This was a really good read. I enjoyed the characters a lot. There were twists, courage, strength, growth, humor, a bit of suspense, some action, time-travel, emotions, and a good HEA. This book kept me interested and the I loved getting to know the characters. A really great book that I just hadn't gotten to yet but should have a lot sooner. It was buried treasure in my freebie to-reads. I'll definitely look for more by this author. Enjoy!

What if you glimpsed your soul mate in another century? Travel back through time as Deanna introduces your to the possibility of romance between an unlikely pair: a 20th-century woman and a proud warrior from an ancient Native American tribe. Love knows no boundaries in Deanna's time-travel romance, Never Surrender.

{UPDATE 09.07.2014 } I just read this for the second time and have to say, Taima and Kate's love story is still one of my favorites. Ms. Jewel knows how to weave a story, create characters that you fall in love with, and forget to eat dinner.

First off I'd like to acknowledge and thank Deanna Jewel for sending me an autographed copy that I won from a First Reads contest here at Goodreads. I wasn't expecting all of the swag that came with it - chapstick, bookmarks that are signed and post-its and, really it was exciting to open up what I thought was just a book. I've also had the pleasure of exchanging emails with Ms. Jewel and look forward to reading her upcoming books.

I am one of those people who will read a book about Native Americans every so often, but nothing that I have read in the past can match Never Surrender. I loved Taima as the lead male. He was everything the head of a Native American clan should be - tough, wise, compassionate, thoughtful, friendly, a disciplinarian, etc. etc. Kate sometimes got on my nerves, but that's probably because I identify with her personality type: defiant, questioning, obstinate, fiercely loyal, and capable of love. I really, really wish she would have listened first, reacted later, but in true female form she always did what she felt was right in the moment.

Kelee stole my heart as Taima's son. Such a sweet, strong boy! Aiyana was someone I wasn't overly fond of at first, but once I got to know her I absolutely adored her and her husband Ahanu. I really hope to read more about them in the future.

One thing that I liked most about this story is that there wasn't a lot of nonsense about time travel - which is a secondary theme - or Kate trying to make people believe; she appeared one day during a raid and Taima took her. His father knew that she'd be there and so it was. I love how there were just hints of the terror that was faced during that time in history. Sorry, but I have a weak stomach and a very vivid imagination, I can only handle so much of people being murdered!

Anyway, I recommend this to anyone and everyone who likes historical romance, time travel, and Native American lore. And even if you're not sure you like any of them, read it anyway. Ms. Jewel knows how to weave a story as impressive as the moccasins that Natives wear on their feet.

Never Surrender is a romance with time-travel , destined soul mates, and Native American mythology all tied together that had the bare bones of a story that I wanted to love, but unfortunately, suffers from plot holes and inconsistencies that bothered me enough that it was difficult for me to finish this novel.

For example:
*Kate, a modern (1997) American woman, continually refers to her Indian captors as "savages" throughout most of the book. I could have overlooked that terminology if Kate believed she belonged in 1835 Wyoming raised with the particular mindset of whites from that era. But she doesn't--she knows she is from the future! A person who grew up in modern America knowing the history of Native Americans would use some other modern choice epithets. Especially since she manages a Natural History museum in Pittsburgh, specifically the Native American section! That bothered me every time I read it. And I saw that word many, many times. I felt that I was reading a pre-politically correct bodice ripper penned in the 1970's. (Yes, I'm that old.)

*Which brings me to my next point of contention: Kate's memory of the future. The author side-steps Kate having the whole time-travel, "I'm really a gal from the 20th century—you gotta believe me", confrontation with the hero, by giving her headache-inducing "visions" of her modern life. So, if that's the case, then Kate would NOT realize she was from the future...right? She would think she's an 1830's gal with a head trauma. But yet, both she and the hero's shaman father know she is from the future. The handling just felt clunky and confusing to me.

I actually walked away from this book a couple times in aggravation, but came back because, in essence, it is a good basic story. I am a sucker for anything with time-travel or hunky Native Americans. This book had them both---hot damn! If the time-travel aspect had been more deftly handled, I would have LOVED and highly recommended this book. Outside of those issues, it is filled with interesting people and details that pulled me back to the story. I'm attributing the problems to "new writer learning curve". I give this book 2 ½ stars.

This book grabbed me from the beginning. I had never read this type of genre before and my oh my it did make me blush and tingle in all the right places. I was particularly captivated by the Native American tribe, their surroundings and customs and of course, Taima who certainly filtered into my dreams! I struggled with Kate a little. Her story, her demeanor, her attitude got a bit grating as she was forced into remaining with the tribe. Her actions I could understand, to a point, however, I have to agree with other reviews, in that, calling the Native American, 'Savage' got a bit annoying. The ending seemed to finish quite abruptly and unexpectantly, but I think this is the first book in a series? I generally read stand alone books due to time contraints, so I'm not sure how I feel about this.
All in all, a nice, sexy, lusty step into this genre.

Kate goes out west to try to figure out her visions. When she gets there she thinks she sees the guy from her vision, but when she accidentally hits her head she travels back in time. Taima saves Kate from the Blackfoot. When Kate goes back to Taima's tribe she finds out that Taima can speak english and so can other tribe members. Taima and Kate are trying to find their way when the Blackfoot comes back. They also have to deal with one of the tribe. It was very interesting learning a lot of facts! Kate has a big adventure and learns a lot!

I like historical books, Native American Lore, time travel, and magic. This book had it all. It was a good read... kept me interested and coming back as the characters are likable. My only reason for a 4 is it was a bit too "Harlequin Romance" for me in the love scenes parts. I would definitely recommend it as a good energy, forward moving fictional story that holds interest. I read on vacation when a book that is fun and does not take deep thought is required for the relaxation mode

Romance is one of those genres that captures your soul and doesn't let go - just like this story about a 20th-century woman and her 19th-century warrior. Time has no boundaries and Deanna Jewel has embelished that concept, strenthening the hope for soul mates across centuries. This is an award-winning romance novel, and it shows.
