About the author

Gordon Williamson was born in 1951 and currently works for the Scottish Land Registry. He spent seven years with the Military Police TA and has published a number of books and articles on the decorations of the Third Reich and their winners. He is the author of a number of World War II titles for Osprey Publishing.

Interessante Kreuzung aus Historie und Lexikon, zahlreiche Fakten, die man immer mal wieder braucht, wie z.B. eine bestimmte SS-Division, ihre ethnische Zusammensetzung oder ihren militärischen Wert bzw. ihre prominentesten Greueltaten lassen sich so schnell nachschlagen.
Dasselbe gilt für die eingesetzten Waffen, sei es aus deutscher Produktion oder mehr oder weniger gern genutzte Beute. Auch das Wirtschaftsimperium ist leicht zugänglich aufgeschlüsselt und ziemlich brauchbar, wenn man in einem Roman über den zweiten Weltkrieg oder das Dritte Reich
über irgend welche Zusammenhänge stolpert, die der Autor manchmal selbst nicht so recht durchschaut hat. Gerade in der Frühzeit sind Williamson auch ein zwei kleine Fehler unterlaufen, Freikorps und die rechte Szene der Jahre bis 1923 sind auch ziemlich verwirrendes Gebiet.
Die Darstellung ist in leicht lesbarem Stil geschrieben, dafür mit ziemlich vielen Fakten gesättigt und lässt sich, aufgrund ihres teillexikalischen Status nicht so leicht wegschlabbern wie Heinz Höhnes Bestseller Der Orden unter dem Totenkopf.
Insgesamt handelt es sich aber, so weit es das Kriegsgeschehen angeht, um eine durchaus positive Würdigung der SS, an die sich kein deutscher Historiker gewagt hätte. GW lässt zwar kein Massaker an Zivilisten oder Angehörigen von Kriegsgefangenen aus, so wenig wie Einheiten ohne großen militärischen Wert, die sich nur durch Grausamkeiten ausgezeichnet haben, singt aber auch einige Heldenlieder, die für die Ohren meiner Generation fast zu schön sind, um wahr zu sein.
Der frühere Spiegel-Start-Autor Höhne, der viele alte Kameraden selbst ausführlich befragen konnte, ist in Sachen Faszinationsvermeidung sicherlich auch kein Ausweg, da viel von dem Geist, der die Angehörigen der SS angetrieben hat, permanent unterschwellig mitschwingt.

Bought this book on a recommendation from some folks that it was a good source of info on the SS and all its separate divisions. I can say that it certainly was, in fact I was rather surprised by some of the things I learned (which debunked some of the common myths about the SS as a whole). Now, I won't say it was an exciting read as it certainly was not that; info was presented in a dry, straightforward manner reminiscent of a history book.

In conclusion? Excellent book from a historical perspective, and I was told it's one of the best out there. Check it out, if you're into that sorta stuff.

The book was really facinating and I learned a lot about the SS. It was a really long book and heavy to carry about but it was all worth it in the end. I am a history buff and this expanded my knowledge about Hitlers true intentions and what he did with these elite soldiers. One reason that my rating is this high is about how clear and easy to follow this book was. I not only learned about the general army but at the end it had the biographies of all of the captins and above of the SS. That is why this book was very good.

A good ref book on the SS and its history, from beginning to end. The chapters are straight forward enabling one to easily jump to the section required. The book illustrates well how the SS went from a die hard Germanic bodyguard to a group of men who joined due to the smart uniform and better pay. Dispeling many myths and even looking into the foriegn elements of the SS and book just about covers everything SS, although some sections are naturally more in depth than others.

Nicely-presented book, mostly pictorial, of some of the worst of Hitler's evil "weapons systems," the SS troops. Many illustrations I hadn't seen before (which is saying a lot), but a lot I had (ditto).

Recommended for those interested in the WWII European campaigns and model-builders of same.

Książkę ukończyłem czytać po blisko dwóch latach, przy czym jej drugą połowę przeczytałem – po długiej przerwie – w dwa dni. Główną przyczyną takiego stanu rzeczy był w moim odczuciu zbyt encyklopedyczny charakter książki i wynikająca z tego konieczność "odetchnięcia", zrobienia sobie przerwy po przeczytaniu pierwszej połowy. W książce jest masa informacji nieprzydatnych z punktu widzenia przeciętnego czytelnika – mnóstwo dat, nazw dywizji i korpusów, szczegółów technicznych itp. Z jednej strony to dobrze – czytelnik pragnący pogłębić swoją wiedzę historyczną będzie zadowolony. Z drugiej strony to źle – czytelnik pragnący po prostu ciekawej lektury będzie znużony nadmiarem szczegółów. Książki nie czyta się lekko i przyjemnie, ale można z niej wynieść wiele istotnych faktów – o ile czytelnik sięga po tę książkę z takim zamiarem. Natomiast sięgając po nią z zamiarem czytania dla relaksu można się zawieść.

A good, authoritative book on the SS as a whole organization, as well as equiptment profiles, campaign details of the Waffen-SS, and a very useful appendix listing many key players of both the Allegmaine-SS and Waffen-SS. The author looks at the SS objectively, giving credit to the Waffen-SS remarkable military feats while still addressing and condemning the multitude of atrocities committed by both halves of the organization. A must read for anyone researching the SS.
