Comfortable Distance

Dana Robbins needs a vacation from her girlfriend—and her life.

Used to working out her problems in her work, the successful syndicated cartoonist plans a solo summer vacation on a houseboat, hopeful that the separation will resolve her doubts about her future with Shannon. But Shannon's frequent calls demanding some resolution only heighten her turmoil.

Marine biologist Dr. Jamie Hughes sees Puget Sound in ways few other people do. The hours she spends diving its depths and running her laboratory absorb all of her focus and time. When Jamie meets the obviously distressed Dana at a friend's, she offers her scientific detachment to help Dana sort through her problems. Worrying about Dana's present is easier than examining her own past.

It seems like an ideal way to help Dana sort out her future, but as the summer heats up, the distance between Dana and Jamie is anything but comfortable.

I have the 🔥 for the Dr. Cozy story, a little overstretched and characters were not so established but a nice storyline all the same. It's more of a 3.5 for me.

Dana Robbins is taking a working vacation on a houseboat to work on her comic strip and take time away from her overly involved girlfriend. There she meets Dr Jamie Hughes, Marine biologist...

They do not get along, and Jamie accidently dumps Dana's keys in the drink. She tries to pay Dana the cost of replacing them, but she refuses. Thankfully Dana's landlady lives in the area.

Complicating matters Dana's niece Juliana arrives, wanting to do a sailing course, and she talks Dana into helping. They almost drown first time out, get rescued by Jamie.

Jamie likes the kids, and all three go sailing, later meeting her friends Dusty and Bo. But as this has gone one, Shannon has been calling and messaging to get Dana back.

When a mutual friend of Dana and Shannon dies, Shannon's awful side swiftly emerges. She also tries to threaten Jamie to stay away from Dana.

Dana Robbins decides to take a break from her girlfriend and live on a houseboat for three months. She wants to figure out what isn't working in her relationship and focus on her syndicated cartoon. She meets marine biologist Dr. Jamie Hughes who becomes a good friend. She is someone that can help sort through her feelings. This is a slow burn romance and I've not read this scenario where there is an ongoing relationship involved. The friendship with Jamie feels real but I was frustrated never get Jamie's POV. I was also frustrated at Dana not being able to set boundaries or see what is wrong with her current relationship. It did make sense by the end but it felt a long time getting there.

Kinda sweet. Would have liked to know Dr Hughes a little better. Her thoughts. Her heart.
