This started a bit slow for me as I tried to understand Rue's frame of mind and her grasp of magic. But as the story progressed and more than one murder happened on campus, I was thoroughly involved in Rue, her relationship with her mother, and her take on her changing circumstances within the college community. I definitely want to the next book in this series to find out what happens next.
This spin off of an earlier series is so much better than the original that it is like night and day. It is of the unsuspecting heir to great power variety but unlike most of the genre, this heir is neither weak nor unprepared. To say more would be a spoiler. I am looking forward to the next entry in the series.
Rue wants to go to a witch’s college on the east coast in Connecticut but he mother wants he to stay at home and go to the college there in Washington State. She leaves for college early to get away from her mother. She likes to run at night. On her first night’s she one shoots magic at her that has a black flame. A week later a body of a female is found. Her roommate finally shows up and later she’s killed. She learns Chrysie is her cousin and she’s a Hollow. They think she killed Chrysie like her mom killed Hollows when she was there. Her family is one of the founding families. The Presidium, the witch police, shows up and they think Rue killed Chrysie. She calls her mother who makes it so she can’t answer anymore questions until her Presidium Protector can get there. Her mother tells her she’s the heir to Hollow House and it has been sealed since she left the college twenty years ago. Rue goes to see Dr. Hollow and tells him she wants to open Hollow House. If the house opens for her then she’s the heir. A really good murder mystery.
I got this book as a part of a free promotion and decided to give it a read one evening. Now I'm going to have to make sure that I get the others in this series as soon as possible.
Veruca "Rue" is a wonderful protagonist who is funny, determined, and self-effacing. I instantly fell in love with her voice and unique outlook on the situations in which she finds herself.
The only reason this isn't five stars is the fact that, while the reader is told how horrible a person Rue's mother is, we never really see it. Rue and her sister comment on their mother's behavior, using the term "super-villain" more than once. And the reaction from other characters indicates that same opinion is shared by anyone in the know. However, the brief moments we actually see her, Rue's mother doesn't seem any more horrendous than the average non-witch mother.
All in all, though, this is a great read and I highly recommend it if you're a fan of Charlaine Harris and writers in that vein.
This was my first foray into Amanda A Allen's book and it was a positive one. The story was engaging and I followed up with the rest of the books in the series. There are however many problems with the text that could be easily fixed with a good proofreading/editing. Spelling errors, incorrect words, and some outright bloopers really take away from the enjoyment of the story for me. It made it more difficult to sail through it and really get lost in it. But that aside, I would recomment the series and I plan to check out other books by this author.
Rue thought she was getting one up on her super- villain jackal she-beast of a mom, Autumn. But boy was she wrong. It seems that she has walked into a piece of Hallow Legacy, without a warning.
When Hallows start dropping like flies and she is the main suspect she calls in the best defense she can. Her super- villain jackal she-beast of a mother.
In the blink of an eye Rue is being forced to push her powers to the limits and lucky for her she is gaining a great circle of friends because she is going to need them
Get ready for a cozy mystery filled with Supernatural 101.
Rue is a witch off to a paranormal college and finds herself targeted my a killer. She has a complicated relationship with her mother and mom has secrets. This book is surprisingly deep especially for a cozy mystery with truths that translates to real life. I have daughters Rue's age and felt it spoke to the complicated relations of mothers and daughters. I have to add that this book is laugh out loud funny and full of snark that makes me want roll my eyes at my own daughters.
First Book in a series by Amanda A Allen (Beth Byers). Once I find a good Writer I read through all the books available. I found that B.B., is the alter ego of Amanda A Allen. Yay! More books to read. I read this last night, I thought it was about the relationship between Witch Mother and Daughter(s) and Hi jinks in when the daughter goes to College, but it was so much more. This book was entertaining and fast paced. A very enjoyable read with several books in the series I can’t wait to read.
Every book I read by Amanda has been enjoyable. Great for those days when I need to shut down. I can usually finish in a lazy Sunday the whole book. I love all the characters and the story carries you along perfectly.
I confess,I get bored quickly and lately have been just heading to the end to find out “who done it” with so many other authors. But never with Amanda or Beth Beyers her other author name.
Imagine being raised by a very nasty, controlling and exacting witch of a mother. Then when you are ready for college, she tries to "encourage" you to her old school. Off course rebellious teenagers don't want to go where there parents have still some influence. However, the scholarship program restrictions that you didn't know before you accept, well that and the murders, just makes you rethink your decision.
I enjoyed this book and it was a decent start to what I hope is a great series. The writing was sometimes stilted and choppy with Rue's thoughts scattered, so it was hard to read in places. Rue also repeated a lot of things but overall, a good start.
A magical book that keep me on pi s and needles. Rue and her group of friends feel their way around magic as they form a bond. Evil tries to take over but the end will surprise ypu
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one but wow what a cute tale. Learning that life is worse and better than you thought and life’s lessons taught by a parent really do help can be hard to learn but in this case truly allow you to live to fight another day.
This book switches from first person to third person frequently --sometimes in the same paragraph. Very distracting. I highly recommend a professional editor.
Spooky, college, real students, witches, & lots of murder And of course whose the one! Take your pick & make your guess. You'll probably be as wrong as I was!!
This is the first time reading this author and I loved this book. The main character is Rue, a witch going away to witch college. She is going to a school her mother didn't want her to go to and almost as soon as she gets there strange things start to happen to her. When her roommate gets murdered and Rue is accused, she calls Mom for help and begins to find out all kinds of things about her mother and her mother family who were also murdered right there. This was a hard book to put down and I look forward to reading more by this author.
