Oh boy. As far as Sisi biographies go, I really wouldn't recommend this as a book for starters. There's a few reasons why I have issues with the content of the book, but even on a more general level, this book is not fit as an introduction to the Sisi discourse, for two very important reasons:
- Bestenreiner assumes you already have some knowledge of the subject matter;
- And, more importantly, there is no real chronology in the book.
I'll explain this a bit more. Knowledge on the subject matter includes trivia. She doesn't just assume this about Sisi and her life, but about other people (vaguely) connected to her as well. For instance, see page 197 in this edition: "Dessen Nachfolger war im Jahre 1982 der uns bereits aus zahlreichen Presseberichten bekannte Fürst Johannes (...)", which implies that the reader should know one of the recent successors to the House of Thurn und Taxis. In this case, not knowing this bit of trivia doesn't impede understanding. There's more of these little things in the book though, and there they might be confusing for some readers.
But in all honesty, previous knowledge is almost a requirement to make sense of the build-up of the book. Bestenreiner doesn't follow a chronological order, what order she did follow, I don't know. I'll name a few examples:
- The chapter on Elisabeth's sister Mathilde is largely about Elisabeth and her life in Vienna. This takes up so many pages, that she writes that we should come back to the subject matter of Mathilde. This is not the only time this happens - Bestenreiner will be discussing person X, be reminded of something that happens to this person that relates to Elisabeth, write about this interesting tidbit, then come back to what she was writing about in the first place. It's confusing.
- Gisela's (Elisabeth's oldest surviving daughter) life is discussed in full without ever mentioning Rudolf (Elisabeth's son, of Mayerling fame). Rudolf is only discussed about 200 pages in, so at about 2/3 of the book. If you think she really gets into the interesting subject matter that is Rudolf, you are mistaken. Half of his chapter is dedicated to Emperor Franz-Joseph's "dear friend" Katharina Schratt. For no clear reason. This happens with a lot of the chapters.
Bestenreiner's way of building up her book is confusing. She does offer a timetable in the back of the book, but I think that a reader should be able to understand a non-fiction book without having to puzzle where each historical fact fits in. This is why I wouldn't recommend the book to someone who's not very familiar with the discourse. The lack of chronology makes the history more difficult to understand than it should be. Another downside of writing the book like this is that some events show up at two different places in the book. This means you sometimes read about the same event twice. In the same words. I don't think that's what you want as a reader.
The book has other 'faults'. Even though I can see Bestenreiner has researched a lot, you don't see a lot of sourcing throughout the book. Some direct quotes are quoted, some are not. About half of what gets quoted is from one of Brigitte Hamann's biographies. I understand, her books are great, but quoting so much from one or two books instead of from other (primary) sources, does not do a lot of good for your credibility. The frustrating thing is that you can see in the text that a lot of different sources must have been used for research, and yet not a lot of this shows up in the bibliography. Had I handed in a paper this way at university, I probably would've gotten some criticism on the credibility of my paper. I feel the same way about the research in this book.
Another thing I was surprised about was the lack of any of Martha Schad's research in the bibliography. Schad is also one of the more famous researchers in the Sisi discourse, and worked on Marie Valerie's diary. I mention this because the bibliography didn't even list Marie Valerie's diary as one of the sources, even though it had been quoted from in the book. Sloppy sourcing really doesn't add to your credibility!
I also have a comment about the book's title. For a book that's called "Sisi und ihre Geschwister", or "Sisi and her brothers and sisters", there wasn't an awful lot of information about Sisi's brothers and sisters in there. Most of this is truly about Elisabeth. Bestenreiner ends her book with the hope that this book will introduce Sisi's brothers and sisters to the readers. I would have loved if this were the case. But unfortunately, most of the information on her brothers and sisters in this was already known to me (the earlier mentioned Hamann biographies also discuss Sisi's brothers and sisters). I would have loved if this book really had discussed them in more detail, but was disappointed in this regard.
My last point of criticism was in the way Bestenreiner has written this book. It was subjective, probably to make the book a more engaging read. But yet I am not interested in Bestenreiner's interpretation of facts, or speculations of what might have been or how things could've been prevented. I just don't think it adds anything to the discourse, personally (though there is a lot of it in this particular discourse, so it's not entirely Bestenreiner's fault). I also could've done without the plethora of exclamation marks. Never seen this many in a non-fiction work before.
I don't mean to say I completely hated this book. I didn't... I'm still fond of the subject matter, so of course I didn't hate it. But I was disappointed. Please, skip this as your first Sisi book and buy Brigitte Hamann's biography, "Kaiserin Wider Willen / The Reluctant Empress", instead. It's a much better way to spend your money, you'll get the same information, but it's presented more logically. It's a much better place to start.

Protagonista di cartoni animati, film e serie tv, l'imperatrice Elisabetta d'Austria, meglio nota come la "principessa Sissi", è una delle figure femminili più amate e raccontate della storia moderna; figura che affascina ancora oggi adulti e bambini.
In questo libro l'autrice ha evidentemente voluto porre in risalto non tanto la principessa, ma soprattutto i suoi parenti che molto spesso sono oscurati dalla sua ombra. In particolare viene raccontato il vissuto dei suoi fratelli, delle sue sorelle, delle nipoti e dei figli.
La lettura del libro richiede particolare attenzione a causa dei nomi spesso uguali o simili dei componenti della famiglia, ma, a parte questo, risulta semplice e scorrevole.
In questo libro l'autrice ha evidentemente voluto porre in risalto non tanto la principessa, ma soprattutto i suoi parenti che molto spesso sono oscurati dalla sua ombra. In particolare viene raccontato il vissuto dei suoi fratelli, delle sue sorelle, delle nipoti e dei figli.
La lettura del libro richiede particolare attenzione a causa dei nomi spesso uguali o simili dei componenti della famiglia, ma, a parte questo, risulta semplice e scorrevole.

Ho trovato questo libro un buon inizio per entrare nel mondo degli Asburgo ai tempi di Elisabeth e Franz Joseph I. Non è tedioso e non si prolunga inutilmente su certe questioni, offrendo un quadro complesso ma completo della situazione di questa famosa – eppure anche misteriosa – famiglia.
L'unica pecca è che, verso la fine, alcuni salti temporali non sono stati di mio gradimento e hanno destato dei sentimenti di confusione nella mia mente mentre leggevo gli ultimi capitoli. Capisco però benissimo che, tenendo in conto della struttura di questo libro, era inevitabile che accadesse.
Per il resto, questa lettura mi ha soddisfatto incredibilmente e mi ha fatto conoscere diverse figure storiche delle quali ignoravo l'esistenza. Grazie a ciò mi sarà possibile approfondire e comprendere meglio questo periodo storico.

La historia de los hermanos y padres de Sisi. Es un libro que va y viene por los años describiéndonos el entorno familiar de Sisi, el cual muchas veces no era tan cercano. Desde sus hermanos hasta sus padres,en general el libro tiene algunos datos interesantes como los amantes del Emperador, la relación y suicidio del hijo y algunas recetas de como Sisi hacia sus rutinas. Por otro lado con ese ir y venir del tiempo se siente un tanto desconectado un tema con el otro.

Un saggio molto interessante che racconta tutto quello che circondava l'imperatrice: sorelle, fratelli, loro mogli e figli. Tutto questo crea un quadro molto vivido e fornisce un'interpretazione diversa del mito: una donna con problemi psichici che ha cercato invano per tutta la vita di sfuggire a sé stessa.

Procedendo nella lettura si ha conferma di quello che le prime pagine fanno intuire: dilettantesco.
Le parti più propriamente storiche sono imbarazzanti (le lotte di indipendenza italiane viste da una comare austriaca, bleah!), le parti biografiche vanno poco oltre l'aneddotica (con qualche sbirciata dal buco della serratura).
Che delusione!

rispetto all'altra biografia scritta sull'imperatrice Sissi devo dire che il registro utilizzato in questo volume è decisamente diverso: se l'opera di Nicole Avril era molto delicata nel trattare i temi riguardanti la vita privata dell'imperatrice, in questo caso il modo di scrivere dell'autrice è freddo e quasi giudicante.
Mi è dispiaciuta come cosa, anche perché voglio dire, si parla pur sempre di una persona morta, che ha avuto una vita normale comunque con gioie e dolori come tutti e che sicuramente ha avuto forti problemi di depressione. Detto ciò si può essere d'accordo o meno, si può condividere o meno i comportamenti di Elisabetta, però in questo modo così freddo e critico mi è sembrato un po' esagerato a dire il vero. Questa però è solo la mia opinione personale su come è stato scritto il libro.
Per il resto devo dire che lo consiglio: è stata una lettura molto interessante, soprattutto perché comunque tratta nel dettaglio le storie e le vite, dei figli e dei fratelli e delle sorelle di Elisabetta. Devo dire che forse una cosa che potrebbe non essere apprezzata è il basarsi dell'autrice solo su aneddoti per buona parte del romanzo.
Voglio precisare che chi davvero potrebbe apprezzare questo libri è chi già conosce buona parte delle vicende di Elisabetta e della sua famiglia e vuole approfondire il destino di quest'ultima.

Un livre qui retrace le destin de la fratrie Wittlesbach, qui n'a pas été de tout repos. Parfait pour s'imprégner des moeurs de l'époque (on se marie rarement par amour et les femmes ont la pression de mettre au monde un héritier) mais aussi le contexte politique (l'histoire de Sissi s'inscrit directement après le Printemps des Peuples de 1848 et suit l'évolution d'une Europe qui va tout droit dans la Première Guerre Mondiale, émaillée de nombreuses crises nationalistes à travers tout l'empire austro-hongrois).
Si on s'en tient à la description de l'auteur, il ne fait nul doute qu'Hélène aurait été meilleure impératrice que sa soeur. On retrouve un portrait de famille bien loin de l'image d'Epinal que nous ont légué les films d'Ernst Marischka, les parents de Sissi se détestaient, Franz est certes amoureux mais surtout marié à sa tâche d'empereur et (au travers de la description faite par l'auteur), Sissi est malade, malade d'être loin de chez elle, de devoir supporter l'étiquette de la cour mais aussi malade d'oisiveté.
Un bon condensé, toutefois on sent que l'auteur donne son avis (ce qui peut être gênant) et on est également dérouté par sa narration (bonds en avant, en arrière...)

Non consiglio di cominciare da questo libro se non si è mai letto nulla in precedenza su Elisabetta d'Austria. In teoria il volumetto dovrebbe raccontare le vicende, altrettanto travagliate e talvolta pittoresche, dei suoi numerosi fratelli e sorelle, ma nella pratica finisce per dare sempre molto spazio anche alla figura di Sissi. L'autrice non è però in grado di dare un filo chiaro alla narrazione. Non segue un ordine cronologico lineare, ma spesso va avanti e indietro, e accenna che di una determinata vicenda si parlerà successivamente. Non racconta in maniera distinta e separata la vita di un dato fratello o sorella. E' tutto piuttosto mescolato, e se non si possiede già un minimo di inquadramento sugli Asburgo e sui Wittelsbach ci si perde.

Interessante perché a differenza di altri libri l’autrice non si concentra solo su Sissi ma racconta anche la storia dei suoi fratelli e di alcuni nipoti.
Tuttavia, il libro risulta confusionario perché non segue un ordine preciso, né cronologico né personaggio per personaggio.
Le storie che si intrecciano tra di loro, il fare avanti indietro sulla linea temporale e il fatto che ci sono tantissimi personaggi che spesso hanno nomi simili se non uguali non rende molto godibile il testo e l’attenzione cala inevitabilmente.
Per questo consiglio prima di leggere una biografia dell’imperatrice Sissi più lineare e poi approfondire la vita della sua famiglia, giusto per colmare qualche curiosità in più.

Interessante da un lato perché narra la storia non solo di Sissi ma anche dei suoi fratelli e nipoti, alcuni dei quali hanno avuto una vita ancora più romanzesca di quella dell´imperatrice.
Purtroppo mi sono trovata male dal punto di vista cronologico. Le date, nascita e morte dei personaggi sono tutte confusionate e non si riesce a farsi un´idea complessiva di chi faceva cosa in un determinato periodo. In più avrei preferito un approfondimento maggiore sulla vita di Sissi (abitudini, pensieri, indiscrezioni) ..anzi a volte sembra che l´autrice la disprezzi!

La lettura è piacevole e scorrevole. Vengono raccontate le vite degli appartenenti alla famiglia natale dell’imperatrice Elisabetta. L’autrice sembra cercare in tutti i modi, e con discreto successo, di non dare giudizi sugli avvenimenti. Correda la narrazione di riferimenti alle fonti, mantenendo così l’indirizzo storico del libro.

Una biografia storicamente accurata per quanto riguarda la figura di Sissi e gli eventi storici, ma monotona a causa di un “tono” narrativo un po’ freddino e distaccato.
È verissimo che Sissi non fosse una brava madre, ne tantomeno una brava imperatrice. L’immagine che ne ricaviamo dal cartone animato o da certi film e serie tv non è veritiera, mentre questa biografia non nasconde i suoi lati peggiori. Tuttavia non segue un ordine cronologico per narrare gli eventi e questo rende la lettura confusionaria.
Inoltre non è una biografia incentrata solo su Sissi ma su svariati personaggi appartenenti alla sua famiglia e alla famiglia del marito, l’imperatore Francesco Giuseppe, cosa che ha fatto perdere un po’ il focus su Sissi, alla quale è dedicato al massimo il 50% di questa biografia se non meno. Peccato.

Sissi - Her Brothers and Sisters - A Tragic Bavarian Waltz (my attempt at translating the french tittle).
This is clearly a book not to be started unless you have a reasonable amount of previous knowledge on Sissi - and i do mean more than just the movies with Romy Schneider! (lovely yes, but fictional for a good part of it).
Although the subjects are absolutely fascinating, having led lives that would provide ample material of several movies or TV shows, it seems the author started with good intentions but somewhere along the way this went from being a book about Sissi and her siblings to a book about Sissi...occasionally mentioning her family.
Time wise there is a lot of jumping back and forth with each sibling, which is a bit confusing and frustrating because just when you start enjoying one life bam! chapter ends and suddenly its a different topic!
That being said, it is not a bad book, simply needed a lot of polishing and better planning...the subject is worth it and conducive to more research should you "catch" the bug and want to find out more about this unusual family.
Adding a note - most books about Sissi always end up resorting, in good part, on researching/reading Brigitte Haman's biography "Sissi, the Reluctant Empress". Now Hamman's book is great, don't get me wrong, but I wish there was more care and attention here with what sources were used, I can tell from a lot of other readings that she used much more than just Hamman but for some reason only Hamman is mentioned and/or extensively quoted...shame.

Questo libro, più che una biografia sull'Imperatrice Elisabetta, è una biografia molto ampia sulla famiglia dei Duchi in Baviera e sulle loro relazioni con il mondo. Ovviamente, la vicenda di Sissi è la più emblematica; chi più di lei, l'Imperatrice, è - ed è stata - ricolma di attenzioni? Eppure, tuttavia, non è quella che ha intessuto più relazioni con il mondo. Molto più di lei l'hanno fatto i fratelli e le sorelle i quali però sono - e sono stati spesso - messi in ombra dalla grande e singolare personalità dell'Imperatrice. Io ho cominciato questo libro con la volontà di leggere riguardo l'Imperatrice Elisabetta d'Austria e, devo dire, ne ho ricavato poco se non qualche curiosità in più; però devo ammettere che una panoramica generale potrà essermi d'aiuto nel momento in cui affronterò una lettura più approfondita riguardo questo affascinante personaggio. Stilisticamente posso dire che il libro è molto scorrevole (io l'ho letto in 2 giorni) e corredato di un gran numero di fonti giornalistiche (che io apprezzo molto e leggo con gioia), diaristiche e iconografiche; devo dire però che qualche volta si scade gratuitamente nel pettegolezzo e questa è una nota negativa che stava per influenzare la quarta stellina.

L’imperatrice Sissi è una delle figure femminili più amate e raccontate della storia moderna, una personalità contrastante: bellissima e baciata dalla fortuna ma terrorizzata dalla vecchiaia e dalla morte, zia affettuosa e partecipe ma madre fredda e lontana, fragile e anoressica. Una vita scandita dall’alternarsi di felicità e dolore.
Questo saggio è molto interessante e si fa leggere volentieri.
Alle vicende personali degli Asburgo sono affiancate anche le vicende storiche di quel periodo, senza però entrare nei particolari e senza appesantire e rendere tediosa la lettura.
Non ci si deve aspettare però un saggio riguardante solo la regina Elisabetta d’Austria, anzi la sua vita è trattata in modo piuttosto approssimativo e non è il fulcro della narrazione. Erika Bestenreiner ricostruisce piuttosto le vicende meno note, ma non meno tumultuose e singolari che caratterizzano le sue sorelle, figlie, figli e nipoti.
L’unica pecca sono i salti temporali troppo confusionari. Le vicende non sono narrate in modo lineare ma saltano di parecchi anni in avanti e indietro generando spesso confusione e disorganizzazione della narrazione.
Consigliato a chi conosce già almeno in parte la vita dell’imperatrice Sissi e vuole approfondire la storia degli Asburgo.

I am very interested in Sissi's history and life, so when I found this book I decided to read it. Unfortunately, it wasn't very good. It offered some basic facts on Sissi's life, which an interested reader should already know, then it went on with the lives of Sissi's brothers and sisters. Anyhow, it didn't really get into great detail: It seemed as if the author had got tired of looking for new and interesting facts about the Wittelsbach family.

8 Geschwister - und alle haben mehr oder weniger Pech im Leben und der Liebe - und nur einer, Carl Theodor, macht sich als Arzt wirklich nützlich. Insgesamt ein Beleg, dass man Monarchie und ihr ganzes Drumherum nicht wirklich dringend braucht.
