Could you love a murderer?

“So you want to hear a story?”
“Depends. It isn't a love story is it? I don't want to hear a love story—they're all diluted by cliches.”
“It's not a love story. It's about two people coming together under complicated circumstances to find they can care for one another.”
“Sounds like a love story.”
“Well, it's not. It's more a tale of survival. Do you want to hear it?”

Dark Winters, an eight year-old from Coventry, is set to go on holiday with his parents. In a rush, they pack their bags and head into the storm in search of The Jurassic Coast's warm beaches.

They have only been driving for twenty minutes when they hit something in the road that changes their lives forever.

Dark finds himself in a strange building with no idea how he got there and, to his growing horror, his parents are no longer with him. But when he hears movement above his head, it dawns on him he is not alone . . .

After enduring over nine years in his new home, the last thing Dark wants is to develop feelings for his captor. Yet, he is helpless to prevent his feelings--it's almost as though fate is at work. Now, all he has to do is find a way to get the deadliest person he's ever met to notice him.

This book is intended for a mature audience with scenes some people may find offensive.

Leaving the winter weather behind, 8 year old Dark Winters is headed with his parents to a warmer climate. Set in Coventry, England this tale begins with an accident that changes Dark's life forever.

Dark's captor, Travis, is your worst nightmare. A killer who enjoys his hobby. Will he keep Dark as a victim, or will he begin to care for this child? For some reason Travis continues to kill, but stops at killing Dark. Nightmares, memories of his parents, making up stories, and a stuffed animal are what keep Dark company in his boarded up room.

Creepy story as it goes between Travis's killing spree and Dark's prison in Travis's basement. What is it that visits Dark in the darkness? Is it a monster? Perhaps an animal? Or is it a hallucination? Dark isn't the only one seeing this hallucination, now Travis sees it too.

After being captive for 9 years Dark's begins to have feelings for Travis. Is it real? Is he just a product of his circumstances? What happened to Dark's parents that wet winter night? Can Dark tame the monster Travis? Now that Dark is seventeen things will change. Shocking revelations will come to light. It will affect how Dark feels about Travis and himself. Will this be a love story from the ashes of a kidnapping? It was unusual circumstances that led Dark to this point.

Disturbing to me is relationship between this teenager and an adult. I also found the child abuse extremely hard to read. However, it is a work of fiction. Travis isn't exactly a parental type, but tried at some point to care for Dark. In their own way they found each other. This story is intended for an open mind and a mature audience.

This story! WOW! I wrote this review a few times. Deleted, rewrote. I wasn’t sure how to get my feelings in order, in a way people would get how much I loved it.
This is a dark, psychological romance. Sort of romance. See, Dark is kidnapped as an 8 year old boy and held in a basement by a cruel stranger. He’s not nice. This story spans 9 years. And before I go on I HAVE to say this. Travis, the stranger, is NOT a pedophile. Don’t panic. You hear 8 year old boy kidnapped you assume that. But no. I wasn’t sure if I should reveal that but I think it’s necessary.
Dark is a smart boy. He has a fantastic imagination and in the 9 years he’s with Travis he starts to fall in love with him. Stockholm syndrome some might say and I’m inclined to agree. Sort of. It’s really hard to explain without giving things away.
Travis is cruel. He’s not a nice man… until he sees. And it’s twisted, dark, creepy at times. I had to take a lot of deep breaths while reading. It was seriously suspenseful at times and my mind was reeling!
The ending of this book was everything. Like WHOA! Lol. I feel like I’m not expressing myself well. If you love psychological stories. If you like feeling dark and scary tendrils creeping up your spine. If you love strength in broken times and books that make you think and keep you in their clutches. Paper Kisses is totally for you!

Not a love story...

Yes, I think it was a love story. But it was also dark, tragic, and a bit confusingly. The life of killers.

Paper Kisses is a story split into three parts. Part 0ne is the longest, in which R.M. Grace details Dark’s shocking first few months as he learns to live without his parents, a bath, toilet, regular food, and fresh air. Grace chooses not to use a first-person narrative, yet the thoughts and feelings of Dark and Travis are palpable and at times, overwhelming, particularly during this period of adjustment and confusion for both characters. Grace very cleverly deconstructs Dark and Travis so that the reader feels we know them inside out. Dark’s childlike hope and innocence exists alongside Travis’ anger and depravity and we question how either character can survive.

As Paper Kisses moves seamlessly into Part Two, which is 9 years later, it is almost like meeting Dark and Travis again. Both men are more open and the relationship between them has clearly evolved – though is still undefined. We are shocked when Dark is exposed to – and accepts – everything Travis is, and does. Yet conversely, we recognize that this cements the deep connection between them, allowing Dark to fully acknowledge his romantic feelings for Travis.

Stockholm Syndrome is described as “feelings of trust or affection felt in many cases of kidnapping or hostage-taking by a victim towards a captor.” However, I think Grace makes the bond that exists between the two men more substantial than this. This is partly due to the awakening both men experience because of the other’s existence and also when Dark realizes that his parents were not the people he believed them to be. There is a point in the story when Dark admits to himself that “I misunderstood him so much . . . .he’s all I’ve got”. I think this is also when we accept that being enough for Dark is all that Travis has to do, in order to redeem himself in our eyes.

It was difficult for me to assign a number value to this book, because it affected me in so many different ways. And that’s why it’s getting a 5: any book that can be so nuanced as to affect me on multiple levels has done its job. It's a bit difficult to get too deep into it without giving away spoilers, and I'm not big on giving those away. But I do have to say a few things.

First of all, Grace has a way with words. She writes prose beautifully, not going too far into the realm of ‘so poetic I can’t stand it’ but going far enough to where I appreciate the loveliness of her language. From the start, I was captivated by the way she writes. It’s distinctly British rather than being Americanized, and I adored that element of it. Her use of present tense is something I’m not usually fond of, but I barely noticed once I got into the story

I’ve been reading a lot of works out of the genre I prefer, but this brought me right back to where I’m comfortable and happy--and then promptly threw me back out of my comfort zone...which made me happy. Well. This isn’t a happy, humorous book, folks. There were tears. This was a difficult read, but it was a very good read, too.

If I had one criticism, it would be that the beginning is a little difficult to get into. But it’s worth getting past it to get to the rest. Beautiful. Just beautifully terrible and terribly beautiful.

I don't usually DNF any book but this one, despite the potential to be a great read, i just couldn't get into it. Usually i like pov changes but in this there's nothing that indicates them so it got really confusing as i had to reread sentences several times just to be able to work it out that the pov changed.

First of all, I want to start the review saying that this book is a 4.5 read for me, but I am giving it 5 stars here since it makes more sense to me.

Okay, I also have to mention that I havent given this high rating in a while! I am very pleased to have found a story as fascinating as this (though it is not an easy read at all). I am into dark stuff and can handle such themes alright, but I am conscious it isnabsolutely not for everyone, and it is better to DNF when something is just not your cup of tea.

Anyway, I always start by listing the things I found werent my taste, and while my mind was blown by this book, it still had some errors. Some of them are the length of chapters: long in Part One, then shorter towards the end, it was kind of disruptive. Same goes for the pov changing between the MCs in the middle of the chapters. Thankfully, there was a mark that helped the reader notice the change, but I feel that it would have been better to organize the chapters differently with some editing help. Last thing I wasnt vibing with was the overly descriptive writting at some momets. It got to the point where I skimmed through a few scenes (not that it affected my personal journey with the book though, lucky me!).

Other than that, now I start with the good stuff. This was a genuinely dark book as the tags say. That, combined with horror, it was the perfect combination for me, since both are some of my absolute favorites genres. I have to say, I wasnt expecting it not to shy away with the descriptions, so as I said before it is not a light read. I personally loved the writting style, it had a haunting and clear vibe where I could perfectly imagine everything that was happening. Sure, the plot does not make every sense in the world if we talk about the technical part, , but the author still made me believe every single word with the writting. I find that fascinating as well as admirable.

Regarding the characters, I find their development made sense according to the story. I do have to admit that, by the end, I felt that . However, that is only my vision, and despite that I think this book made a masterful job in creating a good atmosphere and add a compelling backstory to both captive and captor. Since it followed Dark more, it was inevitable to feel more for him, though I would have liked the story more if we stayed with his pov since Travis revealed a bit too much, like .

The relationship was, as expected, disturbing. The phrase “It's not a love story, it's about two people coming together under complicated circumstances to find they can care for one another” from the book itself summarizes it all perfectly. This is not a love story. Nobody in their right mind would think so. It is about two different people, that due to their situation, they cannot help but connect with each other in the only way it can happen in such unhealthy circumstances: .

I also cannot finish this without giving my thoughts on the ending: .

This book will certainly stay in my mind for some time. It is not one of those that you can easily forget the next day, but it was for sure an interesting journey through the psychology of two individuals that needed help.

Disturbingly beutifull

Strange story, disturbing in some ways, beutifull in other. The writing is superb, it grips you from the start.
Both of them has had a difficult life, same with the rest of the people in it. Its usally a reason for how a person grow up to be like...

With better proofreading I would have given this 3 stars. It isn't my cup of tea, mostly due to the attention being more on the early years than later. Despite that, the writing was reasonably good and I can see why others rated it higher.

I didn’t actually intend to start reading this book yet, but after reading a few critical reviews on Goodreads which referenced the first 10% or so of this story, well, I had to see what all of the fuss was about. At 5am I finally put the completed book down and cried myself to sleep. I still don’t know what I really want to say about Paper Kisses. I don’t know if I loved it or hated it. But there’s no denying that it’s one of the most enthralling books that I’ve ever read.

The story is told in three parts, the first part taking up around 60% of the story. It begins with eight year old Dark being bundled into the car at midnight by his parents, who tell him that they’re headed for the beach. It’s obvious to us that something isn’t quite right about the situation, but it isn’t until much further through the story that we discover the truth. All we know at this point is that when their car hits serial killer, Travis, their night doesn’t go as planned. However, Travis’ plans also go awry, as he acts on instinct and instead of killing Dark, he decides to pick him up and carry him home. And there he keeps him, a prisoner, for almost a decade.

I should probably assure you right off that Travis isn’t a pedophile, but although he never sexually abuses young Dark, he doesn’t see any harm in hitting, punching, burning, or knocking out teeth. But just as I’m unsure of my opinion on the plot, I’m also unsure of my opinion of Travis. While the author does provide a “reason” for the man being like he is, at no time does she try to excuse his behavior. He’s a serial killer with an anger management issue, who is more than slightly unhinged. But we see the way he changes as the years with Dark pass. We discover that in an odd way he rescued Dark. And we can see that Dark, as a young man, needs Travis to love him – and we want Dark to be happy. I think I was hoping that the author would somehow redeem Travis, but she doesn’t give us that easy out. I think that you, as a reader, need to decide if you can forgive or even just understand Travis enough to wish him happiness with Dark, and I think that that will be a key factor in whether some readers enjoy this book or not.

This book isn’t a romance, although the relationship between Travis and Dark does actually head in that direction. The love that develops between them is hard to understand, yet fascinating at the same time, and whatever the readers’ opinion on whether or not it was “real” there’s no denying that both men believe it in their own damaged way.

I think the ending is going to be the hardest thing for some readers to deal with. I won’t write any spoilers here, but if you’re like me (and want to know how a book ends before you begin) then follow the link below to my review on the Love Bytes blog, read through the tags at the bottom of the review and you’ll know.

I know that I said I’m unsure if I loved or hated this story, but I need to acknowledge the fact that this is a superbly written book. Whether it’s my kind of story or not is my own personal issue. The actual writing and attention to detail deserve to be recognized. I doubt that I’ll ever sit down to read this book again, but at the same time I know that I’ll never forget Dark and Travis’ story.

Total and complete rubbish. In a car crash especially with a death if a child goes missing the police know. Plus, you cannot sell a child in the UK as every single agency and any educational facilities must see paperwork. It just made no sense and the ending was just not worth the investment reading.

Wow. I have such mixed emotions about this book. In some ways I hated it but in other ways I can almost understand where the characters are coming from. Then I also found myself feeling grief for these characters and myself in tears because of this grief.

Travis is a deeply troubled individual who goes about it the wrong way to try and rid himself of the pain and anger that he feels dues to his parents horrific abuse of him. But at the same time I think that somewhere in there is a deeply caring man who feels as if he does not deserve to be live because of the abuse he sustained as a child.

Dark is such a victim of circumstance. When Dark came to be with Travis, he does not realize that in a very big way it is to protect him from people who are more horrible then Travis could ever be. The longer that Dark is with Travis the more they come to care about one another even though I think Travis does not know how to show it. Once Dark becomes an adult and realizes he has feelings for Travis I believe that Travis does start to change for the better. That is until he gives in once again to his dark side and sets into motion a storm that neither will ever recover from.

This book is definitely not for everyone. But for those of you who like a dark read with somewhat of a love story mixed into it and an ending that will leave you shocked and wondering if it is a good thing or a bad thing, then this is he book for you.

The beginning was a bit slow and I honestly didn't think i was going to like this book.
But as the story progressed and Dark got older I loved reading about the developing relationship between him and Travis.
However, what made me give this a 3 star rating was it's explanation for Dark's kidnapping and how the author ended the story. It gave, in my opinion, the perfect ending for these characters.

***2016 has been a very unstable year. Not only have I lost favourite role models in droves, I have been into dark places more times than I could count. Yes, I experienced highlights as well but the darkness has had a big impact this year and the only way to keep it at bay was reading, mass reading, back to back books with no stopping and no reviewing. I do apologize to all the writers that I won’t be able to review their books yet but I will get to it. Promise!***
