I was under the impression that the Bad Kitty books were all picture books. But this is more of a graphic novel for kids. I know this character and series are popular, but after reading this particular installment, I can't really see why. For one thing, Kitty barely features in the middle part of the book! That's taken up with a rather ridiculous plot about chickens trying to achieve world domination through #2 pencils. The story tries way too hard to be funny, and while it might tickle the funny bone of a child, it's not going to have much appeal for older readers.

Basically, Kitty fails at being a cat and needs to take a test to get her cat license back. So she goes to a class to prepare for the test. The test administrator turns out to be a chicken, and he demands that everyone in the class lay an egg in order to pass. Kitty must resort to cheating if she wants to remain a cat.

There's a rather confusing message about cheating here, as Kitty really had no choice (because the test itself was dishonest). The ambiguity might be okay in a book for adults, but I don't know what kids are supposed to take from this part of the plot.

The illustrations are amusing, but not all that interesting. I could take them or leave them.

I think I need to find the original Bad Kitty picture book. This graphic novel doesn't appear to be a very good representative of the rest of the series.

Four stars: A funny, and educational read that will appeal to both young girls and boys.

What happens when Bad Kitty isn't acting exactly cat like? He is sent to take a test to prove that he is really cat. What follows is mayhem and hilarity as Bad Kitty, Chatty Kitty and Uncle Murray, who stumbles in by accident while looking to renew his driver's license, learn what it is to be a cat. When they think they know everything, thanks to the teaching of Strange Kitty, they learn they must take a test. The test is to be administered by a reprensative from ProTest....errr.... TestPro, who isn't exactly an honest test monitor, and he might just have a secret agenda.
This is a funny tale that follows Bad Kitty as he unwillingly is forced to take a test to prove he is a cat. As an adult, I appreciated the fun illustrations, the funny puns and innuendos that kids will miss and the hilarity of poor Uncle Murray trying to get his liscense. It is a wild and wacky tale, with a great take home message at the end about taking tests.
The only slight niggle I have with this book, is that the author occasionally goes off on tangents and sprouts facts and information that is way over younger readers' heads. If you are reading the book you can stop and explain, but if a younger reader is reading on their own, they won't get it or they will skip it. The author sometimes forget who his target audience is. This book is recommended for readers 7-11, but I would say it will be better for the older end. My daughter is eight and she loves the books, but she doesn't get all the grown up facts that are tossed in. Still it is a fun book to read with your kids.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for this review.

EM read this at Summer Camp and the other night she made me read a few pages because she thinks it's hilarious. She told me that I need to read it and put it on my nightstand by my bed. I know that there will come a day when she won't want me to read chapter books to her anymore, but I never saw this coming....her recommending books to me!

I don't like that and kitty didn't apologize. Uncle Murray was the best. I don't like the chicken either. I liked Chatty Kitty. The mouse was funny about the red button.

I promised myself that this year I would count and write at least a little bit about every book that I read, including the ones that I read to my six year old daughter. She’s not an independent reader yet, so she and I do a good bit of reading together in the evenings when my older children have their nightly reading time. I let her choose the books for nighttime reading, so the books are really varied, but one of the authors that my children pass around with each other is Nick Bruel. They especially like the Bad Kitty chapter books, and last night Ellie and I read Bad Kitty Takes the Test together.

Bad Kitty has recently had a string of not very catlike behavior. So, as a surprise in the mail, she receives instructions that she has to go take a test to prove that she really is a cat. She ends up going to cat class is a couple of Chatty Kitty, Uncle Murray and a chicken wearing a cat costume. Will she pass the test? Is she really a cat?

Ellie says: “I’d give it 1,000,000 stars. I loved it. It was funny. My funniest part was when Bad Kitty tried to cheat and Chatty Kitty complained. It was really weird when the bird said, “Meow!” My favorite part was how somehow Uncle Murray’s drivers’ license came out of an egg.”

I say that Bad Kitty books really don’t disappoint. They are always amusing and fun. This one was a very humorous and not too subtle critique of standardized testing as well as a book about Bad Kitty. That’s something I can really get behind as a Mom, and it’s something that I think goes over the heads of my homeschooled kids just a little bit.

1. Category/Genre: Easy Fiction (Series) - Graphic Novel
2. Copyright Date: 2017 by Roaring Brook Press
3. Age Level of Interest: K-3rd Grade
4. Reading Level: 2.3
5. Brief Description: Kitty has an encounter with a couple of feisty birds, and then gets a letter in the mail telling him his license to be a cat is in jeopardy. What follows is a series of funny experiences as Kitty tries to get his cat license renewed.
6. Identify 2 Characteristics:
1. Graphic novels have multiple images on one page that are separated into panels and frames. This book by Nick Bruel is part of a series of Bad Kitty books and has the panels/frames of a graphic novel. The pictures are in black/white and the reader is not distracted by color in this book. The cover is very colorful, however, and draws the reader in with its graphics and pencil display
2. Graphica has typically focused on humor. Kitty gets into some funny predicaments, especially outlined in his letter from the Society of Cat Aptitude Management on Pages 22-23. Throughout the book, after he has arrived at the TestPro site, the representative is asking him some very humorous questions.
7. How well does book reach its intended audience? This book is for fluent readers. Students will probably be looking at the pictures more than reading all the words as some of the reading is upper level explanations. I didn't enjoy reading it very much myself (but, again, I'm not the intended audience).

Kitty gets a letter in the mail telling her that she has to pass the test or lose her license to be a cat! How will she overcome this challenge? Well, in her typical bad way, of course!

It's no secret I love the Bad Kitty books. This was as fun and silly as all the others, and I think kids (and their parents) will really love it. It's also a really great opportunity for a teaching moment about cheating, if parents and children read it together.

Spoilers below

Still, a fine entry into the Bad Kitty series, and I am looking forward to more.

Bad Kitty gets a letter informing her that her cat license has been revoked due to some recent un-cat-like behavior. Kitty has to go to a class and take a test to get her license back. But the class just seems to be one long string of practice tests, and the administrator seems a little bit...off.

Bruel is obviously taking the opportunity to make a little comment about standardized testing and also provides a lesson on why cheating is bad, but he also has created a very fun and humorous adventure for Bad Kitty. Bad Kitty follows in the footsteps of great comic cats in having her license revoked (Garfield had to face the Kitty Counsel once for his un-cat-like behavior). I loved that Uncle Murray accidentally ended up in the class too. Kids will spot the obvious intruder in the class even if Chatty Kitty, Bad Kitty, Uncle Murray, and the teachers don't. They can have fun guessing as to why that intruder is there. The way that #2 pencils, eggs, the intruder, and the test all tie together is quite creative. And the book made me laugh out loud more than once. Not quite as funny as Bad Kitty's bath adventure, but then I don't expect anything to top that, so this can be honored with a 2nd place in my favorites of Bad Kitty's misadventures. Recommended for classes that need to talk about cheating, and of course anyone who likes humorous and imaginative reads.

In this installment of the Bad Kitty Series, Bad Kitty has her cat license revoked due to a series of unfortunate events that are deemed “un-catlike”: a run-in with some birds, getting caught in venetian blinds, jumping on the desk and upsetting the plants, etc. She receives notice from SCAM (Society of Cat Aptitude Management) that in order to re-instate her license and cat-ness, she must take a special cat course and pass a test. As you might expect, Kitty is not pleased. The next morning, Kitty reports for cat class that includes Chatty Kitty, Mittens (a chicken barely disguised with cat ears), and Uncle Murray, who is there mistakenly to renew his driver’s license. Their instructor, Strange Kitty, takes them through their paces. First, he shows them a video created to help them pass the test. Next, he administers a number of pre-pre-pre-tests. When they are ready for the final, it is conducted by a chicken that presents them with a seemingly impossible and hilarious challenge. This irreverent take on the current test mania is filled with the usual Bad Kitty snappy dialogue, droll humor and quips. The Bad Kitty books are a favorite among my readers and this will be no exception. Their teachers will enjoy it on an entirely different level.

Part of author Nick Bruel's bestselling "Bad Kitty" series, Bad Kitty takes the Test provides plenty of laughs in this funny critique on standardized testing. Due to some rather un-cat-like behavior, the Society of Cat Aptitude Management (SCAM) has determined that Kitty must take an apptitude test and, if she fails, she will no longer be able to keep her cat privileges. This is a great book for kids who hate tests…and it delivers a positive message. A good education isn't just about finding the right answers, it's also about learning to ask the right questions.

Kitty's cat license is revoked after a string of embarrassing un-catlike behavior and is required by the Society of Cat Aptitude Management (S.C.A.M.) to take a test or stop being a cat. Uncle Murray takes a wrong turn. During a video on how to take a standardized test, Uncle Barney gives some fun facts about cats. Chatty Kitty talks about eggs, and Kitty finds a way to pass the test, and get her license back. Special Kitty gives a few pointers on how to prepare for a test.

Great book/series/author! My kids love this book and they have so much fun with the characters in the book. Not only is Bad Kitty hilarious but they really enjoy Uncle Murray. Who knew a cat needed a license to be a cat...lol. The very end of this book was funny too because Uncle Murray has an interview with the author and my kids love how the author makes it so interactive and fun. He is also right that kids take a whole lot of tests.

Bad Kitty’s cat license has been revoked due to bad cat behavior, so what on earth will she do to get it back? Well, take a test of course! I like how the author has Uncle Murray saying over and over again that he needs his drivers licenses. He finally got it when he lays an egg and it's in there, but he is so worried about him laying an egg and he think he needs to go to the hospital. He thinks he has medical issues.

I was pleasantly surprised by the humor in “Bad Kitty Takes the Test.” Based on the cover, it didn’t seem like something I would enjoy but I was wrong. I especially would have loved these books as a child. As an adult, I appreciated the learning opportunity that the factual information provided, too.

This is a great book for the upper level kids, it is a short chapter book. I love the message the story tells about a miss behaved kitty who gets her kitty license revolt after some bad behavior. I love how easy it was to read and the message it has behind it.
