Four lighthouses remain in Pennsylvania, and Lake Erie is home to three. In 1818, Old Presque Isle Light became the first United States lighthouse built on the lake's shore. But a need for even more navigational assistance gave birth to the North Pierhead Lighthouse forty years later. The Presque Isle Light Station first shined on Lake Erie in July 1873. Thanks to the guidance from these landmarks, Erie's port is one of the busiest in the Great Lakes. Author Eugene Ware offers an edifying history of Erie Harbor lights.
As a lifelong Erie resident, I learned so much about Presque Isle and the history of its lighthouses to enrich my local history knowledge. Eugene Ware is such an expert, and while some of the information was almost textbook-like, the flow to the book was great and the information was written very well. I loved the information about the realities of being a lighthouse keeper and how wild Presque Isle has been up until recent times. I just took my kids to the beach today and was able to give them some fun facts that they even enjoyed and brought some perspective to the local treasure that we are able to so effortlessly enjoy today.
There are three lighthouses or aids to navigation that have been in Pennsylvania alear the city of Erie. This touches on each of the three lighthouses, the Presque Isle peninsula as well as information on the houses, people and lights that are part of their story.
