Christy Miller #11

Sweet Dreams

Rate this book
Christy's senior year is going great! Especially the time she spends with Todd. It's painful, though, to see how her best friend Katie is struggling in her relationship with Michael.

A weekend at Uncle Bob and Aunt Marti's in Newport Beach is supposed to help cheer Katie up. Doug even comes along for a day at Disneyland with Christy, Todd, and Katie. His Doug-hugs help, but only a little.

Christy appreciates Doug's kindness more than ever, but how is the future going to shape up for all of them after she and Katie graduate? Christy discovers the answers when she is willing to listen, not only to her friends but also to her heart where she can hear God gently prompting her to "let go".

What does that mean? How can letting go of all she's been praying for lead her to a place of sweet dreams in the future that has now suddenly opened before her?

Book 11 of the Christy Miller series.

Alright. I do NOT read these books just to write scathing reviews of them. Actually, the truth is that I've gotten attached to Christy Miller. And after 11 books, how could I not? She's so sweet, and tries to be such a good person and INSISTS on dating Todd, a guy who is obsessed with God.

Is being obsessed with God a bad thing? This book is trying to say that Todd is the perfect Christian man and that Christy is blessed to have him. He does the following:
Spends dates with her family members instead of her.
Lectures her about the Bible.
Lectures her about God.
Shows up late for dates.
Shows up for dates with other people in tow (again, pointing to the "I'm afraid to be alone with you" feeling that I'm getting from him.)
Lectures her about how easy it is for men to fall into temptation and how she's different from the other girls because she's so modest, and not a tease.
Lectures her about how females making the first move is slutty. Of course, he doesn't use the word 'slutty,' but that's what he means. As a result, Christy's so afraid of offending him that she won't even hold his hand unless he grabs it.

What a prince, huh?

There's a super-romantic scene at the end where Todd and Christy are on the beach, and Todd is saying all these romantic things to Christy and she has this overwhelming urge to tell him that she loves him. But she doesn't. Why? Is she afraid that he won't say it back? Is she afraid that he doesn't really love her. NO. She's afraid it will be too slutty and forward and not letting him be the one in control. DISGUSTING, the way he has her trained in this book to think affection and touching are dirty and wrong, especially when a female does it.

This book is more about Katie and Michael. Katie is Christy's best friend and she's been dating Michael for six months. She's been doing what my friends call "flirt to convert," hoping that by becoming Girlfriend, she could turn him Christian.

Of course, Michael is Christian. He believes in God, and that Jesus is the son of God. He thinks Christianity is "the right path." But he's not born-again. And in this book, if you're not born-again, you're going to hell.

Here's an excerpt:

"God wants me to break up with Michael," Katie blurted out. .... And I've been disobeying God...I've known it for a couple of weeks now. All along I've been praying that Michael would surrender to the Lord. I thought that's why God brought him into my life, for me to show him how to become a Christian. And I've tried. Believe me! The six and a half months we've been together I've talked to him, given him books to read, taken him to Bible studies, introduced him to other Christians. And you know how I gave him that Bible for Christmas? ... He just won't believe. it's not that he can't believe in Christianity is the right way or that he doesn't believe in God, because he does. It's that he won't surrender his life to Christ. ... I told God that if He wanted me to break up with Michael, I would. And then God told me to break up with him. Don't ask me how I know. Michael wanted to know how God talks to me. I can't explain it. It's just that deep inside my heart I know what the Holy Spirit is telling me."

So Katie breaks up with Michael. And the book is mainly about her trying to heal her broken heart and Christy learning how to deal with a friend who's in extreme pain because she's left the man she loves. And I mean, Katie seriously loves Michael. It's really sad.

On the Fred front: Fred is the yearbook creeper who's been stalking Christy. This is his second book following her around, not taking 'no' for an answer, disregarding the fact that she has a boyfriend, and repeatedly asking her to prom. In this book he finds out what church she attends and starts going there. Then he "surrenders his life to Jesus." I have no idea if he really has an interest in Christianity or if she's just hoping Christy will agree to a date. At the end,

Regarding prom. Like most teenage girls, Christy would like to attend prom. But when she talks to Todd about it, this is what he says:

"It's a poor imitation of the real thing."
"What?" Christy asked, not following him.
"it's like pretending you're at the wedding feast. It's a poor imitation of the real thing. ... You see, I think that what every human soul longs for, whether that person knows it or not, is to be at the marriage feast of the Lamb," Todd explained.
"You lost me," Christy said.
"Christy, you know when this world comes to an end and we all stand before God, He's going to bring all those who He's prepared to be the bride of Christ - the church - into the marriage feast, where the believers and Christ will be united forever. It's going to be the biggest, wildest party ever. ... So deep within the heart of every person is the desire to be invited, to be dressed like royalty and treated the same, and to be included in the celebration. Something like a prom is a hollow imitation of the real thing you and I will experience one day."

Wow. Way to piss all over Christy's innocent little desire to go to prom, Todd. You putz. To Christy's credit, she gives him a little resistance. And she idly wonders if the rest of her life is going to be this way - Todd always thinking of God and not her, Todd always worrying about God's feelings more than hers. But she pushes it from her mind.

Wanting to go to prom is not a sin. Wanting to see your boyfriend in a tuxedo and dance with him and dress up and feel fancy for one night IS NOT WRONG. This is my main problem with Todd: Christy tells him how she feels about something or about her desire to do something (go to prom, kiss him, hold hands with him, go on a date where it's just the two of them), and he tells her why her desires are wrong and sinful. SHE ALWAYS ENDS UP FOLDING. He wins every time. And this is because he's the man, he guides the relationship, and it's his job to teach women what God really wants.

Also, does anyone else think it's strange that Todd calls God "Papa?" o.O I know he grew up with a father who was barely around, but this seems like an extreme bit of transference to me.

(2011) Wow wow wow!!!

(2019, second reread) Series Book #11 reread prepping for the newest one 'Becoming Us' releasing next month.

(2023, third reread) Biggest cliffhanger of the high school years. Even as my third reread I feel all the emotions as if these fictional characters are real life forever friends who walk among us.

I was so proud of Christy after this book. I don't know if I could have trusted God like she did. I think it's a great book for teenage girls to read. Very encouraging.

Sweet Dreams was great! It had some happy moments, along with some sad ones. It seemed like Christy and Todd were on their way to forever, but then things took a turn when Christy tells him he shouldn't let her be the reason he doesn't go on his dream mission trip. So he ends up going and we're left wondering if he will ever come back. Also, we finally find out who paid off the bracelet for Christy (Doug!).

This is the third time I've read this series beginning to end, and it took me just about an hour and a half to read this book!! This one is my favourite, the most emotional, sweet and completely unexpected book of the series, in my opinion. I still tear up when I get to the last few chapters.... it's just so good.

How will it end?

This book was wonderful! Katie decides to break up with Michael, which I was SOOOO HAAPPYY about!!! She feels she is in love with him, and always will be, so she's struggling a bit. Christy is learning how to help her in this situation.

Chapter 9, titled "Sweet Dreams," was my favorite chapter in the book. Christy gets sick, and her mom cares for her. Her mom sets up a bath, brings drinks to her, cleans her room, washes her sheets, makes her bed, and makes sure Christy's room is smelling fresh. I thought it was SO SWEET. I loved seeing their mother-daughter relationship. Todd showed up, too! Here is one of my favorite scenes from the chapter:

"....Besides," [Todd's] voice turned serious, "what I feel for Christy is above and beyond the call of friendship."

I loved that part!

Christy was SO BRAVE. She decides to tell Todd to go on his mission trip, knowing very well he may never come back. This time, Todd's the one who doesn't know what to do, and Christy's the one giving him advice. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

You may be wondering why I rated this book only three stars.

Just... read this piece of the last page.

"I appreciate you being here for me, especially tonight. You're a very special friend."

"A very special friend," Doug muttered. "Just friends."

"What?" Christy asked, not sure she had heard what he said.

Doug turned off the engine. "Nothing," he said.

ARG ARG ARGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe Doug, that is so unlike him. Now, what will happen when Todd comes back?? He will be so mad at Doug. I really, really hope Christy doesn't give up on Todd, and start dating Doug.

Sweet Dreams by Robin Jones Gunn is the eleventh book in the Christy Miller series.

Okay, I was anticipating this. This book is so sweet and fuzzy and heartwarming, but also so sad. But it makes you sad in a happy way. You're thinking Why does this have to happen. Why are you doing this to me Robin Jones Gunn but at the same time it's like OH MY GOSH THE SHIP HAS SAILED *queue fangirly screaming*

Like nearly every Christy Miller book, I loved the message in this one. To be a good friend it's sometimes best to hang on, and sometimes it's best to just let go.

I love Todd and Christy, but one thing I would love to see is some faults in Todd. He's made some mistakes, of course, but he is pretty much the perfect boyfriend. Nobody can be that perfect, not even Todd Spencer. (Although in the later books, like in The College Years series he does seem a little more real.)

What really got to me was this part right here: That quote ALWAYS gets to me. It makes MY heart soar but at the same time I just want to throw myself on my bed and cry because wHY TODD NEVER DID ANYTHING TO HURT ANYBODY. on purpose.

Um. Sorry this wasn't such a collected, calm review but this book doesn't deserve a calm review IT DESERVES A FANGIRLY REVIEW WITH LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS. :D

5 stars out of 5.

Some reread thoughts as an adult (2024):

I remember reading this for the first time when I was 13 and thinking it was the most romantic book I had ever read. I also remember crying buckets at the end and having to get out my journal to write about how heartbroken I was. “You gave nobility a face, Christy!”

Number of pages: 145

Genre: Contemporary YA

Series: Christy Miller #11 (They need to be read in order!) Overall series rating: 3.5/5 stars

Age recommendation: minimum 13, but I think 14/15+ is better.

Summary: Christy’s relationship with Todd is going well, but she’s worried about Katie and her relationship with Michael. Katie is really struggling and Christy wants to help, but she doesn’t know what to do or say without pushing her friend away. She hopes a weekend at her aunt and uncle’s at Newport Beach can help cheer Katie up.

My thoughts: It’s way too lovey-dovey. I don’t think a steady diet of romance novels is healthy for anyone, particularly teenage girls. They have enough feeding their boy craze already, if you ask me. At least the messages about being careful, setting (and sticking to) boundaries, and saving yourself for your future husband are very clear in these books as well, but sometimes morals go in one ear and out the other while the cute surfer dudes stay… 😊
I like how much Christy has grown up in this book, and I like how Todd is continuing to be more open about his feelings and plans with Christy.
I really don’t like the ending to this book
When Todd compared the prom to a “cheap imitation of the marriage supper of the lamb,” (or something to that effect), I wanted to laugh so bad. I agree that nothing on earth will even begin to compare to heaven. However, that does not mean that we should sit around thinking “I’m never going to do anything because heaven will be so much greater” (Okay, I’m exaggerating a bit on the other side of things). My point is, even for Todd, it seems like he was over spiritualizing things. I mean, he went to his own prom, and now that Christy wants to go to hers it’s suddenly not very Christian. I’m not saying that they have to, or even should necessarily go to prom, but it seems to me that Todd had a bit of a double standard. (Or else he was trying to make himself appear to be a better/more spiritual Christian which I don’t appreciate).
Besides those few things that I wasn’t a fan of, I actually mostly enjoyed the book; I’m just better at writing what I didn’t like than what I did😉.

My personal rating: 3/5 stars.

This book definitely felt more "real" than the other books, probably because Christy makes such a grownup decision in this story (she's terrible at making decisions, by the way). Christy spends a fair amount of time in this book trying to cheer Katie up after she breaks up with Michael. Katie has come to realize that what Christy had been previously about not dating a non-Christian was a bigger deal than Katie realized. To try to cheer Katie up, Christy, Todd, and Doug take her to Disneyland (I've never been to Disneyland, so the descriptions of the park got my attention for a while). Aside from Katie's breakup, Christy also wants to go to prom with Todd (he, of course, does not want to go). Todd must also decide on going on a missions trip like he's always wanted or choosing to stay in California while Christy must decide whether she can let Todd go.

This book definitely had a plot twist I wasn't expecting; there wasn't exactly the typical "happily-ever-after" ending the previous books had. This one was a bittersweet type of ending.

This series has my literal heart. This is the first series that went on my bookshelf and will remain on my favorite shelf. I re-read it at least once a year and every time it's a page turner, hard to put down, type of book. It creates such mazing imagery that as I read I loose focus of words on a page, but the image in my mind. I LOVE this series and recommend this to teens, or even YA.
