This book brought me so much joy this year. I never learned about Islamic Design before coming to live in Turkey. These patterns are so beautiful! If people in the West knew how gorgeous Islamic architecture and art is, they would want to cherish, protect, and preserve it -- not bomb it!
Eric Broug, a Dutch author, serves as the perfect bridge between cultures popularizing this art form all over the world via his workshops. I am not an artist, nor did I create any geometrical patterns, but I did have such a relaxing, lovely time coloring these patterns and learning about the buildings where they are from. Using this gorgeous book is a superb way to teach oneself the masterpieces of Islamic architecture. There are 48 different patterns on individual sheets inside, each labeled with the building and location it came from.
I wish Eric had also told us where on the building the pattern is located. As soon as I would finish coloring a page, I would go to YouTube and teach myself about the building in question, yet I couldn't tell where the patterns came from though because there are simply so many patterns on each building.
I suggested this title to my book club as our first 'coloring book' to experience together. We enjoyed just getting together to color, hang out, and enjoy each other's company. Later, we had an expert in Islamic Geometrical Patterns take us on an initial pattern hunt around Istanbul and we will repeat the experience.
