Twenty-seven-year-old Rachel Stern is in a rut. Despite her mother’s best efforts, she is still single. At two-hundred and forty-two pounds, she still lives at home, the victim of a constantly-cooking Jewish mother whose force-feeding techniques have become legendary.

As if that isn’t bad enough, Rachel’s Friday and Saturday evenings are spent with her parents and her Saturday mornings consist of wedding gown shopping with her also single best friend. She is clearly going nowhere. But at least she’s not alone. Until her best friend snags a boyfriend.

Finally, unable to stand herself and her weight problem anymore, Rachel signs up for Weight Watchers.

Finnegan Schwartz, a young man who has already been successful at the Weight Watchers program, having lost a hundred pounds, champions Rachel and becomes her impromptu weight loss coach and newest friend. Rachel soon learns there’s so much more to this funny and shy guy who she’d overlooked before.

Amid her mother’s overzealous attempts to fix her up, bizarre family dinners and crises that threaten to unravel the entire Stern family, will Rachel be able to find something she’s never thought was hers for the taking: self-acceptance?

*sigh* Yet another story about the poor overweight girl who's in her mid-20s and still lives with her parents because she can't find a man because of her weight. Her skinny friend gets the hot guy, has the apartment, has everything Rachel wants. I am so tired of this portrayal over and over and over. It's cliche. It's worn out. It's tired. It's done. Why can't Rachel be strong AND overweight? Independent AND overweight? Successful AND overweight? Why does her skinny best friend get perfect man that Rachel secretly loves? I'm disappointed with myself that I wasted the few hours it took to read this. Women, we deserve better writing than this.

The story in a nutshell: Rachel, a twenty-something, overweight, single, Jewish girl, still lives with parents and decides to lose weight and get a boyfriend.

Well, it could have been a nice read, but it wasn't. Thankfully I got a free copy via Bookbub so I did not feel like I had thrown good money out of the window.

The main problem is that Rachel (or anyone else for that matter) is not a likeable character at all.

At first I felt sorry for her leading an absolutely bleak life surrounded by an overbearing mother who is desperate to win the race of keeping up with the Joneses, or Schwartzes in this case, but gives no support for R. when she is determined to lose weight; a selfish, thin best friend who does not seem to be around when R. needs her support & hurts her feelings constantly; a careless father and distant, selfish brothers.
However, as the story goes along you get excruciating details of what R. is eating / not eating / should or shouldn't / can't or won't eat like every 2nd page and her playing the dumb victim/spiritual punchbag to everyone around her starts grating on the nerves quite badly.
I guess all this is a crucial (?) part of the story, but it won't make R. appear any more likeable or a nicer person.

All the parts where Rachel's mother is husband-hunting for her daughter and forces her into embarrassing situations against her will are supposed to be funny (we are soooo over Bridget Jones now), but they are mostly bewildering.
Mummy also makes her bake latkes for their chanukah dinner, despite her entreaties not to, because they must be delivered by noone else (it's not as if they don't have aunts /grandmas, whoever to help), so Rachel ends up binge-eating them.

But beyond belief is her father / mother inviting her lecherous, foul-mouthed (in every way) great uncle into their house when his behaviour to Rachel and her mother borders on sexual abuse and at the same time embarrasses them and their guests.
BUT he gets invited nevertheless, because, as Rachel's dad remarks, he is family after all and chanukah would not be the same without him and dumb Rachel agrees. Oh, really?! I mean WTF?! - And I guess this is supposed to be one of the funniest highlights of the book.

For me this was where things started to go downhill very rapidly - not as if the story was that interesting before! -and by the time I got to the -very abrupt end - I couldn't really care what happened to R & loony, abusive family.

Actually liked this story. It was pretty cute. And I think it’s a pretty important subject a lot of people deal with.

Only thing I didn’t like was the ending. I wanted to know if she reached her goals in life. It was like the story ended abruptly. Also the writing wasn't that well. I had a hard time finishing the story..

There's a hell lot of insecurities. jealousies and maybe PMS? A lot of people experience the same thing as what Rachel had and I think I would have thought the similarly. Thing is she seems to be blaming others (if you call it that) for the things she has control over... just because you are tasked to cook doesn't mean that you eat it and feel guilty for eating the food. Also I hated that part where she regrets eating. Eating is love!

I really like it but then it just ended

The story and characters were endearing and the romance was slow and very nice. But then it just ended abruptly. Like it could have been the end of a chapter but not the book. I am baffled by it. I would have given it a five star because the story was so genuine and nice. There's not even a second book.

Actually more of 3.5 stars. I mostly liked this sweet romance. It starts with 27 yr old (and still living at home) Rachel Stern being signed up for speed dating at her local synagogue by her mom. She is dismayed when none of the guys she picked, picked her and the only guy who seems remotely interested in her was a slightly pudgy guy with a less-than-Jewish name of Finn. When Rachel gets home, she takes stock of her life and decides that one thing she can control is her weight. She decides to start Weight Watchers and she runs into Finn. Finn has lost 100 pounds and becomes her unofficial WW coach. Finn is the best thing about the entire story - sweet, funny, patient - he is the guy you want in your corner. Rachel has a hard time accepting that he really does care for her. It's a nice uplifting story.

1.5 stars, rounded up, but barely. The protagonist of this book is kind of petty and sad. Granted, the author shows how she is treated by a couple of men so we see why she's suspicious and unhappy, but those experiences, topped with a healthy dose of self-loathing don't excuse her meanness towards her mother, her brother, and her best friend (with whom she is jealous and kind of mean at times). The one upside of the novel is that the author makes sure that Rachel does find her prince, at the end (though not a particularly good looking one! Because what normal guy would want a fattie?- how's that for...a stereotype? karma? I don't know how to respond to this ending, honestly). Stopping writing before I drop this to one star. Not recommended.

Not really a good book. I didn't like the main character. I just couldn't connect with her way of thinking.. The book ends very abruptly! I would have like to have know if she reached her goals.

I really loved the plot of this book. I know it is cliche, but I love the idea that the author formed in this novel.
Now you may be thinking 'why did she only give this book 2 stars?'

Well, let me tell you. Even though the story line and plot were great.... The characters were not. Well not characters plural, mostly just one. The heroine, Rachel. How she writes her makes you hate her. This may sound harsh, but honestly it is not. From the very beginning you slowly grow in Nate for the lead female character. First, she is very blah. Yes there are inner thoughts but you don't actually catch a personality to her other than someone who feels sorry for herself all the time. I did expect that aspect in this book, of course (the feeling sorry for herself part) but I did not expect it to be her personality. She is so ungrateful other parents, mainly her mother. Half the time her mother isn't doing anything overly wrong but she yells at her and blame her for things that are her own fault and not others. That would also be fine if maybe she was transferring her inner feelings for herself onto her mother, but she isn't. She actually believe these things to be true. For example when her mom asks her to cook something because she had to work. She ate so much that she gained weight and blamed it on her mother for making her cook food when she is on a diet and didn't want the temptation.... Literally yelled at her mom saying it was her fault she gained weight. Yet she is a 27 year old who lives with her parents where her moms till cooks every meal and does her laundry... Very will, oh and another time when her mom is being so innocent and motherly and trying to give her the sex talk.... She freaks out and yells at her when her mom didn't ask anything overly horrible, embarrassing yes, maybe but nothing to get angry over. So yes her manners towards her mother really bothered me.
Another trait that makes her hate Rachael is the fact that she basically is jealous of her friends whole life a secretly wishes her friends boyfriend will leave her and be with Rachael. What? What kind of friend thinks that way. She is never happy for her friend. Any positive thing she says is followed by negative thoughts or jealous statements. She even goes as far as to think (after her friend and her boyfriend broke up for like a day) that when he asks to meet with her that he actually wants to be with her and is shocked when he starts to talk about her friend and how to get her back.... She is a horrible friend, is always blunt and literally walks away from her friend all the time.
Another thing that bugged me about Rachael was the fact that she was shallow. She sits there pitying herself and saying how no man will want to be with her because she is fat yet when a chubby guy wants to be with her or chooses her on a speed dating night, when she only has nice things to say about his personality, she doesn't choose him because he is over weight and more reserved? Really? Like she gets upset that people don't like her because she is bigger and don't look past it yet she doesn't... Ok.... She only starts to like him when she gets to know him and others tell her they think he is attractive....
Then finally, when you maybe start to be ok with her because she actually picks him.... She goes weird. Lik she is up and down crying then yes then no.... Then crying again. Then... She eats a whole Carton of ice cream... And doesn't notice the fact that she was eating ice cream until it was all gone? What? No...

So basically what I'm trying to say is that Rachael is not likeable at all in this book. She is a character with zero personality.

Another aspect about a character I do not like is Finn.... He is apparently super nice yet..... I don't know I just find that he is bossy.... He constantly just tells her what to do and she is magically ok with it.... But it's said in like a more... Formal way? It almost makes it seem ok but it really bothered me. Like all the time tho... She was like no no no no and he would be like do it and she would be like... Oh ok ! .... Anywho....

I honestly really liked the idea of this book. Like I said cliche....an oldie but a goodie. But the RAcheal ruined it for me..... Really she did.... Which is why it's so low because there are sooooo many aspects of her that are bad. Not just one thing that was constant....

I thought the writing was brilliant and funny, but the lead character i absolutely hated, she is so self involved immature and selfish.

1. She judged Finn on his looks (being chubby) when the whole book is about her being overweight and people not seeing her for who she is, Finn still went out with her.

2. When she constantly moans about having to help her mum out and constantly complaining about said mother to Finn when he has lost his.

3. She does nothing a 27 year old never having shopped for groceries always waiting on her mum to cook for her, wash her clothes and put them away.. Yet she still moans about her mum.

4. When she went to meet her best friends fella and was disappointed it was so he could right things with said friend and wasn't about her.

5. Constantly whining about thin people and how they are judging her .... Like they have nothing better to do, and to be honest she must be ugly as sin to get no attention, i know lots of larger ladies that are beautiful and happy.

I just really disliked her, i literally wanted to jump in the book slap her and tell her to stop acting like such a spoilt brat!

Unfortunately the whole book is focused on this character, and would give it nill stars, but the writing is brilliant love the Jewish family and Pearl the mother is absolutely amazing, interfering yes but lovable too, book gets two stars because she's in it.

Cute little story about an overweight to und woman trying to stand on her own two feet, moving out of her mom's overprotective and overbearing home. Rachel was a little annoying at times but overall a nice enough character. Her *friend* Finn was quite adorable, a little too perfect at times but nothing too over the top. The best friend Sheri was silly and strange in her own ways but makes a great best friend as it seems.
The part about losing weight was integrated nicely, I could very much relate having been there myself. That added a nice connection I felt for Rachel, seeing her struggles with society and relationships due to her weight. Overall the book had a positive message though, although weight loss was a big portion of the storyline it didn't feel like there was any fat shaming going on. Just an overweight girl trying to improve herself but also learning that weight isn't what defines a person.

Any book that conflates fatness with ugliness gets an immediate thumbs down from me. Also the thin best friend who talks about fat people in that way?

The world already thinks fat people shouldn't exist and honestly books that make it seem that happiness can be found at the end of intersection of thinness and a romantic relationship are so exhausting.

I guess I should be glad we were spared the eventual weight loss plus fairy tale wedding.

Well, it seems like much of the Goodreads community disliked this book. I'm going to have to disagree. I enjoyed this book very much! :)

Rachel is 27 years old, overweight, and still single. When she finally decides to join Weight Watchers, her goal is to lose 100 pounds. Maybe then someone will like her. She didn't realize that she would be meeting a new friend at Weight Watchers or that her home life would have some struggles which may set her back.

There's not much else I can say for fear of spoilers, but I did like this book a lot. Sure, the storyline has been used before, but I really like how Greene did it. I felt like I could relate to Rachel (even though I'm not single, not 100+ pounds overweight, and not Jewish) and her emotions. I would recommend it, even if others wouldn't.

Rachel Stern is a 27 year old jewish librarian, who still lives at home and with her mum and dad, whom she dearly loves. Rachel has weight problem that has slowly increased over the years and an equally diminishing love life with no changes in sight. Rachel decides that she is sick of her friend Sheri being the one to always have the new boyfriends and so accidentally embarks on a road that leads her to Weight Watchers. What ensues is a journey filled with ups and downs, an enabling feeder of a Jewish mum called Pearl, but leads Rachel to a different path than what she was expecting. A lighthearted holiday read.

Loved this book

Rachel is 27 and still living with her parents. She's overweight and her mom loves her by feeding her. When she goes to a speed dating evening and no one choses her, she decides it's time to join Weight Watchers. Her adventure into independence starts there. The author gives a very convincing portrayal of a person with a large amount of weight to lose, terrified of being used and rejected, struggling to let herself love and be loved in a healthy way. Five stars!

Main character seems very self absorbed and most of the characters are not well defined. I had to laugh though when Rachel's supervisor told her she would be going to be promoted but not to tell anyone and later that day, Rachel seemed to tell everyone including the group at Weight Watchers. Also what's wrong with dating a gynecologist? Lots of odd inconsistencies like that made it seem uneven. The final straw was the abrupt ending--I paged through several times but nope, all done!

Good romance

Finn is such an amazing human being and I'm very happy with how the book ended. I really enjoyed getting to know Rachel and reading how she opened herself up to Finn was so great. There were parts of the book that I just didn't love so that's the main reason for the 3 stars-overall good, but not great in my opinion. I'd still suggest those who enjoy romance read it though 😉

Love this book!

What a great book to start the new year! Following Rachael as she faces her struggles and decides to finally make the changes necessary to change her life and grow up, only to find love along the way (with a sweet and funny guy, I might add) just hit every emotion for a happy new year read!

Wonderful!

Truly enjoyed accompanying Rachel on her journey. As a woman with extra curves, I could relate to all of her thoughts, worries, and insecurities. She voiced many of my own emotions. A wonderful reminder that we are not alone, many of us share the same struggles, and hopefully we can share the joys as well.

The main character does her best to make you hate her the entire book, while you fall in love with the guy that likes her. This book had the start of a great story if the main wasn't such a self absorbed victim that needs to grow up. Just as the book started to get better, it ended with too many questions left unanswered.

This was my airplane ebook, so I only read it when I wasn’t watching a movie or not asleep. Well, when I finally plan to finish it, I finished it too darn fast! This was great. As a WW Lifetime member on all kinds of swings in the experience, I could absolutely relate to Rachel. :). She is a BFF in the experience, and I’m so grateful to know there are Finns out there.

Over too soon!

I would have rated a 5-star if I wasn't jolted out of my socks that this story ended too soon!
I hope there is or will be a book #2! What an amazing love story.
I, too, have had weight issues my whole life, so I understand so much of what Rachael has gone through.
Thank you for putting your thoughts to the pages!

I really enjoyed this book. This is a story about being overweight and difficulties trying to lose it, mixed in with finding self belief and love. It ended a bit abruptly for me, was disappointed that there was no follow on book.
