DON: (Be careful what you wish for.)

Rate this book
When my father died I was compelled to write this novel and give him one last escapade.
"Don," is a tale of a reluctant hero's adventure and touches on the many forms that love takes; brotherly, friendship, the love of your children, and the love between a husband and wife. It's also about everything we all might wish for; a last chance at personal redemption; so we can proudly say that our life wasn't wasted; a chance to do something, "worthwhile," that might hopefully also turn out to be fun. It's about the bravery we never know we have until we are tested. It tells us there is life after death and that fortunately, personality and humour do not die with us. It is a triumph of; good over evil, blind faith over cowardice and charm over manners. Lastly, it adds substance to the phrase, "be careful what you wish for."

Don(70) is in his cul-de-sac of life, suffering from depression after the death of his wife. He feels abandoned by his sons and friends who are unable to help him. His long disappeared brother Ron, (once a rogue always a rogue,) appears in ghostly form and contrives to rescue him from his illness by manipulating him into taking one last adventure, a, "Walkabout." His rescue has a price, which Ron does not reveal yet. Don is to exact revenge upon Brighton's notorious gangland boss who had Ron murdered years before. Don has a miraculous recovery, he secretly plans his leaving and sets off secretly early one morning. He leaves a note explaining his exit at a friend's house but it is not discovered till much later. He strides out marching towards his, "brave new world," a revived man and blissfully unaware of his true mission. Ron reveals the truth one night when Don volunteers to take part in a hypnotism show. In the middle of Don's, "performance," being a chicken laying an enormous square egg, Ron materialises in front of him, (timing is everything,) and tells all. Don is to infiltrate the new Spanish property scam of gangland boss Stern and retrieve damming evidence. In this he teams up with Vicky and Jeannie who run the guest house Don is staying in. A bungled burglary follows and Don and Jeannie are taken to Stern's warehouse where torture and concrete boots are the order of the day. Don's friends and his two sons have finally discovered Don's walkabout plan, they think he's lost his marbles and have met up and joined forces in Brighton to save Don from himself. Thanks to; coincidence, good luck and ghostly intervention, a rescue is attempted (Ron's second, "best laid plan," and we all know what happens to those.) Don takes a bullet to the chest, his heart and breathing stop, he is dead. His, "Walkabout," is over but the spirit world does not see it that way.
