The eponymous pout-pout fish returns in this, his fifth picture-book adventure, setting out on his very first vacation. Carefully packing everything he will need, Mr. Fish embarks on his travels, only to find that the journey is a little less smooth than expected. Still, he manages to make it to his destination, only to discover that he has left his snoozy-snuggly companion at home. Is vacation ruined...?

Like its predecessors, The Pout-Pout Fish, Far, Far from Home features an engaging tale told in rhyme - the refrain runs: "I'm a fish who loves to travel. / I'm a fish who loves to roam. / And, I'm having an adventure / On my trip away from home!" - and bright, colorful artwork. It highlights the idea that even when we have left a beloved toy (or pet? it isn't clear) at home, we can still have an enjoyable vacation. Recommended to fans of the Pout-Pout Fish books, and to anyone looking for children's stories about learning to keep a positive outlook, when going on vacation.

This is a great addition to the Pout Pout series. I like this more than the other ones so far. G loved it and made me read it four times in a row. And now we are on a search of what all the other sea creatures are called in the book!

It gives great perspective on how to deal with things when they do not go as you wanted or expected them to go, but to still make the best of them and see the silver lining. Which I think is great for kids to learn at a very early age.

I was adding this book to my library system when I looked inside at the illustrations. They are wonderfully cute so I had to read the story.

The Pout-Pout Fish, Far, Far from Home is about a fish on vacation who runs into some "bumps" along the way. He recovers as we all do but when he reaches the hotel, he realizes that he has left his favorite toy that he snuggles with.

Pout-Pout then does a deep breath to calm himself (which might be helpful for some children) and he thinks...
"I miss you very much.
I don't like that we're apart.
But until we're back together
I will hold you in my heart."
This helps Pout-Pout go to sleep and carry on with the rest of his vacation.

Review originally published on my blog, Nine Pages .

Now cheered up, the Pout-Pout Fish is going on his first vacation. There’s a new mantra in this one: “I’m a fish who loves to travel. I’m a fish who loves to roam. And I’m having an adventure on my trip away from home!” The Pout-Pout Fish encounters several bumps on his trip but is always helped by locals who know the area. Despite its hiccups because of the help that he receives, that part of the adventure is fun. But he arrives at his destination to find that he forgot the creature (part-nightlight, part-stuffy, maybe a pet? Don’t look into that too carefully, I guess) that he sleeps with, and it seems that the vacation is ruined, but he decides to hold it “in his heart” though they’re apart and ends up having a fantastic vacation. And his creature is at home, waiting for him, when he gets back. This book covers several problems that a child could encounter while traveling—though some of the problems are more likely to be problems for adults than for children (detours, specifically)—and that makes it relevant. It fills a niche—two niches with the problem too of a missing sleep-buddy, which can happen while traveling but also at home.

While taking a trip can be exciting, sometimes it can be a bit scary to travel somewhere new, especially when things don't go as planned. In this story told in rhyming text, everyone's grumpy fish, Pout-Pout Fish makes careful plans for his vacation and then sets off, ready to have fun. Even though some detours and mishaps cause him a little bit of concern, he manages to soldier on and only has a meltdown when he realizes that he has not packed his "snoozy-snuggly" (unpaged). Although his first thought is to rush back home, he draws strength from within and by thinking about his friend waiting for him back home, and he decides to keep traveling. Young readers are sure to be reassured about their own new experiences or trips from this beloved fish's journey. Anyone reading the book will appreciate the reminder that trips often have bumps and detours and things never go quite as we plan, but we can still have a wonderful time and learn something along the way. Even being far from home need not mean that someone is completely alone. There are always new friends to meet and new foods to try and places to visit. The softly-colored illustrations contain interesting and original depictions of sea creatures and underwater destinations.

In this fifth entry featuring the Pout-Pout fish, Mr. Fish actually looks pretty cheerful as he prepares to go on his first vacation ever. In a rhyme that he repeats several times during the story, he states, “I’m a fish who loves to travel. / I’m a fish who loves to roam. / And I’m having an adventure / On my trip away from home!” His enthusiasm is tested as Pout-Pout runs into the kind of setbacks that often occur on trips: a detour, inadequate snack, items missing from his luggage, and homesickness. Readers get the opportunity to see Pout-Pout overcome each setback, sometimes with help from locals, sometimes by making his own adjustments, the biggest being when he discovers that his "snoozy-snuggly" that helps him get to sleep was left behind. His first inclination is to end the trip immediately to return home for it. Instead, he decides it’s enough to hold the missing item in his heart. He winds up staying and having a fabulous time. I’m not a huge fan of the singsong rhyme, but it doesn’t seem to bother Pout-Pout’s many fans.

The Pout Pout Fish is taking a vacation. But sometimes the journey tries its hardest to ruin your Trip Trip.

Moral: Make the best out of your vacation.

Length: This was comfortably longer than the last Pout Pout Fish book we read and I welcomed the plot development that it brought.

Favorite Line: “I’m a fish who loves to travel. I’m a fish who loves to roam. And I’m having an adventure on my trip away from home.”

Overall Impression: I’m not going to ever be a Pout Pout Fish die-hard, but this is a welcome addition to the series. We’ve had our own trial and tribulations road-tripping with Mavis (catching poop out of her butt on a diaper change on the side of the road in the Tetons will always be a vivid memory), so PPF’s breakdown at all the struggles is very real. But he gets the right mindset (with an apparent memory from an earlier book - great product placement, by the way) and makes the most of it. He’ll look back on this trip and remember all the nice fish he met along the way and think of it fondly. So will we.

Diesen, Deborah The Pout-Pout Fish: Far, Far from Home Illustrated by Dan Hanna PICTURE BOOK Farrar Straus Giroux, 2017 $16.99 Content: G.

Pout-Pout Fish plans a vacation and packs his bags. As he is traveling to his destination he has a few detours and bumps in the road, but other fish help him and he figures it out. When he arrives at his destination he realizes he forgot his snugly toy that he likes to sleep with, he takes a deep breath and calms himself down and goes to sleep. He spends the rest of his vacation having lots of fun adventures.

This is the first Pout-Pout Fish book I have read, and I can’t wait to read the other books in the series. What a great message for kids-that sometimes life doesn’t go as planned, but when we are flexible it can still be fun. Adorable illustrations with cute humorous details throughout.

This fish is going on an adventure, the book follows that fish though its journey. He has never traveled alone before and gets frustrated through the trip, but finally he makes it to his destination. At one point he wants to go home because he misses home and forgot his "snoozy - snuggly" but instead he stays and does his activities as planned. This is a important lesson that can be learned by young readers because often times you may be discouraged or forget something dear to you at home but that doesn't mean that you give up and go home. You learn to still have fun and go on through your adventures. This can also be used in a classroom to teach students that even though things may not go as planned and you forget things it is important to follow through and enjoy your time.

In this installment, Pout-Pout Fish decides to go on a traveling adventure. He has planned the trip and packed carefully, or so he thought! Pout-Pout experiences that spontaneity and detours are part of any traveling adventure. One of the bumps will resonate with young readers, Pout-Pout forgot his best friend at home, and has to make a decision: turn back home, or keep his friend in his heart and mind and finish enjoying his adventure? The illustrations are full of little details that will make older readers giggle and the messages: things don't have to go as planned and you can enjoy activities without your friends, is gently exposed to the reader.

I knew this was a series when I picked it up, but I had only read the first one. It surprised me that even though Mr. Fish wasn't pouty anymore at the end of the first one, they don't refer to him as the Pout-Pout Fish at all. Why are they still calling him that in the title, with no reference to it at all in the newer books? There were definitely situations in this book that would have someone pouting, yet because of the helpful people he runs into, he doesn't need to pout. The rhymes were cute and the lesson about things not always going as planned is good for little ones. Fans of the series will not be disappointed.

The Pout Pout Fish Far, Far from Home is about a fish who left his home on a vacation. He took a detour and then stopped to eat and then stopped when his luggage collapses and another fish helps him find a rest stop. At the rest stop he realized he forgot his stuffed animal and gets really sad but then he took a deep breath and calmed himself down. After his vacation, he was reunited with his stuffed animal. I really liked this book because it was cute and easy to follow. The pictures were also really creative and detailed. I would use this book in my classroom if we were talking about adventure or geography or maybe use it right before summer when a lot of kids will be going on vacation.

Wait, I'm confused.....he accidentally left his pet at home, and then decided not to worry about it? (Or is Snuggly not really a pet?) I mean, I think if you realize your pet didn't make the trip with you, it's worth some worrying and fretting over until you contact somebody to stop by and take care of it. And THEN you can relax and enjoy your vacation.

The illustrations were cute, and I liked the rest of the story. I can tell how jaded I am, because I kept thinking all these helpful creatures were trying to lure the fish off his path, but nope - just friendly folks.

I read this book to my daughter. The book covers the excitment of a fish going on a vacation. It cover all the features of waht a person planning for vacation goes through. It details the fact that the fish started the journey all alone, acts responsible and courages on its way to vacation, allthough, there were times when things did not turn out as planned. the important thing is Mr Fish had fun on his vacation and returns home with satifaction and joy.

I liked the pictures more than the story. It was just ok. This is a rhyming story about Pout-Pout fish going on a vacation. Nothing seems to work out right. It has a good theme. Look for the fish texting - funny! The recurring rhyme about leaving on a trip got kind of irritating after a while. The pictures were the best part of the book. Recommended for grades 3-5.

Pout-Pout fish has made plans to travel on his very first vacation. He packs his bags, and is on his way, but before arriving at his chosen destination he experiences detours, and other bumps in the road. This rhyming tale tells of how to make the most of every endeavor and that bumps in the road are all a part of the journey.

'Pout Pout fish took a deep breath to calm himself.' That could be very helpful for a child who is afraid or filled with anxiety on a trip! I did enjoy this addition to the Pout Pout fish books but my favorite is still the original!

As with other Pout-Pout Fish books, this is a fun read-aloud with a snappy refrain that will have kids reading along with the adult. We can all relate to Mr. Fish’s travel adventures and misadventures…especially the bout of homesickness (for me anyway).

We checked this one out from our library before going on a trip. My son adores Mr. Fish and his friends. He has a hard time letting them go back to the library! I think it was a good book to talk about travel and how you make the best of it, even if things go differently than you planned.

This board book version of the well-loved Pout-Pout Fish story follows Mr. Fish as he encounters some bumps while on his vacation. He is excited at first even while also being a bit nervous. But ultimately, everything works out just fine, and he's sure to take another trip.

The littles at my library LOVE Pout-Pout fish so I was happy to see a new one. Even happier that the theme is going on vacation since that is one of our upcoming storytimes! I think this will be a perfect read-aloud - especially since there is a simple refrain that pops up throughout the story.

I didn’t like this one as much as the other Pout Pout fish books, although it is still a good read. Mr. Fish overcomes obstacles on his first trip from home. He ends up coming to the realization that while not everything went to plan he had a great vacation.

It was another great adventure for Pout-pout fish. For snacks while being read to I ate puzzle pieces and worked off the calories by pulling other books off the shelf. Does make you wonder if it’s time for a name change for old pout-pout though.

The illustrations are just kind of odd. This is a relatively new release but the drawings look like they're straight from the 80s or something.
