A heist story unlike any before! Mega-churches are being robbed for millions of dollars by a crusader hacker group known as Samaritan who is giving the money to causes they deem more worthy. This modern day "Robin Hood" is being pursued by two FBI agents who actually admire their quarry but want to stop the theft before it escalates.

Tony Alamo, Ted Haggard, Terry Hornbuckle, Gilbert Deya, Jim Bakker (who’s quoted at the start), Douglas Goodman: just a handful of real-life disgraced pastors of mega-churches whose crimes ranged from drug abuse to child abuse and several other non-Christian activities, not to mention hypocrisy (though some might argue the latter is typical Christian behaviour). Then there’s the Catholic Church and its centuries of hidden crimes for which priests and nuns were shielded by the power of the Pope, while its victims were ignored. Ah, Christianity, where would we be without you? Probably better off and more advanced, but there we go!

cw: racism, antiblackness, islamophobia, sexism, colonization, religion, fraud, copaganda, ableism

a friend gave this and #2 to me after being disappointed. this series is about a group of robin hood stealing from corrupt churches and giving back to charities. sounded interesting so i thought i'd give it a try and let's just say that this just reinforced everything i believe about white people needing to stay out of bipoc spaces and NOT speak over us like this. the tithe has random unchallenged racism, tons of sexism, weird colonization shit like "look at this pastor saying he was gonna spread the word of god but he's actually having sex with the islanders!", the mistreatment of people dealing with addiction, and the pro-cop message through the lens of a black man...again, white people don't have the experience nor the nuance to be the voice of bipoc. just let a bipoc creator have the platform and write your own shit for yourself. unless someone wants these and will cover shipping, i'm throwing these in the recycle bin because they're trash.

I really enjoyed Think Tank so wanted to give Mr. Hawkins' other work a chance. I am hesitant to give this a star rating as it really is too early in the story for me to rate it accurately but overall maybe 2.5 stars so i'll give it a three for the moment. That will probably change once the first arc is over which is why I hesitate on grading single issues.

This is the first issue which is the set up and introduction of the characters. Basically the story is going to be a mix of religious agenda's and how it affects or motivates people possibly (specifically Christianity vs. atheism so far), done against the backdrop of a heist done against "mega churches" that make millions of dollars from their followers combined with hacking technology. However, the focus so far IS ON THE HEIST itself of these churches that are committing "fraud" per some people's reasonings.

Interesting mix though I will admit to being a tad cautious with books that deal with religion when the writer states at the end of this issue #1 he is used to be a Southern Baptist and now Atheist. I have nothing against the writer's religious beliefs or philosophical beliefs. Quite the opposite, but I have come across work by others who have tried similar themes (not with a heist though) to delve into the subject and it is very easy to turn into an all out attack or bashing on one group over another on who is right religiously or not (which to be honest, I have no real interest in seeing that debated in a comic usually). But I have trust in Mr. Hawkins previous work and his posts from Facebook to give it a whirl to see how he would do it. To be truthful, it is really too early for me to judge on whether the story will keep me hooked or not. It has caught my interest more than what i expected going by the brief blurb I had seen elsewhere as I only tried this out of curiosity from liking his previous work. It definitely has action as well hacking and technology side that normally grabs me in stories. And the art by Mr. Ekedal is very good as usual. I am willing to give the second issue a try to see if the story gains it's "legs" to continue and see how all the motives are linked and worked out. As long as I don't feel like I am being lectured how one group is better than another I am on board. I don't mind debates or stories that delve into difficult topics, but it isn't fun if it turns into a smug hate for another group if that makes any sense. Not an automatic "pull" for me on my comic book reading list, but one I will read if nothing else grabs my interest. Recommended for fans of Think Tank and heist movies or the genre (think Mission Impossible or the Ocean Eleven movies).

This isn't something I expected to enjoy so much in comic form. It reminds me more of a TV show or movie, just from the plot. However, this works. A group is robbing churches, but only churches that are lying to their congregations about where the funds are being appropriated. The only part that bothers me is this "reveal" of the person talking to the detective like seeing her face is somehow going to be shocking. If it showed everyone in on it in a big panel I'd think they were doing it to fit everyone in, but it focused so much on her I wondered if I was supposed to know why this was supposed to be shocking (after we already knew it was her from an earlier point in the comic).

After listening to "Overdue Podcast's" episode on "Preacher," I decided to skip that book in favor of The Tithe. This was a smart choice. The Tithe has everything I want in a comic book: action, a moral compass, a female protagonist (who is a hacker, no less). Although Hawkins makes clear at the end of the book that he's an atheist, this isn't a critique of religion per se. It's more of a critique about the ways that religion is used and abused by people in positions of power. I'm looking forward to reading the next volume.

This popped up in one of the FB groups I'm a part of so I figured I'd give it a quick read (http://topcow.com/files/TI001_loreade...). I'm not sure how to rate the single issue - I'm curious as to where it goes but with many (or most) comics I read, I can't really judge it based on the setup. It's a curiosity, I suppose.

I think I've decided I'm a fan of Matt Hawkins... this one has a strong message and great characters... well worth the read. My only complaint was it was too short (took only about 45 minutes to read)

This was an interesting take on going "Robin Hood" on corrupt churches. More happened here than I was expecting and it works.

Allright, I'll bite. Stealing from corrupt churches that steal from the public, our team of investigators versus the bad guys who are just being good "Samaritans." Let's see what's next
