Sometimes the truth hurts … When journalist Tess Johnson takes a job at Helix pharmaceuticals, she has a very specific motive. Tess has reason to believe the company are knowingly producing a potentially harmful drug and, if her suspicions are confirmed, she will stop at nothing to make sure the truth comes out.
Jim Knight is the president of research and development at Helix and is a force to be reckoned with. After a disastrous office affair he’s determined that nothing else will distract him from his vision for the company. Failure is simply not an option.
As Tess and Jim start working together, both have their reasons for wanting to ignore the sexual chemistry that fires between them. But chemistry, like most things in the world of science, isn’t always easy to control.
I was born in Wallingford, England and have spent most of my life living in a village outside Windsor. A former pharmacist, former pharmaceutical industry employee I’m now a self-employed medical writer who also loves to write romance. Some days a racing heart is a medical condition, others it’s the reaction to a hunky hero…
I’ve two teenage boys and a husband who asks every Valentine’s Day whether he has to bother buying a card again this year (yes, he does) so the romance in my life is all in my head. Then again, my husband’s unstinting support of my career change goes to prove that love isn't always about hearts and flowers - and heroes can come in many disguises
This was a really cute book. A nice romantic story that left a sweet feeling after I had finished.
Tessa's mother dies from a heart attack after taking a new cancer drug. She hears of some other people suffering heart complications following the same treatment and decides to use her journalism talents to investigate. With the encouragement of her brother she successfully gains a job at the pharmaceutical company as the communications manager, working closely with the handsome president of research and development Jim Knight. Jim has only been back to the company for a little while, having left two years prior when he found his girlfriend in a compromising position with his then boss. Now he is back and wanting to make an impact on the company, without having to worry about the complications of an office relationship. And then he meets his new communications manager... Cue lots of cute scenes, sparks flying and exes seething, all while Tessa is trying to discover if Jim is ultimately responsible for the death of her mother.
No doubt about it, this was a cute book. However it lacked a lot of substance for me. I like my romances with a lot more passion and tension. It was completely and totally predictable. That's not a bad thing with a romance a lot of the time, however it was a little TOO predictable. It just lacked a bit of excitement and a bit more drama. And I found it to be slightly lacking in the sexy department.
I really didn't like Tessa. I found that considering that she was an investigative journalist, some of the things that she did and the decisions that she made were a bit (or a lot) silly. And I understand that a lot of women (myself included) are ashamed and paranoid about certain aspects of their body. I'm fairly sure that all of us women are. But there is a scene when they first get together and she assumes he is disgusted by her body, and he has to remind her again and again of how beautiful she was... It killed the sexy for me. I found myself rolling my eyes and willing them just to get on with it.
The blossoming romance was lacking something for me too... Maybe its because Jim seemed like such a strong and powerful character, sleeps with her and becomes a total needy whiny puppy dog. I had visions of him nipping at her heels.
It dragged on a bit in parts, and the ending was predictable and average. But it wasn't a bad read. Freeman has a nice style of writing, it was easy to read and very sweet. I did enjoy it, just not enough for me to bump up the star rating.
Overall a solid 3 stars.
Would I recommend it?
Yes, but only for cute romance fans who don't mind the lack of excitement, and are content with a lot of cute, corny and sweet!
Another win for Kathryn Freeman and Choc Lit! 'Search for the Truth' was a sizzling storm of hidden secrets and desire.
In 'Search for the Truth' Kathryn Freeman takes us into the inner workings of a business you probably wouldn't think of on a daily basis. The pharmaceutical business, and the companies that develop, test and distribute the thousands of drugs in use around the world. Immediately I was hooked! What an intriguing premise, and such an original setting! From the get-go, I was on tenterhooks. Tess is a young woman who has lost her mother to cancer, but only hours after she first takes a new treatment drug. Her mission to give closure to her family made me connect to her straight away. Her strong family bonds and her desperation to protect others from losing their own family members made her a really likeable character, but also made me worry for her. It was hard to see how much pressure she was under, particularly from her brother, even whilst knowing he just wanted the best for her. I loved how the story brought together Tess and her boss Jim. The fireworks between them were stunning, and I loved seeing the back-and-forth banter they shared, even whilst knowing that Tess is on a slippery slope to losing all she has grown to care for as she continues on her mission to seek justice against the company she is now working for.
I loved seeing Jim's reaction to Tess, and the way he softened even whilst remaining strong and determined. His plans to reform the company and to ensure that patients are given the best treatment possible was what made the secrets Tess hid so much more heartbreaking to me as a reader. I loved seeing the conflict that Tess had, and seeing how her feelings began to change as her relationship with Jim became more and more serious.
This is a beautiful story where there is conflict between the power of love and the power of truth, and Kathryn Freeman did it to perfection!

"Search For The Truth" by Kathryn Freeman
What I liked about this novel.....
If you love romances along with a suspense then you will have to pick up the right well written story called "Search For The Truth." This author gives the reader a good read that will keep your attention all the way till the very end with all of its secrets and tension dealing with this pharmaceutical business company. For the heroine in this story it was quite a story for her in trying to find out what really happened to her mom after dying from a heart attack only hours after her first treatment with this drug from this company. Then there was Tess's boss Jim where it seemed to be something going on between the two..some fireworks? Anyway, I don't want to tell too much but what you to pick up this read and see for yourself how well this author will bring it all out so well to the reader. It will be a interesting read as Tess will seek to get the justice needed against Helix pharmaceutical company. I loved how the story brings out the conflict that Tess was dealing with all of the suspense in whether Jim knew about the situation of just what was going on at his company that had caused a death. In the end how will will this story play out....the power of love ...and or the truth?
I received this Kindle read from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! This was a brilliant book! Full of love, doubt, suspicion and quite a lot of humour!
The basic premise is journalist Tess gets a job with Helix Pharmaceuticals to try and found out if their product for cancer caused her mother's heart attack. There she meets Jim, the new, dynamic R&D President and fireworks happen. The balance between her desire to find the truth and her fear that Jim knew about the risk and took it anyway runs like a river through the book.
I loved Tess and Jim was praying that he knew nothing about the drug complications. Kathryn is a very clever writer. I was cheering and depressed alternatively all the way through! The suspense and tension was kept up all the way through and I was quite exhausted by the time I reached the end. No spoilers so I won't even say if I was happy with the end or not!
Loved it - in fact I have yet to find a Choc Lit book I don't love!
Great Book! This is a great book by Kathryn Freeman. This is the first book I have read by this author and really enjoyed it. Tess Johnson is a journalist, her boss sends her undercover at Helix pharmaceuticals. Tess takes a job at Helix pharmaceuticals to see if there is truth to the rumors of them producing a potentially harmful drug. Jim Knight is the president of research and development at Helix. After a disastrous office affair Jim is determined that nothing will ever distract him from his vision for the company. The more time Jim and Tess spend together the stronger attraction they feel for each other. If you are looking for a great romance with suspense then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
When i started this book, i felt maybe it was going to be a bit boring and wasnt for me but boy was i wrong. By the end i couldnt read it quick enough and was dissapointed that the journey had finished. In Search for the Truth, Tess Johnson's mum has died from a heart attack after taking a new drug called Zaplex. Heartbroken Tess also hears about some others who have had the same untimely deaths. Seeing as Tess is a Journalist, her boss sends her to Helix pharmaceuticals undercover working as a communications manager. Wanting to find out the truth if they had really produced a potentially harmful drug. There Tess meets George Clooney lookalike and P&D of the company, Jim Knight. As Tess begins to work closely with Jim she finds out he has only been back working for the company for a little while, having left 2 years prior when he found his girlfriend having sex in the office with his then boss. Jim is now back and works full steam ahead wanting to make the company as it should be with no stones left unturned. And seems to be an honest, genuine guy. There is a spark between Jim and Tess, but Tess has a job to do and cant let anything get in her way. She knows if she was to start anything with Jim, it would be based on a lie as she cant be honest about why she is there working. I was hooked so much as i wanted to see the outcome and i was rooting for Jim and hoping he knew nothing about the Zaplex drug complication. I loved seeing the relationship develop with Jim and Tess, they were a suited couple and seemed to work well together. I really found this enjoyable hearing about the world of Pharmaceuticals and even learnt a little. Kathryn Freeman, certainly did her research and even took her own knowledge on the subject. It was refreshing to read about something different that i hadnt read before. A really great gripping read.
In all honesty I didn't think I would enjoy Search for the Truth by Kathryn Freeman, simply because it sounded like so many I have read before, but I put my hands up and joyfully admit I was wrong, as I truly loved it.
Tess’s mom loses her life to a heart attack, but they discover she also unknowingly had cancer. Sounds suspicious and strange doesn't it? Tess finds out at the funeral from a patient’s daughter that was on the same ward as Tess’s mom that her mom also died from a heart attack and her mom also had cancer. Say what?!
Did the cancer drug they were both using cause their deaths? Tess is on a quest to find out the answer to that very question.
Fast forward 18 months and with the valued support of her family she infiltrates Helix, the pharmaceutical company that produced the drug trial and she makes it her mission to find out the truth. What they don't know is that she is also a journalist and when the truth comes out she intends to bring them down.
In the process of reaching her goal she didn't expect to encounter Jim Knight, the gorgeous research and develop manager whom she has to work very close with. He's already had a relationship with a colleague in the past and got horribly hurt but sparks fly between them and the banter is sweet and funny.
Will she uncover the truth? You’re going to have read it yourself .
Love, loyalty, truth, justice, suspense, romance and suspicions it's all here in this book one I highly recommend it. 4.5 Stars
Tess is mourning the loss of her mum .. not only did she have breast cancer but she died unexpectedly from a heart attack shortly after starting a new treatment. Tess & her brother Mark think it is too much of a coincidence so they make it their mission to uncover the truth behind the drug.
Tess, former journalist gets herself the postilion of communications officer at Helix pharmaceuticals with the intention of uncovering the truth about the safety record details.
However she hadn’t anticipated the company president Jim would be such an attraction. He is a George Clooney lookalike & oozes charisma. Blunt, arrogant, powerful, & sexy as hell is it any wonder Tess begins to fall for his charm. Jim’s previous relationship left him reeling with pain after being deceived by a work colleague so he was determined not to make the same error of judgement but could he resist the tall, willowy red-head.
What should be a simple working environment, with a bit of office flirting turns rapidly into a search for the truth that involves lies, tears & drama.
I really enjoyed this book, Tess is strong but has an endearing side, Jim is so hot I think I fell in love with him a teensy bit .. fast-moving chemistry flies from the pages & keeps you hooked until the end.
Thanks to the author & Brook Cottage Books for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest review.
Search for the Truth is an extremely enjoyable read. I was instantly drawn to the character of Tess who is desperately searching for the truth around her mother's death. Suspicious that there is a link between her mother's heart attack and a new trial drug developed by a big drugs company, Helix Tess goes undercover to investigate. Landing herself a job at the company she begins investigating in earnest. However, her good intentions are hindered by the extremely gorgeous president of research Jim Knight. Kathryn Freeman has developed an alpha male with feelings and a heart that has been broken. His resolve not to get involved with a member of staff again is weakened by the beautiful Tess.
This is an exciting read and as Tess begins to unravel more information about Helix and its practices can she do the right thing or will her heart rule her head? Kathryn Freeman's knowledge of the pharmaceutical world is evident throughout this book and the information about this world is delivered in an interesting way that is not overpowering. There is more than one type of chemistry going on in the lab though. The sexual chemistry and passion between Tess and Jim sparks off the page and sweeps the reader along with the intrigue and suspense. A great read!!!
Tessa is a journalist on a mission. Her mother had a heart attack shortly after starting a new cancer drug Zaplex. After another woman (a gatecrasher at her mother's funeral) claims her mother died the same way, along with many others, Tessa decides to take a job with Helix and investigate. Will she find the answers she is looking for? Is Helix corrupt? Will she be found out?
Jim hates the way Helix was run under his predecessor. Now that he is President of R&D things are going to change! He is going to make the department more effective an clean up the company's image at the same time. Why is he so drawn to the exreporter Head of Communications? How could a reporter ever do this job?
***This book is suitable for adult readers who enjoy a little romantic comedy in their chic lit with a happily ever after :)
Reader beware - you WILL fall for Jim! If Tessa wasn't going to be with him, you can sign me up! This was a great read over the weekend. I think I would do the same thing if I were in Tessa's shoes - my mom dies unexpectedly after beginning a new medicine so I take it upon myself to find out if her death was the result of the drug. I could so relate to Tessa and the need to know aspect of her personality.
I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second Kathryn Freeman book I've read and she really knows how to make the chemistry work between the two main characters. I very much enjoyed this story and the author's knowledge of the industry is obvious which makes for a very believable and plausible read. Search for the Truth is romantic and touching with an uber sexy hero and a sensitive yet strong heroine.
I believe that many of us who depend on prescription drugs for ourselves or our loved ones have a love/hate relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. The seemingly excessive cost for medicine often leaves those most in need of the drug unable to afford something that may save their lives. On the other hand, the cost for research and development, plus the cost to hire the best scientists and doctors to find those cures and treatments is also high. So when it appears that a drug or the side effects of that medicine harms or takes the life of a loved one, the enemy is the drug company that manufactured that drug. An industry that not many outside of it’s walls understand becomes an easy scapegoat when medicine goes wrong.
While the above is my personal opinion – it also ties in to this story on so many levels. Tessa’s mother was fighting cancer, when shortly after receiving a new treatment drug she died from a heart attack, Tessa and her family were devastated. When a stranger approached her during her mother’s memorial service stating that her family member had also died of a heart attack shortly after taking the same drug, Tessa’s journalistic radar went off the charts.
It was decided between Tessa and her newspaper boss that she would go undercover at the company who manufactured the drug that Tessa believes killed her mother. Tessa wants the truth and to make the company that took her mother from her to pay for their disregard for human life in lieu of profits. She entered into the job convinced that the company was at fault, all she needed now was solid proof that she intended to uncover once she had access to people and files.
Jim has returned to Helix as it’s president of research and development. After being betrayed in the worst way by the woman he loved and who also worked for Helix, Jim had immediately left the company. Now, two years later he is back and in a position to make changes that not only help the company but will benefit the patients who need their product. Heads will roll, he will not be the most popular man in the company, but change will happen – on that front he is determined.
Tessa feels that the heavens are on her side as she is in a position to work closely with the man who had ties directly to the drug she is researching. What she didn’t count on was finding out that the changes he wanted would make the medicines developed by Helix much safer and better presented to the doctors who would ultimately prescribe them. She hadn’t considered the rules and regulations within the industry, the safeguards nor the long line of testing and research involved before drugs were made available to the public. She also hadn’t counted on becoming attracted to her co-worker, but her path was set no matter what her emotions were.
Search for the Truth is an intricate novel that exposes the industry to us, brings out information that the average person on the street doesn’t have access to. That thread of truth flows through the story, highlighting information and situations that outsiders would rarely know about. The fact that Ms Freeman has worked in this industry comes through loud and clear – and helps to make the faceless industry more approachable even more human.
I enjoyed Search for the Truth on many levels, it is a story that is exposed layer by layer as the characters become more involved and more attracted to each other. Tessa and Jim were complex people. Each had their reasons for fighting the attraction they felt, but eventually emotion wins over logic. Tessa’s internal battle with the need to know what happened to her mother against knowing what the discovery of her ultimate betrayal will mean to Jim is a painful joy to read. It is an intense story that I read in one sitting as the emotions and the tension became great enough that I simply had to know what the end would be without a break.
I would recommend this novel for any reader who enjoys a good love story, wants a richly detailed story that draws you in and won’t let you go until the final sentence.
*I received an e-ARC of Search for the Truth from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I got sucked into this story, Tess's determination to find proof of Helix's wrong doings made it easy to become invested in the story. Tess's relationship with Jim adds greater depth to the story and provided conflict that forced you to think about different possible outcomes. Would definitely check out other works by this author.
Tess’s heart had been thumping loudly from the moment she’d started this topic of conversation. At Jim’s quiet but deadly question, it threatened to explode. Looking hastily away from his piercing gaze, she clasped her hands together, as if in prayer, though she doubted divine intervention was going to save her. The evening had always been destined to arrive at this point, no matter how hard she’d tried to engineer a less confrontational approach. Jim was simply too smart to hoodwink.
Searching for the Truth in some instances can be very dangerous, but most always—it is hardly ever what you prepare yourself for…it is always a far stretch from your imagination, whether positive or negative. Freeman takes her readers into the pharmaceutical company and all of the slander and hatred that is bred from fear of the unknown. At first, what seems like a cut and dry case for Tess, becomes much more complicated and hard to walk away from. She quickly learns that not everything can always be black or white—in this case, right or wrong.
Tessa just lost her mother from a heart attack. After battling cancer for a while, the death had completely blindsided her family. At the funeral home, a woman stops in to pay her respects and informs Tessa of a possible drug affiliation that led to her mother’s untimely death as well—heart attack being the cause of both. For Tess, journalism is in her blood, these reports of a breast cancer drug being administered days or merely weeks before fatal heart attacks, have her blood boiling. She decides to take a job in the pharmaceutical company that created and researched the drug—her mission to find out the truth seems easy, but quickly becomes a battle of morality after meeting the research and development manager, Jim. He is smart, handsome and has a fierce loyalty that Tess finds impossibly hard to escape from. When he lands his sights on her, his new communications manager, there is nothing that will stop him from getting what he wants—except maybe, learning the real reason behind her sudden interest in wanting to join the company which is to expose him and his employees for wrong-doing and hiding safety issues from the public.
Freeman has a superb story-line with fantastic character development and original content. The information is very credible and sheds light on pharmaceutical companies, some of the nitty-gritty things that most people don’t know about when they think of these companies. This book does appear to need a bit more editing because there are definite struggles throughout the read, but by no means is it uninteresting or lacking in creativity. If you are a reader of romance, you may want to pick this up.
A free copy was exchanged for an honest review of this fictional piece.
Although it drags a bit at the end, pretty entertaining read and fun to see the author make use of her background working in medical communications within the pharmaceutical industry, as it makes for an unusual (and for some of us familiar) setting. While the “pharma is evil” narrative is a bit old for us who work in the industry, there are several valid points being made with regards to conduct, drug safety etc., although many times rather simplified and not always reflecting current reality, e.g. as the practice of giving freebies to doctors or paying for expensive trips is long gone. On another note, ALL clinical trial data from ALL companies are always publicly listed on ClinicalTrials.gov, accessible to everyone, and if the company is listed on the stock exchange, a press release outlining the major findings from each trial will be mandatory regardless of outcome prior to publication, which somewhat diminishes the need for snooping.
Tessa is an investigative journalist who has infiltrated the big pharmaceutical company, Helix. Helix developed drug that was given to Tessa’s mum as part of her cancer treatment but Tessa believes that the drug caused her mother’s heart attack and that this company is ultimately responsible for her mum’s death.
Jim Knight is head of Helix and after a disastrous affair with a work colleague he is determined to focus on the company. However, he finds himself increasingly attracted to the new member of staff Tessa! The attraction is mutual but Tessa is determined to focus on discovering the truth about the company.
This is the first novel I’ve read by Kathryn Freeman and it was a really enjoyable read. It was refreshingly different to other books in this genre in that it was a romance but with a really serious issue at it’s centre.
I was hooked from the very start of this novel wanting to know whether Tessa would discover answers at Helix before they discovered that she was working undercover, or if she did discover more about the drug whether it would turn out to be part of a big cover up. This novel was a bit close to home for me at times but it meant that I was willing Tessa on all the more to find out the truth so that she and her family could have closure.
The dynamic between Tessa and Jim was great too. They were obviously very attracted to each other but at the same time Tessa was not been honest about who she really is, and Jim was trying to reform Helix to really do good for cancer patients. The romance seemed doomed to fail at times because of all the secrets and potential for conflict. I was hoping all the way through the book that Jim would turn out to be a genuine guy, it made the romance storyline all the more unpredictable, and therefore better, that we just don’t know for a while what he knows.
I really enjoyed this novel, it had a great mix of things going on and it was a real page turner for me. I’ll be looking out for more of Kathryn Freeman’s novels in the future!
I received a copy of this book via Brook Cottage Books as part of the blog tour in exchange for an honest review.
I think I've fallen for Jim Knight. But this book's about more than just Jim and his heart-stopping looks - it's an excellent story set within the pharmaceuticals industry that the author's so familiar with, a tale of corporate corruption and struggling to change the way things are done that's both very different and keeps you turning the pages. It's also very much about lies and deception and their consequences, and about the pain of betrayal. But it's also a sizzling love story, with ex-journalist Tessa and R+D president Jim at its core - both characters we grow to love and watch with horror as the inevitable uncovering of secrets comes closer and closer and threatens everything we've watched develop.
I have to return to Jim, because he's quite mesmerising. His smouldering good looks are perfectly described, and when he smiles - and in time, he even laughs - you can feel the heat from the pages. But he's a lot more than just the George Clooney of the pharma industry - he's powerful but has integrity and honesty, he feels and hurts, he talks with passion about the things he believes in, and has a wonderful relationship with his mother. He also has a warehouse conversion penthouse flat, a cherished old Jaguar, and a body to die for... what more could you possibly ask for?
Tessa's an excellent character too - searching for the truth for the strongest of reasons, indulging her passion for the designer shoes she loves, so insecure about herself, but such a strong and likeable character. The dialogue throughout this book is sparkling - the early exchanges between Tessa and Jim are wonderful, and I just loved Jim's conversations with his mum - but the author also convinces when Jim takes a stance on some of the issues he finds within the company.
I really enjoyed this book, and found it quite impossible to put down - I was so involved in the story, and the romance at its heart was simply wonderful. I know Choc Lit's tag line is "where heroes are like chocolate - irresistible", but Jim Knight... he's most definitely one of the best!
Like so many books I've read lately, this one started so strongly and had me flipping the pages. But about halfway in, I just found myself bored. But, this is just me. In all, this is actually a great book that is well-written and has a great story. For those who like a romance with a simple backstory, this is a great read and I would highly recommend it! I just prefer a little more to my books. So, despite my lower rating, I would like to note that it in no way reflects the story or the book, only my personal tastes and how this book happens to fit with those.
This is a book about a young journalist, Tess, who has just lost her mother after she had taken part in a drug trial as a treatment for her cancer. Unfortunately, the drug her mother took seems to have been what took her life, not the cancer. Tess, being the investigative journalist that she is, infiltrates the pharmaceutical company that made the drug as a means to investigate them and try to expose the truth. In doing so, however, she finds herself unable to ignore her attraction to her boss and assumed enemy, Jim Knight. To make matters worse, the attraction is mutual. Only, for Jim, he tries to ignore his attraction because he is the boss and knows it would be a bad move to fall for an employee. What follows is a romance between two people both trying to deny their feelings, whilst one is working to unravel the secrets of the other.
Like I said, it is a good book and a well written story. I love a love story, so I can comment that the romance was well written and definitely developed and progressed at a reasonable rate. The book had its fair share of butterfly-inducing moments and Jim was definitely a sexy male lead.
If you like romances, I definitely suggest this book! But if you're looking for a gripping, romantic suspense, you might look elsewhere.
Tess’s mother died from heart failure while on a new treatment for cancer she had only had the medicine once before she died. Tess, her father, and brother Mark wasn’t taking it very well. Tess is a journalist and works for the Daily News. Tess was going undercover and would go back to her real job after she found out about the medicine Zuplex her mom and other people have taken and more in the future. A young woman named Avail had come to Tess’s mom’s wake her mom had passed away from a heart attack and had taken the same medicine Tess’s mom had and Tess’s mom and Avail’s mom So this was Mark’s and Tess’s best shot to finding anything out. So Tess’s new job was at the company that made the new medicine her mom and Avail’s mom had taken. It had taken Tess eighteen months to get this chance. The company she is starting to work for is Helix Pharmaceuticals. Jim was Tess’s boss he had just returned to the company a couple months ago after leaving for a couple years. But there is an attraction between Tess and Jim even though he has stated no romance between him and his co-workers. He had been there done that and it did not turn out good. I had some problems with this story but did finish it and for the most part liked it. First the story dragged in some parts had to keep interest and the story was very predictable and it takes the WOW from the story. That doesn’t make for a great read. I did like Tess;s determination to find the truth although her feelings were getting messed up in her investigation. I did like the ins and outs of this story. But it wasn’t a favorite read of mine. I received a ARC of this story for a honest review.
Tessa has lost someone really close to her and she is ready to find the killer cause she knows someone is to blame for the death and she is pointing that finger and the company who created the drug to help cancer patients and she will stop at nothing to prove they are in the wrong. Jim has had heart break and is ready to conquer the world of medicine and at no cost will anything or anyone stop him and he doesn't care who he piss off he plans to do things his way and make things right for a change. What he doesn't plan his the one person he never wanted to see to come back in his life like a bad habit and then Tess drops into his life will he be able to to handle all his plans before it all explodes in his face?
I will first start off saying the base of the story was written well. I expected it to be a bit of a mystery and it really wasn't. I felt like the book was a little long, if I had to divided the book in half, half was really good and the other was just ok. I felt like there really was to many details at one point I thought there was maybe a point to all of the details but nope not really, and sometime it seem to repeat its self. I will say this the not so good is spread out evenly so if you can manage to get through that the book its self was ok. Overall I would give this book a 3.5 stars I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either, maybe better for the perfect reader. Disclosure: I received this book free of charge from the publisher, but this review consists of my honest opinions, not influenced in any way by the author or publisher
Tess Johnson goes undercover and enters the mysterious world of the pharmaceutical industry in the hope of discovering if the medicine her mother took for breast cancer contributed to her death. Hell bent on a mission to search for the truth, she is focused and determined. However her plans run awry when she meets Jim Knight, her new boss. The attraction and sexual chemistry between them is instant and more tempting than a new pair of shoes (you will have to read it to know what I mean).
I loved Tess. She is brave, yet insecure, and often speaks her mind to the point of bluntness. This character trait instantly gains the respect of her driven boss, Jim, who sees a kindred spirit in his new employee. Search For The Truth lifts the lid on what lengths a pharmaceutical company will go to if those at the top have no moral code. Your jaw will drop with each discovery Tess makes, whilst at the same time the romance (which inevitably unfolds and sizzles with passion), provides a soothing balm. You will keep turning the pages to find out what happens as the truth is bound to come out and threaten everything they have worked hard to achieve. I received a free ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
I am discovering that every single Choc Lit book goes in the re-readable category. This is another hit from Kathryn Freeman that provides laughter, tears (GOD, the tears! There is a spot in the book where it states that Tess is not crying, but *I* was! This book causes serious leaking of the eyes, which then rain down your face.), spontaneous grinning from ear to ear, and a continuing education for this American in British slang and other words different than over here. Seriously...HOMELY, in this book does not mean ugly. I thought it was a typo, but NO! The British definition of homely is the American word homey.
After coming out of the crying haze, I was so hungover from this book, I couldn't write my review. So, here I am today, several days out, still feeling like I just read this romance novel with an alpha male, but a really strong heroine who holds her own with him. I will read this book again. And maybe again.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
It's not often you find a romance novel set in the pharmaceutical industry. Also, I really liked the cover for this - the woman on the front reminded me of Donna from Suits.
Tess is the new Comms manager for Helix Pharmaceuticals. Jim is the returning R&D dude. Tess is hoping to uncover some dirt on Helix's cancer drug because she feels that her mother's heart attack was caused by the drugs.
As a lapsed biochemist, I found the setting and the background information hugely enjoyable. There's mystery and suspense throughout the story. I'm not a big fan of the alpha male, but Jim was nice (and apologetic when he went too far) and Tess came across as a genuinely smart person who was good at her job and not a pushover, so that was okay.
A fun read with a really interesting insight into the world of big pharma.
I enjoyed this book very much. Tess is a journalist, her mother dies suddenly of a heart attack. Both she and her brother think that her death was to do with a new cancer tablet she had been taking called Zaplex. They become aware of another death which the family think was caused by the same treatment. Tess decides to investigate Helix Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturers of Zaplex and find out the truth about the tablet's side effects. She manages to get employment with the company as a Communications Manager. She and Jim Knight, the Company President, have to work together closely. Right from the start they are very attracted to each other and give into desire. But Tess has to stick to her agenda, even if it destroys her new found relationship with Jim. Read on to a great story full of passion, angst and tears!
If you like to read romances, but have grown weary of the lack of actual story in them, I suggest you try some of the offerings from the publisher CHOC LIT .
I just finished Search for the Truth by Kathryn Freeman and I'm very happy to say that, although the subject matter is quite different from Freeman's Before You, which I reviewed a few weeks back, this is still an extremely good story.
