Ahoy there me mateys! Okay with a title like that how could I not be intrigued? Would this novella finally settle the grand debate once for all: octopi or octopuses? And what exactly does an octopus pirate look like?

I was intrigued. The story is set in the Victorian era wherein the pregnant wife of a ship's captain is washed overboard. Miraculously, the baby survives and is washed to the shore of a Scottish island. An elderly solitary nun named Mary discovers him and vows that he is a gift from God for her to raise. She loves young Coco despite his so-called deformities and they form a strong bond.

The set-up to the story and the early years detailing Coco's life on the island were the highlights of the story for me. Now don't get me wrong, Coco goes adventuring and joins the circus and starts to learn to become a pirate. Arrrr! But the simplicity of Coco's early years were me favorite part of the book. The relationship between Mary and Coco was heartening even fer this salty Captain.

Once Coco is forced to leave the island, we add in a larger cast of characters. Ye see the circus actually does have some magical talent. Whether it is a mermaid, a teleporter, or even Coco with his own burgeoning magical discoveries, life gets a little more complicated. Plots are hatched to travel back in time to fight as pirates. Plots are hatched to harm Coco.

The plot and motivations fer the whys and hows are very light. However awesome and fun Coco is, he is not really in charge of his destiny in this installment and luck seems to direct his path. Though the next book seems set-up for him to begin to truly stand on his own and I do believe I shall partake of that adventure.

And the octopus of the title? Coco's special relationship with octopuses needs to be read about and not spoiled. So if ye like octopi then nab a copy and tell me what ye think . . .

A really great read. Considering it's a YA novella, I really enjoyed it. It certainly captivated me. It speeds along at breakneck pace and happily drags you with it. You learn and are enthralled by Coco's past, how he got to where he is today, the adventures he has along the way and how he gathers a circle of true friends about himself. A really great book, thank you Jane.

About the book:

Octopus Pirate is a time-travelling steampunk tale set in the Victorian period. It's the story of a foundling who discovers he has unusual talents, such as camouflage, squishing into small spaces and the ability to communicate with octopuses! Follow Coco on his adventure to become a pirate.

My thoughts:

You first meet Coco as a baby and see him grow up, he is an interesting character due to his special skills. He is likeable and I definitely found myself intrigued by his character.

The plot is straightforward and managed to keep my interest without my mind wandering. I liked that you saw Coco grow up throughout the book. I had to keep reading to find out what would happen to him next.

Overall:

I don't normally read this genre but the synopsis caught my attention and I am really glad it did. There is plenty of adventure as we follow Coco growing up. All of the characters brought something to the story. I think the length of the book was quite good, not too long or short.

Four stars from me!

Thank you to Jane Yates for kindly sending me a copy to read and review.

A most unusual story about a boy born at sea, washed ashore on an island, raised by a retired nun among goats and cats only to be again orphaned, ran away to the circus where he was exploited as a freak. Fleeing the circus he joins in a plan to assemble a ship and crew to go back in time and live the pirates life. And oh yeah, he's part octopus! Other than that, pretty much the normal steampunk, time traveling fare.

The book is the first in what promises to be an interesting saga. Highly original story, a bit complex at time which slows the pace a tad as there is a lot of foundation to be laid building a saga about an octopus pirate who travels through time. As one could well expect. Well worth sticking with it to the end!

This book was a delight to read.

Octopus Pirate by J. Yates

I went on an adventure with young Coco; watching him be born at sea on a floating bed of seaweed, on to his solitary upbringing at the deserted Monastery island, and then off to the circus complete with clowns, sideshow freaks, knife-throwers, elephants, and . . . time travel.

If you've ever dreamed of running away to join the circus, or travelling back in time to fight pirates on the high seas, then this is the book for you. Coco is one extraordinary boy.

I loved it!

Three cheers for Jane Yates, who has brought us another wonderful story. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book and can’t wait to read the next one. What I appreciated most about this book is the wonderful plot and the character descriptions throughout. It was as easy for me to picture the story as if I were watching a movie. There are quiet moments in the plot that establish the characters in their world as well as emotion filled scenes. Coco is a likeable and interesting main character and his story is a fascinating one. He can be described as kind, hard working, and curious. The supporting cast of characters fills out the story nicely and provides tension and excitement.

Unconventional way of thinking - like octopuses!

On the whole, I do love reading such adventure stories for young people because we all stay young at heart throughout our lives.
What I find amazing in this author's books, though, is first of all her unmatched language and then her illustrations.
Sometimes, we need to reevaluate our understanding of the world around us and then try not to impose our own value judgements on others, especially when assuming high moral or/and human standpoint.
What I want to say is that I found loads of enlightening thoughts, unconventional viewpoints and intriguing plots, settings and characters while reading this lovely book.

Having read and loved Jane Yates's previous novel (Garden) I sat and read Octopus Pirate in admiration. Jane Yates has produced a prolific and entertaining story that is emotional, kind, and full of genuine fun. Coco is a freak, an outcast - or so he thinks so, especially as he joins a circus because of his strange tentacles on his neck, but he soon begins to see he has so much to offer the world.

In the beginning, I especially loved the relationship between Coco and his adoptive guardian Mary. The way in which Yates writes this slightly steampunk novel is that of a fable. It captures your heart along the way, especially as you see Coco come of age - which is really what this novel is all about. It is obvious that the author has written this book with much love - its somewhat naive telling is simply addictive. Octopus Pirate made me smile from start to finish, and is perfect for almost any age, but I secretly think adults will love this a tad bit more. It made for a refreshing read.

This book begins the tale of Pinocchio, Coco for short. His story unfolds quickly to get us into the real meat of the story. He was born at sea when the wife of a ship captain falls overboard into the turbulent waters. He was rescued on his mat of seaweed by a nearby octopus and raised by a nun. As a accident claims the life of the nun, he is sent off to the church to be educated. He is a very unique little boy and ends up running away to protect his uniqueness, in part learning even more about his himself. He joins the circus and makes great friends, but has to flee there as well because of what he is. He and his friends have plans up there sleeves though and thanks to meeting a rich painter, it sees all of these plans may actually reach fruition. I'm ready for book two. :D

Coco was born at sea, literally on a seaweed mat in the middle of the ocean. He was saved by an octopus and delivered to an island. And so begins an incredible story that I loved reading! This story is geared to young adults but ass an old adult I enjoyed it thoroughly. Coco finds himself at odds with life at a young age and has to develop coping skills along the way. He is different and others notice. He learns to care for himself and follow his own path.
I can't wait to get this story to my granddaughter who also considers herself different!

Octopus Pirate by Jane Yates is a riveting time-traveling steampunk story. I like the cover. I gave it five stars.

Catherine's husband, Horace is the new captain of a cruise ship, The Empress. She's aboard but feeling ill because of her pregnancy & the waves rocking the ship. She was revolted by the passengers drinking the free champagne.

She went to stand by herself & fell overboard.

Four hours later, her husband realized she was missing after the ship was searched. He turned back to search for her. He gave up after a week.

Catherine delivered her baby but didn't survive. The clump of seaweed was propelled to shore by an octopus.

A retired nun, Mary, found the baby & named him Coco. After fifteen years she began to age quickly.

After she died, Mother Superior came to take Coco to an orphanage. The other children called him 'freak' & made fun of him.

The Doctor was to perform surgery to remove Coco's 'tubes' on the back of his neck. To avoid this, Coco ran away & joined the circus.

There he didn't feel out of place & made friends.

"The Ringmaster had new posters printed, proclaiming Coco ‘The Octopus Boy,’ as the star attraction and Coco began to feel under some strain with the added extra pressure." His new friend Greg helped him improve his performance.

He appreciated his friendships with Greg, Eric & Mack. They had plans to travel to the past & interact with pirates. Mack was married to Michelle, the mermaid.

They assembled a crew to travel into the past as pirates. Coco’s adventures continue in Book II, Time and Tide. I look forward to reading them.

"An Advanced Review Copy Provided by the Author in Exchange for an Honest Review."

3.5 Star Rating

The story was written around the orphan boy who named "COCO". Heart touching story. Coco's birth & life was almost a tragedy from the beginning of the story. Sometimes I felt sickening about the story. That "tube thing" around back of the Coco's neck & the Octopus arm was really awful. Nonetheless, I managed to read the book until the end.
I think this narrative is same like to a prologue of the story. The story indicate how were the Coco & his friends getting ready for their real, time traveling pirate adventure. Any of the pirate fights weren't happen so far. Narrative described only the stuff they prepared for their adventure & how they ready for it. That's why I'm indicate the story as a prologue. I hope, I'll be able to read full of dangerous time traveling adventures from the second book of the series. Overall, the story was good though if it had fights & real pirate adventures as suitable for the title "Octopus Pirate", I would admire the book more than now.

Octopus Pirate by Jane Yates

I was given a copy of this book to read in return for an honest review.

The story is about a boy named Coco born at sea with special abilities and is found and brought up by a nun on an island. When the nun dies, Coco has to leave the Island to live on the main land, and his journey starts where he will meet great friends, those not so friendly and out to exploit him and the start of a great plan and adventure to become pirates and travel back in time to fight with real ones.

The story is told in a narrated style and there are a few grammatical errors and a few words out of sync, thought this does not distract from this lovely story. I love the locations, details and how it’s all described in this book and if you have read Janes Paradox Child series books, you will find some flavours from them injected into this book.

The story is lovely short read and a great filler book; if you are like me, one of those that love’s reading book after book and you just need that something different between novels to break it up, then this is a great story to do that job.

Was fortunate enough to receive this as a Goodreads Giveaway winner.

This is a wonderfully odd little gem of a book. The premise and characters have a great quirkiness to them, and the style of writing has the tone of a folk tale being recounted by a friend, rather than a traditional approach. For such a short book, one gets easily drawn into the story and characters and the pacing is great to keep the reader engaged. I look forward to reading the continuing adventures of Coco the Octopus Pirate!

I loved this book! Coco is a strong character who remains true to who he is as a person. Octopus Pirate is very inclusive of the unique differences and diversity people face throughout their lives. This book showcases challenges that come from being different, and how true friendship does not look at outward appearance.

This book has so many good lessons in it that could better educate people.

Well Done! I will definitely be looking to purchase this book for the Library.

A pleasant enough read, not too dark. A more interesting book cover would be good. The crew does not commit any acts of piracy in this story. The story ends in an odd way.

It looks harsh giving this two stars, but that, as per Goodreads is classed as 'ok' which is what I think this book/story is.

In the book we follow the life of Coco, where various tragedies befall him from the offset of his life, from the beginning his mother falling off a ship and drowning as giving birth to him, to being rescued by an Octopus and placed in safety of a nun on an island. And to avoid too many spoilers more tragedies follow as young Coco has to survive life with some deformities that make him stand out but likewise interesting and special.

So what's the problem. Well this is a nice, straight forward story that does dash along at some pace and I think that's partly my problem with it and why I didn't buy into it as much as others. Yes, there is the odd grammatical error but the writing does feel rushed to me as the author, I suspect, is in a rush to get her ideas down on paper. And there are a lot of ideas: Tragedies, Pinocchio style character, deformities with special abilities, steam punk, time travel, monsters, pirates and all clearly building up to the next book.

So a nice, little heart warming story, straight forwardly written with a tad to much crammed into it for my liking.

Coco was born in the sea, son of a mother who accidentally fell overboard. After she dies, an octopus brings him to an nun living on a remote island. But when the nun dies, he must find his own way in the world.

The book is OK - the writing is on the dry, but easy to read side. I would call it more of a young adult/middle school level. The format of the book was hard to read - small words and spaces between paragraphs. it could really use a better printing.

*I got this book through GoodRead's Giveaways - an excellent source of interesting books!

This is a well written short novel, full of original ideas and good prompts to make a captivating story. In the end, this book leaves you wanting for more: to know how the story goes on (please write the sequel :) ), but also for more precise descriptions and longer dialogues, as often there is the impression that the author glosses quicky over some parts to get through her point. However, since her writing is enjoyable and the story is intriguing, we could very well handle more pages to dive into the atmosphere and the characters of the book. Looking forward to read the next one!

I was pleased to have won this book in a recent Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

A wonderful story and totally different from what I usually read. My only concern is the very small print and although I was just about able read without a problem, some may find it hard on the eyes. That aside, I do recommend.

This book is an enjoyable read which has an interesting and unique story but extremely long chapters and quite a few editing issues were frustrating for me (I understand the author is dyslexic so do allow for some little mistakes but a good editor could help here).

Overall a good read and I look forward to book 2

The ending surprised me

This is another creatively written book by Jane Yates. I first found Jane's books in the Paradox Child series. I found them unique and interesting. Then I read Garden. I loved it. It played out the original Secret Garden story in a modern, futuristic setting. Octopus Pirate is another winner. From the beginning it captivated my interest. A baby born in the sea, rescued by an octopus and reared by a nun. I liked all the facets of this book. From the initial story about his mom falling overboard to the island where he was raised with goats and cats. I especially liked the way Jane weaves his transformation into an other worldly type creature, yet he still retains his own identity. From life in a freak show at the circus to the beginning of pirate adventures, this story will make you want to read more.
