A mystic lyricism and precise imagery often marked verse of German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, whose collections profoundly influenced 20th-century German literature and include The Book of Hours (1905) and The Duino Elegies (1923).

People consider him of the greatest 20th century users of the language.

His haunting images tend to focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety — themes that tend to position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist poets.

His two most famous sequences include the Sonnets to Orpheus , and his most famous prose works include the Letters to a Young Poet and the semi-autobiographical The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge .

He also wrote more than four hundred poems in French, dedicated to the canton of Valais in Switzerland, his homeland of choice.

Rainer Maria Rilke was one of the most influential German language poets of the late 19th, early 20th century. This book is a collection of letter excerpts on the subject of life, and how to live a fulfilling life despite the lack of answers, the uncertainties, the difficulties and challenges that life poses. For Rilke the meaning of life is to live, not to fight or try to distract ourselves from the uncertainties and hardship, but to embrace them, to embrace change. Difficulties are to life like soil weights on a buried seed. If we don't attempt to brace the challenges we will stay buried, we will not have lived. Not an easy read, but as I'm writing this amidst a global pandemic that has caused so much direct and indirect suffering and brought about so much distress, his advise feels very current. It reminded me of Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of "amor fati", love of one's fate - a concept also embraced by Marcus Aurelius, with roots as far back as the Stoic philosophers in Ancient Greece. All sources of strength and inspiration for hard times.

Hierbei handelt es sich nicht um ein klassisches Rilke-Buch, also einen Gedichtband, sondern um eine Sammlung von Briefen, die von Ulrich Baer ausgewählt wurden. Bei keinem dieser sind Empfänger oder Zeit genannt, aber alle haben auch etwas Zeitloses, da der Autor ja meist nur seine philosophischen Gedanken teilt. Am meisten zur Geltung kommen diese erst im Abspann, in dem der Sammler Baer seine Gedanken dazu erläutert und da lädt das kleine Büchlein gleich noch einmal zum Lesen ein.

Für Rilke heißt Leben Veränderung, Beobachtung der kleinen Dinge, offen sein, die gute wie die schlechte Veränderung anzunehmen, alles aufzusaugen. Du musst also Dein Lebe nicht ändern, aber Du solltest es tun, um zu leben.

Und doch wäre es das Schönste, wenn alle Menschen in dieser Beziehung immer wie aufmerksame und gute Kinder bleiben wollten, einfältig und fromm im Gefühl, und wenn sie die Fähigkeit nicht verlieren würden, sich an einem Birkenblatt oder an der Feder eines Pfauen oder an der Schwinge einer Nebelkrähe so innig zu freuen wie an einem großen Gebirge oder einem prächtigen Palast.

Aber das Leben ist Veränderung, das Gute ist eine und das Schlechte auch, und darum hat der Recht, der alles als etwas nimmt, was nicht wiederkommt.
