About the author

Henryk Adam Aleksander Pius Sienkiewicz (also known as "Litwos"; May 5, 1846–November 15, 1916) was a Polish journalist and Nobel Prize-winning novelist. He was one of the most popular Polish writers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905 for his "outstanding merits as an epic writer."

Born into an impoverished gentry family in the Podlasie village of Wola Okrzejska, in Russian-ruled Poland, Sienkiewicz wrote historical novels set during the Rzeczpospolita (Polish Republic, or Commonwealth). His works were noted for their negative portrayal of the Teutonic Order in The Teutonic Knights (Krzyżacy), which was remarkable as a significant portion of his readership lived under German rule. Many of his novels were first serialized in newspapers, and even today are still in print. In Poland, he is best known for his historical novels "With Fire and Sword", "The Deluge", and "Fire in the Steppe" (The Trilogy) set during the 17th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, while internationally he is best known for Quo Vadis, set in Nero's Rome. Quo Vadis has been filmed several times, most notably the 1951 version.

Sienkiewicz was meticulous in attempting to recreate the authenticity of historical language. In his Trilogy, for instance, he had his characters use the Polish language as he imagined it was spoken in the seventeenth century (in reality it was far more similar to 19th-century Polish than he imagined). In The Teutonic Knights, which relates to the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, he even had his characters speak a variety of medieval Polish which he recreated in part from archaic expressions then still common among the highlanders of Podhale.

In 1881, Sienkiewicz married Maria Szetkiewicz (1854-1885). They had two children, Henryk Józef (1882-1959) and Jadwiga Maria (1883–1969).

ciekawe, akcja nie aż tak porywająca jak w trylogii, tak samo jak w trylogii strasznie przyspieszone zakończenie, co również tutaj mi nie przypadło do gustu, dużo wolniej idzie czytanie niż trylogia, ponieważ niektóre sceny są niepotrzebnie bardzo przeciągnięte, za to te którym warto byłoby poświęcić więcej uwagi są pospieszone, jednak w większości dynamika opisu autora idealnie odzwierciedla znaczenie danej sceny i akcję w powieści; Zbyszko, to jak narazie najbardziej irytująca mnie postać napisana przez Sienkiewicza

If you’re looking for a not-boring historical novel, Sienkiewicz is the perfect choice.
Reading my second novel by the author, I’m still amazed how he can describe all events in an engaging language. There’s other topics included like love, drama, friendship, etc so it’s not just history.
However, he still manages to present key events such as wars, battles, and other similar situations in a way that your mind completely imagines what’s going on. Whereas some other writers have really failed at this, at least in my experience.
I loved the plot, loved the events, and how smoothly the author takes you through the story. But most of all-I loved the characters. There’s so much to learn from everyone. The lessons I’ve taken are courage, having your own principles and never abandoning them, loving fully (there are events of father-daughter love as well), staying true to who you are, and more. Another favorite thing about the book is the knightly actions and servitudes which shows how men back then cared for things such as being respectable and keeping their word which is not seen as much nowadays.
Overall, I recommend the book to those who love history and want to consume it through romantic novels.
P.S. I’m definitely gonna read another book by Sienkiewicz.

Doceniam kunszt literacki.... jednak dziwnie było czytać o 12-latce, która jest wielbiona przez dorosłego mężczyznę (18-letniego).Oczywiscie zdaje sobie sprawę, iż były to inne czasy, ale mimo to nadal jest to niesmaczne. Jeżeli chodzi o fabułę : w pewnych momentach byłam wciągnięta i chcialam kontynuować, a wpewnych zmuszalam się do czytania mając z tyłu glowy, że to lektura.Tak jak wszesniej wspomniałam doceniam kunszt, autora, jego talent. Ale mimo to dziwne opisy uprzedmiatawiające kobiety były dla mnie odrzucające. Podsumowywując kiedyś mogła byc to fenomenalna książka, jednak bardzo źle się zestarzała, ze względu na strereotypy, o których możemy poczytać w środku.

Kurde nie wierzę, że to zajęło mi tak długo.
Na początku naprawdę sobie myślałam, że ocenię to na pięć gwiazdek, ale z czasem zaczęło mi się to coraz bardziej rozmywać - nieprofesjonalnie to przyznam, ale nie umiem określić dlaczego tak było.
Co nie zmienia faktu, że polubiłam postacie (tj. Jagienka, Jurand, po części Zbychu), książka jest bardzo fajnie napisana i momentami naprawdę zabawna!
Jeśli ktoś by mnie zapytał czy polecam jakąś książkę to na pewno bym jej nie wymieniła. Natomiast gdyby sprostowano wymagania do "czy masz do polecania jakąś książkę, w której główny bohater jest imbecylem i walczy między jedną komórką mózgowa a swoim kutasem" to bym poleciła❤️

To nie jest książka dla 13-letnich dzieci. Nie powinna być narzucana jako lektura. Ja przeczytałam ją ponownie mając lat 17 i dopiero wtedy doceniłam kunszt pisarski Sienkiewicza oraz fabułę.
This is NOT a book for 13 yrs old children. It SHOULD NOT be mandatory to read this duology for Polish clasess. I have re-read it when I was 17 and only then did I appreciate the craftsmanship of Sienkiewicz's writing and the plot.

Przeczytawszy „Krzyżaków”, niemało się zadziwiłem, jakoż to dzieło kunsztem, fabułą i krasą języka stoi nad wielą innych! Postacie barwne, żywo pociągnęły, a Zbyszkowi, Danusi i Jagience przychylnem sercem byłem. Zali rad bym oznajmił, iżem lekturą ową srodze uradowan! Jako żywo!

Książka ta jest napisana takim językiem i stylem, że nie jest łatwo to czytać (ale to chyba typowe dla Sienkiewicza). Natomiast sama treść i klimat - bardzo dobre. Jeśli ktoś lubi średniowieczne tematy to może go zainteresować.

Przeczytałam "Krzyżaków" w jeden dzień. 503 strony. Łącznie czytałam tego dnia liec godzin. I tak jak w pierwszej części jak akcja się rozkręciła było fajnie. Opisy przytłaczające i chyba tez nie zrozumiałam idei opisania bitwy pod Grunwaldem na jeden cały kilku kartkowe rozdział albo poświęcenie 4 stron na opis zamku krzyżackiego, ale to nie ja jestem autorką.
