This book is truly a great resource when you think about starting out as a travel writer. You will not learn how to write better. You will get to see the business part of being a travel writer. Tim covers well the transition between the print world and the new media world (2.0). He shows you what it takes to be successful in this field, how to start out and gives you a hint whether you are the right person for this. If you think about becoming a travel writer, read this book. If you just look for ideas how to write better from your travels and you don't care about making money or business, pick other book instead.

This is not a book for the timid. I imagine at least half of it's readers will quickly decide travel writing isn't for them and isn't what they expected. Author Tim Leffel holds no punches when he breaks down the road blocks and obstacles many freelance writers will encounter on their(hopeful)way to success...and that doesn't include help with things such as grammar or writer's block. He does offer many resources and examples to help the struggling travel writer get their foot in the door but it also emphasis' the work it requires. It's not all umbrella drinks and down comforters. But it is a great outline for the reality that is free lance.

Don't expect a classical guide about how to write, but rather a good guidance about how to turn into a successful travel writer. It is not enough to travel a lot for becoming a travel writer, but you never need to stop writing if you want to be considered a top notch writer. Plus, you need to invest in your training and in a good looking site. Never stop learning and use the right resources and you will get to the top one day.

I read Tim Leffel’s Travel Writing 2.0 (Third Edition) pretty much in one sitting. Despite being a freelance writer for thirty years, I confess I’d never read a book about travel writing, and I was astonished how much this book taught me. Several aspects stood out. One was the comprehensive coverage of the many different ways to make money as a travel writer, from traditional freelance work for magazines to blogs and corporate trade journals. Another was the importance of specializing, especially in today’s overcrowded writing field. A third (well, and fourth) was how essential it is to invest in yourself and present yourself as a professional, whether that’s having attractive business cards or creating a polished website. Unlike other writing books, Leffel doesn’t hold back on providing specific details that are most helpful to writers, no matter if they are beginners or seasoned veterans. Plenty of anecdotes and a distinctive voice make this book a highly worthwhile investment for almost any freelancer.

I was not especially happy with this book, possibly because I have recently read other books of a similar nature.

My problem with the book is that it did not offer anything new. What I like about the book, is Tim Leffel's insistence on being practical, and ensuring that you have a few alternate sources of income.
This is indeed sage advice

There is no magic bullet, sadly. However, I was hoping for some more insight than what I got. Something on what makes a good travel piece; the various forms of travel writing; the joys and tribulations.

For me, while there is some useful stuff in the book, it is not enough

In this book, Tim covers travel writing in a digital age, the 104 faces of a travel writer, traditional and digital opportunities for travel writers, the craft of travel writing, self-promotion, social media (yes, the two are different), and more - and brings the collective wisdom of travel writers to bring you their perspectives on these topics, as well (including yours truly). It's well worth reading, and digesting, and re-reading. There is much here to savor, learn from, and use to improve your travel writing - and grow your business. Highly recommended.

A good introduction to new media and travel writing with some excellent tips inside. Well worth a read for anyone wanting a starting point. If you are already in online it probably won't be new to you.

This is possibly the only guide that lays out what a difficult, thankless job travel writing is. No promises of riches, no promises of guaranteed success, and absolutely no promises of free vacations like certain other travel writing guides!

Tim is a seasoned veteran of travel writing and having written books and run websites for years, he's well qualified to give advice. And the advice is excellent, easy to follow and with heaps of real-world examples, both from Tim's own website portfolio and some of his peers.

I took direct action as a result of this book and it has had a direct impact on my success as a travel publisher in the digital age. This version is updated with the latest tactics as things move so fast, but the strategy remains the same.

A must for any aspiring travel writer who wants to know what it really takes to make it.
