Marcel Möring
33 books42 followersMarcel Möring was born in 1957 in Enschede, an industrial town near the Dutch-German border, where he attended a Montessori primary school. In the late sixties his family moved north, to Assen, a small town moderately famous for its annual TT motor races. He finished secondary school and studied Dutch literature for two years, then went from one odd job to another. Since he had already decided to become a writer at the age of thirteen, he saw no point in further education. He wrote several plays in those years, producing and directing two of them, and moved to Rotterdam, the second biggest city in the Netherlands. Möring published his first novel, Mendels Erfenis, in 1990, to almost unanimous critical acclaim. His second novel, Het Grote Verlangen (The Great Longing,published in the UK by Flamingo, in the USA by HarperCollins, and in more than ten other countries) won the AKO Prize, the Dutch equivalent of the Booker Prize. Over 150,000 copies of The Great Longing have been sold in the Netherlands alone. Möring's third book was a novella: Bederf is de weg van alle vlees (Decay is the Way of All Flesh). Then came a 500 page novel: In Babylon. This book won two Golden Owls, a Flemish award for the best Dutch/ Flemish book of 1998. In Babylon was a major success in both the Netherlands (over 100.000 copies sold) and Germany and was published in the UK (Flamingo), France (Flammarion), the USA (William Morrow) and a great number of other countries. His novel, DIS, was published in 2006 and quickly became the subject of a critical debate about contemporary literature. In 2007 DIS was awarded the Bordewijk Prize for the best Dutch novel of 2006.

This was my first acquaintance with the Dutch writer Marcel Möring (° 1957), author of a meanwhile extensive oeuvre of usually very bulky and complex novels. This one also is a labyrinthine story, or rather a collection of stories, held together by a simple intrigue: 60-year-old Nathan and his 30-year-old niece Nina are trapped in a house, in a snowstorm, a house where all kinds of mysterious conditions prevail. That intrigue sounds a bit bland, and to a certain extent so it is (it is the weakest element in this novel). But in addition, Möring nicely outlines the special dynamics between the two 'survivors', he offers a cluster of connections between the relatives of the two protagonists, and a score of intriguing stories told by Nathan, who is a fairy tale writer by profession. Just to say that this novel is a rather swirling whole.
Möring mainly draws on the rich Yiddish culture, he evokes various phases of world history (we end up in the persecution of the Jews in the 17th and 20th centuries, in the development of the nuclear bomb in Los Alamos), and he walks along some philosophical and mystical paths. But the central axis around which this novel revolves is the character of Nathan and his inability to establish real relationships with others (especially women). The other storylines may be somewhat disparate and drenched in a pseudo-philosophical sauce (many reflections on time and on the 2nd law of thermodynamics), but Nathan's psychological deepening is quite worth it. In short, perhaps this is not a really successful novel, but certainly an intriguing piece of work that challenges. I think I will read more of Mörings work. (rating actually 2.5)

I sat at the table, the intoxicating smell of fresh bread around me, and listened like a child being told that there's no such thing as Sinterklaas.
There is a wandering frame and focus to In Babylon. The disillusionment detailed above is an aspect of its effect, as is entropy: the latter receives a lengthy digression. The novel is also about false starts and dead ends. Its about picking up the pieces and attempting to find order, just as one's genetic code is screaming: RUN. Nathan Hollander, author of fairy tales and owner of a dismal romance record, has inherited his uncle's house. There is but one stipulation: he must compose a biography of his Uncle. Instead, a Oulipean taxonomy of the family ensues, most of which remains unfinished, the rest misleading. It reminds one of Mulisch or Nooteboom, the national bleak stare is evident, the need to look outward from the Netherlands: a harbor, designed for commerce and cultural projection. This is an engaging modernist epic stretching from Los Alamos to Israel on the cusp of the Yom Kippur War. An added perspective is a pair of family ghosts, prowling the estate since the 17th Century. It isn't all fun, but it is interesting.

Filling a Much Needed Gap in the Market
A very odd book indeed. A sort of horror fantasy with no resolution or discernible moral. A family saga of impenetrable import. A tale of incestuous infatuation which is entirely pointless. A reader can only stand so much unstructured inconsequentiality before utter tedium establishes itself. The final deus ex machina is anything but divine and entirely insufficient to justify the previous 400 pages.

2.5 stars. The writing was great, and sometimes even the story was very good. But I found it to be a very confusing read at time. The book went back and forth in time, without much transition. It was as if the protagonist was dreaming throughout.
Nathan Hollander and his Niece Nina ( also his book agent) were driving in a snowstorm to Nathan's country house that he inherited from his Uncle Hermann. The storm was so bad that they had to leave the car, and walk the rest of the way to the house. They found that the electricity was off, and someone had barricaded the stairway with the antique furniture of the house. They knew they couldn't go back into the storm, but they could burn the furniture to keep warm to wait out the storm. Nathan gives his latest book to Nina to read, and we get snatches of this book, a history of Uncle Hermann.

ik miste wat meer drama, avontuur, gebeurtenissen. Ook neig psychologisch en onsamenhangend hoe meer het einde nadert. Alsof hij de volhouders nog meer wil afschrikken om verder te lezen.

Wat een vet boek! Druipend met overdadige ranzige klodders (in mijn uitgave ook te zien aan het omslag in frituurkleur). Möring beheerst de taal en vindt af en toe een mooi beeld maar het sprankelt nergens; alles is dik aangezet, zwaar. Een joodse familiegeschiedenis, of eigenlijk een lijn van mannelijke voorouders. Een voorvaderlijke oom en neef die regelmatig aan de hoofdpersoon verschijnen. De pas overleden mythische oom in wiens familiehuis we opgesloten zitten, en een broer die daar meer van weet. Alleen het 20 jaar jongere nichtje dat de hoofdpersoon daar verleid is geen man; zij is een 20 jaar jonger nichtje dat hem verleid. Iemand anders die geen man is is de vrouw die in de openingscene de traumatische ervaring heeft dat oom Herman sterft terwijl ze seks hebben. Dit is een 'meisje' of 'hoertje' en zijn verdwijnt na 3,5 bladzijde geruisloos tussen de regels. De hoofdpersoon is een reizende ziel en sprookjesschrijver (die bestaan niet eens!) die het leven kent. Met enige regelmaat heeft hij een passend stuk uit het Oude Testament paraat. Na 350 blz geef ik er de brui aan en verwijder deze vetvlek van mijn leesplankje.

Helaas niet uit te lezen. Nochtans heb ik flink op mijn tanden gebeten, andere interessante boeken van Möring als 'Amen', 'Louteringsberg' en vooral 'Modelvliegen' indachtig.
Möring schrijft sfeervol, rustig en genietbaar, dat staat buiten kijf.
Maar ik blijf constant buiten het verhaal staan.
De inleidende raamvertelling is veel te lang en traag van verloop. Het duurt ùùùren eer het verhaal - de familiegeschiedenis - eindelijk van start gaat.
Die heeft zeker wel mooie momenten, zoals bij het Waldorf en Statlerduo Chaim en Magnus, en zeker wanneer het personage van Zeno aan bod komt, maar dat blijft veel te onuitgewerkt, in tegenstelling tot de aandacht die er naar de protagonist Nathan gaat. Je blijft stuiten op diens afstandelijkheid. Hij is zo cynisch, moreel hol en zelfingenomen dat hij mij als lezer bij elke zin meer en meer gestolen kan worden.

Nathan Hollander, sprookjesschrijver, zit ingesneeuwd in het afgelegen huis van zijn oom met zijn nicht Nina. In het huis bevinden zich allerlei boobytraps, maar de aandacht ligt bij de familiegeschiedenis van de familie Hollander.
Door de schrijfstijl leest het verhaal erg vlot, maar ik raad aan om het boek toch in delen te lezen om het zo goed mogelijk te kunnen volgen.
Ik heb tot mijn grote spijt slechts kleine gedeelten van het boek kunnen genieten van het lezen ervan. De andere delen van het boek was ik te druk bezig om me te irriteren aan alle dingen die de schrijver er extra bijvoegde die een lezer met bijvoorbeeld weinig kennis over de tweede hoofdwet van de thermodynamica (die Möring blijkbaar erg belangrijk vindt) niet zal snappen. Ik had het geluk dit net behandeld te hebben op school, maar ik ben er vrij zeker van dat niet ieder datzelfde geluk heeft. De schrijver laat dus zien dat hij veel kennis heeft op verschillende vakgebieden en zodoende bezitten zijn personages die ook.
De verhaallijn over het huis is wel oké, ook al mis ik hier nog een deel van het doel ervan (ik weet dat Zeno de vallen geplaatst heeft, maar wat is het verdere doel? Nathan sarren? Hem ombrengen? Maar als ik er zo over nadenk kan het ook Nina zijn geweest die de boobytraps heeft geplaatst). Er zaten echter, naar mijn mening, wat onnodige en overbodige scenes in (wat had dat gedoe met Nathan en Nina te maken met het verhaal?).
De lijn die vertelde over de familie Hollander was uitermate intrigerend. Ik vind het een leuke keuze van Möring om Nathan te laten praten met de geesten van twee overleden familieleden en hun verhalen erbij waren een welkome afwisseling in de Zeno-geschiedenis.
Het einde is erg verwarrend en naar mijn idee te snel geschreven, er blijven veel vragen over. Normaal gesproken heb ik er geen problemen mee als er enkele dingen onbeantwoord blijven, maar in dit geval stoorde ik mij hier heel erg aan. Ik had het idee dat de schrijver er te gemakkelijk mee wegkwam en er zijn te weinig aanwijzingen om zelf een interpretatie van een antwoord op de vragen te maken. Het kan natuurlijk ook dat ik aanwijzingen over het hoofd zie, maar naar mijn idee is dit niet het geval.
In Babylon is zeker niet mijn favoriete boek, maar het is ook niet het slechtste boek dat ik ooit heb gelezen. Toch ben ik blij dat ik het boek geleend had van de bibliotheek en het niet zelf heb gekocht.

My second attempt at a Dutch holiday book (see Ian McEwan's Amsterdam)- this time by a Dutch author. I enjoyed the imagery and the author's turn of phrase but didn't find it particularly easy to read. This book skips between remembered events and current events with no warning - I'm a simple, straightforward soul and I find this confusing! The book ends with lots of unanswered questions - I don't like that - I like to know what's happened. At least most of the book took place in Holland!!

Moring's style is beautiful, everything about it is beautiful and the imagery is stunning. I dropped this one for now because I just couldn't get into it. I'm on page 175 and there have been "wow" moments but then those moments have quickly faded. "Babylon" hasn't grabbed me - maybe it isn't the right time so I am going to lay it on the shelf for now and maybe come back to it for another try. I gave it 2 stars because I was bored, not becuase it is a bad book.

I loved pretty much everything about this book, though the ending is somewhat unfulfilling. The style is reminiscent of Stiegg Larsson's "Dragon Tattoo" books, but no violence. The characters are fascinating, and I absolutely loved the interwoven fairy tales, as well as the unexpected tie to Los Alamos, which I felt was very well done. This is a book I will have to read again, just to make sure I catch all of the threads woven by this very talented author. Fan-freaking-tastic.

Right up to the final few pages, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was an enchanting walk through the dense, dark, and occasionally mysterious forest of a family of wanderers, with magickal realism goggles. Then, the ending happened and I was left angry at the aging protagonist, his infuriating backslide into cynicism, and the flatness of what could have been strong female characters. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I loathe a poorly-handled ending.

Heel mooi boek, maar moeilijk om samen te vatten. Een filosofische allegorie over de "wandelende jood". Over eenzaamheid en alleen zijn en het verschil daartussen. Bij dit soort boeken is het moeilijk om één cijfer te geven omdat je het boek vanuit meerdere perspectieven kunt waarderen: esthetisch, ethisch, historisch, psychologisch, literair enz. Het mooist vond ik de joodse symboliek, het minst mooi het gebrek aan een verhaal.
Ik moet meer van Marcel Möring gaan lezen, dat is zeker.

This book was difficult to read as it kept jumping through time. The narrative was hard to follow because I kept getting confused if we were in the past or present, and if we were in the past, how far back did we go. Plus, it was trashy. Incest and sexually explicit material made me literally throw away this book.

একটা পরিবার গঠনের শুরু থেকে নিঃশেষ হবার গল্পই মূলত উপন্যাসের প্লট ৷ ইহুদি হল্যান্ডার পরিবার, যারা মূলত অভিযাত্রির মতো ৷ যদিও উপন্যাসটি নাথান হল্যাল্ডার আর তার ভাইঝি নিনার মধ্যেকার কথোপকথনের মধ্যেই এগিয়েছে, সাথে বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় ইহুদিদের দেশত্যাগ এর সময়কার একটা ইহুদি পরিবার কি কি বিপর্যয় এর মধ্যে দিয়ে যায় তা একটা বিস্তারিত বর্ণনা লক্ষ্য করা যায় ৷
হল্যান্ডার পরিবার মূলত ঘড়ি নির্মাতা ৷ বইটি পড়ে শুধু একটা জিনিসই ভালো লেগেছে, ঘড়ির বিবর্তন কিভাবে হয়েছে তার বেশ্ খানিকটা আলোচনা এতে রয়েছে ৷ আর এই একটি জিনিসই উপভোগ্য ৷ বাকি প্লট আর লেখনির গতিধারা বেশ্ গোলমেলে ৷ কারণ কখন কোথায় কি হচ্ছে তা চিন্তা করার আগেই অন্য একটা কাহিনী জুড়ে দেয়া হয়েছে ৷ আর তার সাথে বইটির নামকরণ ৷ কেন যে বইটির নামকরণ 'ইন ব্যাবিলন' রাখা হয়েছে , সেটা জানলে খানিকটা শান্তি পেতাম ৷ কারণ, লাস্ট একটা সপ্তাহ এই বইটাতে ব্যয় করেছি, সে তুলনায় প্রাপ্তি আশাতীত ৷

একটা পরিবার গঠনের শুরু থেকে নিঃশেষ হবার গল্পই মূলত উপন্যাসের প্লট ৷ ইহুদি হল্যান্ডার পরিবার, যারা মূলত অভিযাত্রির মতো ৷ যদিও উপন্যাসটি নাথান হল্যাল্ডার আর তার ভাইঝি নিনার মধ্যেকার কথোপকথনের মধ্যেই এগিয়েছে, সাথে বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় ইহুদিদের দেশত্যাগ এর সময়কার একটা ইহুদি পরিবার কি কি বিপর্যয় এর মধ্যে দিয়ে যায় তা একটা বিস্তারিত বর্ণনা লক্ষ্য করা যায় ৷
হল্যান্ডার পরিবার মূলত ঘড়ি নির্মাতা ৷ বইটি পড়ে শুধু একটা জিনিসই ভালো লেগেছে, ঘড়ির বিবর্তন কিভাবে হয়েছে তার বেশ্ খানিকটা আলোচনা এতে রয়েছে ৷ আর এই একটি জিনিসই উপভোগ্য ৷ বাকি প্লট আর লেখনির গতিধারা বেশ্ গোলমেলে ৷ কারণ কখন কোথায় কি হচ্ছে তা চিন্তা করার আগেই অন্য একটা কাহিনী জুড়ে দেয়া হয়েছে ৷ আর তার সাথে বইটির নামকরণ ৷ কেন যে বইটির নামকরণ 'ইন ব্যাবিলন' রাখা হয়েছে , সেটা জানলে খানিকটা শান্তি পেতাম ৷ কারণ, লাস্ট একটা সপ্তাহ এই বইটাতে ব্যয় করেছি, সে তুলনায় প্রাপ্তি আশাতীত ৷

This book has taken over a month to finish -whilst interesting it was hard to keep track what was reality and the ground story and the imaginations of the main character. The idea that anyone can have discussions with there great great great grand fathers is a bit far fetched but it explained the background to the fact that they traveled across a continent to find more peace and the fact that the recent generation fled Europe in the late thirties to live in the US. The story jumps around and is testimony to the deep understanding that Jews have for their past and the issues that have made them travelers in a foreign land. I stuck with this to the end to find out who barricaded the upper section of the house but whilst someone was thought to have done it there was little evidence. Having ample supplies of food and drink in a unoccupied house in a severe snow storm was luck indeed even if they were cut of from all outside contact. The story jumps around and unless you appreciate the mind of the main character it can be hard to understand what is going on - however slowly much of it becomes clear once you take the historical parts as stories -it is obvious that someone who writes Fairy Stories for a living should be able to extend that talent to imaging discussions with his descendants and how they faired more than three hundred years ago.

Het eerste hoofdstuk was ontmoedigend, daarna werd het beter. Op een gegeven moment was ik echt gevangen, maar toen hij seks begon te hebben met zn nichtje was ik er weer uit. Waarom hebben alle mooie meisjes van 20-30 zin in seks met een zwijgzame 60 jaar oude man??! Vanaf daar borduurde hij vrij lang daarop door, en ik vond het jammer dat het dan ook weer zn nichtje was die gek bleek. Dat achronologische was wel best lekker, net als zijn literair verantwoorde waanbeeldcompangons en het prachtige familieverhaal.

Een dat je meeneemt de wereld over, dwars door de eeuwen heen, dat maakt het geweldig leuk om te lezen. Een element van spanning zit erin, maar je moet dit boek niet lezen als je wilt dat alles een doel heeft, daarvoor is het te langdradig. Maar als je de schrijfstijl waardeert is het hartstikke leuk om over de omzwervingen van alle hoofdpersonen te lezen.

This book was crazy strange and at first I was really enjoying it and then it just got so dang complicated going back in forth in time. And the sexual relationship between uncle and niece, holy cow. 😳 SO much could have been different and this book might have got a higher rating. The two old blokes from his past...the only good stuff!

Interessant verhaal met veel Joodse geschiedenis maar naar het einde steeds ingewikkelder door de vermenging van heden en verleden, echt en gedroomd, geloofwaardig en ongeloofwaardig. Ik las dit boek (uit een straatkastje) ná het lezen van Mordechai en het is duidelijk waar zijn grote thema’s zijn. Ik probeer er nóg een, want schrijven kan ie!

Aanvankelijk enorm gegrepen door dit boek. Het verhaal is mysterieus, sprookjesachtig en zit vol mysteriën. Het einde valt wel tegen. Veel blijft onduidelijk. Het boek is wel echt de moeite van het lezen waard.

Prachtig geschreven en spannend en ik leerde zoveel over de wereld / jodendom / mystiek etc. Maar moest die incest met een jonge nicht nu echt weer??? Mannelijke schrijvers gebruiken een boek soms om hun pedo fantasieën in uit te werken. Doe dat je meesterwerk niet aan !!!

This sometimes dark, sometimes humorous novel is alluring in the mysterious and piecemeal fashion in which it is presented. While I was initially not sure if I was going to like this novel, but the time I was about 30 pages in I knew that I would be compelled to finish it. The main characters are real with all the foibles that go along with that realism. However, the realism is blended with the inclusion of fairy tales and conversations with long-dead familly members that leaves you wondering what is real and what is fantasy and what is maybe a sign of mental illness.
I would have rated this book 5 stars, but I was left a bit mystified by the ending. (to which I will not allude directly or indirectly - you will simply have to read it yourself!)
