AL is the story of a T. Rex who doesn’t like meat. He’s different. He’s vegetarian. And that makes him unpopular in Prehistoric Valley. But maybe what makes him different is what everyone needs when a bad storm traps everyone in school, and nobody but Al can think of a way to get the giant leafy tree with tasty leaves out of the way so everyone can escape!
Kids and adults will recognize the storyline: Main character has a quality that sets him apart from the rest of his community. They laugh at and ostracize him, but then one day they are in trouble and it's up to the main character to use his special quality to save the day. Lessons are learned about respecting others' differences.
Although the story is one of the most common in kids' entertainment, this is still a cute story with funny illustrations. It's gentle and silly enough to appeal to the most mainstream audiences. Kids who are vegetarian or have a veg classmate will especially benefit from this book.
"Al was a T-Rex who didn't like meat." Whoever heard of such a thing? But that didn't stop Al from embracing his vegetarian self. Even though the other T-Rexes made fun of him, he kept munching on salads and strawberries. In the end it pays off. Al saves the day and becomes a hero.
Although the story is short, the message is a good one: Be true to yourself and don't worry about what others think. Suitable for children ages 3-7.
Al the T-Rex does not eat meat. His favorite food is strawberries. Inclement weather left his classmates stuck in school when a tree fell in front of the door. The dinosaurs were hungry. Al ate his way out since he enjoys plants. In doing so, he freed all the dinosaurs from school. Al’s classmates were happy to leave, and shared their appreciation with him by bringing him strawberries.
The children’s book “Al: The Story of a Vegetarian T-Rex” by Ronald Stoltz is an adorable story. Al is a T-rex who is a vegetarian and has a fondness for strawberries. Al is constantly being made fun of because he chooses to eat differently from the other T-rexes. One day, because of his dietary choices, Al becomes a hero.
I chose to read “Al: The Story of a Vegetarian T-Rex” with my 4 year-old because she is also a picky eater. In fact she just tried her first strawberry the day before I read this story to her. She really liked this story. Her favorite illustration and part of the book was when Al was running away from the storm with a strawberry on his head. I thought Stoltz did a good job with this story. He shows children that they do not have to be like everyone else and that it is okay to be different. He also touches on what a vegetarian is. The illustrations in the book are cute and some are really funny. I loved the football team of T-rexes with short arms. The wording in the story is not too difficult, some kids may be able to read the story by themselves.
Overall “Al: The Story of a Vegetarian T-Rex” is a good book! I can see this book as being a starter book for teaching children and adults on how to eat healthier. I would like to see this book in school libraries. I would love to read more of Stoltz’s work in the future. *I reviewed this book for Reader's Favorite
Always happy to see kids' books depicting vegetarianism in a positive way. Though I must point out that the other T-Rex kids in the story LITERALLY cannot eat a salad to save their lives. So obviously this takes place in America.
I wanted to really love this, but unfortunately this cute story fell flat. The illustrations were confusing for little ones and the flow of the short storyline didn't go anywhere.
