. The story is a beautiful tale of love, and overcoming. If this is the way their story ends, then it was a great ending. But, if Lisa Swallow wants to give us more in the future (hint hint ;), then that will be amazing also. There was definitely enough story line left for a third book, and I would buy it the minute it was released (can't blame a girl for wishful thinking. haha) I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone I know.

Finding Evan by Lisa Swallow is a lovely follow on from book one, Because of Lucy. Not only is Finding Evan a fast-paced read, it was one I absorbed with pleasure and ease. From the onset, it held my attention.

Lisa Swallow's command of developing character and relationships is impressive. It's her ability to produce whole and three-dimensional characters that ensures this book is both a gripping and highly emotive read. I was swept away in both the drama and emotion of the characters and the situations they found themselves in.

Overall, Finding Evan is a fabulous read, and has the Bex 'n' Books seal of 'don't think, just buy'.

I give this book 4 1/2 stars. Finding Evan is a continuation from book 1 “Because of Lucy”. Ness & Evan’s story, Evan and Ness have formed a rocky relationship. From trouble with his sister Lucy, to things taken out of context. I loved both books when it comes to Ness & Evan, their love story makes you believe that there is “one love” is out there waiting for you.

One of my favorite quotes in this book is:

“Two souls but with a single thought Two hearts that beat as one”

Both books swept me away and captivated me to the point where I couldn’t put the story down!

I don't know whether I do want to read this next installment...

Yes Evan's parents shouldn't leave it all up to him to fix. But then again, what will happen to Lucy when his parents are gone? I feel a bit miffed with Ness for thinking that he should just turn his back on his family because nothings that black and white! Why can't she help him, show him he doesn't have to do it alone and help find others, professionals, that can ease the strain on him. Just because she turned her back on her parents doesn't mean he should do the same.

Maybe I will read this just to see if I'm missing something that will make Ness seem less selfish... But I will probably go into this annoyed...

Because Of Lucy was a good book. Finding Evan? Definitely better. I wasn't quite ready to let Evan and Ness go. This book is so much MORE in every sense of the word. More angst, more tender moments, more insanely intense sex, more heart-breaking plot twists. The story itself got way more intense and complicated. Many plot twists and a full range of emotions from different perspectives. Some characters aren't what they seemed to be. Basically, its difficult to put down since its very fast-paced. There are many tears, laughs and gasps in this book, guaranteed.

I received Finding Evan as a Advance Readers Copy, I really love the characters relationships and how they followed on from Because of Lucy, I also love how Lisa expanded on Evans and Ness's relationship showing the ups and downs between them, I would highly recommend this book to everyone and I would also highly recommend reading the first book in the series Because of Lucy as the 1st book lays the foundation for the second book.

The worse thing about this story was they switched the male on the cover!

This was an honest and believable love story. Anyone could have known this couple. Real, honest, heartbreaking, loving etc.

I loved Evan and Ness. I love every bit of this story including the smart decision to leave it without an epilogue! very smart.

You want a real, true emotional love story. You got it!!

I'm not really sure how I felt about this. I don't like the constant fighting over the same thing. The story was good and they both had issues. Probably more like real life than you think though.

I loved Evan and Ness. I love that this book and Because of Lucy is set not too far from me. I do believe there is more to their story, but as to whether we will get any more books in this series, is a mystery and quite frankly it was a beautiful ending to a beautiful New Adult love story.

Love

this follow up to because of Lucy is a sensational story of love and life. the story of Evan and Ness is honest .. there were a few moments where I was just as mad at Evan until you truly look at the hand h e was dealt .. thanks for another good read

I wasn't sure when I started this book. Many sequels aren't as good as the initial story. However this was even better than Because of Lucy. I loved it! Couldn't put it down and loved the drama that surrounds these two! Highly recommended!
