Socialite Trista Patterson has turned her back on her life of privilege and dedicated herself to helping others. Her mission to protect the world’s children often takes her into the bleak and violent underbelly of third world countries. When a kidnapping attempt goes wrong, Trista quickly finds herself running for her life…and married to a man she just met…as she’s placed at the top of the Cartel’s most wanted list.
Some days no good deed goes unpunished.
Dane O’Brien has spent his life in the shadows. Once a lethal assassin he grew tired of losing his soul with every hit, trading his gun and missions for a conference table and office politics as an undercover operative for the CIA. But when visiting his humanitarian sister turns deadly, Dane finds himself swearing to protect her beautiful and passionate friend Trista no matter the cost…even if it means stepping back into the world he swore never to return to. Although falling for the tough-hearted Trista is easy, keeping her alive is hard.

Trista/Eve is my kind of heroine. She's a total badass that hasn't lost her soft side. The book was fast paced and action filled. Truly a great ride where the lines between good and bad are blurred and not everything is what it seems. Dane is a badass in his own right. Calm, cool, and collected under pressure with a best friend in high places and a government intent on leashing him. The plot was interesting and consistent. The pace kept me at the edge of my seat. The action was well written. The romance focuses less on physical intimacy and more on an emotional bond. The relationship revealed itself very well throughout the story. At the end, I had an even better appreciation for our heroine. All in all, a very good book and a perfect adventure.
Travelling to San Stefano in Columbia to check all is well with his sister, Jenny Bloom, the last thing Dane O'Brien anticipated was getting caught up in rescuing Jenny's friend and coworker Trista! Not only that, his sister has no idea about his secret life as an undercover CIA agent, one who was notorious as a 'ghost' - he slipped unseen into dangerous situations to eliminate enemies, but he was trying to leave that life behind, hating the nightmares reliving the assassinations he'd carried out. Now, however, he'll need all those skills as Trista has not only escaped from her captors but she's killed them both. The drug lord is now determined to kill her, too!
This is the fantastic fast paced thriller concluding this enthralling series. Many of the characters from the earlier books play key roles in this one, too, so I recommend reading them first even though I suspect this would still work well as a standalone read. All the key characters are complex, with pasts affecting both their attitudes and behaviour. The development of relationships is superbly portrayed, complete with all the fears, indecision and attractions, helping the reader understand their turmoil, reactions and emotional responses. The same high standard applies to the scenarios, helping the reader feel like they are a witness to the events, taking them right into the heart of the story. A very personal connection with this story was made when someone was discussing their dream wedding scenario which included visiting Antigua - which is where I was on the day I read that particular part of the story!
Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
No puntúo. No me parece justo sin haber leído algo más de él.

I am not going to like this story at all. It seems to me silly, shallow, really rushed, with too many coincidences and not a realistic thing in it. Nothing, zero, zilch. I have not managed to believe a single line I have read and I am completely disconnected to the plot, and as this has happened to me without reaching the 18% mark, better leave it here. Honestly, I think that this book is one of those who do not deceive. If reading the sample you like it, you are going to enjoy it, if, like me, you don't like the sample, you'll save some time and money. I am not going to rate it. I do not think it would be fair because I almost read nothing of it.
A kidnapping attempt goes terribly wrong and leads Trista Patterson down a road she’d never imagine. In a matter of days, she finds her old identity buried and a new one that proclaims her married to a man whose past is kept from her and a new career path that she’s blackmailed into by Simon Dunn.
‘True Peril’ is a plunge back into the shadowy world of arms-dealing, covert operations, double-crossings and deep cover identities that Veronica Forand portrays with intricate detail, but it also reminds me of the slightly off characterisations that once again, make me hesitate about liking both Trista/Dane as a pairing. There are narrative twists and turns that made me incredulous than thrilled and like Trista/Eve, I felt rail-roaded into reading about decisions that were difficult to accept.
Dane and Eve on their own are formidable characters; the latter more than the former at least, because her fortitude in the face of uncertainty and mitigating circumstances was more than admirable. But together, their relationship is frustrating for reasons that I find difficult to articulate other than the premise of it being a fictional one based on necessity. Their connection was merely lukewarm and never quite fulfilled its potential, with Dane doing little to deepen a bond that he proclaims to want after knowing her for a short period of time. They spend much of the book flitting in and out of each other’s lives, behaving like Simon’s pawns (once again, I’m reminded why I couldn’t like Simon at all as a leading main character), with very little opportunity for trust to build all around. Dane spends all his time trying to deny Eve’s capabilities while Eve’s conciliatory attitude to Dane and Simon after their awful treatment of her baffled me. Consequently, their mutual declarations of love in enemy crossfire felt forced and abrupt, particularly after Eve had sort of been betrayed by Dane and Simon.
My enjoyment of this story has been greatly curtailed by the fact that the romance inserted into the story—and its dysfunctional characters—felt too stunted to buy into; perhaps ‘True Peril’ would have functioned better as a suspense novel without any romantic entanglement at all.

Love this author and this series. Romantic-suspense with a twist similar to Anne Stuart. True Peril has a plot that keeps you guessing and a romance that grabs you and makes you feel the highs and lows right alone with Eve and Dane. The books in this series are fairly well connected and it is advised to read them in order as Simon, in particular, plays major roles in them all.
When Dane takes a trip to visit his sister, he comes back with a pretend wife and in debt to Simon for getting both him and Eve out of a very dangerous situation. What was supposed to be a temporary, and maybe very satisfying, interlude turns into a nightmare as a drug lord bent on revenge threatens them. Eve proves to have a mind of her own and Simon manipulates their lives to get what he wants most - Dane as his #2.
A thrilling adventure that will keep you glued to the page. Suspend belief and hold on because things don't get more exciting than this. Between assassins, drug cartels, arms dealers, kidnappings, chases through the jungle, the bullets are flying non stop. The crew also seem to be able to travel halfway across the world at the drop of a hat and do so in record time. There is no hanging about. Refreshingly, Eve is a woman who can handle herself in tough situations and proves her mettle on more than one occasion. She also has Dane tripping over himself to protect her. Dane is a good character and a bit more likeable than Simon. I really love how the two men constantly argued but behind all the macho bravado are good friends.
Highly recommended.

Dane, a CIA undercover operative, is on a personal mission concerning his baby sister, Jenny. Upon arriving in Columbia, where Jenny is doing humanitarian work, Dane finds his sister safe. However, she's distraught over the rebels kidnapping her roommate, Trista.
Trista, a former socialiate, has turned her back on her former life of privilege and is now living to help others. That empathy, and the need to save a young girl, has landed her in some serious danger...taken by the Cartel.
Thankfully, Dane finds Trista fairly quickly and realizes she pretty much saved herself. But he knows, based upon his own "shadowy" past, the actions she had to take will haunt her.
When circumstances lead to Dane being discovered by some not nice people and taken to their boss, Trista decides she needs to help Dane as he helped her. This leads to Dane using one of his personas, thereby saving his butt, and in turn covering Trista's by introducing her as his wife, Eve. Thus Eve is born and her life as Trista is well on the way to only being a memory.
When a situation with Simon, a friend of Dane's, albeit a dangerous one, leads to an instinctual reaction that could've hurt Eve (formerly known as Trista), Dane takes immediate action to rectify it, which shows Dane how attached he is quickly becoming to Eve, his fake wife, which results in him putting some much needed, on his part, distance between them. As if that wasn't enough, Dane also allows her to mistakenly interpret a situation, therefore leading her to believe he's found other companionship for a few hours, causing her undue pain. Pain that Dane feels is necessary to protect himself, even as he hates himself for being the one responsible for it.
As Dane's friend, Simon, maneuvers Dane and Eve around like chess pieces to accomplish his goals, Dane and Eve realize their connection is strong and real. While Dane doesn't like her working for Simon, therefore putting herself in danger, he is starting to get a better picture of the real Eve. He also takes Simon up on his employment offer, thereby replacing Eve and keeping her safe, but she won't take sitting on the sidelines easily because that's not who she is.
Dane and Eve grow closer but outside responsibilities consistently require that their focus be elsewhere. Dane's CIA job, which he can't easily resign from, leads to him traveling, Eve's new role as Simon's assistant, Dane's future as Simon's partner, rescuing Jenny, Dane's sister, and making sure Eve will remain safe from those after her.
Will Dane and Eve get their HEA? Will they both embrace their new professional positions? Will Jenny be rescued? Will Eve ever be safe from those after her?
On a side note, and this is purely based upon my personal preference, I really do not care for numerous mentions of the hero's sexual history and/or the inclusion of what equates to a "friend/sort of co-worker with benefits" and how her voice has always made him hot, except for now, of course, how he knows she's always willing to drop anything at a moment's notice to be at hus side *cough cough booty call* and how after the sham marriage is resolved, he'll have to work hard to get back "in her good graces" when he's single again. Plus, the mental musings of how he'd have a woman in every city he visited for his job, and at the end of the book, the casual mention as he's walking towards Eve at a table, and this is after he and Eve have professed their love and have decided to make their marriage real, of a busty waitress trying to coax him to spend some time with her and how Eve noticed, as this part is from her point of view, "his eyes sparkled from the attention" but he politely declined and continued on to Eve, blah blah blah. In my opinion, I feel this particular part was in no way needed and contributed nothing to the story, and found it a little inappropriate that "his eyes sparkled from the attention" of any woman other than Eve, the woman he professed to love and want a real marriage with, especially when we've been reminded a plethora of times of his past. Yes, I understand both characters have a sexual past and yet, it is not mentioned for Trista/Eve like it is repeatedly for Dane. Nor are we confronted by any of her former partners as we are by Dane's previous/whenever he wants her reminder of said past. Yes, I understand her part was all done by telephone and her skills were necessary to "re-identify" Trista, but still. I only want to read about the hero with the heroine and vice versa. I don't care to revisit either of their past hook-ups nor does one need to be a character in the story, regardless of how small the role is. While these mentions don't detract from the story per se, they bothered me enough to make me lose interest in the connection the main characters are forming because I'm seemingly reminded on a continual basis that he basically will get with any woman, simply because he can. That is not attractive to me, and it is in fact a turn-off. I wanted to enjoy the book as the premise sounded intriguing and upon first meeting the main characters I was rooting for them, yet with each mention of his past "lovers" *I use that term loosely because he's the poster boy for hitting and quitting*, I gradually lost any interest at all in their future. I wish in some way it would've been mentioned in the blurb that the hero, and I'm also using that term loosely because he was not hero material in my eyes, was essentially, prior to meeting Eve of course, a manwhore.
Now again, that's my preference and those type of things have always been an issue for me, and I know they may not impact others the same way. If that's the case, I do recommend this book. The plot was unique and I feel that in all likelihood if it wouldn't have been for my hard lines being repeatedly and unnecessarily touched upon, I would have enjoyed this story. I like the plot and for the most part the writer's style as I feel she is talented in what she does, however, for me at least, these numerous mentions overshadowed my enjoyment of the story.

I thought that this was a very smooth flowing plot that did not have much down time. The characters were well developed and seemed like they were on the move all the time in the story.
Dane is a CIA agent that is always into one thing or another. Dane has not told his sister the whole truth about his job so she thinks that he does something else besides what he really does. When Dane gets word that his sister Jenny may be in trouble with the Cartel, he does the only thing that he knows to do and that is to go after her. Dane will stop at nothing to help his sister and to get her out of the bad situation that she is in. Jenny is helping teach over in Columbia, but has somehow gotten on the Cartel's list. When Dane gets to Jenny, he finds out that her partner that works with her over there, Trista, has just been kidnapped and Jenny begs Dane to go find her and help her get away from the Cartel.
When Dane does find Trista, she has killed 2 of the soldiers that kidnapped her and is scared to death of what might happen to her next. Dane helps her get away, but in the midst of them escaping, they run upon another group of soldiers that takes Dane. Dane does everything he can before the soldiers get there to keep them from finding Trista and makes her fall down a hill. Trista has no clue what is going on at first but then she hears the soldiers and knows that Dane was just trying to save her. the soldiers end up finding Trista eventually anyway and taking her to where Dane is. Dane makes up a story about Trista being his wife and hopes that Trista is smart enough to play along with his game.
When Dane and Trista get away from the soldiers again, Dane knows that he has to make some calls to make the marriage look real or Trista is never going to make it out alive. The adventure and suspense in this story is riveting and will keep you turning the pages. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen for Dane and Trista and if Jenny was going to make it back safely. Veronica Forand did a very good job with keeping this one moving. I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next!! This story has just the right amount of romance as well!
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review by Entangled Publishing and NetGalley.
“You’re killing me,” he growled. “No problem,” she murmured with her lips against his kin. “I’m really good at mouth to mouth resuscitation.”
Trista Patterson was used to being left behind so when Dane O’Brien seemed to be doing the opposite, she was curious. Could this man, despite their unusual start, be the man who stuck around for the long haul? Well, as long as she wasn’t murdered or anything….
Dane was not going to fall under the spell of a woman. Simon had fallen before him, and Simon’s brother, Henry before him. So what if they were all so sickeningly happy. He and his new ‘wife’ could enjoy each other for the short term, stay alive and then move on when the time was right. He wasn’t going to fall in love. Not going to happen!
Yah, I laughed too. This series excels at bringing together polar opposites in pairings that seemed heaven-made… eventually. Eve (formerly Trista) is trying to get used to her new name and the turn her life has taken. With danger stalking their every step, and even “friends” getting in on the action, her heart is in mortal danger. Especially when Dane doesn’t seem to treasure it as much as she hoped.
There is drama and angst among guns and criminals, but the danger to their lives is nothing compared to the danger they face from each other. Misunderstandings and twists and turns are going to have the whole crew debating their chosen professions once again. Full of life and love, these characters and their stories are firmly on my favorite reads of 2016 list! ~ Diane, 4 stars
Exciting, compelling and smart from the get-go. I loved True Peril! The main characters really pulled me into this action-packed story. Trista is fearless, caring and just awesome. I like when heroines are badass but when that comes organically to them--like when it's just who she is, and she has reasons for it. It wasn't forced or contrived; and she's a complex character.
Dane is a fabulous hero. He steps in to help his sister, then suggests a MOC to protect Trista's true identity. A lot happens from then on... and the relationship between Trista and Dane is cute to watch. There is this subtle sensuality, this sense of humor, this doing what one can for the other... it has all the ingredients for me as a reader to believe they are a great match and meant to be together.
Such a good book!! This is the first book I've read by Veronica Forand, and thanks to how well written and fully entertaining it was, I will definitely be reading everything else I can get my hands on by Ms. Forand. The relationship between Trista and Dane starts out as funny, stays funny throughout the entire book, but also gains an element of sweetness that I loved. 100% recommend!

Review:
Another exciting installment in this series!
Lots of action and adventure going on in this romantic suspense. We have all kinds of factions working for and against each other in this book, MI6, CIA, South American drug lords, and that is just some of the few in this book. I found this book more violent and action-packed than the previous books. I do love the intrigue of these stories and how they build upon each other in the series. Though this could be a stand alone, I appreciated reading the others since it does touch on past events and how the characters in this book relate to one another. While there is romance, there is not blatant smexy going on, so it is low on the heat scale if that is what you are looking for. I did love the characters, Trista/Eve is awesome; she kicks butt and takes names. And Dane, well after the last story, I had hoped this ladies-man would fall and fall hard. They have great chemistry and their differences compliment each other. Plus, they had a great fake marriage before the real one.
Wonderful book and series, full of action, adventure, suspense and romance...well worth the read.

Spies, drugs and arms dealers with more action than a Bond movie! Turns out this book is part of a series, book three, but is very easy to read without the others. Cassie and Simon were in the previous book and Alex and Henry were in the first. Both characters are included in this book with a brief history lesson. Simon and Cassie play a significant role in Eve and Dane's story, I definitely need to read theirs because Simon is incredibly intense and alpha but with Cassie he drops to a beta. Eve/Trista, you have to read it to understand the names, was raised with a silver spoon but opted to make a life for herself by helping children rehab into a world of learning and steering away from drugs and guns. A serious event takes place that leads Dane to help her and turn her world upside down. Eve is an extremely strong woman with hidden skills and a deep desire for Dane. Speaking of Dane, the man has far too many secrets than he can handle but he does it. Dane O'Brien is the ultimate Bond character as a spy for the CIA working with Simon, also working undercover of sorts. The cover of the book would lead you to believe this is a sexy romance with a little smidge of suspense, but you'd be wrong. The romance is there among the bullets, knives and kevlar but ultimately this is a suspense novel through and through. Forand writes a book that makes you want to read every second and never put it down, it's exciting and captivating. My copy was given through Netgalley for my honest and unbiased opinion. This is my first Forand novel but I'm eager to read the others.
I did not realize when I started this book that it was actually book three in a series. Later on in the story, it became obvious that some of the characters had a backstory I didn't know all about. It did work well as a standalone though, and the characters from previous novels just inspired me to check those out too.
The story takes place primarily in South America and England. Trista is a very independent and self reliant foreign aid worker who ends up kidnapped by a drug cartel. When Dane, her co-worker's older brother, shows up to check on his sister, he finds her devastated and terrified for Trista. Though his sister is unaware, Dane has all the training he needs to take off after Trista and attempt a rescue. Surprisingly, Trista had already done most of the work herself. She just needs a way tho become someone else. Dane has the perfect solution. She can be his wife.
This crazy stop gap measure buys them some time, but also results in even more trouble, especially when they begin to believe in their marriage. The story crosses back and forth across the globe and has lots of action and simmering chemistry (All intimate scenes are behind closed doors so to speak and between married couples.) I loved both Dane and Trista. They really were perfectly matched.
Romantic Suspense is fast becoming one of my favorite genres. I loved each book in this trilogy, I hope Veronica Forand continues with the series (hint, hint!). The action is fast-paced and she writes likable characters that makes you not want to put the book down. We need more of Veronica Forand!
Dane O'Brien is in a small village in Colombia to drag his sister home and out of danger. When he finds her, she sends him to rescue her room mate who has been kidnapped by the local cartel. Little does Dane know but Trista is about to turn his life inside out and upside down. Trista Patterson was working at the school in the village when the cartel fighters came and tried to take one of the girls. She persuaded them to take her instead. A big mistake for them. Our hero is working for a few different organizations , one of them is the CIA. He usually works alone, but has contacts he can call on. Our heroine is a bit of an adrenaline junkie. She has a bad habit of getting into dangerous situations, but is also very resourceful. A marvellous action packed thriller. This story hardly gives you time to breathe between life and death decisions.. It is book #3 in the series but easily read as a stand alone. Although if you are going to read the series it would contain spoilers for the previous ones. If you are looking for an exciting read this is it.
True Peril is the third installment in Veronica Forand’s thrilling romantic suspense, True Lies series, which can be read as a stand-alone but for backstory, and some badass amazing supporting characters, I recommend reading the previous two installments.
This is an action packed, thrilling-suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. What makes of this story one of the most exciting and captivating reads that I was not able to put down, is all the action the author manage to pull through between bullets, knives, the drug cartel, arms dealers, the kidnapping, sex traffickers, twists and turns, and much more. Oh, and don’t forget “romance”.
WHAT A RIDE! I absolutely LOVE this book! I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Wow, now I'm torn between which of the books in this series is my favorite. I LOVED Simon's book, but Dane gave him a run for the money. I guess what I liked about it most is that I got a lot of both men throughout the story. I loved seeing Simon with Cassie after their HEA, but it was soooo much fun watching Dane fall at the same time. (And watching Simon push him along.) I loved Eve's personality too. She was tough but soft and vulnerable at the same time.
As for the plot....LOADS of suspense and intricacies. I loved how, even though the story was complex, Veronica manage to describe it beautifully and keep me engaged. Definitely a series worth digging into.
Wow, this one had a lot going on and all of it was delicious! International intrigue, espionage, marriage of convenience, and a great slow building romance all wrapped up in one fabulous read. Trista is a wonderful strong character who has dedicated her life to helping others. When she's the one that really needs helping, she has to rely on Dane O'Brien to give her that help. He has secrets and a boat load of issues though so the attraction between them can't happen. Or can it??
This is a well written, fast paced story that will draw you in and not let go. Ms. Forand does an excellent job keeping the story action packed and full of intrigue. The characters are well developed and likable. Eve was the perfect stubborn, strong heroine. I loved seeing characters from the previous books in this series have a part in this one as well. Highly recommend!
ARC received from Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
Loved this book! This is a well crafted romantic suspense that grabbed my attention from the first page and held it until the very last page. I was actually sorry when it ended. If you've read books by this author before, you know that she is a very talented storyteller, but even knowing that doesn't prepare you for just how well crafted this complicated story is. This one is a must read.
While this is part of a series, it is a stand alone novel. Fans of the genre will love this book.
My first introduction to Forand, I found this to be a great ride. Of course, now I’m going to have to go back and read the first two books. I’ll get there eventually because she writes kick ass women, non-stop action and smoking romance.
This is a pretty intense story. Never a dull moment, this roller coaster of a story kept me glued to the pages waiting to see what would happen next and how it would all work out. If you love strong alpha men, and even stronger women, then you will love this book. I loved how Dane was all over trying to help and protect Trista instantly after briefly conversing with his sister. Their connection was immediate and powerful. Throw in a funny, strong, even more alpha best friend with his feisty wife and you have a great story. Simon and Cassie, from book 2 of this series, make a wonderful and impactful appearance in this book. I haven't read their story, but after loving them in this book, I need to go back to read it. The words of this book flew off the pages and made very vivid images in my mind. Several scenes of shock, gore, devastation, and heartbreak will pull you in more to this story. And the wrap up/revenge was so well done.

Review:
True Peril by Veronica Forand is book 3 of her True Lies series. This reads very well as a standalone, so you don’t need to read the earlier books, but there are a few characters from the previous books in this book.
Wow ! Great way to start a book, a kidnapping, an attempted rescue and killings all in the first chapter! Can we keep the pace up ?
The answer is yes, this book starts off running and keeps up the fast pace. The banter and chemistry is great between Trista and Dane. The scenes are descriptive and very well written.
Dane is use to visiting his sister in dangerous places, but he never imagined he would have to rescue one of her friends. Dane is a very active character, he hides a secret from his sister. He is an undercover agent for his government, he goes in and does the dirty jobs, and he works alone. Seducing women for secrets and cover, he hasn’t got time to fall in love.
Trista is tired of being a pampered princess. Tired of being ignored by her family, she devotes her life to helping others less fortunate than herself. And in a tiny village she meets Jenny and they become best friends. Jenny doesn’t know that Trista is a trust fund baby, she knows that her friend wanted to join the police force, but pressure from the family (how embarrassing, their daughter a blue collar worker ) forced Trista to leave.
Dane is forced to rescue Trista, but is totally taken by surprise, she rescues herself and they flee into the jungle. Our girl knows how to handle herself.
And now Trista is on the run from a drug lord, she needs to get out of the country, but with no passport or documents, that doesn’t look likely. In steps Dane and pulls a few strings, Trista is now Eve and she is married to Dane !
Reading the adventure as it unfolds for Trista and Dane was a wild and exhilarating ride. There were twists, turns and Laugh out loud moments, the author kept me reading until the early hours
True Peril will hold you to its pages from start to ending with fast action, secret identities, daring rescues, a marriage of convenience with more secret identities and a man who will do everything possible including emotional harm to convince one innocent woman that he is the wrong man for her – even when in his heart he knows that is just one more true lie. (yes, I went there and made a pun on the series title. *grin*)
This is one of those stories where it would be so easy to give away far too much in a review. Dane is a master at becoming someone else, his life at one time meant folding into the shadows and taking out some of the worst pieces of dog dirt on the planet. Now his life involves more time behind a desk, in a conference room or directing an operation from a remote location undercover. He is a man who has seen too much evil, and done far too much himself in the name of justice and protection. He doesn’t see himself as a hero, and he definitely doesn’t deserve the love of a good woman like Trista.
Trista intends to make a difference in the world, mostly through working with children at greatest risk through her humanitarian efforts. She’s a hands on woman, one who has shed her shell of privilege and wealth to go and do what matters most. Even when her caring nature lands her in a ton of hot water, dangerous situations and under the protection of the one man who could bring her more purpose and happiness than she ever imagined possible. He rescued her and she rescued him right back. If they make it out of here alive, they just might have a future – if Dane will admit to his feelings and give up on trying to keep her at arm’s length.
True Peril has more twists and turns than a sidewinder in the desert. Dane and Trista are believable characters placed in situations that really are not that unusual in our world today, sadly. Trista is a strong woman who is no damsel in distress, she can rescue herself thank you very much. Yet, having Dane at her side certainly comes in handy, especially with his unique skills. The secondary characters were strong and well defined – the bad guys particularly evil. This is the third story in the True Lies series, yet I do not believe you need to have read the first two to completely understand and enjoy this one.
I would recommend True Peril to any reader who enjoys strong characters, a plot full of suspense and twists and a couple who obviously belong together they just have to get themselves pulled together to realize it. The two earlier books in this series, Untrue Colors and True Deceptions are well worth a read if you would like to go back to the beginning.
*I received an e-ARC of True Peril from the publisher, Entangled Publishing – Select Suspense and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
After meeting Dane O'Brien in True Deceptions, I've been looking forward to reading more about this intriguing guy who's CIA cover is selling drones in California!
All Dane intended was a quick visit to the volatile Columbian jungle to check up on his little sister Jenny. Since the death of her husband, her work protecting and educating at-risk children has taken her to many dangerous places. San Stefano is no exception. On arrival, Dane is alerted to trouble and sets off to find his sister's missing friend. It wasn't part of his plan; he prefers a quieter life nowadays, and it isn't long before circumstances require him to name drop “Simon Dunn” to talk himself out of a tricky corner with a Columbian drug baron! All for a woman!
Trista Patterson, a socialite who trained as a police officer much to the disapproval of her parents, moved away from her privileged upbringing to help at-risk children in rural Columbia. After a raid on the village where she works, she allows herself to be taken hostage to save the life of a young teenage girl. Her training serves her well as she successfully defends herself against her two captors but then has to somehow make her way back to the village and her colleague Jenny Bloom. Whilst hiding out, she's surprised that someone is out looking to rescue her. A feat which proves to have life long consequences attached to it.
The plot moves effortlessly along as the two protagonists are thrown together courtesy of a quick thinking decision Dane makes on behalf of Trista. Now enter Simon Dunn, who's not happy about getting involved in his friend's “problems,” But ever the opportunist, the “rough around the edges” tough guy seizes the opportunity to manipulate the situation to further his own gains. He has plans for Dane O' Brien...if only he'd listen and accept!
Ms. Forand's writing is impeccable as always as she leads on a journey from South America to rural England and back again. The plot twists as the protagonists struggle to understand each others motivations due to misunderstanding and false presumption...all whilst Simon Dunn plays them both to his advantage. Thus, the suspense is the strongest link in True Peril, while Dane and Trista's relationship is secondary resulting in a lower than a 5-star rating.
This Third book in the True Lies Series and can be read as a standalone, although I highly recommend reading Untrue Colors and True Deceptions to gain a greater character insight into Dane, Simon and Cassie. There is a more than welcome cameo from Henry and Alex too. Ms. Forand is one of my go-to authors and that status isn't going to change any-time soon.

Having enjoyed “Snowed” by Veronica Forand, this avid cartel romance NetGalley reviewer was very intrigued by the book synopsis for True Peril. Though I loved the action packed circumstances that lead to the main couple meeting in South America, once they left for London, I became concerned it was headed for a “cocky hero repeatedly breaks the heart of the heroine”, “lusty verses romantic” read. Mostly due to my increasing doubts about the hero’s overall likeability. It seems he had a woman at every port, was a use ‘em and leave ‘em kind of guy, and was quick to take up with every random woman who batted her eyes at him. Not until about 35% into it, starting with Simon and Dane’s unexpected appearance at Trista’s parents’ home, I realized this feisty heroine would never put up with that. Sure, she was hurt by the false perceptions Dane put into place at the beginning trying to protect her from himself but ultimately he couldn’t win out over his own desire to be near her. You see, Trista/Eve mostly reformed this Casanova without even trying. I say mostly because a few times he still seemed to have an eye for the ladies, but at least he wasn’t intimate with them after meeting the heroine. That still doesn’t sit well with this true romantic at heart.
All in all, this story turned out to be more of a suspense/thriller than romance (70%/30%). There was a lot of shop talk/drama regarding the CIA, arms dealing, MI6, and two shootouts involving the cartel. I know the intent was to make it feel authentic, but, for me, it did steal time away from the MC’s romance. I would have preferred it to have ended with the dramatic events that unfolded with the second cartel showdown. Instead, it seemed overly drawn out in its conclusion. I did enjoy Simon’s character, even though I am confused exactly which side of the law he was really on.

I did like this story about how a former socialite named Trista went from living for only herself to living for others. Thing is, you have to learn how to balance that need or you can get into trouble and that is what has happened to her. She is living to help others and she is trying to go out of her way to help a young girl in danger taken by a drug Cartel. She is kidnapped because she is poking her nose in where it doesn’t belong. Dane who is a CIA undercover operative and Jenny’s older brother is in Columbia . He is concerned about his sister who is very worried about Trista—because they are roomies and when Trista doesn’t come home, she realizes she has been kidnapped by the Cartel or by someone tied to them. That is where Dane gets involved. Dane goes on a rescue mission and finds Trista pretty fast but things happened before he got to her will weight on her and he is worried about that. Dane is able to save Trista but before they get away, she suffers some injuries and Dane has to call in some favors to get out but not before they question who Trista is to him. That is where Eve comes in…Dane claims she is his wife and he has to make it look real. In order to make it out alive, her past was buried and a new one is alive. Will Dane and Eve/Trista even make it out of Columbia alive? Will Eve/Trista and Dane recognize the sexual chemistry that is burning between them? And why is she being pretty much turned to this new career not by choice but by blackmail of the highest degree by Dane’s boss Simon? There is so many things going on , so many layers that I needed to know all the players. I did like this story and the intrigue. There is somewhat enough of a good backstory but I still needed more . I do like Dane-he is mucho macho male. Trista/Eve has a heartbreaking past but she is someone now who needs a good man to be there for her and once she gets going, she is sassy and independent. I liked the outcome. I would love to read more by this author because this was a good story. My rating: 4.0 stars **** *I was given an ARC by the publisher in exchange for an honest review***
I love a good romantic suspense novel, and TRUE PERIL delivers!
CIA agent Dane O'Brien is unsanctioned and deep in Colombian cartel territory to retrieve his do-gooder sister and bring her home. When he learns that her roommate Trista Patterson has been kidnapped by a rebel faction, Dane promises to get her to safety, even though he left the front line world behind and is more than happy working the desk instead of a rifle. But things are never easy when dealing with thugs, and Trista is now Eve O'Brien, faux-married to Dane and working for his frenemy Simon in London. Simon's operation blurs the line between good and evil, and Eve finds her own lines blurring as well as she hones skills she's long buried deep. Can she and Dane find common ground in this new shades of gray world?
I was skeptical about how much I'd enjoy TRUE PERIL, as it started out slow and with a very dry tone. However, once the action started, I found myself entranced by the intricate story and the players. At 300 pages, this third book in the True Lies series was at about my threshold for even the most incredible of novels, but TRUE PERIL managed to keep my attention with a decently paced and interesting storyline. The action kept me going through the down times, and allowed me time to fall for Eve and Dane, Simon and Cassie. For super secret spy-types though, I have to say that the dudes were a couple of chatty Cathy's, and Simon didn't come off even slightly as someone that every warmonger in the world should fear, which means I must hear his story in order to get it. So off I go, in search of the first 2 books in the True Lies series to play catch up with this group of super spies!
This was a suspenseful drama that starts you off right out of the beginning. When Dane goes to see his sister and even try and persuade her to come home. She thinks nothing of herself but asks he go after her friend whom the rebels have taken. When he does though he finds she has accomplished quite a bit on her own but must now get her out. He tells her though she must go out as his wife and he makes the steps to make it happen. That is the beginning to some fast past events that this author will keep you nose to the grind. Trista who now is Eve also finds herself in another world with a different pace that she does manage to adjust to you have to give her that. Dane is one that must be worth it but then they will be finding out quite a bit about each other. Even when she thinks she will walk away another of Dane's friend's will she him just how much she really means. Simon and his wife are a nice addition to this story that make for a balanced read in this romance. As a group they are quite interesting to read the way this author lays it out. You have to like the espionage and the like and if you do you will love this. It takes you away from beginning to end.
