Theory-Based Treatment Planning for Marriage and Family Therapists: Integrating Theory and Practice

Rate this book
This text is a treatment planner and theory guide for therapists working from systemic and postmodern approaches. Unlike existing resources, this treatment planner provides a means to directly integrate family therapy theory and practice. By providing treatment planning strategies along with complete overviews of specific theories, the book provides a remedy for the common "missing link" between theory and practice. The purpose of this book is to fill the ever-widening gap between formal training in theory and actual practice in managed-care dominated workplaces. The text covers 11 of the most widely used family therapies providing a summary for each theory and then specific strategies for developing a treatment plan.

So far the best therapy book I have read. Explains theories in a helpful way and has example treatment plans. I will be buying this one to use for years to come.

Great book that provided all popular family system theories with vignettes and recommended intervention approaches.

If you want practicals with quick breakdown of each system theory and how to approach it with individual, couple, and family. It's a great way to see how they can be integrated.

If you want deeper theoretical and system deep dive, this is not the purpose of this book.

This is great for therapists trying different theories in real cases as a guidebook. Once you are pretty comfortable (advanced to expert level) with a specific theory, this book may not be as useful.

This is a painfully boring and dry book that quickly outlines several family therapies and subsequent examples of treatment plans— but it is a very quick look at each therapy and doesn’t seem to do any of them real justice in explanation. It is a workbook of sorts as it has practice scenarios to create plans for. I would not have read this book if not required to for school and I will likely never pick it up again.

If you are a counselor or in a counseling related field that requires treatment planning, this is a must read. I use it practically every week. I love the examples. The book has space to fill in your own treatment plans based on the case scenarios.

Clear, no nonsense description of the various theories used in Family Therapy. Also has examples of how each therapy would work in practice
