A sei donne incontrate fra il 1932 e il 1935, quasi tutte sue amanti occasionali, sono indirizzate queste lettere di Céline, dove sempre risuona la petite musique del suo stile. Sei donne che Céline continua a seguire e proteggere: e, se si guarda bene dal parlare d’amore, non lesina consigli su come usare gli uomini nel modo migliore, cioè «per il piacere e per i soldi». Ma soprattutto, lettera dopo lettera, con una generosità che rende lacerante la violenza autodenigratoria («Già vecchio, depravato, non ricco, malmesso insomma. Tutt’altro che un buon partito. Battona e malfido»), non cessa di illuminare per barbagli, a loro beneficio, il mondo. In fondo, scrive a Évelyne Pollet, «Crepare dopo essersi liberato, è almeno questa l'impresa d'un Uomo! Aver sputato ogni finzione...».

Louis-Ferdinand Céline, pen name of Dr. Louis-Ferdinand Destouches, is best known for his works Voyage au bout de la nuit (Journey to the End of the Night), and Mort à crédit (Death on the Installment Plan). His highly innovative writing style using Parisian vernacular, vulgarities, and intentionally peppering ellipses throughout the text was used to evoke the cadence of speech.

Louis-Ferdinand Destouches was raised in Paris, in a flat over the shopping arcade where his mother had a lace store. His parents were poor (father a clerk, mother a seamstress). After an education that included stints in Germany and England, he performed a variety of dead-end jobs before he enlisted in the French cavalry in 1912, two years before the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. While serving on the Western Front he was wounded in the head and suffered serious injuries—a crippled arm and headaches that plagued him all his life—but also winning a medal of honour. Released from military service, he studied medicine and emigrated to the USA where he worked as a staff doctor at the newly build Ford plant in Detroit before returning to France and establishing a medical practice among the Parisian poor. Their experiences are featured prominently in his fiction.

Although he is often cited as one of the most influential and greatest writers of the twentieth century, he is certainly viewed as a controversial figure. After embracing fascism, he published three antisemitic pamphlets, and vacillated between support and denunciation of Hitler. He fled to Germany and Denmark in 1945 where he was imprisoned for a year and declared a national disgrace. He then received amnesty and returned to Paris in 1951.

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Henry Miller, William Burroughs, and Charles Bukowski have all cited him as an important influence.

Aart van Zoest in zijn inleiding: ‘De platvloersheid kan de lezer in het begin doen aarzelen: doorlezen of niet? Maar dan schittert er ineens een stijljuweel die [sic] de Céline die we bewonderen doet herkennen’ (p. 13). Wat betreft de inleiding van deze Aart van Zoest hoeft er niet geaarzeld te worden: die lezen wordt sterk afgeraden. Stijljuwelen zijn er niet in te vinden, je struikelt over de tenenkrommende passages. Er bestaat leesbevordering, er bestaat leesontmoediging. Dat laatste is hier aan de orde: de inleider hanteert tal van geleerde begrippen, als om de lezer in te wrijven dat hij niet van de straat is, maar meer dan hilarisch hoogdravende wartaal is het niet. Bijvoorbeeld: ‘Het is de stijl die zou kunnen worden aangeduid met het woord paralinguïstisch, omdat er een groot beroep wordt gedaan op het vermogen van de lezer om zich paralinguïstische, dat zijn: taalbegeleidende, tekens (intonatie, gelaatsuitdrukking, gebaren enz.) voor te stellen bij de kernachtige taalnotities die Céline hem biedt. De paralinguïstische stijl is een vorm van semiotische litotes: er wordt weinig semiotisch materiaal geboden om véél uit te drukken’ (p. 21). Niet minder verschrikkelijk: ‘In termen van pragmatiek geformuleerd: niet alleen de locutionaire, ook de perlocutionaire kracht van de liefdesbrief is groter dan van de meeste andere teksten’ (p. 11) Wie zal na de aldus ingeleide brieven nog puf hebben om ze vanaf pagina 51 (daar pas!) te gaan lezen?

Een minderheid van de brieven zijn interessant, de meerderheid is "wanneer kom je nog eens af?" 1.5/5

Un’ulteriore prova del fatto che Céline abolì le differenze tra letteratura e vita viene presentata in questo epistolario. C’è tutto: i viaggi interminabili, le passioni per la pittura e la musica, gli affetti che si esprimono ora in inviti a godere della propria giovinezza, ora in pedanti atteggiamenti protettivi, le ambigue prese di posizione e poi, però, esattamente come nei suoi romanzi, scampoli di tenerezza che ti commuovono e ti fanno mettere la quarta stella:
“Non ho mai avuto una vita assai facile […] In fondo niente potrebbe piacermi di più. È la buona vita di gaglioffo per cui son fatto […] Insomma vedi che non voglio perderti. Ti amo troppo, a modo mio – non tanto simpatico, non tanto tenero, ma molto egoistico, e perciò davvero assoluto, fedele e che sfida il tempo.”

Se dovessi generalizzare direi che anche gli uomini che sanno scrivere, quando si tratta di donne, hanno dei tratti molto comuni. Niente che non abbia già visto o già letto... ma scritto meglio.
