About the author

Algernon Henry Blackwood (1869–1951) was an English broadcasting narrator, journalist, novelist and short story writer, and among the most prolific ghost story writers in the history of the genre. The literary critic S. T. Joshi stated, "His work is more consistently meritorious than any weird writer's except Dunsany's" and that his short story collection Incredible Adventures (1914) "may be the premier weird collection of this or any other century".

Blackwood was born in Shooter's Hill (today part of south-east London, but then part of northwest Kent) and educated at Wellington College. His father was a Post Office administrator who, according to Peter Penzoldt, "though not devoid of genuine good-heartedness, had appallingly narrow religious ideas." Blackwood had a varied career, farming in Canada, operating a hotel, as a newspaper reporter in New York City, and, throughout his adult life, an occasional essayist for various periodicals. In his late thirties, he moved back to England and started to write stories of the supernatural. He was very successful, writing at least ten original collections of short stories and eventually appearing on both radio and television to tell them. He also wrote fourteen novels, several children's books, and a number of plays, most of which were produced but not published. He was an avid lover of nature and the outdoors, and many of his stories reflect this.

H.P. Lovecraft wrote of Blackwood: "He is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere." His powerful story "The Willows," which effectively describes another dimension impinging upon our own, was reckoned by Lovecraft to be not only "foremost of all" Blackwood's tales but the best "weird tale" of all time.

Among his thirty-odd books, Blackwood wrote a series of stories and short novels published as John Silence, Physician Extraordinary (1908), which featured a "psychic detective" who combined the skills of a Sherlock Holmes and a psychic medium. Blackwood also wrote light fantasy and juvenile books.

كل فقرة في القصة دي سببت لي نعاس شديد، أنا قارئة بحب التفاصيل بس في خيط رفيع بين التفاصيل والاسهاب في الكلام بدون داعي.



المفروض أن الرواية رعب ما ورائي، القصة عن كاتب ساخر تتحول أفكاره فجأة لأفكار سوداوية كئيبة وميعرفش ايه سبب التحول، بدأت زوجته تراقب أفعاله الغريبة وقررت أنها تطلب مساعدة الطبيب الفذ جون سايلنس أشهر معالجي ومفسري الحالات الصعبة الغير مألوفة وخاصة أمور عالم الماورائيات، بيكتشفت سايلنس أن الكاتب أحب يخوض تجربة نوع معين من المخدرات واللي خلاه في حالة نفسية هشة حساسة اجتذبت كيان شرير ساكن المنزل وسيطر على أفكاره وأحاسيسه.
يحاول الطبيب التخلص من الكيان ومعاه مساعدينه قطة وكلب ودي كانت لفتة ذكية استخدام قدرات الحيوانات الإدراكية في التعرف على حضور الكيان.

"نشأ بداخله فهم جديد للغموض المرتبط بكلّ حيوانات هذه الفصيلة وخاصّة ذلك العضو العادي منها؛ أي القطّ الأليف. حياتها الخفية وعزلتها الغريبة ودهاؤها الذي ليس له حدود وأنشطتها المراوغة بعيدة تمامًا عن فَهم البشر. تحرّك في قلب الطبيب شعور مماثل بالخوف بدرجة غريبة عندما شاهد قدرة المخلوق الصغير على التحمّل الذي لا يمكن وصفُه، وهو يتحرّك على امتداد هذا الشريط من السجّادة مداعبًا قوى الظلام. ربّما يكون منهمكًا في الترحيب بزائر ما مخيف. إن عدم مبالاته بالجنس البشري وتفوقه الرصين صدمه بقوة ووشى له بمعنى جديد؛ ألا وهو أنّ الأهداف السرية لحياة هذا الحيوان الحقيقة تبدو بعيدة جدًّا ولا يمكن الوصول إليها، وأنّها غريبة جدًّا عن الاستقامة المباشرة المعتادة عند بقية الحيوانات"

أنا مدركة لأسلوب الكاتب لأني قرأت له
الوينديجو وعارفة أن أسلوبه في تقديم الرعب متفرد ومعتمد على إثارة خيال القارئ واللعب على المجهول وتهيئته للايحاءات المخيفة، بس كل اللي عمله هنا هو إثارة الملل ومساعدتي على النوم بعمق حقيقي.

وكأنني كنت أقرأ لألجرنون بلاكوود آخر 😅 ... من قرأ له غير تلك الرواية سيعلم أن للكاتب أسلوب فريد في الكتابة وأسلوب أكثر فرادة في تصوير أسباب الرعب وأغلب ما قرأت له كانت مسببات الرعب فيه هو الطبيعة التي يصعب كشف أسرارها، لا كائنات غريبة ولا ماورائيات فقط عقول منهكة قابلة للإيحاء ... وللرجل أسلوب في سرده يجعلك وكأنك ترى لوحة وأنت داخلها، يلغي قيود الزمان والمكان فتستطيع رؤية قمم الأشجار تهتز أو الظلام يخيم تدريجيا بشكل يثير الخيالات أو أن يجعلك تسمع أصوات الضواري وهكذا

لذا كان من الغريب أن أقرأ له كتابا يحمل صفتين أساسيتين مختلفتين عما سبق وقرأته له ... الأولى كتاب تحقيقات كروايات شيرلوك هولمز ... والثانية هي أن تحقيقاته في الجانب الغرائبي

بطلنا د. جون سايلنس شخص لطي وجاد ووادع من طبقة اجتماعية مرموقة وقد وهب نفسه لعلاج كل من لا يملك المال من الأمراض التي تقع في درجة بين النفسية والماورائية

الغريب حقا أنني قبل قراءة الرواية تعثرت في منشور نشره أحد الأصدقاء، والمنشور صادر عن منصة شيزلونج للطب النفسي، والمنشور أساسا بتاريخ ٢٠١٨، وفيه أن هناك -حسب الإحصائيات سنتها - مليون مريض فصام بسبب تناول مخدر الحشيش، وكنت قد مررت بالتعليقات سريعا لأجد أطباء يقولون بل هلاوس وضلالات وقتية وآخرون ينشرون الأوراق البحثية المؤيدة للمنشور ويقولون بل الفصام

لذا تفاجأت أن يكون هذا - بشكل ما - جزء من حبكة رواية كلاسيكية - بحسب عامل الزمن، فقد نشرت لأول مرة في ١٩٠٨ - فالطبيب جون سايلنس مكلف بالتحقيق في التغيير الذي طرأ على مؤلف كوميدي بسبب تناول الحشيش لأول مرة منذ مدة قصيرة وبسبب تكرار هذا الفعل صار في حالة من الحساسية استطاع معها وبسببها اجتذاب شر كبير والإحساس بالخوف الدائم والهلوسة ورؤية الأطياف وهذا أثر جانبي أقره الطبيب وحذر من كون الأسوأ كان يمكن أن يحدث

هنا قصة عن المخدرات والحيوانات والسحر الأسود وألعاب العقل والخيال والقوى الماورائية

هنا ألجرنون بلاكوود مختلف فاجأني كثيرا وأمتعتني كتابته المختلفة كليا عما سبق

هي سلسلة روايات اقتنيت منها ٣ عناوين وهذا هو أولها وأنا سعيدة 😁

I have no idea why the other reviews here are not more positive. I loved this wee story and very much felt in the world of the Psychic Doctor John Silence as I read it, fantastic character.

John Silence, Physician Extraordinary is a psychical physician investigator who undertakes a case where a humorist author suffers a psychic invasion from an evil female ghost. The humorist while experimenting with hashish lowered his psychic barriers to this evil dominant personality which leads him to completely lose his sense of humor and his ability to write anything in a humorous line. In this case John Silence undertakes a psychic battle with this evil personality along with his two companions, his dog Flame and his cat Smoke. After a grueling night Silence is eventually able to defeat this evil force. Through investigation Silence found out that a previous occupant of a much larger house that stood on the site of the author's house was a woman that lived an atrocious lifestyle who was reported to be a magician of great malignity and was executed in 1798 by hanging at Newgate Prision in London for her crimes.

Lyrical writing,
Chapter 1.strange "doctor Silence" attempts to solve problems.

Chapter 2: very slow and not in the least bit frightening description of a mans reaction to his pets reaction of a psychic visitation.

chapter 3: Dr Silence solving another problem

Altogether, while the writing quality was fun, the overwrought perspectives felt like dying of boredom.

No puedo creer que esté escrito por la misma mano que dio vida a Los sauces. Lo más emocionante ha sido una foto de un gatete con perrete que alguien incluyó en su edición. Recomendado si padeces insomnio.

حبيت الفكرة بس ماحبيت اسلوب الكاتب كان في كمية تمطيط مو طبيعية والاحداث قليل يعني حرفيا قعد يشرحلنا ويفصلنا في مشهد واحد ذكرني بكابتن ماجد لما الهدف يقعد حلقتين 😭😂

تدور أحداث الرواية حول الدكتور جون سايلنس، طبيب غريب الأطوار متخصص في علاج الحالات النفسية الغامضة. يتلقى سايلنس طلبًا لمساعدة كاتب كوميدي يُدعى مارتن ويلسون، الذي يعاني من أعراض غريبة بعد تعاطيه مخدر الحشيش.

يبدأ سايلنس في التحقيق في حالة ويلسون، ويكتشف أن عقله قد تم "اجتياحه" من قبل قوة خارجية غامضة.


"اجتياح عقلي" هي رواية رائعة ومؤثرة تُقدم نظرة فلسفية للتأثير النفسي للمخدرات وقوة الإرادة.

اجتياح عقلي، أولى قضايا جون سايلنس من الكاتب الرائع ألجِرنون بلاكوود.
جون سايلنس هو نسخة الماورائيات من شيرلوك هولمز، فهو طبيب نفسي وانتهج منهج الخوارق وعلاجه للمسوسين ومحاربة الأرواح الشريرة، عُرف بطيبته وصرامته، وعنده قط ظريف اسمه دخان، وكلب اسكتلندي اسمه لهب... بيساعدوه في تحقيقاته الماورائية.
للأسف جون سايلنس معندهوش شخص يكتب له مغامراته زي واسطون، لذلك السرد بيكون من المنظور الثالث.
القضية الأولى -وهي متن هذا العمل- بتحكي عن كاتب مبقاش عارف يكتب، لأن في كيان ما بيُأرق فكره ويثقله بالهموم. بيلجأ لطبيبنا الشهير وبتبدأ المغامرة، والقصة مفهاش غير شخصيتين أو ثلاثة، وبعد المنتصف مبيكونش فيها غير سايلنس نفسه ولهب ودخان، لذا فهي تعتبر بتدور في غرفة مغلقة.
الترجمة نوعًا ما كويسة، كان في تعبيرات محتاجة تُضبط، وبعض الأخطاء الإملائية، لكنها كانت مقبولة على كلٍّ.

مؤلف شاب، يمتهن كتابة قصص فكاهية، ينجرف قلمه دون سبق تخطيط أو سبب واضح، في اتجاه التراجيديا، حيث جو من الرعب وجرعات من المأساة. ما سر هذا التحول؟ وما مدى صحة ادعائه بوجود شخص غريب يقتسم المنزل معه وزوجته؟!

مراجعة:-
قصة بفكرة مبتكرة. مؤشر تشويق منخفض. محتوى بأبعاد فكرية وفلسفية. استرسال أكثر مما ينبغي في سرد بعض الوقائع أو وصف بعض المشاهد. ظهور مباغت لمفتاح حل اللغز، فلم يتم التمهيد له بقدر مناسب من الوضوح ما قد يعجز القارىء عن تقمص دور المحقق. نهاية لا تعدم عنصر المفاجأة دون أن ترقى لدرجة الصدمة.
الاصدار هو حلقة من سلسلة، تشمل أيضا: انتقام النار، وأسحار قديمة.
القالب العام للنص شبيه ب"سكنى منزل التل"، حيث ينبثق مسارين: وقائع متخيلة (واجهة السطور)، ورسائل هادفة (بين السطور).

Overview: John Silence has made an occupation of handling the psychic problems of his fellow man. When talking to a female acquaintance, he finds out about a popular humorist's plight. Mr. Felix Pender can no longer find humor in his writings. He feels urge to make someone unseen more comfortable. Can Dr. Silence help this individual? Let's find out.

Dislikes: The malevolent spirit is a negative proof on the strength of good. It's how this spirit treated the innocent. If such evil soul can cause so much destruction so long after death, what could a pure good soul accomplish. Poor Flame took it so rough.

Likes: Dr. Silence truly just wanted to help Mr. Pender. He even paid for the man and his wife to leave the house.

He was also willing to listen to those we tend to discount when it comes to fighting the astral entities.

Conclusion: This story was fun. Flame and Smoke were and interesting way to showcase the fight between good and evil. Enjoy this story for the spooky season.

Sebbene all'inizio come racconto lungo paia un poco troppo lento, questo si rifà con un crescendo nella parte centrale ed un ottimo finale nel quale il crescendo dell'inquietudine raggiunge un apice da vera storia di fantasmi.

Questo è il primo racconto lungo in cui vedo davvero un gatto fare la parte dell'eroe: smoke, il gatto nero con gli occhi verdi, è il vero eroe del racconto, nonostante Silence ne sia il protagonista.

Consigliato a tutti gli amanti dei felini e dei fantasmi.

Mooi geschreven, goed en origineel verhaal. Vooral het stuk waarin Blackwood het karakter en gedrag van de voor de 'geest' gevoelige hond en kat beschrijft, is erg knap gedaan. Het is een van de eerste zogenaamde 'occulte detectives' in dezelfde tijd geschreven als de Sherlock Holmes-verhalen van Arthur Conan Doyle. Soms is Blackwood (of beter, zijn personage doctor Silence) wel erg uitleggerig. Ook het einde is wel wat erg glad en zoet - daarom geen vijf maar vier sterren.

A haunted house, a tormented author …influenced by a maligned entity…. Enter Dr John Silence as the knight in shining armour…would had been mundane and predictable, unless the weren’t the two magnificent companions of the good doctor…..

Mr Blackwood shows his love for pets and how much bonding between a human and his/her pet matters …..
At the end, the last lines will bring back that feeling with a smile on the face….

‏رأيي الشخصي القصة كانت جميلة متفرده في الوصف ومختلفة تماما عن أي قصة رعب مشابهة بس فقرة القطوا والكلب جابت لي النوم مو مملة بشكل لدرجة إني حسيت نعاس وأنا أقرأها في فرق بين أفصل عشان أثير خيل للقارئ وبين أكثر في كلام ماله داعي والفقرة القط والكلب بوصفهم ما كانوا أي داعي صفحتين علشان توصف شكل القط ماله داعي الصراحة

Re-read this novella as part of my 'rediscovery' of gothic classics couple of weeks back. If you can successfully remove the trappings of fussy Edwardian writing, it's a chiller. But removing all those obfuscating details would defeat most modern readers, I'm afraid.

A will written fantasy horror haunting psychial shot story by Algernon Blackwook about a man who life is taken over by a spirit occopies the house he is living in. I would recommend this novel to readers of fantasy horror. Enjoy the adventure of books 2022
