Rate this book
Ascent is a tale of a young boy’s coming of age in St. Louis. David is a shy type who likes writing and introspection; he lives in the shadow of his perfect football star of an older brother and the cool kids at school. His rise to maturity comes at a tragic price for his best friend; his maturity is set against the metamorphosis of a great city and entrenched society grappling with generational change.

Reading a coming of age story of a young boy, was a new adventure for me. I throughly enjoyed this self-published work from start to finish. Peeking inside of family lives in the 1960's has always intrigued me. I would be interested to find more books like this. Living through a tragedy at such a young age, is a commonality that I share with the author. How he captured the broken hearted feelings and self-loathing of the young boy brought me to tears. Now I want to know more about David's ascent into manhood with his ailing mother, perfect brother, and fresh new love. Kudos Bill!

Author does a great job at developing the character of David with all his teen-age angst and feeling "less than" when compared to his older "perfect" brother. Interesting that this book was developed around building the famous arch in St. Louis. A great read and made for a lively discussion for my book club group (Beautiful Bookends). Highly recommend!!
