My husband, in a rage, hit me in front of the wrong person. Diego, or Kincaid to most, beat the hell out of him for it. I left with Diego anyway. Even though he could turn on me just like my husband did, I knew I had a better chance of survival with Diego. That was until I realized Kincaid could hurt me so much worse than my husband ever could. Physical pain pales in comparison to troubles of the heart.
I am Diego “Kincaid” Anderson.
She was a waitress at a bar in a bad situation. I brought her to my clubhouse because I knew her husband would kill her if I didn’t. Now she has my protection and that of the Cerberus MC. I never expected her to become something more to me. I was in more trouble than I’ve ever been in before, and that’s saying a lot considering I served eight years in the Marine Corp with Special Forces.
Marie James is a mother of two boys and wife of 17 years. She's spent most of her life lifetime living in central Texas, with only short stays in South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida. Her passions include reading everything under the sun and sewing, although she doesn't get to sew much these days!.
Writing has always been a passion and she's enjoying every step of the journey!
DNF at 45%. The heroine in this story is saved from an extremely abusive husband by a biker and the second she gets to the clubhouse, it's like she was never abused. Pining for a biker she just met and getting jealous upon seeing him around other women a few days after meeting him is just absurd. I'm fine with reading about abused heroines, but this book did not handle said abuse in a realistic way, at all. I'm tapping out .
I am so proud of myself for all of the new authors that I have been reading this year! It has been fun to explore new authors such as Marie James.
I have read a fair amount of MC romance, and I would say Kincaid falls more on the less dark side. However, that doesn’t mean that there are not hard topics discussed and experienced in this book because there definitely are some hard topics brought up. I loved this book because it was more romantic suspense than dark since all of the men were ex-military. They were also farmed out on missions that the US government couldn’t take on due to politics. I really enjoyed this story and the writing.
Emmalyn is a shell of the woman that she used to be because of an abusive husband. When Diego, aka Kincaid, gives her the opportunity to start over, she doesn’t hesitate to get on the back of his back. I loved seeing life be breathed back into Emmalyn. She is one feisty woman underneath the meek persona she has had to take on the past several years.
Diego is one bad mofo who is a big ole softie when it comes to Em. He took the time to nurture and get to know Em, and it was beautiful the way he loved her. He definitely has the protective alpha personality that is willing to go down fighting for the woman he loves.
So this is one of those MC reads that is "light & easy". I put that in quotes because it's as light and easy as you can get with a MC book and it still be a MC book. Make sense? It does in my head. I felt that the story was maybe a little underdeveloped in the beginning; some things being glossed over or shoved under the rug. I was even a little confused at first. There were things that were unrealistic at times - I hate saying that becomes I don't need complete realism but sometimes things are just too unbelievable. However, I loved the main characters and their story of coming together. I loved the concept of this MC; it was a little different and sets it apart from the other MC books out there.
Edit: Even though I deemed this a "light & easy" read, it does deal with subject matter such as The way the subject matter is handled is why the book is not weighed down by such serious subjects and is able to keep the light feel.
All in all, it's a great afternoon read that will leave you falling in love with the H & h.
☆ I received an ARC via Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!! ☆
This is my first Marie James but certainly not my last. *Thinks to self: Perhaps I should think about investing in Love Me Like That after all.*
Kincaid, was easy to read, easy to get into, and much more subtle than many MC reads I've been coming across these days. What stood out to me was that it was not over the top and ridiculous, which I feel many of its predecessors tend to dalliance way too much into. I dread reads that dabble heavily into sex, grit, useless squanders of violence. Makes me roll my eyes and skim over a whole lot of the read.
The two protagonists romance was slow brewing and understandable. With the female lead coming from the background that she did and the male comprehending that and being the honorable bloke that he was, everything progressed stow by steady. And with A LOT of sexual heat and tension!
My only complaint during all of this would be the big confrontation. It was a bit anti-climatic is all. Kinda was expecting more but beggars can't be choosers, can they? Hmmm.
So, what is this story about?:
Emmalynn Mikaelson has been in an abusive relationship with her husband for years. Now at the ripe age of 24, she meets Diego Andersen/Club name: Kincaid, President of Cereberus MC, while he and his buddies are at the bar she is working in and the two are instantly smitten with one another.
That is, until, Diego spots her wedding ban and decides that she's off limits.
But fate has a tricky hand at things, and when Diego witnesses Emmalynn being struck by her husband shortly after, he decides to take matters into his own hands and save her from a morbid fate: bring her to his MC and help her start a new life.
That's more easier than said, when Emmalynn still carries the scars and the physical stain of her years of abuse. And yet, she feels irrevocably drawn, safe, and protected by Diego, her mysterious knight in shining armor.
Can Emmalynn put aside her turbulent past and make a new go? And with her growing attraction and budding feelings for Diego developing into something more, can she take the leap again and trust not be burned? ... Can she find her voice and no longer be that shell of a woman she once was?
As for Diego, can he shield Emmalynn from ongoing threats against her (and even his) life while also protecting his heart in the process? Or are they just not meant to be?
For the men of Cerberus MC, it looks to be that their President will be one of the first aside from Doc to bite the dust with the love bug. Can all of these, former military men, stand up to the dangers that lurk around their club and also dangerous government funded jobs, while also making it alive to meet their own lady wet dreams? Hmmm, that will definitely something I strongly to look forward to! Can't wait!!
I started out liking the heroine but didn't like her soo much mid way into the book. She started to bug me with her always running when situations got tough, I understand seeing ow in Hero's bed would upset any normal human but it happened 2-3 times and it was clear the ow was doing it to bug the Heroine. The Hero was always the one apologizing, it was as though she could do no wrong.
The Hero was great! Really possessive and clearly in love with the heroine.
I read this after reading the 2nd book in this series, I have to say I enjoyed the 2nd book more.
If you want a heroine in need for help and a hero with I have to save them all syndrome then this is your thing. Actually it was decent and satisfying for passing time. It helps that there aren't scenes of violence on page rather just mentions.
I just want my time back. I love me a good damsel in distress that gets saved kind of book, and I thought I was getting that from the synopsis. While I did get that, I also got one of the most annoying FMCs I've read about in a while.
Emmaline really grated on my nerves and I just wanted her to grow up. She was getting abused by her husband for years and she never ran away. YEARS! Diego takes her away from all of that and give her a safe place to stay and start over and what does she do? She ran from him after every little convivence. This girl wanted to punish him for his past and being with club girls before her and jumped to conclusions like nobody's business.
Deigo was caring, too caring. Gave her a safe place to stay and bought her things to help her get on her feet. Didn't pressure her at all and wanted to treat her right by taking her out on dates and getting to know her. She disregarded all of that and ran when her feelings got hurt.
This was torture to get through and I don't even know why I didn't DNF.
What first attracted me to Kincaid was the cover, not going to deny it! I mean, COME ON!...Matthew Hosea is just, WOW! But as I dove into the story, I was instantly intrigued. Danger, mystery, violence, and a "damsel in distress" will get anyone's attention!
Emmalyn Mikaelson needed an escape. Having endured physical abuse from her husband for years, she was left with only two choices: finding the courage and strength to leave on her own, or in a body bag. And the latter was looking like the only option more and more each day. Until she meets Diego "Kincaid" Anderson. A sexy, tattooed biker was the last person she thought would ever come to her aid.
From the moment he laid eyes on Emmalyn, Diego felt an undefinable need to protect her. Beautiful, kind and compassionate, Emmalyn is the perfect woman Diego wants in his life. The more time they share together, the further he's falling for her. In danger of losing his heart to her completely, he needs to know if Emmalyn only sees him as her rescuer?...or do they actually have a chance at a future together?
Kincaid is not your typical MC book. Of course it contains suspense, lust, drama and sexy bikers. But it's also a very unique romance, filled with raw emotions that make you blind with passion. Diego and Emmalyn's story is quite original, and very refreshing. Not many MC books are focused on the true nature of selflessness and altruism. I loved how the characters considered each member of the MC as family, how they will do whatever it takes to guard and protect their family. The story is exciting and flowed seamlessly, containing the perfect amount of details without feeling lost or confused. And the continuous build of desire between Diego and Emmalyn was brilliant! Their relationship might be unconventional, but their attraction is unquestionably sincere and romantic!
I'm anxious for the next book in the Cerberus MC series! And hope to get more of Diego and Emmalyn! 5 Star Must Read!
*received ARC in exchange for an honest review.* ~Kelly
3.5 stars Kincaid opens with Emmalyn suffering abuse at the hands of her husband. She meets Diego “Kincaid” Anderson when he arrives at the bar she waitresses at. Emmalyn is intrigued by Kincaid but she frequently is blamed by her husband for the attention she gets from the patrons and is skittish. Kincaid can tell what is going on with her so he leaves her alone. But the husband is so pathetic he makes his move to hit her and Kincaid steps in. And so the story goes, Emmalyn runs off with Kincaid and is now under the protection of the Cerberus MC.
As far as MC reads this is pretty typical and predictable. A bit of insta-love, protective alpha male, and silly heroine. Emmalyn drove me nuts with her reactions to Kincaid. If he looked at a girl she went off and pouted and packed her bags to leave the club. If he said the wrong thing she packed her bags to leave the club. Instead of communicating she pouted. I would have preferred a story where Emmalyn worked on her issues a bit more and found her own footing. I just needed some more depth here.
Now that being said I did really enjoy the story. I like the over protective alpha male and I really liked the unique background of the club members. The members are ex-marines who are contracted by the government to do rescue jobs. The story actually takes you to a few of those locations so that was a unique aspect of the storyline. All in all this was a pretty good MC read and I will most likely read the next in the series.
DNF - 35% - h is older and married and very damaged after being in an abusive marriage. So H has to pussy foot around her - avoids being too demanding or controlling or anything remotely scary… or sexy. I’m sure she’ll Rise From the Ashes, after she get schooled in confidence by a wise club whore, but Meh. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 Bored.
Also, the goofy idea of an MC being righteous crusaders for justice seems absurd to me. Is that why people read MC romance? Because they’re looking for choir boys?? 🤔🙄
By 35% he knows that he’s crazy about her and that it upsets her when club whores hang on him, and yet he still hasn’t done anything about it. This doesn’t jive with his personality, and got on my nerves. It would be different if he was an alphahole. fighting his feelings, but he’s not. He’s supposed to be a good guy who really likes the h. 😐

Surprisingly, this was a decent damn book within the white side of the MClub world. For that niche, I’d give this four stars for plot and characters and five stars for clean technical writing that’s been properly edited.
On the surface, this is the same old recycled story of an abused female in distress and a military vet turned MClub member coming to her rescue. Sparks fly, but she’s married to the abuser, skittish as fuck, and in a completely foreign environment. He’s the stud who’s equal parts naughty and nice.
Yet, I found myself really enjoying both characters and the angsty, slow burn of finding the right timing here. The dialogue is clipped, but there’s something very alluring, sensual, and true nature about it.
He’s not giving her the all pass just because she’s been abused. Protective… yes. Patient… yes. But, he doesn’t hold his tongue on calling her out….
“You don’t get to be pissed about shit in my past, Em. Just like I don’t get to be mad about shit in your past. What I should be mad about is you thinking about me when you came on a finger that have another man’s ring on it.”
She’s been battered, but she’s not broken. She’s vulnerable, but she’s not hopeless. She’s taking help, but she doesn’t demand to be coddled.
I love that he’s man enough to apologize. I love that he openly doesn’t give two shits who knows how bad he wants her. Shit, can I have a Kincaid, too?
I plan to date her, seduce her, and make sure she knows she’s safe. I know she has to trust me in her heart before she can trust me inside her body.
More for the connection. I wanted a little more between chapters 16-18…. He’s on a mission, and she’s laying the foundation for her new life. I’d have liked to witness more texts between them to build the relationship. I didn’t need a lot… that would’ve destroyed the author’s pacing… but I would’ve liked to have witnessed just a little normal get to know you shit.
The Bunny drama was yet another stereotypical plot device, but it worked here. I felt his frustration with the lack of trust, but I also felt her insecurities given her past and assumptions given the environment.
Add a few smiles and laughs - the MMC striptease … omg I was smiling like a fool. Kid is also a great character to make you smile. I’ll enjoy reading his story!
Anyway, somehow… this author took a very done-to-death storyline and made it interesting, sexy, and enjoyable.
I was frustrated with the FMC on occasion, but it was easy to cut her some slack and go with the beauty of Kincaid loving her through the uncertainty.
Kincaid’s sexual history needed a little explanation. Like why this and not that. Don’t shit where you eat is the idea… I guess… but if I was the FMC, my first question would’ve been why hadn’t he f’d the club hos.
The end doesn’t have all the stupidity most authors add in for drama. No SAF kidnapping or TSTL moments. I love that the good guys have a plan and are smart. Yet, it’s also a tad anticlimactic… happens too fast and without a real buildup of the scene.
I appreciated the final few pages, too. Not all M clubs are about running and banging shit. Some make legit differences in their communities.
My one plot complaint is that the conversation about “family” … kids…. never came full circle. I wanted an epilogue that centered on their future. I guess because this is a series of interconnected books, their future will be told there? I dont know?
Writing
Perfect pace.
Nice story.
Fab MMC for the swoon and an FMC that you want to start her real life anew.
Great grammatical editing.
Easy scene transitions and dialogue reading.
One technical complaint…
It’s not bad, often, nor distracting, but there are a couple of times that the author overlaps the MMC/FMC voices, losing the unique phrasing and individuality of each. Example:
I never thought he’d be a glutton for punishment, but he’s like a fungus you can’t get rid of. <<<—- MMC’s thoughts.
He helped me, and I clung to him like a fungus and came here with him. <<<—- FMC’s thoughts.
^^^ It’s not even something most readers would notice, but I’m a little OCD;))
OVERALL
Enjoyed it. Plot is nothing unique or monumental, but it’s entertaining enough and has likable characters. It’s not dark. The FMC leaves an abusive husband and there are two deaths by the end of the book, but the main storyline is about the developing relationship between the MCs. Readers will swoon over the MMC patiently chasing her and centering his future around her needs.
My only issue is I wish I had read this sooner. I purchased this book in June of 2018 and it was amazing. Love me some Diego. Emmalynn was an awesome heroine also. And can I just say Matthew Hosea on the cover made it even MORE PERFECT!! Can’t wait to read more from Mrs James.
Way too much other woman drama for me. If I were the heroine I would have quit on this guy a long time ago. I will try the next book to see if it is better before giving up on the whole series.
Diego "Kincaid" Anderson is a man who will not tolerate the abuse of women and when he sees Emmalyn Mikaelson being abused by her husband he offers her an out. Kincaid finds himself fiercely protective of Emmalyn and he wants her. Being forced out of town for work, Kincaid keeps Emmalyn protected while getting to know her. Falling hard for the skittish woman, he goes about wooing her but the threat to her has amplified and Kincaid needs to figure out a way to end the danger once and for all.
I liked this one, will definitely be reading more in this series. New to me author and was thrilled I picked this one up. A bit angsty but overall I thought the chemistry was there and enjoyed the flow of the story.
I clicked this book for free and it was my first MC book I've ever read and it did NOT disappoint. Although Emmalyn got a little dramatic at times, I sympathized with her given her history. But Kincaid was everything you'd want in a man: protective, compassionate, heroic, strong, and sexy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and plan on continuing the series!
What I don't like about this book: - heroine is a victim of domestic abuse but does not act like one. It's like all those years of being mentally and physically abused have left no mark on her mental health, view of herself, etc. It did not make sense to me that she was terribly afraid of her husband, but she had no problem standing up to and defying the men in the motorcycle club.
- Instant love equals blind trust: We all see people that we don't know that we are instantly attracted to, but this doesn't mean that we make them part of our lives on the spot. There was no build up to the relationship between the hero and heroine. He hears her being abused, and he immediately decides that she will live him, he brings her to his home, and everyone accepts her as if they've known her their whole lives. What if she was a bad person? What if she brought trouble to their doorstep? It's not logical to insert every person we meet into our lives just because we find them attractive.
- the irrationality of the heroine: Emmalyn barely knows Diego for a few hours, and she is already acting as if they have been in a relationship for months or years. Here is someone who is married, and basically cheating on her husband, but she finds it hard to stomach that Diego had been involved with women before. She makes him feel bad that he had sexual relations with other women "before" he even met her. They don't know each other, but she expects some level of loyalty from him, even though he promised her nothing. Don't even get me started on the things that she throws fits over; things that could easily be explained if she would just give him the chance. But Noooo, she would rather just storm out and stop talking to him altogether.
- Heroine is ungrateful: the hero gives her shelter, food, clothing, and a job, without asking for anything in return, but she still acts like she owes him nothing. The author wants us to believe that she is a strong independent woman who owes no man, because she will pay him for everything. In these scenarios, people are usually grateful, and they don't act with attitude at every turn as if they are entitled to everything they got.
- why didn't they kill the husband? Why keep a potential threat alive even though they know he may come after her?
All in all, I did not like this novel. The heroine annoyed me, and many parts of the story did not make sense to me.

The cover is what first brought my attention to this book but when I read the synopsis I knew it was for me. This story sucked me right in from the very beginning and I have to say I loved the characters.
Kincaid was a great hero, he rode in to save Emmalyn from her abusive ba$tard of a husband and gave her the protection of his MC. There were a few times he made me so mad but other times he made me fall in love with his character so hard. Kincaid understood that he couldn’t rush Emmy and I think thats what made me love him the most!
Emmalyn had just been saved from her husband but she wasn’t ready to just jump into something new with anyone. She was pretty insecure and timid but once she got her feet under her she grew into her own person and showed her strength.
I loved the fact that the relationship between Kincaid and Emmalyn developed at a steady pace and wasn’t rushed like most other books. It was believable since Emmy had just gotten out of such a horrendous relationship.
This is first time I have read a book by Marie James but I have to say it won't be the last. I enjoyed her writing style it was easy to read and kept my attention through the whole story.
Kincaid wasn’t your typical MC book, these were a bunch of ex-military guys who loved the brotherhood the club gave them but they still worked for Uncle Sam.
This book was filled with so many different emotions, I felt each and every one of them alongside the characters.I’m hoping we get more from this bunch of Hot men and the kicka$$ females.
- Kincaid was a really good guy, the whole way through. He was the kind of hero you'd actually want riding into your life as an actual human being. - This was a quick, easy read, and the MC wasn't the criminal kind. That was a welcome break from my usual, and I enjoyed what the guys did for a living.
- I didn't think Emmalyn brought anything to the story. Apart from being the most beautiful woman in the world and people falling instantly in love with her, what did she have going for her? She wasn't engaging, funny, or smart. She didn't seem to have passions or dreams or skills. She was just a pretty face. I find that boring in any character. - The drama in the story was driven by Emmalyn's failure to communicate with Kincaid, and her misunderstanding of everything. Emmalyn is Romance Heroine 101: constantly falling for the most blatant ploys, doing nothing but looking pretty, and walking into every character trap. - Kincaid was constantly apologising, and as far as I could see - he'd done nothing wrong. Like... ever.
There was nothing wrong with the book as such. But nothing about the heroine stood out, so she was boring. A boring heroine and a standout hero still equal no more than an average read, for me.
If anyone wants to make a (tasteless) romance parody comedy movie, your script is here.
The writing is atrocious. One run through a grammar check would’ve at least caught the repetitive words which were repeated repetitively in the same repetitious paragraph.
One thing in this book that really got on my tits was this quote, spoken by the heroine, “I can’t even decide what is more detrimental, the abuse from Bobby or the emotional distress from the last twelve hours.” Bobby is the husband she left because he beat her for years and drank all her earnings. In the last 12 hours, she was rescued by Kincaid, the president of a biker club that turns out to be a group of ex military working as contractors for the US government—no drugs, no criminal enterprise. Kincaid has protected, clothed and fed her, and she fancies him. At the club, she finds a club girl who has given him some blow jobs and is trying to stake her claim on him. Twelve hours rescued from an abusive husband, and the author has the main female character saying she just doesn’t know whether this situation is more distressing than years of physical domestic abuse. Stupidity is a thing, and this is it.
Aaron Shedlock narrating is the reason I bought it and the only good thing about the book. Kasha Kensington has a pleasant voice but reads like she’s selling you something for three easy payments of $19.95. Chill out and tell me a story, lady.
I absolutely loved this story of Kincaid (Diego) a super alpha, protective, but caring and sweet "..big, bad*ss biker, former Marine" who finds himself "getting lost in the blue eyes of a woman in a bar"
"I have to remind myself to mind my own business. I can’t save every woman. Hell, I couldn’t save the one I loved from birth, and certainly I can’t save someone who has no will to save themselves."
Emmalyn is trying to survive in an abusive marriage. She has lost all connection with any friends and family and has begun to give up any hope of a life of freedom. With no self-esteem, she doesn't even allow herself to dream of someone who could love her and truly want her for herself.
"He leans in to kiss me, and I part my lips instantly when his warm mouth touches mine. His tongue is soft and coaxing as it sweeps across mine. This kiss isn’t one that leads to sex; this kiss is a promise of what’s to come. It’s a hint of the love we will share as the days, weeks, and years come and go."
Marie James has become a new go-to author for me! I can't wait to read more from the Cerberus MC's!
“His intentions are as obvious as the bat signal flashing across the skies of Gotham City…”
“This man is intoxicating, and my senses go berserk when I’m touching him, almost as if I short-circuit when he’s near.”
“Freedom. A simple word so many people take for granted. Seven letters, that to someone who never had theirs threatened, mean absolutely nothing.”
My Review:
Kincaid is not who or what he seems. He looks like a muscled up and heavily tattooed biker. And - he is - but that is not all. He is also an ex-military tactical specialist who, along with his crew, continues to help law enforcement and government agencies get the job done when no one else can. He is also a moral and thoughtful sweetheart who spends a good deal of his energy protecting others, with a particular soft spot for the used and abused. And he is also an excellent dancer, considerate lover, and a beautiful and sculpted god inside and out - his appearance reportedly sends women into a swoon. Where or where can I get one of these?
Marie James's new Cerberus MC series #1 Kincaid is a very well written gripping read.
Emmalyn is a beautiful woman but is trapped in a very abusive marriage and sees no way out other than the day her Husband finally kills her.
Kincaid (who we have met briefly in The Hales Series) is a hot good looking sexy alpha male ~ President of the MC along with the other members (Brothers) all drool worthy ex Marines.
Kincaid and Em are connected from the first look into each others eyes.
Will Kincaid and his club take Emmalyn in and keep her safe ? Will Emmalyn open up add trust again ?
Kincaid contains lots of drama, twists, betrayal and very hot sex scenes that will leave you hot and begging for more.
Why did I wait so long to read this book?? I love biker romances and this one, while it had a lot of the same elements as most of the others I have read, also had a lot of sweet and goodness mixed in with the ugly. An MC made up of ex-military men who fight for what's right and rescue those in peril sounds like a good thing (although I wasn't a fan of the club whore situation) and with the exception of a few small issues and a heroine who could be a bit too wishy-washy at times, I really enjoyed this story and read it in one day. Lots of violence, steamy sex, emotional moments and nail-biting intrigue. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
***** 4.5 ***** "survival and a fight for love" stars
I DNFed this book at 82%. I just can't with Emmalyn anymore. She is the most unreasonable, jealous female main character that I have ever encountered before. It was beginning to just be a story consistent of scene after scene of her getting jealous at him over easily explainable things. And the instances were almost the same thing over and over again. It was beyond annoying. You'd think after 2 instances of this, you'll take a moment and let him explain or at least give him 2 minutes to convince you. Nope, she is the queen of running away and then forgiving so easily 2 hours later.
SO ANNOYING AND FRUSTRATING! Sad because there were some characters that I would of enjoyed getting to know more.
