On her third failed marriage, thirty-four-year-old Sidney McQueen regrets her Ph.D. in Psychology wasn't useful in choosing husbands. She feels better suited choosing horses. When her divorce attorney advises her to disappear for a while, she heeds the warning. But can she disappear without a trace when her soon-to-be ex-husband, a powerful attorney with ties to Mexican drug cartels, is hell-bent to find her? He wants back what belongs to him--and it's not just Sidney he's after.
Forty-five-year-old Markus Yeager, former Marine turned CIA operative, has a top-secret past. Physical and emotional scars cause him to retreat to the small, west Texas town of Alpine to be near an old friend, the one person he trusts. Flashbacks haunt him. His purposefully crafted quiet life is up-ended when Sidney pulls into town, horse trailer in tow.
People from Sidney's past start turning up dead. Terrified, she questions whether the refuge she sought at Yeager's remote ranch is enough to protect her from the man she refers to as "The Devil." Her life-or-death situation draws Markus back into the violent world he thought he'd left behind, a world of weapons, drugs, money, and dangerous traffickers who'd put a bullet in your head while they mouthed their Hail Marys. Markus pursues and confronts the enemy head-on, but first he must confront the demons hounding his mind.
Thrown together in a cauldron boiling over with emotional tension and physical danger, Markus and Sidney allow their tentative bond to feed their individual needs. Once the murderer is apprehended, they breathe a collective sigh of relief, and their relationship, once governed by mutually imposed rules, intensifies. However, when it's discovered that the one in custody may not be the killer, chasing the truth becomes a frantic race against a deadly predator.
As a young girl and long before she could remember remembering, there were two things in T.K. Lukas’s life: books, and horses. And mostly, the books she read were about horses. When T.K. reached twelve years of age, her father surprised her with a birthday gift—her very own horse—a palomino gelding named “Thomas Dandy.” Dan, as she called him, was the first male to whom she gladly gave her heart. Unfortunately, it was a short love affair. Two years later after a family tragedy, she had to surrender Dan to another owner. Depressed and rebellious, at times the only things to get T.K. through her misery were the stories playing out in her head, fanciful tales of magical horses—fast horses with swift hooves and kind eyes. The horses she conjured in her dreams would always be at the ready to spirit her away from any sadness. At eighteen and graduated from High School, T.K. would journey through life wearing many hats, high-heels, and boots until finding her way home: ballroom dance instructor, US Air Force Air Traffic Controller (followed by a stint with the FAA), co-owner of a tree company, returning college student, Realtor, free-lance journalist, and finally, full-time novelist. Now, the circle complete, she once again focuses on the two things (er, three things) she loves: horses, books, and her husband and family. T.K.’s life experiences and world travels fuel the native Texan’s ever-expanding imagination, which she pours into everything she writes. Combining history with fiction, fact with fantasy, she delivers stories that, at some point along the narrative, always have horses making their presence known. Her first book, Orphan Moon, published in 2015, immediately climbed the charts and became an Amazon.com Kindle international best seller in several countries and on a variety of categorical lists, from U. S. Historical Fiction to Western Romance. Soon after its publication, Orphan Moon was chosen as a top-five-finalist in the 2015 Writers’ League of Texas Manuscript Contest, placing in the Historical Fiction category. An active member of the Historical Novel Society, Writers’ League of Texas, and Romance Writers of America, the author continues to hone her craft by attending conferences, workshops, and seminars. In conjunction, she works closely and tirelessly with editors to make sure that what she brings to the reader is a quality product. T.K. and her husband live in north-central Texas on a small ranch that they share with a variety of four-legged friends: equine, canine, feline, and bovine. Their three grown children are scattered across the globe. When not on horseback, T.K. enjoys international travel, snow skiing, photography, and collecting antique deviled egg plates. (The egg plates are a long story—please email her for that explanation. She’ll be delighted to share it with you, along with some favorite deviled egg recipes!) Goodreads, AmazonSmile, Barnes&Noble I received a free copy of this novel from T. K. Lukas. Thank you, for sharing your hard work with me.
April 5, 2017 This was a fast paced read and a well plotted novel. The story was intense and well presented. I will want to follow these protagonists into more adventures.
December 19, 2018 Yesterday was a nasty day, and I have a cold. I ran across this PDF looking for something I WANTED to read, and sat down just for a moment to revisit Sidney, Marcus and Trevor. Once started, I had to read the whole thing, again. And found this novel, taken with time to savor, rings more bells, beats more drums. I upped my stars from three to four and put these folks to rest again. But I will want to read it again, in a year or so.
December 11, 2022 - still awesome. And check out her novel Orphan Moon. Also a real keeper.
I very rarely take the time to review a book at all and this is my first time on goodreads, but I feel compelled to do so now, because this outstanding work is from what seems to be a new independent author. "IF THE DEVIL HAD A DOG" is an exceptional novel that defies simply categorization. My wife recommended it after finishing the book in less than two days--she simply could not put it down. I took a bit longer, but only because of a hectic work schedule. This novel is written by a woman and most of it written from the perspective of the female protagonist (Sidney), but it is not a book written just for woman. This is a real suspense thriller, very reminiscent of the Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn, only much better. The male "hero" is not super human or seemingly brainwashed like Jason Bourne. He is certainly a man's man (or more accurately a Marine's Marine), but the author portrays him in a way that anyone can relate to him. He is believable and reminds me of some men I served with. All the characters are well developed, the narrative is excellent, and the description of the heroin's horrific struggle with her evil soon to be ex-husband made my blood boil. There is a romantic undertone, but it supports the thriller/suspense plot rather than over overpowering it. In many ways "IF THE DEVIL HAD A DOG" reminds me of Eric Van Lustbader's "Ninja"--raw, violent, sexy, and spellbinding. I look forward to reading Lukas's other novel "Orphan Moon" in the very near future. I hope this fine independent author continues to write and publish, and that she finds great success--she deserves it.
Fleeing her estranged husband, a powerful lawyer with connections to a Mexican drug cartel, Sidney McQueen ends up in the small West Texas town of Alpine. She has been directed there to find Markus Yeager, a former Marine and CIA special operator, who operates a hunting camp and stables. When he first meets her, Markus’s suspicions are aroused, so he taps into his CIA connections to check up on her. What he learns sends chills through his body; what she’s fleeing is not just an abusive marriage, but a deadly danger that will pit the both of them against the deadly intentions of a band of criminals who do not hesitate to leave bodies in their wake. If the Devil Had a Dog by T. K. Lukas is a chilling, spellbinding thriller with a romantic underpinning that will keep you up at night—and, probably awake after you finish reading it. The action is well-crafted and nonstop, and the human dynamics are . . . well, just let me say, you’ll identify with all the characters in this book. Some you’ll root for, and others you’ll cheer when they get what’s coming to them. One of the best books I’ve read so far this year.
Reading a book with this level of action is common with me but the romance is not. That said I enjoyed the story and I LOVE READING BOOKS WITH A STORY SET IN THE AREA THAT I'VE LIVED ALL OF MY LIFE! I went to high school with the author and I'm grateful for her accurate portrayal of our region of Texas. I hope you will give her work a try and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Sidney McQueen leaves her home in Fort Worth, Texas, taking her horse, Mocha with her. She's running from her wealthy powerful ex Attorney husband, Winston, who she suspects of being involved with a Mexican drug cartel. Unsure of where to go, she checks into a hotel in Fort Worth where she meets ex-Marine, Trevor Nolan. When Winston shows up, Trevor suggests the perfect place for her to hide out: the Yeager Stables in Alpine. What follows is a gripping, engrossing read from start to finish. Even when I had to put the book down I was still thinking about the story and trying to predict what might happen next. The three main characters; Sidney, Markus and Trevor, are all intriguing and complex in different ways. Sidney, the protagonist of this story, is impulsive and determined: a born survivor. She is intrigued and curious to know more about Markus, the owner of Yeager Stables, who has a dark past and is something of a recluse. Trevor, an almost totally blind ex-Marine with a prosthetic leg is, nevertheless, an optimist, a kind-hearted man who helps veteran soldiers at the Wounded Warrior Project. The book is quite dark in places as it soon becomes clear that ex husband, Winston (who is answerable to a far more dangerous and violent man) is persistent in his search for Sidney. Her life is under constant threat and she has to rely on the help of Markus, a man struggling with PTSD. As in all good thrillers there's a constant tension running throughout the story. There are also some interesting secondary characters; Otto, possibly the only person Markus can trust, and Ruth, who runs the Maverick Inn with her grandson,Victor. I loved the way animals play an important role; Rex (Markus' guard dog) who becomes attached to Sidney, Gunner (Trevor's service dog and his constant companion) and, not least, Mocha, Sidney's beloved horse who she takes with her to Alpine. The settings of Fort Worth and Alpine are vividly described as is the countryside where Markus and Sidney go riding together. The author's previous work, Orphan Moon (a historical drama), was, for me, an outstanding novel. This book is a completely different genre (a modern day thriller) and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it as much. However; I loved the book: definitely another outstanding work.
I was so engrossed in this story that I missed an appointment. I am so glad there will be a sequel as the characters are outstanding! Hoping to learn more about Markus' past. I loved how he handled things in Mexico. That's my kind of hero. Will be watching for more.
What a thrilling suspenseful read. Even the bosses had bosses, and everybody snitched. But reading about the military ops and the off sanctioned ops were awesome.
“Friday’s as good a day as any to run for your life, Sidney McQueen said aloud for perhaps the hundredth time since fleeing Fort Worth.” And so the book begins. Thus we immediately want to know, who is Sidney? What and whom is she running from? Why the heck is she fleeing with a horse in tow? Does she even know where she’s running to? This Romantic Suspense and Thriller genre strings one along at a perfect pace – not so fast as to require flipping back to re-read events that lead into the current event, or so slowly that you keep muttering to yourself, “Get ON with it!” I learned in good time who the villains are, and even who the hero might be. It is a “cook the fastest supper you can for your family,” “leave the dishes in the sink,” kind of read. You have to get back to it. Somehow Lukas manages to maintain the pace and at the same time create characters so real you almost feel as if you are a voyeur. Even the bad guys and secondary characters have true-to-life idiosyncrasies. The plot is riveting and the locales, chiefly Ft. Worth and Alpine, Texas, lovingly and truly described. Being contemporary, the book is nothing like her first book, “Orphan Moon,” but it shares the same good writing and clear love of her craft. If you are in the mood for a soft, sweet romance, this is not the book for you as it features a bad-ass Marine, strong female, sex, and violence. As a stand-alone novel, it could be a movie. If we can beg her for sequels, it could be a thrilling TV series.
There is a good chance that much of the new Lukas novel will thrash you about on an emotional rollercoaster ride, and not just because you can easily identify with the well-developed characters. Sadly, far too many readers will likely be able to relate to some of Sidney’s harrowing experiences, but be aware that the main character’s plight may not be the only aspect of this novel that disturbs you. Some of the narrative is so chillingly authentic that, at times, you may stop for a moment and cautiously wonder how much of what you are reading is fiction.
No worries though, Lukas does not allow readers to suffer for long. She mercifully provides something that could actually be a new form of help for the masses, and could ease the minds of many who devour this delicious novel, long after the final page is turned.
To be fair, the entire novel is not harrowing. Parts will make you laugh hard enough to risk ripping a seam in your clothes, while other parts are surprisingly thought-provoking and fascinating, like the various means of communication that Lukas casually mentions between a horse and its rider, and the contrasting diversity of life in Texas.
If the Devil Had a Dog… full of surprises and highly recommended.
Intense from the get-go this story had me on the edge of my seat. We can all end up in a bad relationship and in retrospect would have made different decisions than the ones that caused us major heartbreak but for Sidney McQueen her wrong decisions may cause her serious harm, if not indeed her death. Anyone that gets involved in her life would also be putting themselves in peril but thankfully her new love interest is CIA trained and a handy man to have around in a scrape. Like most good stories, had no idea where the story was going until the end.
So interesting that I stopped everything to read cover to cover. This book was recommended to me by my daughter, normally it's the other way around. The characters are well formed and exciting. Also the added information about Wounded Warrior Project and the Texas Wolfdog Sanctuary was very useful. Mystery, Warriors, romance plus wolves and horses nothing was missed
I absolutely loved this novel. It was exciting from start to finish as I was unable to put it down (except I made myself put it down over the busy weekend). It really kept me on the edge of my seat and as soon as I finished a chapter, I had to start the next one immediately. I highly recommend this book! Superb writing.
A friend recommended this book for me. Based on the teaser I knew it was not my normal reading comfort.
Wow it was really good. I didn't want to put it down. This was not only a good read, but I couldn't put it down and read it in a day and a half. I would recommend to my friends.
This book deserves ten stars not only five it was that good. The character development was excellent and I especially loved the dogs. The roller coaster ride were on throughout the book came to a very satisfying and exciting conclusion. I highly, highly recommend this book.
Action packed great storyline interesting characters and lots of animals then you add some romance and you have a great book this is great reading for anyone
If The Devil Had A Dog by TK Lukas. Sidney McQueen flees to the small, west Texas town of Alpine to escape the most dangerous man she's ever known - her estranged husband - a powerful attorney with ties to Mexican drug cartels. When circumstances throw her into the path of Markus Yeager, he is immediately suspicious. And, when Sidney reveals she is in possession of something her soon-to-be ex is hell-bent to retrieve, Markus becomes embroiled in a world he thought he had left far behind. A former Marine turned CIA operative, Markus has a top-secret past with the physical and emotional scars to prove it. He is drawn into Sidney's life-or-death situation, where weapons, drugs, and money are the only gods - a world where dangerous traffickers stop at nothing to get what they want. As their mutual need draws them closer, Markus and Sidney discover a deadly predator whose web of treachery leads to terrifying violence. In a frantic race against time, can they stay one step ahead, expose a dangerous cartel, and bring a murderer to justice? Brilliant read. Loved the cover. 5*.
As much as I laugh at the non-word un-put-down-able, that is exactly what this book is! It's a military ops/romance (really!) Sidney is a successful psychologist who falls for a pushy lawyer who is a charming psychopath. They marry and she quickly discovers the honeymoon is over and starts procedures for a divorce. Psycho hubby goes ballistic and Sidney flees, but not before befriending a wounded combat vet, who helps her escape. I'm not saying anything more but this book has action, gentle romance, mentally and physically wounded soldiers, the CIA, FBI and DOGS AND HORSES! Great combo so get reading!
This is a fantastic story, a thriller without the advanced technology and hunt for serial killer overkill. This one is a great story about people in trouble working together, helping each other.
Naturally I was not influenced in the slightest that the story was set in Alpine, Texas, although I love that town.
Sidney is running and hiding from her dangerous husband, and a friend has made arrangements for her to hide at a remote hunting lodge/stables run by Markus Yeager, a former CIA operative. But Sidney and her friend are being hunted for other reasons as well.
I recently had the pleasure of diving into T.K. Lukas' gripping novel, "If The Devil Had A Dog," and it left me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. It's no wonder this book earned a well-deserved Gold Medal in Fiction - Drama at the 2017 Readers' Favorite Book Awards and secured a spot as a Semi-Finalist in the 2018 Kindle Book Awards.
The story revolves around Sidney McQueen, a woman desperately fleeing from the clutches of her dangerous estranged husband, a formidable attorney with ties to Mexican drug cartels. Seeking refuge in the small town of Alpine, Texas, Sidney's path crosses with Markus Yeager, a former Marine turned CIA operative with a complex and secretive past. From the moment they meet, the tension is palpable, and suspicions arise.
Lukas skillfully weaves a tale of suspense, danger, and unexpected alliances as Sidney reveals a possession that thrusts Markus back into a world he thought he had left behind. The characters are richly developed, each with their own scars and secrets that add layers of complexity to the narrative. Markus, in particular, is a compelling protagonist with a top-secret past that comes back to haunt him in unexpected ways.
The narrative unfolds in a fast-paced manner, keeping readers hooked with every twist and turn. Lukas expertly navigates a world where weapons, drugs, and money rule, creating a chilling atmosphere that adds to the suspense. The stakes are high, and as the story progresses, a deadly predator emerges, leading to a heart-pounding race against time.
What sets "If The Devil Had A Dog" apart is its ability to seamlessly blend elements of suspense, psychological thriller, and action. Lukas crafts a narrative that sinks its teeth into readers and refuses to let go. The chemistry between Markus and Sidney is electric, adding a layer of depth to the story beyond the suspenseful plot.
In conclusion, T.K. Lukas has delivered a masterful work of fiction with "If The Devil Had A Dog." This book is a must-read for fans of suspenseful thrillers, offering a perfect balance of heart-pounding action, well-developed characters, and an intricately woven plot. I eagerly await Lukas' next literary venture, as this one has left a lasting impression on me. Four stars well-deserved!
