“You’d better hope nine hundred fifty million hindus are wrong.”
“Why?”
“Because karma can be a bitch.”

The things I enjoy most about this series all involve the protagonist. She is Indian, bi-sexual, and has anxiety and OCD. These are all genuinely a part of who she is. I appreciate the way her disorders were portrayed and feel they were handled well.
They say time heals all wounds, but the truth is it isn’t time, it’s that the memories dull so they can’t cut you anymore.

After the way the first book ended, you just know you are in for a game of deception if Kalah is ever going to prove what really happened. (Here is where I assume you’ve at least read the first book because the synopsis of this book gives the ending away). Kalah is stuck pretending to be Brit’s best friend in order to prove Beth’s death wasn’t an accident, all the while trying to grieve her friend. It’s the only hope she has to catch Brit in her web of lies. Unfortunately, it won’t be easy. Brit always seems to be a few steps ahead.
Sometimes you had to risk yourself because what you were trying to do was worth that risk, that damage. It’s like chemotherapy: sometimes you need to make yourself sicker to have chance of getting better.

I enjoyed the twists the story took in Avenged. By route, it became a bit more of a thriller than a mystery. I guess you could say I enjoyed this one more than Vanished. The writing was stronger. And the deeper exploration of Brit’s character was intriguing. Overall, the series was fun and fast-paced. Fans of Pretty Little Liars would enjoy it.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to HarperCollins and Edelweiss.)

“I don’t worry about their feelings and instead focus on how they’re like a puzzle I need to solve to get what I want.”

This was an interesting sequel, and I was pleased with the way things ended.

Kalah had a rough time in this book, but continued to try and bring what really happened to light, even when it became clear that Brit had a plan for everything. I didn’t blame her for feeling a bit powerless though, when everything seemed to go the way Brit wanted it to.

“Brit was teaching me a lesson. Now I had to figure out how to teach her one.”

The storyline in this was about Kalah trying to find a way to get people to listen to her, and to investigate Beth’s death further, even when things started to spiral out of control, and Brit seemingly could do no wrong. The pace in this was a bit slow in places, but the ending did make up for that a bit. I wouldn’t say this was as good as the first book in the series though.

I didn’t even realize this was a sequel. I mean, it seemed like there was a lot of questions for what happened to get these girls where they started. It still read like a good thriller. I am happy to report that I still enjoyed this book. So even though this isn’t a stand-alone, I still enjoyed it as one.

Kalah is in a bad spot throughout most of this story. I felt so much angst for her. Brit is back and Kalah is very angry she got away with it. Not only that, but with Beth gone, Brit is free to rule and has people falling over to worship her. Kalah remains as Brits very best friend, but she has a plan. Unfortunately, Brit is one step ahead of her most of the time. Kalah lies to get to the truth.

I felt so bad for Kalah. I think most girls will agree that being in someone’s shadow is not fun. Faking that you agree with someone all the time gets old really fast. Kalah does a stellar job of playing along with Brit. She has the patience of a saint waiting for Brit to trip up. I didn’t agree with her methods, but I have to admire the way she went about keeping her enemy close.

Kalah has an array of things working against her in this story. First, everyone thinks she loves Brit. Brit goes out of her way to enact revenge and Kalah has to go along with it so she can try to get her own revenge. This makes Kalah look horrible. Kalah underestimates Brit. Kalah is a bit OCD and her anxiety is still a secret a carries. Her history is not exactly making her look trustworthy. Kalah has to grow a lot through this story.

The only thing that isn’t completely awesome about this story is the believable factor. I am one to let the story take me, so I enjoy this escape from reality. I know some may have issues with how she handles her meds, and the advice she doesn’t take from people. This is fiction but I agree it might be sending the wrong message to people on medication.

All in all, I just love this story of revenge. The buildup kept my rapt attention and the ending was just about picture perfect. I read this whole book in one day. I am really sad that I missed out on book one from this series, but I will be looking out for this author in the future. Highly recommend this.

Avenged was an excellent sequel to Vanished, giving me exactly what I wanted from the conclusion to this series.

As much as I liked Vanished when I read it, I did forget a lot of details since I then. This sequel did an excellent job of reminding me of everything I needed to know without going on too much about what happened in the first book. I felt like the tension in this book was really high, and I enjoyed reading I a lot. I had real trouble putting it down once I got into it. I loved Kalah as a main character, though it was frustrating at times how no one would listen to her.

I did think the ending was sort of rushed and didn't feel as satisfying as it should have, but it was still good.

At the end of Book #1 Vanished, Brit turned up, and Beth had been the one to die. Everyone believes that Brit had nothing to do with Beth's death and that she was a victim too. That is everyone except for Kalah who was friends with both of them, but closer to Beth than Brit. You see Kalah knows Brit's true colors and how she always likes to be the center of attention and nobody crosses Brit and lives to tell the tale. It is considered social suicide to cross Brit, and it seems since Beth is dead, things went too far. In Avenged, Kalah will start her investigation to catch Brit out for the murder but can she complete it successfully especially when the fingers are pointing at her as the murderer in some twisted love affair where they have painted Kalah as a psycho stalker. Personally, for me, I did enjoy Avenged but felt that it fell a bit flat for the story it was trying to portray. Yes, Brit was a sociopath but it could have played a bit more on her sociopathic sides and her need for attention as nobody can be that clever which we did discover her flaws at the end of the book. I had also hoped that Kalah's family could have been a bit more supportive of her as they seemed quite oblivious to what was really happening and seemed to place the fault on her by suggesting strongly she goes to therapy etc. The Vanished series is a great read if you loved Sara Shepard's series Pretty Little Liars and The Perfectionists mixed with the Kiss Kill Love Him Still series by Jamie Blair and wanting some teen mystery to add variety to your reading lists.

GRADE: A-

Welcome to my web, said the spider to the fly. But who is the spider, and who the fly.

Kalah's best friend and lover Beth is dead, and Kalah believes their third BFF Britney killed Beth. Kalah is will let nothing stop her from proving Brit's guilt. Not her history at her old school, with her former best friend. Not her ex boyfriend. Not her parents. Not the police liaison. Not even her therapist, who question's Kalah's version of events.

I questioned the reliability of Kalah until the very end of the book. At times I thought her psychotic, at times misunderstood. I was pretty certain Kalah was correct about Brit's duplicity most of the time, but unsure that Kalah wasn't also devious or delusional. Or both.

I usually need someone, particularly the narrator, for whom to root. Unlike in VANISHED, I didn't cheer on Kalah in AVENGED. I didn't have a lot of sympathy for her lies, or how she used people as a means to an end. She manipulated everyone and everything, to prove her point. If she even had a real point and not a delusion. EE Cooper did such a great job pulling me in, I didn't need to care about Kalah's success.

AVENGED is unputdownable, because I wanted to know what was real. I rarely find a sequel or part 2 as good as the first, but I enjoyed this even more than VANISHED.

Read VANISHED, and as soon as you're done, grab AVENGED to find out what's real and what is not.

I was excited for this series because it's a murder-mystery and of LGBT interest. But there really is no plot in this book. You basically get 400 pages of the main character trying to think of ways to trap a killer, and all the while the killer is spreading lies about her so no one will believe her. That's it. They pretend they like each other and are best friends but the whole time they're trying to stab each other in the back. But many of the lead character's plans fall through or her leads to proving who the killer is just turn out to be dead ends. After chapters worth of build-up, every chance the author had to further the plot ends up just petering out anticlimactically. You keep expecting...*something* and there's no payoff. It's 80% filler and very little actual plot or story.

This volume doesn't work well as a follow-up to its predecessor. In volume 1, a girl named Melissa is the antagonist's greatest detractor, always making snarky comments and trying to one-up her. In volume 2 Melissa is her biggest groupie, and the reason for this change is never explained. The ex-boyfriend was never described in the first book whatsoever, but in book 2 he is made out to be a huge nerd who quotes Star Wars and has to be warned not to bring action figures to the prom. It's like the author forgot who these characters were except for their names.

We already know who the killer is from the previous volume, so there's no surprise. And the author went completely overkill with turning everyone against the protagonist; her ex-boyfriend, friends, parents, therapist, and school staff all think she's crazy, but no one considers that since all evidence of her insanity are coming from one single source that something about that reeks of suspicion. As a whole, all the characters behave completely irrationally. There's nothing believable about this story, and it feels like the author is cramming as many ideas as possible into the narrative and then just leaves them all unresolved. The real kicker is that the killer keeps doing terrible things, like posting nude photos of another student online to turn the school against her, and then she openly admits to it ALL, but it isn't until the very end that the protagonist thinks to record their conversations, and by then the antagonist doesn't trust her so it's too late. She could have had her so many times but just let herself be tricked and threatened throughout the whole book.

I found this book to be a frustrating read, and not just because of the numerous typos. It's always annoying to me when a character is backed so far into a corner that people literally think they're crazy, and this book pushed that trope to the absolute extreme. It's like the author had one trick up her sleeve, and she played that card to death. I was satisfied with the ending, though. However implausible the whole story was, the main character found her brain in the very last chapter so I'm grateful I can finally heave a sigh of relief and put the book down for good.

Title: Avenged

Author: E.E. Cooper

Age Group: Teen/Young Adult

Genre: Contemporary Fiction/Mystery/Thriller

Series: Vanished, book two

Star Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

I borrowed this book through my local library and reviewed it.

Avenged is the sequel to the smash hit published last year, Vanished. (Review can be found at this link: http://literatureobsessed.blogspot.co...) I loved that book so much. I loved that the main character was diverse, the creepy premise of a group of girls who were all hiding skeletons in their closets. Honestly, it was one of my favorite books of last year, and I didn't realize until I'd ordered it that there was a sequel. It's been sitting in my library stack, and I've been looking forward to it. I'd hoped that it would be good, but this was completely beyond my expectations.

Avenged picks up where Vanished left off, and that being said, I don't want to say too much about the plot--I don't want to ruin it for anyone. But this book was so good. Breakneck pacing, creepy tension, and amazing prose all combine to form a sequel that is deeply satisfying. The payoff was so killer, it was worth waiting for! Cooper has a real talent for writing chilling, spine-tingling mysteries. (And what better time to read a thriller than winter?!) It is honestly one of my favorite books of 2016, easily my favorite duology. It was so much fun! What a thrill ride! The bottom line: The sequel to Vanished, Avenged is a meaty, satisfying end to a great mystery duology of the last year! I loved it so much! Next on deck: Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson, and Robin Wasserman!

I've been waiting for the sequel to Vanished for what feels like forever and devoured Avenged. It didn't disappoint! It had the same mystery, intrigue, suspense and fast paced storyline that the first book did. I highly recommend this duology! I'm sad there are no more books for these characters. 5 Stars!

4.5 i think.... anyway i was HOOKED. kalah you will always be famous. this wasn't the type of insane sapphic book i thought it would be. like yes there's sapphics (we love you kalahbeth) but brit and kalah only had a handful of good lines TBH. but the line i quoted previously about kalah imagining herself suffocating brit? that was too excellent. and brit's meltdown at the end? also excellent.

This book was a little stressful, as the main character went through a lot of stuff psychologically. It all resolved itself just fine, but somehow I was waiting for more, I think. I'm not sure why I was left just feeling a little bit unsatisfied.

Still liked Kalah. And I also felt like we had the perfect closure to this story. However, some parts were a bit dragging but I only appreciated it when I got to the end.

I thought Avenged was an above-average mystery, but this sequel/finale blew my mind. If you wanted a YA mash-up between Gone Girl and Cruel Intentions, this is it. Because this story is about the psychological warfare between Kalah, who is out to, well, out Brit, who is hiding behind the web of lies. Kalah knows Brit killed Beth, but proving it is difficult. She tries many strategies, including waiting for her to slip up, pushing her into slipping, making her confide in her, but what she soon learns is that Brit is like the final boss of a video game - nearly indestructible, more experienced in warfare and almost impossible to beat. Whatever Kalah comes up with, Beth has already had a carefully laid out plan to dispute it. So, we see this incredible cat-and-mouse game of truth and perspective, with Beth's recent coming-back-from-dead status working very well in her favor, and Kalah's illness making her seem unreliable to all around her.

While this is a mystery unfolding around how to snare Beth, Kalah learns a lot along the way. She learns to not let her past define her, to not let the idea of friendship stand in the path of what is right, to be more brave, to be more truthful. There were so many moments throughout the story where I really felt for her, for her struggle, the frustration of the battle, the loss of her best friend and her lover - the author has beautifully constructed a narrative solely for the protagonist. Her personality and her past and as crucial to the story as are Beth's manipulations. While the ending is a bit straightforward, it was also ingenious and surprising, as I did not see that coming. Hours of How To Get Away With Murder have taught me that it is not that simple, and that is the only thing keeping me from truly believing that end to the story, but for a booknerd's purposes, let's just say - it was a satisfying end to this duology.

Overall, I thought this was better than Vanished, if only marginally. The author's writing is stronger, more colorful, in this sequel, and Kalah's tendency toward whining has been toned down.

However, Avenged seems to spin its wheels for much of the first 75% before rapidly concluding with a rushed, anticlimactic ending (it actually made me wonder if this was originally intended as a trilogy and then hastily reworked into just two books, with the resolution tacked on). The "big moment" at the end doesn't feel wholly consistent with Brit's characterization, and I'll leave it at that to avoid spoilers. Unless you care to be spoiled (seriously, it's a big one): .

It's a fast and fun read, but not much really happens in the first twenty-or-so chapters. Brit does something awful, Kalah becomes disgusted and tries to find evidence against her, Brit is one step ahead so nothing comes of it. Rinse and repeat. Cooper definitely earns those Gone Girl comparisons with the expansion of Brit's role, but the plot itself becomes repetitive. Still, it delivers on the promise of Vanished's ending, resulting in less of a mystery and more of a thriller this time around.

Chapters read: 11

Though Vanished wasn't the best book ever, it very much hit me in that crack spot when I read it a couple of years ago. The voice worked for me, and I sped through it. With Avenged, I've lost that. I'm about 30 percent through the book, and I'm so bored and not invested.

Kalah's trying to prove that Brit killed Beth, but the pacing is glacial and mostly without tension because Kalah is so incredibly awful at investigating. She thinks she's being stealthy and even with her being the one to tell me stuff, she's so obviously bad at acting and snooping. Kalah's relationship with Beth drove Vanished, but in Avenged she's not close to anyone but Brit, which isn't a real relationship at this point. Everything feels artificial because it is, and it's hard for me to care about or invest in a character that's so static.

Thankfully, a kind reviewer spoiled the ending of Avenged, and I'm so glad, because it was the final impetus I needed to give up.
Brit ends up confessing her evil deeds in an angry yell at Kalah, all in front of a cop like a scene straight out of an over the top cop drama. Way to plot! Also, it's so fucking boring that Brit actually is the villain like Kalah thought. Imagine if it had been Kalah all along. DUN DUN DUN.
