Note: (Nicci Gerrard and Sean French also write separately.)

Nicci Gerrard was born in June 1958 in Worcestershire. After graduating with a first class honours degree in English Literature from Oxford University, she began her first job, working with emotionally disturbed children in Sheffield. In that same year she married journalist Colin Hughes.

In the early eighties she taught English Literature in Sheffield, London and Los Angeles, but moved into publishing in 1985 with the launch of Women's Review, a magazine for women on art, literature and female issues.

In 1987 Nicci had a son, Edgar, followed by a daughter, Anna, in 1988, but a year later her marriage to Colin Hughes broke down.

In 1989 she became acting literary editor at the New Statesman, before moving to the Observer, where she was deputy literary editor for five years, and then a feature writer and executive editor.

It was while she was at the New Statesman that she met Sean French.

Sean French was born in May 1959 in Bristol, to a British father and Swedish mother. He too studied English Literature at Oxford University at the same time as Nicci, also graduating with a first class degree, but their paths didn't cross until 1990. In 1981 he won Vogue magazine's Writing Talent Contest, and from 1981 to 1986 he was their theatre critic. During that time he also worked at the Sunday Times as deputy literary editor and television critic, and was the film critic for Marie Claire and deputy editor of New Society.

Sean and Nicci were married in Hackney in October 1990. Their daughters, Hadley and Molly, were born in 1991 and 1993.

By the mid-nineties Sean had had two novels published, The Imaginary Monkey and The Dreamer of Dreams, as well as numerous non-fiction books, including biographies of Jane Fonda and Brigitte Bardot.

In 1995 Nicci and Sean began work on their first joint novel and adopted the pseudonym of Nicci French. The Memory Game was published to great acclaim in 1997 followed by The Safe House (1998), Killing Me Softly (1999), Beneath the Skin (2000), The Red Room (2001), Land of the Living (2002), Secret Smile (2003), Catch Me When I Fall (2005), Losing You (2006) and Until It's Over (2008). Their latest novel together is What To Do When Someone Dies (2009).

Nicci and Sean also continue to write separately. Nicci still works as a journalist for the Observer, covering high-profile trials including those of Fred and Rose West, and Ian Huntley and Maxine Carr. Novels include Things We Knew Were True (2003), Solace (2005) and The Moment You Were Gone (2007). Sean's last novel is Start From Here (2004).

Before I get into my review, I felt it necessary to give a little background on the series this book is a part of. Nicci French is the pseudonym of writing duo Nicci Gerrard and Sean French; they have penned several books separately but collaborated to bring forth the Frieda Klein series which focuses on said main character in her role as a psychotherapist. While Dark Saturdayis technically the sixth book in the series, it reads easily as a stand alone novel and I didn’t feel left out of any pertinent information coming in this late in the series. If you are a reader in the U.K., don’t panic! This isn’t a new book you’ve missed; you likely have already read this one under it’s sister title Saturday Requiem. With all that out of the way, I feel a little more at ease jumping into the review portion of my post.

Wow! In the interest of full disclosure I feel the need to inform you of the terrible book slump I’ve been in lately. While I wasn’t hating everything I read, I knew I was in an off-season since I was picking up great books that just weren’t gripping me like they should. I was a little hesitant to start Dark Saturday; the cover was gorgeous and the blurb had me fully intrigued but I was starting to get a complex by mid-grading book after book. Also, have you met me? You know how I feel about starting a book six deep into a series! Alas, all my worries were for nothing because this was one of the best books I’ve picked up this year! I’m not sure how I’ve missed out on Frieda Klein since 2012 but I’m glad I discovered her. I was so taken with this book that I immediately went online and placed a hold on the first in the series, Blue Monday, so that I can start from the beginning and work my way back up to this book and beyond.

The blurb is vague and particular about what it allows you to know, and as such I won’t be discussing the plot in detail as to not spoil any of the great twists or turns, but just WOW! It’s been quite some time since I have been this taken by a new crime series; I find they are either action packed and lacking in the characters’ personal growth or vice versa. Not so here; Nicci French has cultivated not just one, but an entire group of characters in Klein and her posse to tickle the fancy of readers who crave gruesome, dark stories involving complex characters that really draw you in. I can’t imagine any reader who is a fan of UK crime fiction not enjoying this series! Highly, HIGHLY recommended to those looking for dark, quirky thrillers with abounding mystery and suspense. Please do yourself a favor and pick this up, regardless of where you live!

*Many thanks to the publisher for providing my copy; it was a pleasure to provide my honest thoughts here.

Dark Saturday by Nicci French is a 2017 William Morrow Paperbacks publication.

I love this series a little more with each installment!

Frieda is asked to examine an old open and shut case, to satisfy the powers that be, that the case was handled properly. But what she uncovers is a web of secrets and betrayals, which may have led to young Hannah Docherty’s conviction, and eventual incarceration in a mental institution thirteen years ago. The more time Frieda spends with Hannah, she suspects her harsh treatment has lead to her current psychosis, which has spiraled into a dangerous mental state. Was Hannah guilty of killing her family or was she the scapegoat?

The old gang is back, each making a small contribution on the way to Frieda’s search for the truth. But, there are also startling revelations about Frieda’s stalker, which has everyone even more on edge than usual.

This is another absorbing and compelling chapter in this exceptional series. I wasn’t sure what the tone would be like after the events that transpired in the last installment, but the atmosphere remained at status quo, which was a huge relief. I like the way Frieda is taking charge and becoming more comfortable with her sleuthing abilities. This is a particularly difficult case, heart wrenching is many ways, with a surprise ending that completely caught me off guard.

I can’t wait to see what’s next for Frieda and her eclectic group of family and friends!

4 stars for a dark, intricate mystery. Psychotherapist Frieda Klein is asked to meet with a woman convicted of murdering her family 13 years ago. She reluctantly agrees because Walter Levin had done her a very big favor in the past and she owes him. She does meet with Hannah Docherty and realizes that there are holes in the case against Hannah. Frieda slowly peels back the complexities of the case to find out what really happened. The real killer is desperate to keep this buried and kills more people to do so. This book 6 in the series and the relationship between Frieda and Walter was explained sufficiently for me to enjoy this book as a stand alone. However, it would probably be better to read the series in order.
The author bio explains that the author name is a pen name of Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, a husband-wife team.
I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. Thank You William Morrow/Harper Collins and the authors.

I enjoyed Monday through Thursday. Friday though, was a thorough miss for me, so I was somewhat leary about reading Saturday. To my relief this author and this series is back on track. Could not turn the pages fast enough.

Love series that feature psychiatrists, and Frieda Klein is a very interesting character. She has often in the past worked with the police, this made her many enemies and almost cost her her life. She, however, cannot see what she perceives as an injustice, and turn away. So it is in this case when she visits a woman enters n an institution, where she has been for many years. Her crime, killing her entire family. There are other forces at work her, very tension filled and suspenseful. I didn't guess the who done it or even the why done it, just love when that happens.

So a series I enjoy back on track and now I can look forward to Sunday,. Little things like this can make a readers day.

This is the first Nicci French I have read and it worked fine as a standalone. It is written by two authors. Psychotherapist Frieda Klein is an awkward personality, the reasons for which become clear in the novel. This is an intoxicating and gripping story. With concerns about an unsafe conviction, Frieda reluctantly agrees to meet Hannah Docherty and make an assessment. 13 years ago, an 18 year old Hannah was arrested for the murder of her family. She has been detained in a secure psychiatric hospital ever since.

Frieda is shocked to see the state of a heavily traumatised and, old before her time, Hannah. Hannah is a shell of a human being. Frieda comes to feel that Hannah is innocent and that there is something deeply troubling about the case against her. She feels impelled to investigate. Frieda faces implacable and ruthless forces determined to impede her progress. With death stalking the case, Frieda is up against a twisted and determined killer along with malign forces in the psychiatric hospital.

Frieda has a great circle of friends who support and aid her, like Josef, Chloe, Jack etc.. There are wonderful insights gained through Frieda's use of her psychiatric expertise with characters to uncover facts. There is illuminating social commentary as to the issue of mental health, the nature of the role of psychiatric hospitals and the debate about how effective they are. The authors skilfully create an air of menace which pervades the story throughout. A wonderful story and I am so pleased to have finally read a Nicci French book. Thanks to Penguin Michael Joseph for an ARC.

Another excellent book from the Nicci French writing duo.

I have had issues with the main character, Frieda Klein, in the course of this series but these have never stood in the way of my enjoyment of the books. Frieda has such a cold, detached personality that I am constantly amazed at how many devoted friends she attracts. They obviously see something in her that I do not. Nevertheless it is her detachment and stubborness which make her so good at her job, especially when she is assisting the police.

In Saturday Requiem, book six in the series, Frieda is attempting to prove that a young woman has been wrongfully convicted of murder and to discover the true culprit. At the same time she has personal issues with Dean Reeve who has been causing her huge problems throughout the series. Spooky, scary problems!

The pages in this book just turned themselves and I would have read it in one sitting if life had allowed. Looking forward now to reading book seven. I expect this one to be the Book of Dean with some kind of explosive finale! Can't wait:)

UPDATE:

What is important in a good crime story ,is the way the facts are presented, so that the reader (if careful and clever) can identify "who did it". It is also fundamental that people involved in the story are elements for the investigation .When everything ( including the motive and the culprit )is revealed in the last ten pages, through the inexplicable ingenious guessing of the heroin , the "product" is weak.

When I was given the chance to read the latest book in the Freida Klein series by thriller writing duo Nicci French I jumped at it.
In this latest book Frieda Klein reluctantly faces a case that tests her to her very limits.Thirteen years ago eighteen year old Hannah Docherty was arrested for the brutal murder of her family. It was an open and shut case and Hannah's been incarcerated in a secure hospital ever since. When psychotherapist Frieda Klein is asked to meet Hannah and give her assessment of her she reluctantly agrees. What she finds horrifies her. Hannah has become a tragic figure, old before her time. And Frieda is haunted by the thought that Hannah might be as much of a victim as her family; that something wasn't right all those years ago. And as Hannah's case takes hold of her, Frieda soon begins to realise that she's up against someone who'll go to any lengths to protect themselves

Another excellent novel in this series and I can't wait to read the next one.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Penguin UK for supply me with a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

4.5 rounded up! Definitely 1 of my favorite series ever!! Each book is so good in its own right, & I just LOVE the dysfunctional but supportive clan we’ve gotten to know so well. I only have 2 left & as excited as I am to read the finale, I’m already in mourning! As far as this story in particular, it was 1 of my favorites. The “mystery” aspect was so good.. My mind was racing & I was hanging on every word (especially while in the hospital with Hannah!😳) As always Frieda is outstanding & continues to impress me. I don’t know how these authors have come up with such new & captivating stories, while keeping with the background narrative & threats that run throughout the series. Truly impressive! I’d definitely recommend this, but please start at the beginning so you can properly get to know everyone & watch them evolve.. It feels so authentic & has been such a lovely addition to this “crime” series!

This series gets darker, and the tension in the master story thread builds.

There is a slight depressing effect from reading this series in a compressed way, but not so as I would want not to read them. The characters and world are so three dimensional and convincing and the stories overall so expertly constructed.

My only gripe, aside from the persistent theme of kids kids all the mistreated malfunctioning kids in jeopardy, are the two nemeses, who seem slightly cartoonishly evil, and thus less believable than I would like, give. They are high ranking professionals who, ok, are as capable of grossly immature and obtuse evil as the next guy, but I think it’s a little flat and overdone.

These two issues, which could rankle in the hands of less capable authors, are things I accept in return for unusual quality and sophistication overall for a genre series, and for my affection for the complex, unusual heroine.

This book ended with a big cliffhanger. Ack. I had to immediately preorder the next in the series (which I think is supposed to end after the next one or two).

The plot for this novel did wrap up in this book. But the underlying series kicked into high gear at the end, as a setup for the next title.

So, I started this one, but I need to take a break. I requested it via Librarything having heard good things about Nicci French, but didn't realize a) this was part of series and b) Nicci French is a pseudonym for a writing team: picking up mid-series and writing teams both being pet peeves of mine. I'm sure this is probably a really good mystery, but in the beginning of the novel, I felt lost by and out of place trying to figure out what clearly happened in previous novels. I want to pick this up again at some point (maybe start the series), but my to-read pile is so big right now that I just don't feel like playing catch-up at the moment...

I have read all the Nicci French books that were not in the Frieda Kline series and found them interesting and straightforward. Then I tried the Kline series and even though I rather enjoyed #1 and #2, this one bordered on the ridiculous.

I am not going to outline the story here which would be next to impossible but instead give my opinion as to why this book left me cold. There is way too much going on here as characters and situations from other Kline books keep popping up for no particular reason and throw the main story off track. Kline's personality has morphed into an unlikable, bitchy character. Why she gets involved in this particular cold case is unclear and why she thinks the convicted murderer is innocent is even more confusing. One of her friends has an affair and another gets cancer.....neither situation adds anything to the main plot and are only mentioned once and then dropped. She ruins the lives of several innocent people with her investigation and seems to feel no remorse. And the denouement left me shaking my head in disbelief.

I know I am in the minority on this entry in an otherwise rather interesting series......but it was as if someone else other than Nicci French (a husband and wife writing team) authored it. Most unsatisfactory.

The imaginary green light was set to go-go go read, read, read, my light didn't turn red to stop. Hannah was a troubled dysfunctional teenager, she had quarrelled with her family violently in public. Her stepfather, Aidan her mother and her younger brother. Rory. All three had been beaten to death with a claw hammer. When the police turned up at the terrible scene their duty was to make sense of it. Hannah was arrested for murdering her family. After nine years of Hannah in hospital she had changed a lot she had become violent, more unhappy and more disturbed. The question is did Hannah Docherty kill her family. If you have read IF SHE DID IT by Jessica Treadway then you will love reading Saturday Requiem by Nicci French. If you have not read either books I highly recommend reading both.

One of the best I've read in a while. I jumped into this series at #6 (and had no difficulty doing so just regret that I did not know of this series since day 1) and loved every minute although I truly wish I had not been reading the last page at 1 a.m.....
Frieda Klein is a terrific heroine, a psychotherapist with terrific observational skills and insights into people (reminded me of the t.v. show the Mentalist but less gimmicky). She is tasked with interviewing a girl who has been institutionalized for murdering her family 13 years prior. As you would expect, the case begins to unravel. At the same time Klein's own nightmare--a stalker who framed her for murder in the past, which I assume is from previous books, becomes an issue again.
This is really brilliantly written and this husband and wife writing pair do an excellent job of unfolding the plot with maximum tension. Fans of M J Arlidge's Helen Grace will enjoy this series.

“I thought you and me were going to end up sharing a cell together. And then you almost got killed. So when you said you were working for the police again, I half assumed – or hoped – you were making a really bad joke.”
- Chloë

——

“I’m not really interested in the chemistry of the brain – in neurons and synapses, I mean, I’ve studied it and read about it. I’m interested in how behaviour originates in experience, memory, trauma.”
- Frieda Klein

——

“The problem is that going missing is a bit of a philosophical problem. There are people who run away, who move away, who escape, who get bored, who go on holiday and stay there. They fall in love and run off with someone, they fall out of love and run off to escape someone. They are abused teenagers or persecuted gays or girls forced into marriage. They’re men having mid-life crises or wives tired of the husbands’ mid-life crises. They are going abroad on a gap year or they are going abroad to join an Islamist army or they are just emigrating.
And somewhere in all that, there are a few real missing people: people in danger, criminals on the run, Alzheimer’s patients gone wandering, lost children. That’s the problem.”
- Detective Chief Inspector Isobel Sharpe

——

“Therapists start to identify with their patients – they want to be liked by them, they almost want to become their friends. They can delude themselves that getting emotionally close to their patients is a way of helping them.”

3.5/5

Dark Saturday, the sixth novel written by Nicci French, a British husband and wife writing team, in their series about psychotherapist Frieda Klein. Frieda has worked with the police in the past and is drawn in again, almost against her will, by an administrator very high up in the police department to evaluate the status of one Hannah Docherty. Hannah had been convicted thirteen years ago, when she was eighteen, of murdering her parents and younger brother. She has been institutionalized ever since in a hospital for the criminally insane. Frieda finds Hannah to be deeply disturbed, but she as thinks she might be a collateral victim of the shocking murders rather than their perpetrator, Frieda decides to get to the bottom of the case.

Through a series of twists and turns, Frieda seeks to uncover what the truth might be, while she is assisted by her usual group of friends and supporters. Lots of suspense all the way through and a surprise ending. As always, I will not mention plot, because if I did, what would be left for you? And also as always, I urge you to read this series in order as there are developments with all characters throughout the series. A more knowledgeable reader will be a happier reader. There is a seventh novel out called Sunday Silence and I hear an eighth is in the works. For now I have had enough of the Frieda Klein books (they are kind of similar to each other) and am reading other things, but I know I will get back to these last two some time in the year or two ahead.

Excellent - but now I NEED the next book :)

My View:
Could this series can any better? I dont think so.

This read was everything you might want in a psychological thriller – a taut narrative, great characterisations, tension, tension tension and the incredibly delicious feeling of dread the reader has as they turn each page, always expecting the worse, their heads filled with theories and consequences and empathy for the incarcerated anti-hero.

Frieda Klein is at her investigative best! The closer Frieda gets to solving this mystery the more dangerous life becomes – for her and those around her. Loved loved LOVED IT!

Could this series can any better? Surprise me Nicci French.

(I have one niggling worry – could the next book be the last in the series? I hope not)

Forgotten how great Nicci French is, as I really enjoyed this.
Apparently the 6th book in the series (the title is a slight clue), but it worked really well as a standalone story.

Must read the others!
