Desires: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
Everyone has desires. Some desires are good, some are bad, and some are evil.

After a near-brush with death, Fitzwilliam Darcy decides it is time he married and produced an heir for Pemberley. Believing the only way forward is a marriage of convenience, Darcy makes arrangements to go to Town. If he should die without a son, then his rakehell cousin, Orwell Darcy, will inherit his estate.

Orwell Darcy has always desired Pemberley and its wealth. When he learns that his cousin is making plans to marry, and will soon be leaving Pemberley to finalise the arrangements, he makes his own plans to ensure that event never happens.

This is one of those Pride and Prejudice books that takes those same characters and weaves a completely different plot around them. It's not a Meryton assembly where the paths of Elizabeth and Darcy first cross, and neither pride nor prejudice factors into their relationship.

Darcy's paternal cousin, Orwell Darcy, is just a bad, bad man. He is currently next in line to inherit Pemberley if Fitzwilliam Darcy dies without any children. Wickham works for him, mostly helping out with underhanded schemes. After one failed murder attempt, Orwell turns the job over to Wickham along with a couple of henchmen, who hijack Darcy's carriage, take him to an isolated spot in Hertfordshire, stab him and leave him for dead. Fortunately, Elizabeth is taking a walk with Tinker, the family dog, who leads her to Darcy, critically wounded but still alive.

The story proceeds from there, as the Bennett family nurse the stranger to health and protect him from further attempts on his life. When Darcy first awakens from his unconscious state, he is immediately attracted to Elizabeth. It doesn't take long for the attraction to be mutual.

That's only the first of several storylines. Once Darcy is healthy, a group is assembled to apprehend Orwell, who was quick to take control of Darcy's properties during his absence, and all those who've been assisting him. Lady Catherine is, as usual, another hurdle. Mr. Collins goes to Longbourn on her orders to break up the happy couple, which doesn't go quite as planned. Colonel Fitzwilliam has a very happy storyline. Mr. Bingley's lack of a backbone is emphasized, and his character is weaker than in canon as, sadly, he waits too long to take control of the obnoxious Caroline. It is especially interesting the way Darcy's influence softens Mrs. Bennett in a believable way.

There's a lot of things to admire here - good character development, nice romance, a bit of suspense, some unexpected plot twists, and mostly fine writing.

With so much going for it, though, it turns into a chronology of sequential events once the Orwell/Wickham part of the book wraps up. The title is a good summary of what it all has in common since it deals with the desires of many characters in various situations: Orwell's desire for everything Darcy has, Georgiana's desire for Darcy to get home safely, Fitzwilliam's desire to pursue a relationship but without the financial means to start a family, Caroline's desire for Darcy, Lady Catherine's desire to unite Rosings and Pemberley, and, of course, Darcy's desire for Elizabeth... and others, too, but you get the idea. As such, there are multiple turning points without one in particular that unites them all.

Despite that, this book is quite good in many respects.

Darcy's cousin wants him dead, so the embittered cousin can inherit Pemberley. The final showdown with the odious cousin's lackey takes place near Longbourn and Elizabeth and dog find Darcy before he dies.
The Bennets save him and keep him safe during his recuperation. During which time ODC fall in love.
Following D's full recuperation, he must take care of the foul people that invaded his life.
That done there are months of wooing, duty, Lady C., Caroline, traveling before ODC wed.
In a nut-shell!

This is the second book I read recently in which there is no haughty Darcy. He is not proud, looking down on those around him, sneering at Mrs. Bennet and the youngest sisters. I didn't realize what was happening in the previous book, but here it occurred to me - and I Did NOT Miss It! Such a refreshing change to have other aspects of the story be in the forefront.

An enjoyable read for the story, if not for the quality of writing.

A good dog as a lifesaver and bad behavior should have a consequence: 4.5 stars

This was delightful, thrilling and a little strange in the juxtaposition of characters and events. It almost felt like two books as the tone changed about half way through the story. The first part was full of drama, thrills and an attempted murder of our beloved character. The second part was completing the love stories with our main characters and handling the distribution of justice for the evil committed.

This story was laced throughout with FATE changing everything we knew, or thought we knew, about P&P. Events and characters were tossed about and changed up until you never knew from one page to another what was about to happen and what characters would wind up together.

In this variation, Darcy’s father had a twin brother and he had a son [Orwell Darcy]. His behavior and antics would put Wickham to shame. He had convinced himself that, due to a mix-up with the midwife, HIS father was the first born and true heir. He now felt that Pemberley and everything Darcy had should be his. He was so evil he was willing to kill in order to have what he wanted, or what he desired.

After an accident, Darcy realized that if he died without an heir born to him, everything would go to his cousin Orwell Darcy [who was not a nice guy]. He especially worried for Georgiana’s safety. Since Darcy did not care for any of the ton ladies, he decided to do his duty to the family and marry his cousin Anne de Bourgh. In route to Rosings, Darcy was attacked and left for dead.

Elizabeth was out on one of her walks when her dog found Darcy who was near death. She got help and they took him to Longbourn where they nursed him while he recovered. All this was in secret as the doctor informed them that his injuries were due to a murder attempt and not just robbery. When Darcy woke up, he didn’t know who he was or what had happened to him.

Our author was so creative as she wove her story and twisted canon a bit and let us see how our characters would evolve if their circumstances were different. Elizabeth and Darcy meet before pride or prejudice was created in their characters. They met on a level playing field and that natural draw or pull between them was allowed to blossom with free reign.

Once the ball was rolling with ODC, then the cascade effect began with Darcy seeing her family in a different light. His relationship with Mrs. Bennet was delightful and how he used her abilities and weaknesses to advantage. He was really brilliant. That continued in his relationship with the younger girls as they fell under the influence of Georgiana and her refined ways.

Mr. Bennet was wonderful as he tried to protect the young man who had captured the heart of his second oldest daughter and his favorite child.

Lady Catherine was a piece of work and really over the top. She was simply delightful and devious as she tried to force a match between the two estates. We also got a glimpse into her reasons for wanting the match. I did not see that coming; it completely caught me off guard. What a surprise.

Mr. Collins: I really liked how his circumstances took a turn for the better. This was his HEA and I’ve never seen it played like this in any story I’ve read to date. I really liked how things worked out for him…really creative.

Bingley group: WOW!!! You reap what you sow, if you don’t like weeds, then you better pull them when they first sprout, otherwise you’ll have a devil of a time getting the roots that have become entrenched in the ground. That was Bingley’s trouble with Caroline. He had allowed her to be domineering, controlling, out of control, and hurtful to those around her. Caroline was herself and perhaps more so than canon. She was really awful and refused to be checked.

Bingley was weak and ineffective in this version and we were allowed to see the consequences of his actions in how everything played out. It was eerie as the author brought him up to what would have been a canon meeting and then suddenly veered us off in another direction. It was a wonderful juxtaposition of what we were expecting and what we were given. What a delicious surprise. I’ve always wanted to see what would happen if Austen’s description of Bingley was accurate. His consequence for being that person cost him and cost him dearly. I really wanted to see that played out and to see how Darcy would handle it… most excellent.

Could be considered a ***SPOILER***
While we had the love story playing on one level, we also had to bring the villains to justice. This was a difficult plot to manage as Darcy had three fronts to consider. There were bad guys in Hertfordshire leasing Netherfield, his odious cousin at Darcy House and a few villains at Pemberley. I felt the assault on Netherfield was managed well with our dear Colonel organizing and leading the attack with the magistrate, several local strong men and Darcy. Darcy and the Colonel then rushed to town to Matlock House to gather additional men and then on to Darcy House. I loved the scene with the Colonel and his sword. Yeah, he was a hero for sure. I cannot spoil his HEA…you will just have to read it.

Darcy’s heart and compassion was demonstrated on more than one occasion as he looked for the best in people. He also looked for the best circumstance for them. I loved this Darcy and that character strength in him. On one occasion, when the law demanded justice, he pleaded for the life of a good man. He felt no one should die for the crimes of others, especially if he could help prevent it.

I was constantly surprised at the creative angles the author took to solve problems that I never thought of. It really created a story that was so different, and yet, was completely acceptable to me. Others may not have liked it; however, I did.

There are several very good reviews by others. One mentions how we read of the desires of both good men and women and also those of some very bad persons. You can imagine, I am sure more than one of them. Another review brings up the fact that the first part of the book had a lot of tension as Darcy is beaten, stabbed and left for dead and even then the perpetrators are looking for a body so his presence in the Bennet household must be kept secret. (Can you imagine Mrs. Bennet or even Lydia keeping a secret?) As the criminals are hunted down and dealt with the second part of the book is much more of a sweet ride: Darcy insists on a long engagement due to the fact that Elizabeth knows basically nothing about him...he had amnesia during his recuperation. The Colonel, Jane Bennet, Mary Bennet and even Mr. Collins have romance in their lives. The latter man is a much more pleasant character after Darcy takes him in hand.

Bingley's lack of a backbone is played up and with that his sister is even more of a shrew...if that is possible. He comes to Netherfield later than in canon so his story definitely has a different twist.

Some of the story has to do with Elizabeth fitting into the ton. Her long engagement period makes it possible for more interaction with various members of the Darcy/Fitzwilliam families and acquaintances.

The angst in this story is very short lived in the beginning of the story. Darcy's injuries are not played up so the readers is not suffering with him long. It was nice to read of him meeting and getting to know Elizabeth with no thoughts of how his family or society would treat her as he suffers from amnesia. She also gets to know him without any negative opinions about his behavior. He is just a man and she is just the lady who with her dog saved his life.

An action-packed thriller with a friendship to love trope.

Orwell Darcy, Mr Darcy's cousin and son of his father's twin brother had his eyes on both Pemberley and Georgiana. Having Wickham under his thumb and an evil disposition, he was out to get what he wanted by any means necessary. One of the attacks on Mr Darcy's person, left him badly wounded in the woods of Meryton and the Bennet's nursed him back to health. Mr Darcy was initially on his way to Kent to propose to his cousin Anne when he was attacked, as the need for an heir had risen. His plans changed after meeting Miss Elizabeth Bennet and ODC reached an early understanding. The pace did eventually slow down with a long courtship and then engagement periode but the author managed to keep it interesting until the end.
There were several HEA's in this story and apart from ODC it was not the pairings we are used to from canon. Ends with an epilogue.

Heartily recommend this book! 4,5*

Desires: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

A wonderful story, starts out rather
surprising, with Mr. Darcy having such an awful relative, planning his demise; but all is not lost, because an early, life-saving meeting with Lizzie happens! The rest is History. Great read.

Darcy is found almost dead

Darcy is found almost dead by Tinker the dog, who belongs to the Bennets. No one knows who he is and he is taken to Longbourn. He falls in love with Lizzy while he is recovering. Worse he has amnesia.

Good story. The bad guys are very bad. Pleasant non-canon version of P&P.

I recommend the book.

Desires: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Excellent story. In this this story Darcy has a cousin, Orwell, with the goal of inheriting Pemberley by hook or crook. He's friends with Wickham who thinks he was cheated and has a hateful grudge against Darcy, and this gives a clue to how bad Orwell Darcy really is. He's ruined the estate Fitzwilliam's father gave to his twin brother. He also sold an estate that he inherited for £45.000 and he still wanted Pemberley and its wealth. Darcy realizes that he has to marry so he can beget a heir. He decides to just marry Anne and be done with it. Be going to Rosings, Darcy travels to London. On the way, Wickham attacked Darcy's carriage around Meryton, killed Darcy's driver, then beat Darcy almost to death before stabbing him. As per normal, Lizzy is out walking with her father's hunting dog, Tinker, who really doesn't hunt because he's afraid of gunfire. While walking, Tinker runs to another trail and discovers Darcy. Lizzy runs to where Tinker was barking, and all she sees is two bodies and too much blood. When she sees Darcy is still breathing, she stops the blood flow and tells Tinker to stay pushing against where Darcy is stabbed. She goes for help and when her father and his men come, they remove the bodies. Orwell Darcy comes to Meryton to find out anything about the missing bodies that he can. Those that know anything are closed lipped. Even Mrs. Bennet. Of course Mrs. Bennet wouldn't want to loose a suitor for her daughter's hand. She sees that Jane and the Colonel seem to seek out one another. Plans are made to get the three men doing Orwell's dirty work at Netherfield. The four men of Meryton with the help of many other men, storm Netherfield and capture Orwell Darcy's crew and haul them to Meryton's jail. Time for London and his evil cousin. With his wicked cousin left alone with his goon, who ran away taking a few items to sell, Orwell was locked in a room with no means of escape. His choice is to go to America or face the court in London. He really doesn't choose, but Darcy and Fitzwilliam put him on a vessel heading to America. The cool jumps into the water before he could be grabbed, and drowns. On to Pemberley. Jackson, the goon that ran when the seven men stepped out of the carriages, recognizing only Darcy, picks up items he can sell and travels to Pemberley to get the rest of his family that was put there Orwell. Stealing anything in Darcy's office that they can carry to sell when they get to Manchester. When he and the Colonel arrive, tears of joy fell at the Master's return. Needless to say, Georgiana is ecstatic that her brother was alive and home. Colonel Fitzwilliam rides to Manchester to get the heirloom pieces that were stolen. Traveling back to Longbourn with his sister, her companion, Mrs. Annesley, and Richard. During the time Darcy was gone, the Earl and his wife visited Lizzy. Richard was correct, she was perfect for Darcy. Mrs. Bennet has been quiet and reserved throughout their stay that Jane and Elizabeth are dumbfounded. Meanwhile up in Scarborough, Bingley was reading the society page. When he sees Darcy and Elizabeth's wedding announcement, he accidentally spills coffee over the page. When he tries to wipe the coffee up, all he did was smear the ink making the paper illegible. When Bingley takes the lease on Netherfield, Darcy says he will come and visit but he'll have Georgiana and the Colonel with him. No problem..really, yes there is, the witch known as Caroline. The next morning our three visitors are visiting else where. Caroline was a bit peeved, and Bingley still had not told her of his marriage. At the upcoming Meryton Assembly, Caroline was keeping them from. Darcy tells him, if she's not down in fifteen minutes, he was leaving her. Angry because she was rushed, Caroline begins her tirade before they get to the assembly. When Darcy walks off to find Elizabeth, if looks could kill Darcy and Elizabeth would had dropped dead on the spot. When he and Fitzwilliam change partners, Caroline becomes more aggravated, if possible, than before. When he dances with Mary the next dance her head wants to explode. Finally he danced with Caroline because she is his friend's sister and it is polite to do so. As soon as they finish, he bows, turns on his heels, and moves across the floor to be with Elizabeth. Both Bingley and Louisa have told her Darcy will never marry her, but she refuses to believe that she will not be the Mistress of Pemberley. The Sunday at church when the first of the banns were read, Bingley tried to tell her, but she failed to believe. Well she outdid herself. Lady Catherine also was a pain, and then she sent Collins to somehow stop the wedding. He turns into someone I've never would have imagined. Quite a few happy couples in the end.

Desires

What a wonderful story that started in such a horrible way. Darcy’s heir apparent, Orwell Darcy the only child of Darcy’s father twin brother, is an evil degenerate who desires Pemberley and its riches. When Fitzwilliam Darcy leaves Pemberley to propose marriage to Anne de Bourgh, Orwell uses George Wickham to do his dirty work and kill his cousin. However, thank goodness Wickham is useless in completing the deed. Darcy is found by Lizzy and her dog, Tinker. As Tinker guards Darcy, Lizzy runs for help. When her Father arrives along with Mr. Jones, they decide that whoever’s done this to the unknown young man meant to kill, not rob, him. They hide him and make up a story as to why he’s here and who he is. Orwell travels an hour behind Fitzwilliam’s carriage and is angry that he cannot locate the body of his cousin to prove his death. Meanwhile he continues to recover at Longbourn with the help of the three older Bennet daughters especially Lizzy. Darcy falls in love with Elizabeth and his love grows deeper as he recovers from his wounds. He still doesn’t remember who he is until he hears Wickham’s name mentioned and hears his voice. Plans are made to capture Wickham and his two accomplices staying at Netherfield. Luckily, Darcy’s cousin, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam has returned from France and comes to Longbourn. At first shocked and skeptical by his betrothal to Lizzy, he quickly sees the love they share. It helps that he begins to love Jane himself, but holds back as a second son. As Orwell Darcy is given a choice to face court charges or removal to America, he chooses to go to America. William Collins shows up right before Elizabeth and Darcy’s wedding, but his conscience gets the best of him and confesses what his Aunt Catherine wanted him to do to prevent the wedding. Rewarded for his honesty, Collins is offered the position at Kympton. Trying to escape jail Wickham is killed, his cohort hung, and the young man driving the carriage hired as Darcy’s replacement carriage driver. Caroline Bingley is delusional as ever and Charles Bingley spineless a ever. When she won’t listen to her brother, she makes a complete fool of them both as the first bands are read in church. The outcome of her foolishness makes London before the Bingleys arrive the next morning. Darcy offers Richard Orwell Darcy’s holdings at Pemberley and he accepts. He and Jane begin a courtship and the Darcys begin their HEA. Really enjoyed this story.

An interesting plot, well executed

This story veers significantly from canon with less tension between the main characters, with all of the tension coming from outside the immediate circle. Bingley is significantly under Caroline's thumb and has to bear the consequences as a result.

Despite the shocking start this is really a low angst story.

Oh my goodness!! How could one person cause so much trouble? How could his lackey be so callous? Thank goodness for Tinker and Elizabeth with their fondness of walking. This is an amazing tale of love and what it can do. Highly recommended to read

I tried,I really did but I abandoned this at 57%! It just didn't grip me, I was not invested in the characters or what happened to them . It read like a childs story, ' this happened and then we did this and then we did that', the writing was very basic and flat.
