It has been four years since Eloise last saw her husband. Four long years. Her memories of her marriage to Isaac, though distant in time, are still fresh in her mind and she’s determined that she’ll never go back. Their relationship was toxic. They were bad for each other, or at least that’s what she’s convinced herself. Isaac didn't realise just how badly he missed his wife until she shows up on his doorstep demanding things from him that he isn't willing to give. Though it’s a little too late to ask for her forgiveness and repair their relationship, he wants to try to at least build bridges so that he can move on with his life. Moving on seems an impossible task to accomplish when there’s just so much unfinished business between them.
A. E. Murphy is the Queen of sarcasm and satire, she likes long walks in the park, as much as ice cubes like to chill in a roasting oven. She’s effortlessly independent and so good at adulting it’s unfair on the rest of the world. She only napped twice today and has only avoided the dishes for three days before making the child slaves do them this morning. Winning! Her favourite hobby is writing, her worst hobby is reading through that writing. Also she has two cats that carry toys to the top of the stairs and drop them down so they can chase them. They do this repeatedly in the middle of the night. Who cares if she has work the next morning? Not the cats, that’s for sure. And if it’s not the cats doing the waking, it’s the toddler crawling into bed with her and pulling individual hairs from her scalp with pudgy little fingers for comfort. This is likely why she’s in a constant state of grump unless there’s chocolate and coffee. P.S. Please leave feedback, if not on the book then on this ridiculous bio she wrote herself. It’s the least you can do seeing as she’ll forever talk in the third person now. Alex loves her readers. Alex says thank you. Alex smiles.
I devoured this series and was so excited to get to this book. I was ready for the big redemption story and I feel really let down that it didn't turn out how I had hoped. I keep going back and forth with how to rate this book because as much as I disliked the hero I was invested enough to keep going. That says a lot as I will generally stop reading a book if it hits any triggers but the author did such a fantastic job in keeping the reader engaged in the story. I know some will ask why I kept reading if I disliked him in the previous book and it's because I was expecting this book to be where he redeems himself. I actually loved the angst in the previous book and even when I was screaming at him I was still rooting for him. I just felt let down by book 3 because I was expecting him to redeem himself for all his wrong doing now.
So now to the book: Isaac never really redeemed himself In my eyes. He got off so damn easy after everything be put Elle through. He didn't have to pay for the emotional damage he put her through at all. The fact that he just moved on with his life after everything he put her through was bullshit to me.
The worst part is that they've been separated for years and he never went after her. And I don't buy anything related to what her father did to him. That's an excuse. He was content to live life teaching again and enjoying a stress free life again. The only reason they see each other again is because she comes and asks HIM for a divorce. He then had the audacity to call her cold and be offended that she wasn't cordial towards him after all these years.
Are you kidding me? He treated her like garbage, tossed her aside, verbally abused her, constantly lied, and was just an absolutely horrendous husband and he expects her to be NICE?
He even admits to his father that he doesn't even love her anymore. Just a few pages later he's telling his dad about how he never stopped loving her and was just trying to move on. No.
He was the one that ruined their marriage and I'm supposed to swoon over a guy who doesn't even love his wife anymore? I'm sooooooo fucking glad she had moved on during the separation.
I honestly got whip lash because one second he's having thoughts about how he doesn't love her anymore and was happy with how everything turned out and the next he's trying to do something to win her over. Well which is it? I think the problem was that it wasn't written in a way where you could tell his thoughts were just him trying to convince himself he had moved on. It felt like those were his honest feelings and I just got whiplash with all the back and forth. Kind of like how he felt about her DURING their marriage!
Don't get me started on how when she asks for the divorce instead of trying to win her back NOW he tries to make her jealous?! WHAT THE EVER LOVING SHIT? You just had us read an entire book where he treats her like shit and now when he's supposed to spend the third book groveling to win her back he behaves like this?
The heroine felt more sympathy towards him when he finds out about Silas (her bf) but does the hero show any remorse over what he put her through? No!I just cannot understand how the author thinks it's romantic for the hero to have thoughts about how sexy and attractive he finds a mutual friend of the heroine. WTF?! This OW hits on him and he immediately is like "okay it looks like it's time to try to move on." REALLY?! He didn't even try to win back the supposed love of his life and he so quickly is ready to move on at the first rejection from her? And he makes out with Joselyn when he knows the heroine knows her! Why have the heroine feel guilty about her relationship and then the piece of shit hero who ruined their marriage is totally fine with hooking up with someone else now? The heroine had every right to move on after everything he did to her in book #2.
It didn't even matter that he had been celibate during their separation. Normally that's enough to win me over but not this time.
I honestly wish she had ended up with Silas because Isaac was a terrible hero and I just couldn't forgive him. If he had spent the years apart bettering himself and then going after her I'd have found this to be a great redemption story. But he doesn't. He was a pussy in book #2 that couldn't handle any stress and just wanted to go back to his cushy lifestyle where he didn't have any real responsibilities. How convenient that he got his shit together and didn't care to get his wife back and then now I'm supposed to believe he redeemed himself? Nope.
If it had been him to go after her I would have been more inclined to forgive him. Even with my negative feelings towards Isaac the author still did a fantastic job of reeling me in.
There's always this odd sense of peace that comes as soon as I type, 'The End.' Boy did I want to type 'The End.' I have LOVED writing Eloise's and Isaac's story. It's a story that I've wanted to write for such a long time, so now that I've finished, I feel happy and relieved but also scared. Scared that you will all hate it. In my defence, my characters, once I've given them a face, a name and a background, they write themselves. All of their choices, all of their actions are entirely on them. So try not to judge me too much as an author hahaha I'm nothing more than a puppet to a thousand worlds... <3
Thank you so much for always sticking with me and a huge welcome new readers, thank you so much for giving my books a chance. Please don't be shy in saying hi. Be honest in your criticism if you are generous with your time and leave me feedback, I like to know where I've gone wrong and where I've gone right. Writing is it for me, it's my passion. I want to perfect it. You guys can help me to perfect it. I appreciate it so much and every review, positive or negative, helps my work to be seen. xx
Another book found on a cheating list, mostly skim read. Book 3 in a series about a married couple separated for 4 years. It was a teacher/student relationship that fell apart, basically because of his gambling addiction. She’s in a new relationship. They eventually reconcile.
It kind of works as a standalone, I got the gist of their backstory without feeling the need to read the other 2 books.
The story obviously takes place in England, the dialogue isn’t American, but the story takes place in Boston and Cambridge... initially I was thinking Massachusetts... ah but no, I learned there’s a Boston, Lincolnshire 😁
Book three of Isaac and Elle's story was bittersweet and I'm sad to say bye to them.
And even though it was written very well and I enjoyed it, I have to say it is my least favorite of the entire series.
Distinction is set four years later after Isaac and Elle's break-up at the end of book two. Elle is seeing someone new and graduating college and looking towards an apprenticeship with her idol. Isaac is living in Boston, teaching again, and is in a much better place since the deep dark hole he was in at the end of book two. They are still legally married but haven't seen or spoken to each other and are completely separated. However when Elle decides to buy and Inn with her boyfriend Silas, she realizes she needs to be divorced first so her and Silas's assets are protected.
And she ends up having to go home to find Isaac to do it since he refuses all letters sent to him.
Okay. So this is what annoyed me about this last installment.
First, Elle was a bitch. Plain and simple. I absolutely couldn't stand her. Through this entire book she never once takes any responsibility for their marriage ending, she blames it all on Isaac and makes him out to be a monster. And she allows him to pant after her and feel bad for their marriage ending all the while she constantly turns him away.
Second, Isaac came across so whiny, desperate, and kinda pathetic. I almost didn't recognize him. I was wanting Elle or Hailey or someone to throw him a m'fckn maxi pad. Okay, he fucked up a lot BUT he completely straightened his shit out and TOOK RESPONSIBILITY for all his mistakes. He owned up like a man BUT the problem is he groveled TOO MUCH. Yes, I believe he was too apologetic and desperate for Elle. He moped around too much. And followed Elle like a kicked puppy. I understand he still loved Elle but come on man, have some dignity, let her try to work for it a bit!
Even Elle tells him how pathetic and desperate he is.
(Told ya she was a bitch. But sadly it was true.)
And this legit goes on until the last chapter.
THE. LAST. CHAPTER.
Sigh.
But thankfully we got an epilogue that was sweet and tied everything up nicely. Overall, I'm so happy I picked this series up because I really enjoyed it, even with my annoyances with this last installment. I would definitely recommend!
This trilogy was a good read. I loved the heroine most times during the series but the hero, Isaac, I found to be a useless spineless excuse for a husband.......It was just all so endearing and exciting in the begining....*sigh*
He frustrated me so much and was a real arsehole to Elle throughout the books it was just....gaah! so frustrating! He said he loved her and never stopped loving her yet he never tried hard enough IMO to get her back! The kind of love we readers are lead to believe they shared for each other should never have fallen apart and become so toxic if the hero just picked. Up. His. Fucking. Balls!!! seriously?!
The biggest thing that really got to me in this book that was never really touched upon (might i add) was that at Hayleys wedding whilst Elle is Drowning her sorrows in champaign at the school, that idiot decides to take that OW to his old classroom; which in my opinion should hold a hella lot more sentimental value for him and elle, and tries to get his freak on! Ah....yeah NO!!! You moron!!! What major slap in the face that should have been.
Anyway I'm not guna repeat the blurb in here, and since this is my first review ever I'm guna keep this short and well, just short. I did enjoy reading this series with book 1 being my favorite of the 3, however I probably wouldn't read it again. It was fun while it lasted, during the times I didn't want to beat Isaacs gorgously sexxy ass :)
Excellent series! Book 3 takes you through the ringer. Sad moments, angry moments, funny moments, happy moments, beautiful moments. We get a little bit of everything and I enjoyed every single moment of it. Hands down one of the best student/teacher stories I've read. And I've read quite a few. But this was so much more than that.
I'm not going to say that I didn't love it because that would be I lie, I loved it, I enjoyed every word and I couldn't stop reading until I finished it. But because I love how A.E. Murphy writes I have to be honest with her. I finished the book two hours ago and I feel like she rushed the end. The story had such a good twist, totally unexpected, everything was going in the good direction and all of the sudden, The End. So what happened, how we got here? How was the healing process? WHAT HAPPENED? Isaac had more story than any of us expected, what happened with Darren and Shanon/Sharon? So many things without a proper closure. I usually don't write reviews because I feel no one cares, they are so personal and subjective but this time I had to, it's been hunting me all the way to work and I had to say it. A. you didn't have to rush the end I could have read another two chapters and I would have been happy about it, I read the entire story and I enjoyed every details, every dark part, every tear and every laugh. This is just a suggestion for next time, don't rush it! Looking forward to read your next book A.E. Murphy !
From the bunch of student/teacher romance this is one of my favorite series.
****SPOILERS***
In the first book I loved how they met and their relationship evolved. I think both protagonists have interesting backgrounds and the secondary story about Isaac's mother and how his dad and him learn to live with that and her gradually mental deterioration and the inevitable ending constricted my heart. The relationship Eloise had with the lady of the cafe was heart warming.
I really like that Eloise was balanced, she is young... she sometimes has very typical teenage behavior which is totally normal but not too annoying, her personality is bright, and mature and very empathetic. The way she gets involved with her teacher/Isaac's mother is lovely.
I like how a playful "forbidden" relationship escalates in the following books to very real and mature couple problems. The way Isaac sacrifices many things including his career and what he's good at is a huge proof of his love for her. And Eloise's behavior starts changing accordingly to her age, she becomes selfish at some point but it was expected.
The story pretty much reflects the challenges and struggles of real couples, doesn't matter if they're teacher/student, COMMUNICATION IS VITAL IN A RELATIONSHIP. Something I really didn't like was how raging and violent the father became, it was too much for me. I could understand his bitterness and being a total condescending asshole to Isaac but the stabbing was too much in my opinion.
I think that being separated for a while was totally necessary for the characters, they both needed to grow up but couldn't do it together because they were in different places of their lives because of their ages. I love the sincerity and truthful description of a real relationship.
This trilogy was so good.. why did I leave it so long to read??? I'm kicking myself that after reading and devouring all her other books that I didn't get round to this one until now! So Isaac and Eloise had me gripped from the get go.. they were fiery together ..had amazing chemistry.. and I just wanted them together from the start but with with many bumps twists and heart ache I wasn't sure if it would even happen. Although Isaac was the "Grown Up" in the relationship Elle showed him time and time again how mature she was. This story had me feeling so much and I couldn't put it down from first words to last... quite sad it's over now. Huge well done AE Murphy for such great books.
the heroine is a doormat and an idiot with unreliable decision-making skills. nothing new there but at least i had somewhat seen a change in her character. what’s really disappointing here is the hero. he has no character development at all. i thought this book will showcase his redemption era but sadly, it’s not. he is still that guy that i read from the last two books who is irrational and verbally abusive with lots of mixed signals and inconsistencies. reading his pov really reminds me that men are trash. the heroine is no better either with her foolishness but i still think that she deserves someone more genuine than that piece of crap.
This is the final book in this trilogy, and I'm so so glad that it ended the way that it did! I've been rooting for these from book 1 and this was the perfect book to wrap everything up neatly with a bow on the top! If you haven't read this series yet then go get on it right now!
Wow! Wow! Wow! This series was amazing! Two people fighting hard to make their lives better. They also work HARD to make a relationship work! I loved it, but I have held my breath thru all three books! Finally happy ever after! I also like that they stuck thru thick and thin.
What a great ending. I adored everything about this story. I have read a few books by A.E. Murphy and they were all five stars. You can't go wrong with her books.b
Such a beautiful and wonderful ending to this trilogy. I do wish the story was a bit longer after they start figuring things out. I wanted to experience more of their happiness. We got it in the first book, and then a bit in the beginning of the second. But mostly this series is beautifully painful and a story about ppl trying to find their way back to each other. I would have enjoyed reading about the together time quite a bit more. But I would definitely recommend this series to readers! It's one that will stick with you.
After reading Broken/Connection series I wasn't sure A.E. Murphy would be able to top that series. So glad she proved to be a creative and thought provoking author. I loved all three novels in the Distraction trilogy and am looking forward to reading more from the talented Ms. Murphy.
This trilogy is the most frustrating trilogy I ever read and I'm loving it. I wad soooo scared how the story is going to end, because after what happened in the second book I just couldn't see Eloise and Isaac together. But Alex Murphy wrote a fantastic story with fantastic ending. Ugly and beautiful... So worth giving up sleep and food. Thank you.
I love when my favorite couples break up and they end up back together but there is angst and that is what kept me interested. For me the third book is the best book!
