Ποια είναι η κατάσταση της γυναίκας στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα; σε αυτή την ερώτηση δεν είναι εύκολο να δοθεί απάντηση. Απ' τη μια μεριά, Ελληνίδες ξακουστές, πρόσωπα μυθολογικά ή ιστορικά, όπως η Ελένη, η Πηνελόπη, η Αντιγόνη, η Μήδεια αλλά κι όπως η Ασπασία, η σύντροφος του Περικλή, η εταίρα Φρύνη, "μοντέλο" του γλύπτη Πραξιτέλη, η Διοτίμα, η ξένη από τη Μαντίνεια, συνομιλήτρια του Σωκράτη στο Συμπόσιο του Πλάτωνα. Απ' την άλλη, ένας κόσμος όπου κυριαρχούν οι αξίες του άνδρα, αξίες του επικού ήρωα, αλλά και του πολίτη-στρατιώτη της πόλης· [...] Μέσα απ' αυτή την αμφιλογία δοκιμάσαμε να κάνουμε την αποτίμησή μας, αποφεύγοντας να πέσουμε στην παγίδα του "αιώνιου θηλυκού" αλλά και μακριά από κάθε "αγωνιστικό φεμινισμό" που θα φώτιζε μόνο τις αρνητικές όψεις αυτής της κατάστασης...

About the author

Mossé was born the daughter of a wine merchant in Paris. She is the sister of Eliane Mossé , researcher in macroeconomics, and Arlette Mosse , clinical nutritionist. In the winter of 1941, during World War II and aged 16, she first read a text on liberty and democracy by Demosthenes; since then, she has dedicated her life to Greek history, never having married or having any children.

Her favourite historical subject is 4th century BCE Athens. Mossé belongs to the same school of historical thought with Jean-Pierre Vernant and Pierre Vidal-Naquet. She is professor emeritus at the University of Paris VIII. Her works have been translated into many languages including English, German, Spanish, Italian and modern Greek.

Ενδιαφέρον βιβλίο για ένα θέμα μάλλον... σκοτεινό. Η ακραία περιοριστική αντιμετώπιση των γυναικών στην κλασσική αρχαιότητα δεν μας απασχολεί και ιδιαίτερα και αυτό το βιβλίο φροντίζει να μας ενημερώσει με απλή και κατανοητή γλώσσα. Βέβαια το βιβλίο είναι αρκετά παλιό και δεν γνωρίζω αν η αρχαιολογική έρευνα έχει ανατρέψει κάποια συμπεράσματα του.

Este libro es súper interesante, pero las conclusiones del análisis no sorprenderán a nadie. La historia de Grecia clásica es una historia protagonizada y escrita por hombres. A nadie sorprenderá (imposible que sea un spoiler), que el rol de la mujer estaba primordialmente dedicado a las labores domésticas. Mención honrosa se llevan los Espartanos en este tema, pero tampoco es como para aplaudir entusiasmado. Además lo que espartanos y mujeres comparten es que ausencia casi total de autores que hayan dejado testimonio de sus formas de vida sin intermediarios (en su mayoría atenienses).

La realidad de la mujer a lo largo de la historia ha sido el sometimiento por parte del hombre de la manera más injusta imaginable, debemos apreciar el mundo en que vivimos actualmente, aplaudir los avances alcanzados y a las grandes mujeres (y hombres) que han hecho esto posible.

Lo que sí me ha sorprendido es la genial capacidad de arqueólogos e historiadores (no solo para este libro) para recabar información y obtener conclusiones. Se analizan las fuentes textos históricos, así como textos pertenecientes al mundo artístico como las las tragedias y comedias griegas y desde allí si hace un análisis de genial profundidad.

Greek translation of the book was not perfect but overall enjoyed the book and research of the author. Not very extensive but can be a good start for further research if you want to learn more about women in Ancient Greek.

For thesis purposes... quite interesting reading (for someone like me who don't like History)!
