Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

I've read a couple of these before in the platinum collections, but it's nice to have them all together in one volume. The overpowering feeling from these books is "it certainly was a different world back then". Every single sentence ends with an exclamation! You just have to take the hokey stories with a pinch of salt, and sometimes turn your eye away from the sexist undertones.

Marvel Origins The 60's
From The Ultimate Graphic Novels Collection

The stories collected here from the early 1960s changed everything. With Fantastic Four issue 1 in 1961 the modern Marvel Universe was born.

The cultural impact of the characters and stories within this book are still being felt today with billion dollar movies. Not bad for a comics company that was fading fast along with the dwindling superhero genre that was seen as washed up after success in the 1940s and almost disappearing a decade later.
The dialogue is often corny, the attitudes very much of their time and yet these vibrantly drawn tales never fail to entertain.

Concerns about the Cold War, radiation and nuclear technology seep into many of these origins.
The irradiated spider biting Peter Parker & leading to the introduction of Spider-Man. The gamma bomb explosion that covered Bruce Banner in gamma rays & combined with an homage to Frankenstein led to The Incredible Hulk. The unknown cocktail of chemicals spilled and blinding young Matt Murdoch, enhancing his other senses and giving birth to Daredevil.
The space race between America and Russia led to the fateful journey of Reed Richards & co, with the cosmic rays creating the Fantastic Four.
There's mad science with Hank Pym creating shrinking technology and cybernetic communication and voila, we have Ant Man and The Wasp. There's more science with the creation of the Iron Man armour.
Marvel's appropriation of the Norse Myths with their version of Thor provided the central character and necessary villain with Loki who's scheming inadvertently creates The Avengers and then with a nod to past successes Captain America is brought back for a new generation.
Finally there's the X-Men. Maybe the mutant genes are also born out of concern of environmental issues. This underdog team were truly ahead of their time with more diversity and appealing to anyone who felt they didn't fit in.

The vast majority is written by Stan Lee with co-creation by the artists Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Don Heck and Bill Everett. Absolute legends.

The creation of so many iconic characters in a short space of time means it's ✨✨✨✨✨ 5 stars.

I liked this graphic novel a lot because it had a very classic feel and has great action for it's time. It has some of the most popular marvel heroes and it is nice to read their origins and beginnings. It is a great story for people who like comic books.

I remember reading all these stories via UK reprints in weekly comics like Fantastic.

Almost sixty years on the excitement still leaps from the page, even if some of it is a tad dated.

The very first apperances of all the 60s Marvel superheroes. Those comics are so dated and simplistic that I really can't rate this book any higher, no matter how hard I try.

X-Men #1 – 3/10 – Fine as a curiosity to see how it all began, but the comic itself has aged tragically, including the artwork, story, dialogue, and narration.

After a series concentrating on longer, modern stories the second phase of this range (the ‘Classic’) launches with what’s essentially more of a short story collection. As the title suggests, it collects origin stories of major heroes from the early days of Marvel –the first appearances of the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Daredevil, Ant-Man and the Wasp (well, Captain America’s first modern appearance).

The stories naturally haven’t aged particularly well- everyone seems to have been swallowing the anti-communist propaganda wholesale, the Marvel world’s a hugely macho one and, particularly after the decompressed storytelling technique, it’s text intensive. There’s an intense creative energy evident though, a sense of a million ideas being thrown at a wall to see how many stick (Ant Man’s origin story, for instance, was obviously only meant to fill a few pages as a one off), the art from Kirby, Ditko and Everett is still a stylised joy, and Stan Lee’s ever bombastic badinage shamelessly sells the wilder concepts. The omission of Thor is the only strange omission, particularly given his appearance in The Avengers, but that’s promised for a later volume. Fascinating for historical significance, but hard to recommend to modern readers.

"Captain America nikdy nelže. Jdeme!"

Of course I'd seen most of this before (though surprisingly not all), but it's still nice to have most of the historical origins of the main Marvel characters gathered into one volume. Pity they couldn't get Thor's origin in there as well.

One for the completists.
