Super Happy Party Bears #4

Super Happy Party Bears: Going Nuts

Rate this book
The squirrels of the Grumpy Woods have finally finished gathering their nuts for winter, when the Super Happy Party Bears find their stash…and eat the whole thing. To make it up to them, the bears show the squirrels another hoard they’ve found—one that belongs to the chipmunks!

Suddenly, the bears' huge appetite has caused an all-out civil war between two rival nut hoarders: the Puffy Cheeks (the chipmunks) and the Twitchy Tails (the squirrels). Can the bears prevent the Grumpy Woods from getting too nutty?

What do you get when you have a bunch of happy-go-lucky bears who are more than willing to share what doesn't belong to them, a bunch of scared-y-cat squirrels, militant chipmunks, and the grumpy residents of Grumpy Woods? Well, you end up with a RUMBLE (or NOT if Mayor Quill has his way, which he usually doesn't). The chaos and confusion (not to mention secret hideouts and nut stashes) makes this an amusing book to read. I had to wonder how things were going to turn out. This is a fun series for young readers with bright, attractive illustrations that bring it all to life.

This fourth title in a funny animal-themed series will amuse young readers for many reasons. First of all, the fact that a place called Grumpy Woods is where the story is set seems ideal, given the, um, grumpy animals living there. Secondly, the Super Happy Party Bears are just so doggone cheerful all the time, given to bursts of dancing and bouncing around the woods when they are most pleased. With easy-to-read text that is displayed in a large font size and ample colorful illustrations, the book encourages newly independent readers to practice their reading fluency. In the story itself, the Twitchy Tails are unhappy with the bears because they've been using all their nuts to decorate doughnuts. The bears don't want to leave the squirrels unhappy so they replace them. But as it turns out, those nuts belonged to other animals, the Puffy Cheeks. With Mayor Quill issuing various proclamations and Officer Jon and Officer Pouch--honestly, when I heard their names and saw their images I couldn't help but think of the classic television program from decades ago: CHIPS--surely there will be more nuts to be found. Although this isn't the kind of book that I would read for pleasure, being a lot older than its intended audience, youngsters will go nutty over its contents and do some dancing themselves in honor of those bears.

Not as laugh-out-loud funny as Book 2, but absolutely charming. And the residents of the Grumpy Woods are actually growing and changing!

More or less to the tune of The Christians and the Pagans by Dar Williams:

Bear friends making donuts, said, "We've found a cache of nuts today
We need a dance party to crumble them before we ship them far away."
The squirrels said, "We need those nuts to survive the winter freeze
Why'd you steal our nuts?, you bears!, and your friend the business bee?"

The squirrels and the chipmunks have an eternal beef
Exacerbated by the bears whose lives are a party
And just before a war erupted in the Grumpy Woods
More nuts were found, famine averted, party down!, we're good

The bears apologized and said they knew of ancient nuts in the Forbidden Cave
They went underground, Forbidden Dance!, and hauled the nuts away
Chipmunks appeared, they said those nuts were theirs and not the bears
Now they would starve unless they vanquished squirrels for what was theirs

The squirrels and the chipmunks have an eternal beef
Exacerbated by the bears whose lives are a party
And just before a war erupted in the Grumpy Woods
More nuts were found, famine averted, party down, we're good

So squirrels and chipmunks arm themselves for conflict and blood lust
The bears are on the squirrels' side but they aren't serious
Because they're Super Happy Party Bears and everything is fun
They find the stash, avert the war, and nuts for everyone!

The squirrels and the chipmunks have an eternal beef
Exacerbated by the bears whose lives are a party
And just before a war erupted in the Grumpy Woods
More nuts were found, famine averted, party down, we're good
