All William Lewis ever wanted in life, was to be an actor.
That is until he met Rachel.
Beautiful. Beguiling. Sharp as a tack. Rachel’s almost as appealing as a life in theatre. Unfortunate then that she happens to be married. To cut-throat venture capitalist Michael Richmond. So that’s the end of that.
Or is it?
Although Will’s never actually been on stage, or immortalised in celluloid, or appeared in a TV commercial, he’s still made a reasonable living out of pretending to be people he’s not. So when two of his ‘roles’ collide - seemingly by complete coincidence - well, maybe there’s a way he can be with Rachel after all…
From best-selling author Peter Jones comes this hilarious romp about love, truth, deception, and the spaces in-between.
Peter Jones started professional life as a particularly rubbish graphic designer, followed by a stint as a mediocre petrol pump attendant. After that he got embroiled in the murky world of credit card banking. Fun times.
Nowadays, Peter spends his days writing, or talking about writing.
He’s written three novels; a Rom-Com (Romantic Comedy), A Crim-Com (Crime Comedy), and a Rom-Com-Ding-Dong (A sort-of Romantic-ish Comedy, with attitude). He’s currently working on his fourth novel, which - if it’s a musical - he’ll no doubt describe as a Rom-Com-Sing-Song. (Spoiler: It isn’t).
He is also the author of three and a half popular self-help books on the subjects of happiness, staying slim and dating. If you’re overweight, lonely, or unhappy – he’s your guy.
Peter doesn’t own a large departmental store and probably isn’t the same guy you’ve seen on the TV show Dragons’ Den.
I’m a huge fan of the author’s self-help books, so it was a refreshing change to read his fiction work.
I normally avoid romance novels in general but in The Truth About This Charming Man, the emotional elements run seamlessly alongside the twists and turns of the story. I was totally hooked from the start when we are introduced to William Lewis, ‘Will’ to his friends, and Zlata Ruzencova, his outlandish Czech agent.
I adore Zlata; she is someone you would love to have in your inner circle of friends, and I loved the repetition of ‘I know what I mean’ as she misinterprets many an English phrase. The relationship between her and Will is well developed.
There are many characters in this book, but they all have an important role to play and are wonderfully unique. I loved to loathe Michael Richmond, sympathised entirely with Rachel, and totally fell in love with DJ, Ray and Kate.
I wasn’t very far into reading this book when certain plot lines seemed to be getting wrapped up. I wondered what could happen when everything was so organised, then BAM - a twist to the tale! These twists just kept coming, every time I thought I’d worked it out, there was another revelation and the pace increased.
This is one of those books that keeps you guessing until the very end. It’s not overly romantic and has plenty of action. It’s also highly amusing in parts. Would recommend.
I purchased and read this book as a member of Rosie Amber's Book Review Team #RBRT
What do you get when you cross a struggling actor with an Eastern European agent and add in some. 'acting jobs' that are more roleplaying than proper acting. Sprinkle in some dodgy businessman, a handful of wannabee actors, and some fraud? Oh, and don't forget a dash of good looking woman, too. This. You get this book! An entertaining read.
How I love discovering authors that are new to me. You never now what you are going to get, and in The Truth About This Charming Man, I read an incredibly enjoyably story, so long as you suspend pretty much most disbelief for the majority of the book.
What took me by surprise a bit at the start was that instead of chapters, per se, the book is split into Acts and Scenes, a bit like a play. In fact this would be a terrific stage play, I could really see it on a stage somewhere, as a farce.
It's a funny as it is bordering on the ridiculous in places, but its such a good upbeat feel to the book I was swept away in the story. Without giving too much away, its about William Lewis who is a struggling actor, who has never had an acting gig on stage, but has been paid for the past 4 years to act as someone's boyfriend for social occasions.
In a series of coincidences that are surprising, he is sacked from that job, bumps into the beautiful girl friend of his ex-girlfriend's boss, in another situation, is busted as an actor and then falls in love, with her, all the while as others think he is someone else.
There is a series of more and more implausible situations and scenes that just show how good an actor Will really is, and all the while there are multiple people in this set of acquaintances that all want revenge on one person - the charming man mentioned in the title.
This really is a hard book for me to describe as I don't think I've read anything quite like it, which makes if fabulously unique, and so enjoyable for me. Due to the amount of actors in the book, or wannabe actors, the style of it being set up like a play, without it being a script, makes perfect sense.
If you like comedy, farces, slightly over the top circumstances with elaborate revenge plots, and the finale is brilliant, with a reasonably small cast of key characters, then I would definitely recommend The Truth About This Charming Man. I will definitely be going back, probably quite soon to read Peter Jones' debut novel to see just he is capable of.
Thank you to Netgalley and Lawsome Books for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
A funny, uplifting, feel-good tale of dreams, friendships and an uphill struggle to triumph. Hilarious in places, touching in others and packed with a vibrant cast of characters you want to join the ride with, all the way willing them to win through. I loved it.
Hapless actor finds himself knee deep in the whopper of a caper involving one of the most interesting woman he's ever met and that's just his agent. This fantastical adventure is hilarious as it is fantastical. There are as many plot twists as there are characters and each scene delivers something new yet at a somewhat leisurely pace. Quirky fun.
This is a Goodreads Giveaway. A charming story about a would be actor. Instead of chapters, the book is divided into Acts and scenes. Very amusing and easy to follow about the trials and tribulations an actor has to go through to try and get a part.
