Learn all about hamsters in this fact-and-photo-filled book for young readers!
Their tiny feet scamper across cages and sprint on exercise wheels. Their little noses sniff the air and their whiskers twitch as they stuff their cheeks with food. As some of the most adorable members of the rodent family, hamsters make very popular pets. Especially in the classroom! In this nonfiction reader, kids will learn all about how to care for these cute critters.
The pictures in this book are very cute. However! Please research before buying/adopting a pet hamster. The book says "tiny hamsters can stay together in a big cage," but it doesn't tell you that they will eventually start fighting & you HAVE to separate them. Also, it says that "a wire cage is a good home for a hamster" under a picture of a Syrian hamster in a WAY TOO SMALL CAGE. They need room to run around, as well as wheels that are big enough so they don't have back problems. Please, please research the type of hamster you are getting and what kind of home and food it requires!
May 2017 - now Ben thinks hamsters are adorable and has picked out a favorite from the book. Cute, with some information about wild hamsters and how to keep them as pets.
The students in our school love hamsters so I keep my eye out for books about the little critters. Despite being simple, this book is very informative. The photos are adorable! A great choice for younger children, but parents beware...you might just find yourself in a pet shop after reading this book.
