Roberto lies in the dark, tensely watching the guard. He must escape! His grandfather, alone in the desert without water, will die if Roberto doesn't reach him soon. Will the guard never fall asleep?
This is another of my favorite horse books, and like my favorite Flash of Phantom Canyon, it deals sympathetically with the plight of Natives and of half breeds during the late 1800s. This particular story is about an Indian boy who survives alone with the help of horses. It is a great adventure story, a great horse story, and it is pretty humorous as well! I recommend it freely.
Texas, 1870. Ronnie is brave, smart, and resourceful. After losing his family, he makes a plan to take care of himself, taming wild horses. Ronnie's strong values keep him on the right track when he is confronted by adults who try to manipulate him. There are some episodes/vocabulary terms which are not culturally sensitive for today's world.
Fabulous story for young adults about Roberto, a Hispanic boy in the 1870's who confidently fights against all odds, including the warring adults (Indians and US army), wild horses and the elements to accomplish his dream.
Haven't read this in decades, but I do remember really enjoying it. Roberto's journey captured my imagination. Pretty sure the only reason I no longer have a copy is because mine fell apart.
