Real Men Wear Kilts #1

Time For A Highlander

Rate this book
Forty-five-year-old history teacher Bethany Anne Anderson wasn't supposed to die on her dream vacation to Scotland. Someone else was supposed to rescue the child from the falling druid stone. But she's perfectly fine with moving on to the hereafter. She has loved ones waiting for her. Then Tobias Morie, better known as Fate, steps in. Her intervention has changed the future. Before she can move on, she must first help him correct one of his own mistakes. That's fine until she wakes up in 1643 in the body of twenty-year-old Lady Elspeth Frasier. Worse, she's engaged to the very handsome, very young, very virile Quinton MacLeod. But that's not all Fate demands. She must give the Highland laird the heir he’d originally been denied.

Quinton MacLeod loved once. He won't do it again, even if he had time for such nonsense. With the Highland lairds divided between loyalty to their beloved country and the English king, he seeks only peace—in his keep and in his heart. But raised in England and a ward of the enemy, his beautiful new wife has strange notions of education and cleanliness that cause chaos within both. There's also the matter of her very unlady-like views on the marriage bed, which, come to think of it, he's more than happy to overlook. If only he could trust her.

I don't read too many time travel books because it's not a plot I enjoy. So it surprised me how much I loved this book.

Beth is a 45 year old on vacation in Scotland when she dies saving the life of a child. Even though she is prepared to go "on" to see her two boys who had previously died, Fate has other plans. It wasn't her turn to die, and Fate decides to send her back in time to fix another mistake he made. Beth wakes up in a much younger body and in a much older time.

This book explores the idea of second chances and living life to the fullest. I loved that the older heroine used her previous mistakes in life to make the life she was currently in better.

The Scotland storyline is covers no new ground to anyone who reads historical romance, but the epilogue was just perfection. It seriously made me want to cry.

I recommend this book for anyone who loves Scottish historical romance or time travel stories.

I liked this one but man the flashbacks of the heroine's life with her sadistic husband were just brutal, reading about how she lived for almost 20 years, the loss of her kids, it was just too much. Thankfully, she got to go back in time and discover what love was with the hero, although she fights it. I liked the happy ending she got to have.

I have no idea how to put a review for this book without spoiling it even though the synopsis pretty much did that, so I recommend you start the book without reading it.

I love the whole concept of time traveling stories but I have never tried any, so this is my first. I was hoping for a strong heroine which at times, Bethany was exactly that, but for the most part, she was a broken soul because of what had happened to her children.

Even though I loved the book, sometimes it was a bit repetitive especially in the second half of it. I understood Bethany's reasons for wanting to leave Quinton MacLeod but she wavered in making her decision so many times.

Quinton MacLeod was a sexy highlander who never got enough of his lady so you will be seeing a lot of steamy secens. I really loved how he took care of Beth in their first time which was quite surprising.

I'm not a historical reader but it is a genre that I'm dying to dive into, so I faced some difficulties in accepting some of the harshness of the characters. The ending was a surprise for me and it made me really Emotional.

Unique; different; hot!!!

review 1

The plot concept was amazing. It was very well constructed and even though everything is so far from reality, the author made it all very believable and realistic.
The creativity of this book is beyond words. Ms. Mansfield was able to offer  a twist on time travel reads, a twist on protagonist and antagonist, a play on what is evil and good. Really FANTASTIC!!!
I was never sure what would come next. Really, everything about this book was unexpected. It keep me guessing until the end in a roller coaster of emotions. So much pain and love and hope and angst and laughs.
This is a new to me author that I'm really excited to read more about. Do you know when you read something and you are sure you have to write this name because you expect amazing things yet from her? I was blown away with Ms. Mansfield creativity and writing skills.
Oh, have I mention this is really hot? Wow! Steamy scenes alert! You will need cold shower afterwards.

Review 2

Beth's ex was really over the top. I mean, he was bad, too bad! But that's me picking at small details.

You MAY buy this book because you enjoy a man in a kilt; you SHOULD buy this book because you like time travel romances; you MUST buy this book to be blown away by something you have never read before!!!

A beautifully told second chance/time travel journey. It was a love story, but more than that it was a story of a woman who was able to get a do-over on her life. There were parts of the book that didn’t flow well, and parts I had a hard time reading (her first husband was horrible) but overall reading this book made me happy.

When I first started this book, I was worried the author was giving me a tale that was a scenario I had read before, but am I glad I got past the first 2 pages. This book is wonderful..Yes the girl goes back in time but in a manner that is hysterical. I loved the humor, the action and the steamy sex. Most of all, I loved the hero and the relationship between hero and heroine. Its a story about a heroine who has been hurt by past dysfunctional personal relationships and has suffered past spousal abuse. The hero has suffered the pain of a broken heart but also the guilt of rash decisions and mistakes made by being a young man. The two of them grow to heal each other wounds and fall deeply in love. The book has action, suspense, a murder mystery, and shows us a normal family no matter what era. I really enjoyed how they both grew, I enjoyed how the author combined the modern day experiences with the past. I have not read Maxine Mansfield books before but this one created a new fan. I look forward to reading more of her books. I am so happy to have read this book and I strongly recommend it if you like historical romance with a little time travel. Its a really good book.

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review from LoP group.

This was a sweet time travel love story. I liked how the author made Beth a 45 year old divorcee who wasn't an unnatural beauty like most of the heroines are. I enjoyed how Fate came in and changed history by sending her spirit to go into Elspeths body back in 1643. I especially liked how she became lady of the castle and took over lol. I did not like Burt, he needed to get a beat down. Her memories of how her children died was very sad. I teared up at the end when Quint was waiting in heaven for Beth and she was able to change her life back in the present. What woman wouldn't want a most gorgeous highlander for her own.?

Thank you for letting me read your book:).

A very pleasant surprise with this book.
Coming after few not so satisfying books I worried that I might get an incomplete story. Well, I am happy to say I was wrong. The book was great and the love story very sweet.

Beth has lived an abusive life and since the death of her two sons an empty life. During her trip in Scotland she dies saving a child and meets Mr. Fate. Due to some cosmic mishap caused by her unscheduled death, Beth is sent back to time to right another wrong and restore the cosmic balance.

She takes over the body and life of a young woman, Elsbeth and the "only" things she has to do is get married and provide her soon-to-be husband with an heir.

Beth's new life is of a woman who holds a lot of secrets.
Faced with a new life, husband and a must have child, Beth journeys on a path that will change her and those around her. Her new husband, Quint, has no idea he just married a woman of the future and he finds himself falling with her day by day.

I so loved the humor, the action and the steamy sex. Holly hotness Quinton. Sweet, caring, endearing, possessive, strong, great character. What more could have Beth wanted from a husband, especially coming from an abusive marriage.

What I loved about the book is the relationship between Quint and Beth. Beth had a broken abusive relationship in her future past and Quint a broken heart and regrets.
The two of them grow together out of their pasts and fall deeply in love. I haven't heard of arranged happy marriages in the past history, but then again what do we really know beyond stories of few couples and not of the many? The general assumption was that most if not all unions were miserable and convenient but while reading Beth and Quint story I cannot help but wonder, what if? What if some marriages made it and what was convenient became something else?
So, Beth and Quint story gave me love, action and fun. I enjoyed how a modern day woman took to the medieval life in stride. I guess love does conquer everything, including the lack of sanitation.
I wanted a little more details of the life and maybe some changes that she made (besides more often washing) but what I got was good enough.

The only thing that I didn't like very much was the constant reminder of Beth's past life. During the wedding night of all that was really not necessary for me to read about her past first time. It took away from the beauty of the scene. While I can appreciate the way Maxine Mansfield wanted to show the difference between situations and men the only thing that was succeeded was me skipping pages.
I so did not want to read about the past for such a lengthy period.

That being said there was a huge difference between men and I adored reading about Quint. A true loving character since I cannot say how a true highlander was unless I read a historic book. The romanticized idea of a Highlander though was fulfilled buy Quint: tough on the outside and romantic at heart.

“And those times, when ye pain gets ta be ta hard ta bear, then ye can lean on me, my Beth, and I’ll share it with ye. Just promise me ye’ll stay.”

Loved it. The epilogue surprised me the most. Slightly disappointed that Beth was not reunited with Quint immediately but pleasantly surprised of the outcome.
I wish Maxine Mansfield had written more romances like this for I do not like the paranormal that much.
I highly recommend the book for the highlander romantic story lovers.

I was not prepared for the emotional journey this book was going to take me on. It was definitely unexpected and I have to say I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Not your typical romance: As any time-travelling novel worth its salt, you obviously need to stretch your imagination a bit. There's a character called "Fate" and he takes care of making sure the timey-whimey happens. It's a bit weird because in this case, the heroine "dies" in the future only to be deposited directly into the body of someone who's died in the past. It's not the first time I read *this* particular type of time-travelling device and it still makes me feel a bit weirded out, but at least it sorta works.

Romance never ages: The actual romance happens pretty much like in any other novel. Boy meets girl. Boy happens to be a hot highlander. Girl falls in love although her body's previous host meant to kill boy. Typical. In the end, it's a very smooth and loving story.

Skip or read: If you like time-travelling novels. You can read this one. It's a bit predictable, but it's thoroughly entertaining. I liked that misunderstandings were avoided (I hate these) and she is honest towards the hero, Quint. That's super positive in my book. Did he accept her explanations from the future a little too easily? Maybe. It worked for me, though. I certainly wasn't looking for any drama. The ending is actually pretty surprising and it made my heart very happy.

Things that maybe don't work so well: I do think it's predictable for most of the book, though it still keeps you hooked. Yay for that. There's a lot going on with the heroine, Beth, that you read through flashbacks and memories. The tragedy of what was Beth's life could have been handled slightly different. Trigger warning There is quite a lot of abuse, rape and gender-violence in this book. It made me incredibly sad to read what Beth went through. I don't know if it was necessary for the purposes of this particular book. Also, prepare for lots of "ye" and "nae" as the "Scottish accent" is written into the dialogue.

Verdict: If you're here for the time-travelling, the hot Highlander, the steamy romance and the happy ending, then this book has your back. If you're looking for something serious, or historically accurate (why would you, though? In a time-travelling romance novel?), then avoid.

I'm still reading but here are my thoughts so far. The first regards not acknowledging the language of the time and place. Scotland, 1645. Fate tells Beth she is on an island off the coast of Scotland. Conveniently for the author, we aren't told which coast or which island. Specific local history is simply ignored. But what of the language? In 1645 modern English was certainly not the language. Depending on where they were, Gaelic was a possibility but most likely they spoke the Scots language. It was close to English, having derived from the same root but still there were numerous differences. Think "Auld Lang Syne" in the original Scots, as an example. If they were on an island in the North East, they would have used the Doric dialect. Or, if they were in the Shetland Islands it would have been the Shaetlan dialect.

The mish-mash of dialect in the novel doesn't make sense. For example Lydia says "I was 14 and ye were 12 when I became ye father's wife". That's like saying you were 12 when I became you father's wife. People who use ye for you would say yere for your. So, ye = you and yere = your. In some places you still hear ye and yere, although ye is used for plural and you for singular. Ex: Is it just you or are ye all going? Or: it's not just you that owns it, it's all of yere's. This is very common in Newfoundland and parts of Ireland.

One way around the problem is to bestow, upon the traveler, the ability to speak and understand the language of the time. The mistake lies in completely ignoring it. Why does no one notice Beth speaks differently? She speaks modern English, has no Scots accent, yet this is never mentioned. Beth has a memory of Elspeth saying she was working on not sounding provincial. She had spent some time in a convent but I don't think that would excuse her speaking with an American, accent.

I'm just reading the 3rd chapter. We'll see how it goes.

Update:
So, it hasn't gone well. In addition to earlier comments, the writing is sometimes distracting. For example: "Beth stood before the pounded to a shine piece of metal that served as a mirror and stared." I would much prefer: "Beth stood before the polished metal and stared." People know what polished metal is and it's obviously serving as a mirror. Sometimes less is more, and doesn't insult the reader's intelligence.

There is SO much internal reminiscing and pondering, I'm skimming to the dialogue or action. Even when having her first sexual encounter with her new husband - right at the point of consumation, literally right there, we drift off for over two pages of reminiscing on her first time with her ex husband.

I'm not going to finish this one, but I'm rating it 2 stars. . One for a pretty good premise and a good start with the trip, the death and meeting Fate. Then one more for the fact that it's not easy to have the discipline to actually write a book and publish it. While the author got some things wrong, clearly she got some things right because a lot of people really like her work.

Best time travel opening EVER!

Beth travels to the past and is met with QUITE a view- I won't spoil this for other readers by revealing what it is....
Beth has had a traumatic and tragic past, and it is heart warming to see her growth of character throughout this story. There are a fair amount of "trigger" events in this story, but also some humour. I particularly enjoyed , "Verra Hungry MacLeod"
The author did a great job of reconciling events in the past and the future, something often overlooked in time travel stories. All in all, an enjoyable read.

“And those times, when ye pain gets ta be ta hard ta bear, then ye can lean on me, my Beth, and I’ll share it with ye. Just promise me ye’ll stay.” SWOON! Quinton is the perfect alpha hero! Tough as nails on the surface but a romantic at heart. Time For a Highlander by Maxine Mansfield took me on a journey through time along with Beth, and like her, I did not want to return.

A pleasant surprise.

Seriously I giggled when Beth died. Sounds harsh, right? I promise I’m not cold hearted. Fate seriously was the perfect way to start the story. I love quirky characters in books and boy did he satisfy. Although our heroine dying in chapter one was sad, her inner monologue was just so amusing. At least she died on a grand tour of Scotland.

Beth’s back story is a sad tale. I loved that she is not the typical romance heroine (in the beginning anyway). Her flashbacks really are heartbreaking and if I could reach in through the words on the page and strangle her ex husband, I would totally do it. She is a broken woman because of him and Fate (also called Tobias) gives her a chance to live again, but in a totally different body and a totally different time period. It really was a cool way to redeem oneself for sure.

Enter Mr. Alpha

Holy hotness! If you look up Alpha Hero in the dictionary, you’ll find Quinton MacLeod’s name there. I loved this man (sorry Beth) and even though it was bit heavy with the Scottish dialect, he was still endearing.

Top 5 reasons why I love him.

1. Um hello, Highlander. Tough as nails.
2. Ooey gooey soft center. Romantic, who knew?
3. He (tries) orders her around. Yeah right, pal.
4. Honor. All that Scots duty to home and family.
5. Witty. We all love a brick wall with a sense of humor.

Seriously, it ends happily, but then not really.

I am a little frustrated about the ending. Without giving too much away, I feel a little bereft. Happy for Beth, but couldn’t we get just a little more closure? All that re-writing history happens, well because she did travel back in time and changed things. So, the timeline shifts a little, but still.

Anyways, entertaining story with highs and lows. A new-to-me author that did not disappoint.

I can never get enough of historical Scotland!

I love reading historical romances. This book was mostly a historical romance with a dash of sci-fi/time travel. The time traveling is of divine intervention, rather than a magical source, so if religious themes bother you, this may not be the story for you.

Beth hasn't lived life to the fullest ever since the death of her two sons. A middle-aged divorcee with a history of abuse, she hasn't had a meaningful relationship for quite some time. But Beth finally decides to do something for herself and travels to Scotland on vacation. Little does she know, her international trip will become a time-traveling adventure.

When Fate sends her back in time, Beth finds herself in the body of a young woman and tasked with providing her soon-to-be husband with the heir he was robbed of. However, Beth's new persona is a woman with dangerous secrets.

Quint has no idea that he has just married a woman from the future. Beth looks exactly like the obnoxious woman who was his intended, yet he soon becomes suspicious of her strange behavior. Worse yet, he finds himself falling in love with the woman before him. But once he learns her many secrets, his life will never be the same.

I found this book to be quite entertaining. The story wastes no time, at all, getting straight into the action. In fact, Beth's death occurs on the first couple of pages. From there, the story unfolds to reveal tragedy, betrayal, second chances, and romance.

The pacing was adequate but Beth and Quint's thoughts on their past did happen a bit too often for my taste. I don't mind a book mentioning or explaining a character's history, but it seemed that past hurts were thought/spoke of in every chapter. I did like the relationship that developed between Beth and Quint, however. Once they were able to get away from the ghosts of their past, that is.

If you haven't read the Outlander series, this might not affect you, but I did notice a few similarities between the two: time travel theme with Scotland as the destination, stone ruins, names of people and clans, etc. There were not an alarming amount of similarities, but enough for me to take notice.

And one more glimpse of Scotland before you go...

In closing...
A story of second chances for happiness, betrayal and secrecy, love lost and gained. Four Scottish suns!

I don’t often read this genre, but this book sounded very interesting and intriguing – and it certainly didn’t disappoint! However, I must warn you there are several hot and steamy sex scenes – so if you’re not okay with that this book might not be for you.

This book has a strong plot line with plot twists and fascinating characters. I felt like I was swept away and transported to 1643!

I was very pleased with how the time travel concept was so well constructed. Sometimes time travel books seem so fake and impossible. Thankfully, this book considers the whole picture and made the story more realistic and plausible.

I liked how well the story flowed and kept at a great pace – with a huge scene happening in just the first few pages! I really enjoyed the humor and comedy scenes! One day I had taken this book with me to the park and I couldn’t stop myself from laughing out loud! Yes, definitely got some crazy lady stares lol!

I loved the main character, Beth, who was a 45-year-old teacher and divorcee. She was very sweet and thoughtful – always putting others needs above her own. Unfortunately, she was abused by her ex-husband. They had two sons and her husband completely blamed her for their death. I felt like Beth would be someone I would want to be friends with. She has had some very sad and difficult times, but finally gets to take a much needed vacation to Scotland. That’s where this book really takes off. I think many people will relate to Beth and enjoy her demeanor.

This book is totally about second chances/second lives. I love the idea about being able to start over – like a whole new life, but with the knowledge, understanding, and experience of the first life going into the second. Beth was more of a doormat in her first life. She was a pleaser and took care of everyone else, but herself. Now in her second life as Elsbeth she is a sexy, young, take-charge lady with lots of secrets. Even better in her second life, her deadbeat, loser ex-husband is traded in for a handsome, strong, but gentle Highlander!

I would definitely recommend this book as it is fun, exciting, humorous, entertaining, and full of love, humor, tragedy, and second chances! I also think this book shows how good things can come to those who most deserve it and that we may not always get second chances – so always make the most out of each day!

Fate sends woman back to live a second time in 17th century Scotland

When 45-year-old Bethany Ann Anderson interferes with Fate's plans and accidentally dies saving a young boy when someone else was actually meant to die instead, Fate uses the opportunity to correct and old mistake. Since 20-year-old Lady Elspeth was never meant to die before her wedding, depriving her betrothed, Laird Quinton MacLeod of an heir, Fate decides that Bethany will need to trade places with Elspeth and give Quinton an heir before she can continue on with her journey into the afterlife. On top of adjusting to life in the 17th century, Beth finds herself embroiled in a tangled web of treachery Elspeth wove prior to her marriage. Hoping to merely survive and fulfill her mission, little does she expect to fall in love with her new husband. Now Beth must find a way to save Quinton and all she has come to hold dear, but who would ever believe the crazy truth, and even if they did, would they burn her at the stake as a witch? If not, would they execute her anyway for Elspeth's betrayals, or would they allow her to give birth to Quinton's heir first? How will she be able to leave her new husband and child now that she finally has found true love?

This story is a delightful new take on time travel romance. While the Laird is the typical alpha male, rugged, Highlander hero with a soft spot for his lady, the heroine is unique in that she is a 45-year-old woman who has already lived a full life before being thrust into the past. Having suffered through an abusive marriage and mourning the tragic loss of two young children, Beth is a wounded soul seeking forgiveness and healing. Although she found the strength to leave her abuser, the oppressive loneliness and guilt she lives with is a palpable force. Quinton and the clan unexpectedly fill that void in her life in some ways, but Elspeth's secrets and betrayals, as well as the gulf between her time and the 17fh century keep Beth. This dichotomy serves as an excellent source of tension for the story, and the plot is always exciting. I read this book in one sitting, and will definitely look for more from this author.

A Soft 3 Stars

Spoilers
Beth was a doormat. I understand it is hard for some women to get away from an abusive relationship but she was an educated woman. She was a schoolteacher and the breadwinner. She never once thought she should seek counseling to figure out why she puts up with her husband over the top abusive behavior. Finding a women's support group or the effect this has on her children. Even when she goes back in time she dreams and thinks about him constantly. It seemed all her decisions were based on his negative opinions. It became annoying.

I love an epilogue. This one made no sense. She is returned to her original modern life after her lifetime with the hero. Her children are no longer killed in an auto accident because a descendent of hers from her marriage to the hero's has changed the course of events. Well if her children hadn't died she wouldn't have gone to Scotland and been accidently killed. Therefore there would be no descendents to change anything. Major plot hole.

An OK read but nothing special.

I really enjoyed the story in this book. I liked the characters and the time traveling back to Scotland. I especially liked the ending. However, I got really distracted by the overuse of words such as "clit" and "cunt." I much prefer steamy sex scenes with a little more class, such as those of Julie Garwood's stories. Also, the Scots' accents could have been executed a little better. As they were, they just annoyed me and distracted me from the story. With the time traveling and Scottish elements, it's hard not to compare this story to Outlander. Overall, I liked the idea of this story, but the writing could have used some more polishing.

I received this book as a Goodreads First-Read. Yay!

2.5 stars. This book was OK. I got sucked in by the time travel romance hook but the book never really delivered. The characters are interesting people who I wanted to root for. But the plot was a little formulaic. The h spent a lot of time in her head and some of her conclusions were ridiculous and I got tired of her nonsense about her previous life. It went on a little too long. She was 45 years old for heaven's sake! Grow up and get over yourself.

I did enjoy the epilogue. It was a nice touch.

I am in love with this heroine just as much, if not more than, the hero of this romance! Afterall, she's me!! She's 40-something, but not your typical middle-aged woman. I don't mean in the looks department because in her physical appearance she's all too typical with hair beginning to gray and a few sizes larger than she would wish to be. It's her tragic life experiences that set her apart from most. However, fate bestows on her a second chance at life, and the hardest thing this woman will ever do is learn to grab her chance by the horns and hang on for the ride.

New spin on time travel

This was an interesting story with a new spin on time travel. The romance was wonderful & the characters were likable. The villains were bad but the good wins in the end. You can't predict the outcome due to twists & turns in the story. The epilogue was terrific and I just wanted it to go on longer. Well worth reading.

So differential in the best way!

I really liked that the storylines is different from all of the others I have read before, and such a surprise ending! I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I....

Absolutely a winner

Wasn't sure what to expect, but charming works. As always great characters, amusing a and fun. Nice twist in the end, too.
